Hi Laura,

Thanks for the tip about Justin Roberts. We like him a lot too.

We may not be able to go to Wizard today. Day has become chaotic.

FYI, Des Moines native Justin Roberts will play a free concert in the lower bridge court of Merle Hay Mall on Sunday, May 23 at 3 pm.

If you are not familiar with his work, he writes great pop music for kids that is listenable for adults too!

Greetings to all who are on this list!!

This week has been and will be a week of pampering our teachers.  They have been overwhelmed with our kindnesses so far.  I am still in need of a little help for Thursday evening meals though.  Please email me if you can help with any aspect of a meal to send home with staff so that they can relax on this evening at home.

I appreciate all who have helped and all who will help!!  And if you can't, words of support are appreciated!!

These videos were forwarded to me and I want to share them with you. Each one is only about 3.5 minutes long. They were such a lovely reminder about the differences we can see in our Montessori kids that me might overlook because we are so used to them! I watched them out of order, starting with #3. They would be nice to share with other family or friends who wonder about Montessori. Enjoy!

Hello Cowles families,

I know someone who is working on certification to be a doula. She needs to
attend two births this fall, so I'm trying to spread the word to any pregnant
women who might want to have a doula's support during labor and delivery at no
cost.

Just let me know if you're interested, and I will put you in touch.

Free childcare will be provided up in the Pax Place room. After the meeting,
we'll have an ice cream social - a great time to get to know other Cowles
parents!

You can find the agenda for the meeting on our new website (part of the Cowles

So I was reading in the paper about the Cowles "healthiest school in Iowa award" and noted a little sentence toward the end of the article - the application was submitted by Colleen Kinney, a Cowles parent.

Then I'm reading the CMPG minutes, and it mentions that Cowles has received a Farm to School grant of $4,000.  The application for the grant was submitted by Colleen Kinney.

And of course, a few of the events that helped Cowles get the healthiest school award, the Healthy Harvest at Halloween, and the healthy teeth event on Valentine's Day, were organized by Colleen.

I just wanted to let you know publicly, Colleen, that your efforts on behalf of Cowles are not going unnoticed!!!  Thank you for all your work.

I don't know who is organizing the trunk or treat, so I thought I'd send this to
the yahoo group. My kids would like us to have our car in the parking lot this
year, but we've never done that before. Do I need to sign up to be one of the
cars handing out treats, and if so, is it too late? Or is it still ok as long as
we get our car there early enough on Friday?

Thanks in advance for any information on the event.

Hi Everyone!
I'm sure you heard from your kids about a recent visit to the school by Pella Wildlife Company.  This is a terrific organization dedicated to wildlife education in Iowa and preserving our natural resources and ecosystems.

I promised Ron (Founder)- the gentleman who brought the wolf and cougar cubs to school to meet the kids- that I would pass this call to action for volunteers along once he had it ready to go.  They will have an office at MERLE HAY MALL this Fall and into next year.  Its a great chance to make a difference and i believe the volunteer opportunities are available for kids as well! :)   The kids were sooo excited by this visit and of course its an amazing cause to lend Cowles voices to.

Thanks!  Contact info for Ron is below!  Hope to see some of  you at the Pella Wildlife Office at Merle Hay Mall! :)

Pella Wildlife Company is pleased to announce that the Red Rock Wildlife Education Center will open for a limited engagement at Merle Hay Mall Friday Nov. 11th through 2011, the facility is on the upper level at center court by the bridge. The Red Rock Wildlife Education Center is our education base that is committed to Education - Inspiration - Motivation. This is a limited engagement to answer the question Are we failing to Communicate? As a member of the IUCN CEC we have created video that addresses that question. Go to http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BvIdwOEzreM and view the video. This will be our mission while at the Mall. You may wonder - Why Merle Hay Mall? - the simple answer is 7 million people go through the doors of the mall in a year. In an age where convenience is most important, taking time out of a busy day to learn about wildlife conservation issues does not fit into the schedule, however shopping is a event most if not all enjoy. We are making it convenient to stop by and experience something out of the ordinary while at the mall. We will open with the exhibit Unbroken - Survival, Instinct, and Spirit of the Wolf. This is a multi media event that will have video, power point, and three wildlife ambassadors on exhibit 2 - Great Plains Timber Wolves and our Arctic Wolf. We will also have a special guest as we have a 7 week old cougar kitten that is starting behavior management and enrichment programs.

