Description
This group is a place to share information about Cotuit, MA on Cape Cod. Cotuit is a sleepy little town half way between Falmouth and Hyannis on the South Shore of Cape Cod. One of the reasons why it is so wonderful is because it is a penninsula so that people never go through Cotuit, they only go to Cotuit.
Cotuit is an Indian name meaning long fields or planting fields. Sachem Paupemtuck of the South Sea Indians sold the land in the mid-seventeenth century to John Alden for the princely price of two brass kettles and a hoe.
The town grew between 1840 and 1900 based on oysters and shipbuilding and farming.
