Building of the week
Have we been here before?
Possibly. The 100ft concrete sculpture has graced Craigmillar in
Edinburgh for 30 years.
Happy Birthday?
Not quite. Apparently developers, want to use the land for
housing. Gulliver may have to go.
Surely, housing's more important?
This isn't just a huge sculpture, it has become a symbol of the
community's ability to shape its own identity. It was designed in
prison by gangster Jimmy Boyle at the request of THe
CRaigmillar Festival SOciety, one of the most significant
community led regeneration schemes of its time, as a place for
children to play. Children helped adapt the design to thier needs
and it was built by locals.
What's happening now?
The community is fighting to save Gulliver, partly because it's
part of the area's social and cultural history and partly because
kids love it.
