Ok. here is what I have looked at last weekend.

Wilderness Pungo 120
Hurricane Santee 116
Perception Carolina 120
  and
some really fancy fiberglass kayaks, but I completely forgot the brand once I've
heard the price.

Trying the first three on dry floor and listening to the person at store, I am
getting more understanding what I am looking for:

- Length
I have change my mind from 10ft to 12 ft

- Depth
I figured that I'd rather have more deep than shallow boat

- Large cockpit
I would like to have enough space in front of me to have a child for a ride.

- Comfortable seat
being a cyclist, I thought anything wider than 5in has enough comfort in itself,
but I realize that seat is important too.

- Budget
After looking at these nice boats, I cannot find anything that fit my original
$200-300 budget :$($(
What realistically I have to prepare to spend for boat and acessories?

Am I missing anything?

The Pungo has it all, Carolina is narrower, but the Santee has such a
breathtaking look.

Of course, I'd like to try them on water.
What other brands and models you would direct me to look at knowing the features
I like?

Also...
I got a map of Ohio river streams and all of them have some dams, just wondering
how do you go over them?

This group is great help, I got really good response, you are the great bunch of
people.

BTW, Eric at Outdoor Source was very good. He spent endless time explaining and
showing me the boats when I was there.

Ah, sounds like you had fun shopping.

Good decision to go to the 12 footer.  If not longer.  I think 12' would be the minimum you would want for any day paddling/touring.

Not sure about the cockpit  to accommodate a child.

Seems to me that Hurricane makes the Santee in two different cockpit configurations.  Maybe S and L.  Sport and Long?   My wife had a Santee 11.6 and absolutely loved it.  She moved up to a 14' Hurricane so she does like their boats.  They are pretty light yet extremely durable.  I believe that there are at least three other people in our group with Santee boats.  Maybe they can chime in on the cockpit options.

I paddled a Pungo in Monterey, CA several years ago.  It was a nice boat also.

I also think that there are several people in our group with 12' Carolina's.   I have a 15' Carolina and like it a lot; it is my second Carolina.  Perhaps some of the 12' Carolina owners can give you some feedback on their boats.  I know that the newer Carolina's have some really nice outfitting (seats and stuff) in the cockpit.

You wouldn't go wrong with any of those boats.  In addition, if/when you feel the urge to upgrade you will be able to sell the boat for much more than you would get for a Swifty.  Other boats that you might check out?   Wilderness Design Tsunami.  Old Town Dirigo.  Maybe someone in the group could suggest some other boats?

Yeah, the seat is pretty important.  So look for adjustments and ease of adjustment.  Ideally you would want a boat that allows you to make comfort adjustments on the fly...rather than having to get out of the boat and then make adjustments.   I think the Carolina's are pretty good on the whole adjustment thing.

Yes, unfortunately you probably were not going to find anything for around $200 to $300.  Even if the boat was used the odds are pretty good that it would cost more than $300.

Things that you will need to buy in addition to the boat:

a license from the state of Ohio.  yes you can get ticketed for not having a license!  Pat and I received warning citations a couple of years ago!
a PFD (personal flotation device) comfort is the most important feature.  if it's not comfortable you probably won't wear it or you will be miserable when you do wear it.  Prices are probably from the $50/$60 range and up.  you want it to be comfortable when you are in the boat and paddling.  you want it to stay on (not rise up) when you go into the water.
a paddle.  lighter is better.  you will be lifting it over and over and over again and again and again.   price goes up as weight goes down.  cheap paddles start at maybe $50/$60 and can easily hit $300.

things that you might wish to buy to make paddling more enjoyable:

paddling gloves (or use an old pair of cycling gloves)
water shoes
water bottle/camel back
dry bag to store towel, extra clothes etc
a deck bag to store snacks, the water bottle and other assorted stuff

In addition you may discover that you will need to purchase a rack to transport the kayak.  that opens up a whole new can of worms.   roof rack + the kayak rack!   can you feel your wallet getting lighter?

kayaking is not unlike lots of other sports.   cycling, golf, etc can cost some $$$$.   Think golf shoes, clubs, bag, balls, link fees, cart.   Or a bike plus cycling shoes, plus pedals, plus cleats, plus helmet, plus glasses, plus bike rack.   you can certainly save money by shopping carefully or buying used or just going into it slowly.

