Definition of a Cozy from MYSTERY GUIDE

Books we classify as cozies must be... well, cozy. The requisite furnishings include an amateur detective, cats, knitting or quilting, cooking, pots of tea, family, friends, and community. Fans of the subgenre are interested in the emotions and social interactions of the fairly ordinary, suburban or small-town, women of a certain age; they are not interested in explicit violence, or vulgarity. The style of a cozy usually shades toward the comedic; but in any case the tone should not be too dark, as "light, fun, easy reading" is a compliment in cozyland.
