Hello fellow Costumers!

A non-costume related query -

My university has an annual Women's Chair in Humanistic Studies. They are now
soliciting proposals for candidates for a semester in 2012-13, and I am looking
for an outstanding female theatre historian to propose. Years ago we had Dr.
Felecia Londre come from UM - KC, and she was an amazing teacher/scholar from
whom we learned a lot. This position allows our students to learn from female
scholars whose area of specialty might not be covered at our university.

I am writing to this list to ask you all if there is a female scholar at your
university, or whom you know, that might be a good person for this? They would
need to have a PhD, a good research record, and for my purposes, be able to
teach in any area of Theatre History. Here's what I know about the position:

Associate of Marquette University Women's Chair in Humanistic Studies
Funding is available in 2013-2014 for a one semester appointment-either fall or
spring semester. The purpose of the Chair is to "help the University celebrate
the humanities and the role of women in higher education" by bringing to campus
"outstanding women scholars" who are distinguished teachers and researchers.
The Chair is expected to be a senior academic whose field has a humanistic
dimension.

The expectation is that the AMUW Chair will teach one class in the semester of
her appointment, preferably an undergraduate class. It can be a colloquium,
seminar, or lecture class. That's a matter to be determined by the Chair and
the sponsoring department. The Chair should also be accessible several days
each week for a reasonable portion of each day. The Chair gives at least one
formal lecture (Eleanor H. Boheim Distinguished Lecture) which is sponsored by
AMUW and is open to the public-so the topic should have broad interest. Chairs
have also been available during the semester to meet occasionally with
undergraduate or graduate student groups. The Chair receives the assistance of
an RA (10 hours per week) and a computer is made available to the Chair (and
subsequently given to the sponsoring department). Office space for the Chair is
the responsibility of the sponsoring department. The compensation package
includes a salary in excess of that which the Chair is scheduled to receive at
her institution during the term of her tenure as Chair, comparable fringe
benefits, funds to cover miscellaneous professional expenses (e.g. attend
conferences), and a moving allowance if appropriate. The provost's office
negotiates the final compensation package.

If you have any suggestions for me, would you please email me at:

Good morning all: I have a potential major construction project in the very
early phases. I am finishing up a summer at Unto These Hills, in Cherokee, NC
(the story of the Cherokee Nation, includes Battle of Horseshoe Bend, Trail of
Tears, etc.) The costumes are OLD, falling apart (they won't make it very much
longer). Some (like the soldiers, 2 different sets) are just plain inaccurate.
The production manager wants me to put together some numbers and figures on how
much is needed for a grant (which will probably be a 3-year plan to replace
everything needed) for new costumes. My plan would be to start with the
soldiers, and continue on from there. My questions are:
1: Does anyone know of a good source for buttons, military hats, possibly
weapons, etc? I know COl. Bubbies, haven't checked them to see about 1812 ish
uniforms.
2: Does anyone know of a good source for fabrics? The soldiers are currently
made of polyester, which is fine as long as I can get the quantities. Or Sturdy
cottons in bulk?
3: Just as a ball park figure, what would anyone charge for a designer fee?
Again, this could be a long-term project. To start with 2 different sets of
soldiers, I would estimate 20 soldiers per set. If things were to work, I would
be designing and building all the costumes (at home, nmyself) during the off
season in order for them to be ready for the following summer.
Thanks for your thoughts and help! The board seems to be realizing that they
need to put some money into costumes or they will literally have naked actors,
so if I can get some numbers to them this week, it could be a go.

I'm currently thinning out the mass of commercial patterns we have in our stock
and have found that we have a great number of larger sized patterns
from the 60's - 80's. Lots of sz.20+. I've kept a good many that all seem to
have good basic shapes, and am donating some to our local
community theatre, but I thought I would see if anyone out there has a need for
these larger patterns. We rarely have students in this size range, but am well
covered with what I've kept just in case. If you are interested, please contact
me. Not really looking for a great profit...just need them to go away and
thought it they could
be helpful, even better. Oh, and if anyone needs patterns from the 80's, let me
know...that's most of what's going...and you'd be amazed at the number of
duplicates I've found in
several of them!

Hi Abby- I have a great deal of experience with accuracy, military
uniforms and Native American/First Nations historical costume issues. I
discovered the way to satisfy the many stake holders (including the
Board) is to use an expert consultant to help you. I've hired the
authors of very respected books, used military experts and consulted
academics with credentials in that area. They already own all the
research- and more-- than you need and some can have connections to
accurate supplies. Not only is this easier for you, but also you can
hold your head up very proudly, and the Board can spread the word about
the public education mission of the enterprise and the expertise
involved. Please contact me directly if you'd like more thoughts on
this. Best of luck, what a great project!