As alot of members have suggested, you really need to try the boat out. Many
outfitters will let you do this or they will have demo days. You are making a
sizeable investment so you want to make sure what you get 1) fits your needs and
2) you are comfortable in the boat. I sold a WS Pamlico 100 last year. While
it was advertised with state of the art Phase 3 seating, 2 people who tried it
out did not like how it felt. Others thought it felt great.

If you are taking a child along, stability is the key as you don't want to roll
with a child onboard. Hull shape is very important as the rounder the hull the
easier it is to roll as that's what its designed for. Kayaks have primary
stability and secondary stability based on the hull shape. Some on line
research with regards to hull chine will go along way. I can't speak for the
other 2 kayaks but I did own a Pungo 120 and its a great all around kayak. It
has a large cockpit and you could probably fit a small child in front of you.

But with children I prefer sit on top kayaks where if you do roll, they are just
falling into the water. And always wear the PFD - same with the child. Alot of
paddlers just throw the pfd in the back of the kayak to meet DNR regulations.
Problem is when you need it, if you aren't wearing it chances are its floating
away. And always always always make sure the child's PFD fits properly.
Otherwise when the child hits the water the PFD can come off.

While a 12' kayak is nice, its alot more boat to load. That extra 2' adds some
weight.

If you are looking for a decent boat, Dicks stocks an Old Town Vapor 10.
Normally I don't recommend Dick's kayaks as alot of the lower price stuff is
made out of some pretty thin plastic. But Old Town in a proven name. The Vapor
is a solid kayak and has a relatively large cockpit - not as big as the Pungo
but close. Dick's in Cincinnati had these on sale for $299 against a list price
of $379. Its an inexpensive option to get into the sport in a decent kayak. As
its a 10' kayak you will have to make more adjustments to keep it paddling in a
straight line but its alot easier to load. Plus you an always use it as a
second kayak as yes, you will end up with more than 1.

Another kayak I would recommend is an Ocean Kayak Scrambler. Its 11'6" long and
a sit on top. Sit on tops are a little more heavier than a sit inside.

Your paddle is critical too as then come in many lengths based upon your height
and the width of the boat. Various web sites can assist in determining the
correct size. Weight is important in the paddle as you will be holding it the
entire time you are paddling. Lighter cost more though. Personnaly I prefer
the low end aluminum handle, plastic blades as when pushing off rocks or off the
bottom, I would much rather break a $50 paddle than a $250 paddle. But that is
my personal preference.

Hope this helps.

My daughter and I went through the same thing last year that you are going through. For my first kayak I was lucky to find a Old Town 11.5 on Craigslist.  Paddled it for 2 summers and then bought the boat of our dreams a Hurricane 13.5.  I have a dog, but gave up the large cockpit of the Old Town for the smaller cockpit of the Hurricane.........more balance.   My daughter did the same thing.   We both love our kayaks,   We both spent $200.- $400 on our first boat to only turn around and within 2 years or maybe it was a year and a half.......bought a different kayak.  I think the way we did it was still the best way.....but if you find you really like kayaking you will eventually buy a longer kayak than a 12 ft.  and you will give up the space in the cockpit.
Good luck in your hunt.....it is fun, but mind boggling.

Not sure when you would have the funds but I am planning to move out of state no
later than June and am selling my two kayaks because I won't have space to store
them initially. I have them listed on craigslist. The first is a Wilderness
Pungo 140 http://columbus.craigslist.org/boa/2235073363.html and the other is a
Wilderness Pamlico 120 http://columbus.craigslist.org/boa/2235064086.html

Both are very well kept, good boats with very spacious cockpits that you could
have your little one with you plus store any necessities for the day.

And seeing the no one addressed your dam question, you don't go over them, you
stop well in advance and carry or drag your boat to a point past the dam and put
back in which is called portaging.

Hope that helps, drop me an email if you are interested andrew.jarvi@...

And secondly I would be happy to meet at one of the local lakes/reservoirs to
let you try them out.

I had a Santee and loved it.  Sold it to get a 14 ft. Hurricane Tampico 14S.  They also make an L which is slightly larger volume (bigger inside) and a longer cockpit.  Both are great boats.  The Tampico a bit more expensive, but faster and a lot more versatile.

Both are very well kept, good boats with very spacious cockpits that you could have your little one with you plus store any necessities for the day.

