Re: [com-pac] Topping lift [1 Attachment]

Hey Joel,

I have been out of touch for awhile and I am just now getting to catch up on these emails. Before I replaced the sails I had a Dutchman sail flaking system on the main and that had a built in topping lift that attached to the block you are talking about. When I installed the new sail I did away with the Dutchman, but I maintained the topping lift and it was adjustable. I have attached some pictures and hopefully you can get an idea of how it was set up.

I'm going to rig the topping lift on my CP-19 today, and had a few questions.

My initial thought is that I don't need a halyard for it.  Just about 22 ft of 3/16 sta-set attached to the top of the mast with a clip on the other end for the end of the boom.  I figured that I'd just leave it clipped to the back stay when I've got the main up.

However, there's a small block aft at the top of the mast.  (Photo attached.)  The only thing I can figure it's there for is for the topping lift.  Otherwise, I'd have to install a small eye to attach the top of the lift to.

So, my questions  - many, many more to come - are:

1) Why might that block be there?
2) Should I install the topping lift on a halyard? - ideas to support that notion?
3) Would it be better advisable to install an eye to which to attach the top end of the topping lift?
4) Using the measurements of 20 feet (from the boom to the top of the mast) and 8.5 feet for the length of the boom, I'm figuring about 22 feet for the topping lift.  Does that sound about right?  (Thanks, Pythagoras.)
5) Would 3/16 sta-set be overkill?
6) Might there be any problem with clipping it to the back stay when not in use?

Thanks for your help.