There is a company here in Dallas called Fraser Brothers 17th Regiment who do
reinactor's Uniforms. The use buttons which have been mad from the antique
button forms etc. They do several different wars. The contact is Gay Fraser at
fraser@.... The website is fraserbrothers.com. They have canteens,
belts, boots, etc. They are real sticklers for authentic details and would never
make a uniform out of polyester but they might sell you the buttons and
accessories.

Thanks to those who gave me some tips on military sources. I am still looking
for a place to find buttons, hats, etc. I have a new question: I have come
across a drawing several times that shows the rifle regiment wearing green
caped-collared coats, with hats that look similar to band uniform hats with a
green plume. They are wearing probably either tan or brown pants. The rest of
the officers in the picture were wearing what looked like "normal" uniforms. My
question is this: Does anyone know the history of American soldier uniforms?
The green almost makes sense since at some point the army made the switch from
blue to green. The time period I'm looking at is The War of 1812, specifically
the battle of Horseshoe bend (1814). The photo is labeled 1814, and the source
is the National Army Museum, which seems legit. Anyone know more information?
THANKS!!

A fabulous source for military information is the Men-at-Arms series of books
published by Ospery
Here is the link: http://www.ospreypublishing.com/store/book.aspx
The have hundreds of books devoted to even the most obscure war from ancient
times to modern. Click on United States for the location (as it is published in
UK) and you will get the book in US dollars.

I searched War of 1812 found it at $19.95 This should help you with correct
colors, insignia, types of hats, etc.

Hatcrafters has all types of hats including military.

Abby,Each Army Post hosts a museum with a unique dedicated mission. The
following sources may be useful to you and others dealing with military uniform
issues.
First, visit: http://www.history.army.mil/html/museums/uniforms/survey.htmlYou
can download a .pdf file with the history of uniforms from the American
Revolution to the present day (2007). It was written by David Cole as a
classroom reference for the Army Museum System's Basic Curatorial Methods
Training Courses. This site also has links to each of the museums.
The National Infantry Museum & Soldier Center:
 http://www.nationalinfantrymuseum.com/exhibits.cfmAfter exploring this site,
you might be near it for a visit, or you can contact them for more information.
I have always found that the curators of these museums are more than eager to
work with civilians to help them "get it right." And since these museums are
federally funded, they are open to civilians even when they're located on Post.
Unlike the Air Force, it is much easier to get on Post than on Base.

Its all new, unlike Col. Bubbies which is real, vintage and of variable quality.

I have a similar Repetitive Stress Injury, which i first developed
from overuse cutting with rotary cutters. I have worked with
spring-loaded shears and electric rotary cutters since, and varied my
working practices to accommodate flare-ups.

I have not had good luck with these Gingher spring shears--the springs
keep breaking so i'm on my third repair of them:

http://www.overstock.com/Crafts-Sewing/Gingher-Spring-Action-8-inch-Scissors/312\
7813/product.html?cid=123620

So even though Fiskars are lower quality blades, for ergo scissors
they last longer IME.

I have several pairs of these Fiskars:

http://www.labsafety.com/fiskars-softouch-shears_s_43160/?CID=9PP001&ci_src=1411\
0944&ci_sku=43160

And, my next big investment is going to be in these ambidextrous ergo
industrial ones, though i haven't tried them yet:

http://www.ergosource.com/ergonomic-industrial-kitchen-scissors-p-217-l-en.html

So sorry you have developed this kind of strain injury. It's no fun
for sure, and if you can go to a physical therapist and learn some
strength exercises, they really help as well. I recommend checking out
the OSHA document on safe sewing task practice for info and images of
different tool options to help with this:

HI
Judy I would like the master list also. Please. William Henshaw
henshaw@...
Also a few years ago someone did a poster session poster at Nationals about a
project that used all the costume construction techniques to make a clown
doublet with ruff and all sleeves. Does anyone know who that was and how I can
get a copy of that handout possibly.
Thanks
William Henshaw

Hi William,
That's a timely question! The Costume Poster Committee is actively working to
create a searchable archive of all past poster session projects. It was The
Clown Doublet by Kevin McCluskey in 2007. If Kevin can't quickly put his hand
on it; I have a scanned copy in my database that is being prepared for this
archive. Kevin?

I have been using the Fiskars spring scissors for years and love them! The
drawback is that they are not as daily sharpened. They make cutting larg
quantities so much easier, especially spandex which seems especially tiring.
