Carolyn Sibner has a plan to mark storm drains about and around Pontoosuc Lake. If you would like more information about why please give her a write or a call. Her information is at the bottom of this informative letter and this would be a helpful and fun project around the lake. Thanks for looking! Now for Carolyn.....
Hello everyone,
I've been watching the weather to see if this would be a good weekend to mark those storm drains around PontoosucLake. At this point (Friday the 15th) it looks like Sunday is our best day for quite awhile to come. I'm afraid the colder it gets, the
longer it will take for the adhesive to cure, so I want to try to get out there as soon as we can.
Please let me know if you can join us! We will probably only spend and hour or two at a time. I could meet with some people in the morning on Sunday, like around 10:30 a.m., and then meet again later in the afternoon, around 1:00 p.m. That way people could come at either, or both, times, depending on your
schedules.
I propose meeting at the Dunkin Donuts on the lake and from there we can do our training, and then hit the streets. You can choose which streets you'd like to work on, and we can work together as a larger group, or split up into groups of two or three. Your choice.
Please let me know if you can make either of these times, or if there is a better day and time for you. I appreciate your offers of help, and I hope we can get these streets done before the snow starts falling!! (The sooner the better! )
Thanks again,
Carolyn Sibner

The emerging science of "Road Ecology" is growing in stature and importance. This fall there was the first Northeast Transportation & Wildlife Conference held in Vermont, with Richard Forman, author of the book "Road Ecology" as one of the key speakers. The conference was well attended, and even though it was aimed at just Vermont, New Hampshire, and Maine; there were participants from Massachusetts, Connecticut, Quebec, and Ontario.
I believe we can make a huge difference in the impact roads have on our environment if we start attending the Public Hearings that Mass Highway holds around the state on road projects they are planning. If we all keep an eye on the local legal notices and let each other know when these hearings are occurring, perhaps we can increase the environmentalist impact (while decreasing
the environmental impact). I also hope we can really show Mass Highway how important it is to take environmental concerns into account at the very earliest stages of planning.
To this end, I would like to let everyone know that there will be a Public Hearing to discuss the proposed Miner Road bridge replacement project over Town Brook in Lanesborough, MA. The hearing will be held at the Lanesborough Town Hall Meeting Room, 83 North Main Street, Lanesborough, MA on Tuesday, October 26, 2004 at 7:00 PM. The designs will be on display for 15 minutes ahead of the hearing. Comments can be submitted to John Blundo, PE, Chief Engineer, Mass Highway Dept, Ten Park Plaza, Boston, MA 02116. I have written to John Blundo requesting copies of the design plans ahead of time.
If you would like to be notified of any future Public Hearings please let me know. I think this is an area where we could have a tremendous impact statewide.
Sincerely,
Jane Winn

The Earth Charter is a declaration of fundamental principles for building a just, sustainable, and peaceful global society in the 21st century. The Earth Charter is the product of a decade long, worldwide, cross-cultural conversation about common goals and shared values.
The drafting of the Earth Charter has involved the most open and; participatory consultation process ever conducted in connection with an international document. Thousands of individuals and hundreds of organizations from all regions of the world, different cultures, and diverse sectors of society have participated. The Charter has been shaped by both experts and representatives of grassroots communities. It is a people’s treaty that sets an important expression of the hopes and aspirations of the emerging global civil society[1]. The annual event to acknowledge this tremendous achievement of co-operation is upon us.
There will be a variety of performers plus face painting, active mural making and a planetary procession with puppets, masks and costumes. Lisa Abotto Marco Puppetista will be at the event all day teaching puppet-making. There will also be a mural-making table and a Latino history shields-making table along with clayworking. Citizen Group Forming to Advocate and Act for Pittsfield's Trees
A small group of private citizens including members of the Hebert
Arboretum and representatives of the State Department of Conservation
and Recreation is hoping to form a citizens' advocacy group in
Pittsfield to address the care of our "urban forest" - the trees that
make this town attractive, economically strong and comfortable as a
place to live and work. We need residents interested in working
positively to promote the ongoing maintenance of large existing
trees, and to care for younger trees more recently planted. This
group may apply for available grant monies through the State, partner
with the schools for community involvement and education, and submit
press releases and articles to inform and involve a wide spectrum of
the public.
We need you! Our next meeting will take place on Tuesday, Oct. 5 at

