I have been in touch with SWEEP. I know that we sent inspectors out. I’m waiting for a report back from them… to find out if they were cited and what the plan of action is from this point forward.
Regards,
Kevin

how about getting to the root of the problem and properly disposing of the trash?
issuing fines for violators, etc.
rat poison is a public health issue as well. less of it the better.

Subject: Ongoing rat infestation in the 1400 Perry Place NW south side alley
Everyone,
I am writing this email and attaching photographs to better document the ongoing rat problem in the alley behind the south side of 1400 block of Perry Place NW. The root cause of the problem is trash being dumped in the alley which is not being contained in trash cans. Rats are getting into this trash and drag it into yards in the area, digging holes and leaving behind a trash strewn mess. The trash is from the residents of 3560 14th Street NW, and to avoid blocking their own alley gate they have unhelpfully placed it in front of the gate of another property. I have filed another service request with dc.gov (ID: 10-00425106) to request rat abatement. The photographs attached to this email document the trash condition in the alley as of Monday evening, December 20, 2010, but they are not exceptional - this is the situation prior to every trash pickup day. The iron gate in the pictures belongs to 3560 14th St NW.
A previous rat abatement request regarding this same issue was filed on September 2, 2010 (ID: 10-00307759) and has yet to receive a response from the city. No inspection or other action is recorded against the service request as of today. Clearly there are two issues here: the city needs to address the rat issue and the trash disposal issue. My neighbor and I have both been treating the rat issues on our own respective property - filling rat holes as they are dug and placing poison bait, but we cannot address the root cause without city assistance. This presents an ongoing public health hazard and a quality-of-life issue in Columbia Heights. I am requesting immediate city action on this matter.
Sincerely,
Tajh Taylor