This is a call for volunteers - Volunteers will greet visitors, collect donations, crowd control, answer basic questions, light administrative work, internet social networking, fundraising, assist with multi media presentations, and be trained in contingency plans for the facility. Volunteers will also be offered the opportunity to advance to volunteer staff (basic wildlife welfare, basic wildlife education) and then professional staff (paid wildlife welfare and wildlife education) We will start with a volunteer staff of 12. Our hours of operation are 8:00 am - 9:00 pm with maintenance hours on holidays. If you would like to volunteer email the days and hours you would be available. We will have two training sessions to choose from Friday morning at 9:00 am and Saturday morning at 9:00 am. If one of these times will not work let me know when you would be available. If you have any questions email or call.

Thank You for your consideration and support.

Sincerely,

Ron DeArmond

Thanks to a mama on this list who sent out information after Buddy visited Cowles!

I jumped on the chance to volunteer at the Red Rock Wildlife Education Center after that message. I am now helping them with their newsletter and training to be a cougar handler ;) If any of your kids would like to visit Buddy again or some of our other animals please read the newsletter below. This is the first newsletter so I am just sending it here to let you all know what is happening and also to let you know that if you want to be on the e-mail list just let me know. I won't send any more e-mails to this list about it. I just wanted to let everyone here know because I know the kids loved the cougar visit. Some Cowles kids have come into the center already to see Buddy again.

Send me your e-mail address to: kristie.burns@.... This newsletter will help you keep up to date on our schedule and what new animals we bring in. Rumor has it that a bottle-fed baby bear may be coming soon :)

Overview

Challenge Fast Facts:

     * The Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge at the elementary school
level is designed to help students work together to solve an environmental
problem in their classroom or school community.
     * Open to all elementary school classes in grades K-5 with a teacher/mentor.
     * The teacher/mentor must register and create a class team to begin. Then
the teacher can work with his or her class to complete the application.
     * The challenge focus for elementary school is change at the classroom or
school community level.
     * All submitted work must be completed during the entry period.
     * The challenge is open August 31, 2010 through March 15, 2011.
     * K-2 entries and 3-5 entries will be judged separately and a first, second
and third prize winner from both K-2 and 3-5 will be selected.

As citizens and future stewards of our planet, today's students are in a unique
position to become active agents of environmental change. The good news is that
many of them are very interested in learning about and taking responsibility for
their environment and their future.

Everyone can contribute to improving our environment and students are often
eager to help. The Siemens We Can Change the World Challenge offers students
the opportunity to use science, math, and reading/language arts concepts and
skills to create sustainable, reproducible environmental improvements. For
example, students utilize their comprehension skills by reading and summarizing
non-fiction texts. Then they use their writing skills to write an action plan
to solve a local environmental issue based on what they have learned.

With the help of the Eco-heroes, students as a class can become Agents of
Change. The five Eco-heroes on the website, Thera, Typhoon, Cirrus, Solara, and
Aja, will help you provide encouragement and information for your class. But the
most important eco-hero, you, will guide the class through the Challenge and
help them reach beyond themselves and learn how to create change in your school
environment.

The Challenge process on this website and the sample project ideas provided, may
help you guide students to identify something in the classroom or school that
they can change to help improve the environment. It may be a physical change
that is needed, such as better insulation to reduce energy use, or it may be
changing people's behavior or habits, such as packaging lunches in re-useable
containers instead of throw-away packaging. It is important to note that the
Challenge takes a scientific approach to the change process. The class collects
data that helps them demonstrate that a change has taken place.

Top prizes include a grant for your school and green prize packs full of the
latest in fun and sustainable products for each member of the winning classes.

Today's students are ready to change the world. Help them get started!

Subject: COWLES FOOD DRIVE- for people and pets!-- EXTENDED THRU 2/26
suzannepopson
Send Email Send Email

NEWS FLASH- due to soft response, we are extending our FOOD DRIVE at Cowles Montessori thru 2/26.   This is a great way to support those in need in our community, and even a can of veggies or dog/cat food can make a difference!  Thanks in advance for your support of this great cause!

The Cowles community will be collecting both people and pet food for our local food pantry.  We will be collecting the week of February 14-26th

We are working with DMARC and Pet Project Midwest to help people and their pets in the Des Moines area.  This is a great opportunity for us to give back to those in need!

At this time of year the food pantry is very low and with the cold weather many need the food that is supplied.

An individual or family can receive a 5 day supply of food once per month at one of the distribution sites.

Several of the most needed things at this time of year are…. Peanut butter, diapers, canned meat and juice.

Please donate non-perishable food items in unbreakable containers. Please, no glass!

Did you know that shelters are busting at the seams with pets who are taken to shelters because their families can no longer afford to buy food for them?

A loved pet should never lose his or her home just because money is tight. This program provides pet food and supplies to families experiencing

financial difficulties, military deployment, or owner hospitalization,  thereby reducing the number of animals surrendered to shelters.  They accept any dog or catfoods (canned or dry).

Please check the expiration date before donating.

There will be barrels in front of the office for students to place donated items.  Thanks for helping Stop hunger!