And seeing the no one addressed your dam question, you don't go over them, you stop well in advance and carry or drag your boat to a point past the dam and put back in which is called portaging.

www.paddling.net has a section with reviews on kayaks from owners/users.  They do need to be taken with the proverbial "grain of salt" but they do provide good information.  If alot of the users mention a stability issue, then there may be a stability issue - at least in the hands of a novice.  If there is a constant mention of quality issues then quality may be of concern.

And if you go to the section on the manufacturers, you can obtain specs on most kayaks availalbe on the market today - great way to compare tangible items like weight and cockpit size.

Wow, it looks like we (CinciPaddlers, CAKA, Elkhorn Paddlers & Hoosier Canoe & Kayak Club) are going to have a pretty big turnout for the May paddling trip to Grayson Lake in Kentucky.

I procrastinated in setting up my reservation for a small cabin.  Now they are all gone!!!   Plenty of camping spaces available but the only cabins remaining are the two bedroom units.

I went ahead and reserved one but am looking for someone (or a couple) to share costs.  Pat is not yet sure if she is coming along.

My reservations are for May 20 (Friday) and May 21 (Saturday).  Check out is on Sunday.  In previous trips we packed up our stuff early Sunday morning, drove to a put in, paddled a half day and then drove home.

My current plans are to drive down early Friday, check in and possibly do some paddling on Friday afternoon.

If you are interested in paddling on Friday, Saturday and Sunday let me know.

On the other hand, last year a lot of the paddlers did not arrive until early Saturday morning.  They only spent one night at the campground.

We all met at the put in and had a long day of paddling.  So if you are only interested in spending one night (ie Saturday) in the cabin let me know.  I would like to share it for the whole weekend but am certainly open to sharing it just on Saturday evening.

I rented Cabin 4.  It has a bathroom with shower, two bedrooms (or at least one bedroom and one additional sleeping area), a small dining area and a porch.  If I remember correctly there may be a toaster and/or a microwave.  I will be bringing a coffee maker, grinder and freshly home-roasted gourmet coffees.

The cabin rents for $80.76 per night plus taxes.  There may be a group discount; when I called the reservation clerk was not sure.  You will need to bring your own linens - ie bedding, pillow, towels etc.   FYI, this KOA has a laundry which is nice for drying wet clothes.  You know just saying.  Also has an in-ground pool.  It was chilly but we went in the first year.

In the past some people cooked on site - there are grills etc.  However most of us caravaned to one of the nearby towns....Grayson or Ashland.....and hit the local restaurants.   We ate quick and easy breakfasts at the campground and packed box lunches to take on the paddle.

In case you have not been on this trip, we are staying at the KOA in Argillite, Kentucky.  NOT the KOA in Grayson.  The KOA in Argillite is also listed as the KOA for the Ashland/Huntington West area.  I will make sure that everyone has a detailed map before the weekend.

Here some photos of the cabins and also some kayak fotos from 2009 taken by the KOA people.

If you are interested in sharing a cabin let me know.

If you haven't been to Grayson and want some more information let me know.

It is an amazing place to paddle, incredibly beautiful, stunning cliffs and waterfalls.  Beware of falling deer and turtles.  Oh yeah!  We have stories to tell!

Drive is pretty easy.  Roughly 120 miles (from Worthington).   Straight shot out of Columbus heading towards the Ohio River.  Cross the river and good roads right to the KOA.

It’s the weekend of May 21-22, but you have the option of adding Friday.  Sat., May 21 we launch for a 12-mile flatwater paddle.  That evening, we group-camp and party nearby.  It’s tent camping with facilities. You won’t have to carry your gear in your boat.  Sun. morning, we do a 7-mile paddle on the most beautiful stretch.  It’s more canyon paddling than open water, so little concern about rough water.  There’s some distance to cover, so I’d strongly recommend a boat of 12’ or more.

The optional Fri. paddle will be on another part of Grayson Lake or one of its feeders.  We’ll have camping available at Grayson that night (add the extra night to deposit below) whether or not you paddle on Fri.

When we reach the RSVP deadline (May 12), Henry will send out a group email with instructions, and we can facilitate carpooling.  RSVPs are accepted on a first-come basis.  Space is limited, so RSVP early to avoid missing out.

To RSVP, and the only way to RSVP, send $8/person/night (your option is just Sat. or Fri. and Sat.)  to Henry Dorfman, 1409 Amesbury Dr., Cinti. 45231 for the camp fee.  (Unrefundable after May 10th).  RSVP must include names of people in your party, number of vehicles (contact me before mailing if you contemplate RV, boat trailer or anything else that takes up extra space, or if you’d prefer a cabin), email address and phone #. Incomplete RSVPs not accepted, so please include the requested information.

What you need: boat (at least 12’ long), paddle, PFD (must be worn when on the water), camping gear, food for on the water and off, and rain gear (you never know).  LIABILITY DISCLAIMER: As with all events posted on the Cincypaddlers board, in behalf of you, your family and all your other stakeholders, you understand the risks of such an event and accept entire responsibility and liability for your safety, welfare and losses, as well as those you register, indemnifying and holding all others harmless. Your RSVP signifies you agree – if you don’t, don’t participate.

The deadline for receipt of RSVPs is May 12 or when the trip fills, whichever comes first. This trip has never failed to fill, so earlier is better. Questions?: CaptainHank /aatt/ Cincypaddlers /ddtt Org. or you can shoot me (dreeder2@...) an email.  I would be glad to fill you in on any details etc.  Simply put its some gorgeous paddling!

Cincypaddlers is partnering with CAKA, Elkhorn Paddlers (KY) and Hoosier Canoe & Kayak Club (IN), some of the friendliest and fun paddlers you’ll find, to enjoy some of the most scenic paddling east of the Mississippi. Enjoy the magnificent cliffs and waterfalls of Grayson Lake (KY).  A sampling of the spectacular views from last year’s trip: http://tinyurl.com/65xe348

But now my head if full of "stable" "speed"

will be looking to try whatever is available and see if I like it.

BTW, I forgot to mention that I am short 5'6" and 145lb. From what I have read
it plays a role too.

So... If you know where and when I can try some boats, please, let me know...

My daughter and I both have Hurricane Tampico 13.5,  we bought them last year.  We are about your size and you are welcome to try our kayaks as soon as it warms up.   These may be more money and more kayak than you want starting out, but we grew through our $200 to $400 first kayaks quickly.  As soon as it warms up we will be going to twin lakes,  north of Dublin.....or Hoover.  We will let you know.

no.  our boats load from the side.  J-racks.  So when the boats are loaded on top of the car they are sitting on their sides.  the roller racks (I think Yakima's called the Holy Roller!) are very cool.  you just sort of set the bow (or stern) of your yak on the rollers, pick up the other end of the boat and start pushing forward onto your car.  neat huh?

the Hullavator (Thule) is even more amazing.  well so is the price!  it uses gas-assisted shocks to help raise the yak onto the roof.  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4chTp_yXkXA

As info, I made a roller out of PVC pipe, roller skate wheels and a glass holder/suction cup from Harbor Freight.  Cost under $10.00 for roller and took about 15 minutes to make.  You just suction cup it to your roof, place the hull on the roller and roll on.

I can send a picture if you want to see it.

Here is the picture.  I can provide a list of materials if anyone is interested in building one.  And I can provide the skate wheels free - only charge would be for postage.

As info, I made a roller out of PVC pipe, roller skate wheels and a glass holder/suction cup from Harbor Freight.  Cost under $10.00 for roller and took about 15 minutes to make.  You just suction cup it to your roof, place the hull on the roller and roll on.

I can send a picture if you want to see it.

no.  our boats load from the side.

Paddlepalooza is coming up next month.

You can find some information on it here:

Ok, I have tried Pungo 140 yesterday.
It was a little windy, other than that it gave me a some kind understanding of
paddling.

I think I have to change my requirements, and cross Pungo off the list. It felt
way too much wide to me. And large cockpit probably not what I will like. I am
thinking that if I take a child, it will only for a short ride, but most of the
time I probably will be alone.

I put on my list to try Perception Carolina 12
and Tsunami

Can't wait for warmer weather!

Hi, We go kayaking with our kids all the time. We bought a tanduem on craig's list for $250. We use it with our 8 year old daughter. It's great in that it can hold a cooler, lunch, extra clothes and, most important, dolls. Down fall, very heavy! Our 11 year old has his own kayak. We go out for two to four hours. Kids really enjoy it.  Jennifer