interested individuals are encouraged to attend. Call Ellen Russo at

Ward Morehouse, co-founder and director of POCLAD (Program on Corporations, Law and Democracy) is a resident of Holyoke, and also a co-founder of Western Mass Committee on Corporations and Democracy (Shays 2). Many of his essays are included in the standard introductory book for POCLAD work, Defying Corporations, Defining Democracy: A Book of History and Strategy, a collection of 70 published and unpublished articles, essays, speeches, letters, harangues, and screeds in which POCLADers grapple with the reality that giant corporations -- backed by law -- govern our communities, our nation and the Earth. The book was published for POCLAD by APEX press, of which Morehouse is the publisher, and it can be obtained from the Apex website: http://www.cipa-apex.org
Morehouse is internationally known for his work struggling against the corporate assault on human rights and speaks widely across the globe. He organized a Tribunal on Corporate crimes against humanity at the 1999 Seattle World Trade Organization meetings and was arrested for attempting to serve citizen arrest warrants on the major industrialized country's trade ministers. In 200, he helped organize the Tribunal on Transnational Corporations and Human Rights at the University of Warwick, in the UK.
At the TOES (The Other Economic Summit ) counter-conference to the G-8 meetings in Georgia this past Spring, where Pres. George W. Bush met with leaders of the industrialized nations to discuss trade, Morehouse gave speeches and ran sessions. He has been a regular activist and organizer of TOES counter-conferences. TOES' major ongoing activity is a yearly forum/exposition held in conjunction with the annual meeting of the world's leading industrial countries - -the US, Canada, Britain, France, Germany, Italy and Japan. He has also been a consultant to various United Nations agencies, including UNESCO, UNIDO (United Nations Industrial Development Organization), UNCTAD (United Nations Conference on Trade and Development), and the Center on Transnational Corporations.
The Western Mass Committee on Corporations and Democracy
The Western Massachusetts Committee on Corporations & Democracy (Shays 2) is a grassroots organization working to strip corporations of powers, including ³corporate personhood,² that have been usurped from we the people, in the law. As part of a growing, nationwide movement to build real democracy in America, we are committed to:
€Working in the Pioneer Valley and the Berkshires, the historic region of ³Shays Rebellion,²* on nonviolent actions and related education programs to promote self-governance of the people, by the people, in our region.
€ Building working relationships with other grassroots organizations seeking to end corporate harm to our environment and our communities.
€Working to repeal the legal fiction of ³corporate personhood² and other corporate abuses of the democratic process in our region and beyond.
_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _
*Shays Rebellion, 1786-87 in Western Massachusetts, was the first populist uprising after the American Revolution. It's 218 years later, but the spirit of Shays Rebellion has never been more important to revive than now. Corporations still derail democracy and use their power against ordinary citizens by buying our public officials and blocking sane changes in agriculture, energy, transportation, health care, manufacturing and social spending. € € € € € €

River cleanup, volunteers needed :)
Hello all,
It's been a crazy summer and I haven't had much extra time for the
hike or conservation club, but I'm getting back into the swing of
things in September with the help of Jane Winn (from the B.E.A.T.).
She is organizing a river cleanup and VOLUNTEERS ARE NEEDED! You know
I'll be there and we hope you could make it to support our dedication
to improving our local waterways and to help keep the Berkshires
beautiful. Here are the details folks:
We are looking at Saturday September 18th (almost exactly a month
from now) from 10am to 1pm. The area will be Potter Mountain Road in
Lanesborough where it enters the state forest and crosses Daniels
Brook. The last time Jane was out there it was a huge mess and in
need of some people just like you. Those of you that may have
scheduling problems or just can't make it can still help by donating
food or drinks (or both! we're happy for any help!)for the volunteers
that can make it.
PLEASE RSVP (And let friends know who might be interested!)
To sign up or to get more information on the cleanup or on how to
donate food or drink to the volunteers please contact either Jane or
me (Torben) and we will be more than happy to help.
Thank you all for listening and I hope to hear from you soon! Contact

GRAND OPENING OF THE ARCHES TRAIL!!!
I wanted to share with you all a message from Dave Pierce who I met
at a LAPA (Lake and Pond Association) meeting in Lee a few months
back. He's a great guy who works with the Arches hiking area that
many of you have hiked with me on in Chester and Middlefield MA just
off of RTE 20. He has this wonderful event lined up and I think it
would be a shame to miss it. His original message is below and as
more information comes my way I'll forwarding it to you all. I'll
also be posting his fliers around the college and the town of
Pittsfield. If any of you out there would like to help get the word
out just let me know and I'll forward you a copy of the flier ASAP.
Thanks everyone and thanks Dave!! Here's his message:
Hi Torben:
I'm the guy from the Arches. We met @ Lakes & Ponds. I thought you
might be interested in the grand opening of the Trail on May 22 from
9 AM to 4 PM. We will have Civil War and Stone cutter reenactors,
blacksmith, kayak and fly fishing demos. Exhibits from DEM F&W,
WRWA, Berkshire Scenic Rwy. and others, crafts, live music, hikes,
food, formal ribbon-cutting w/ politicos and more. Check out our
site @: http://home.att.net/~rickarbour/Index2.htm
Hope to see you. I would still like a biological _eval of the area
for our site.
See ya,
Dave
Hello fellow conservationists,
Well, for us students the end is in sight of another year at
Berkshire Community College! I wanted to thank everyone there that
has been so supportive of the Club and let you know what i'll be
doing this summer.
I still plan on sending out information concerning the Club and have
decided, in general, to have two hikes a month. One will be the
backpackers delight where we walk ten or more miles and one will be
the Naturalists delight where we do a nature walk of not more than
three miles and do our best to observe and point out the local,
beautiful, flora and fauna.
More details to come folks, but remember this is your club too! If
you are on the mailing list and haven't blocked these messages yet
then you have a say! I would love to hear more suggestions on hikes
and walks for the future. Get involved and make this your club! I've
had numerous requests for an AT hike and an overnight (possibly on
the AT). I'm working on it guys and gals, just let me get through
finals first! Thanks so much for all the interest and please,
everyone, send me some feedback. Good and bad!
In other news,
Jane Winn, organizer and so much more at B.E.A.T. has forwarded me
some important information concerning the Clean Water Act in
Massachusetts. I thought it was interesting reading and I hope you do
as well. Here you go folks!

Subject: Mass. 2004 impaired waters list
Hi all,
The state has just listed its Massachusetts Year 2004 Integrated List
of Waters proposed listing of the conditions of Massachusetts' waters
pursuant to the Clean Water Act. Comments on the document are due by
June 1, 2004. It can be viewed at:
http://www.mass.gov/dep/brp/wm/files/2004il2.pdf
From DEP's web page:
DEP is responsible under Massachusetts General Law (MGL) chapter 21
for monitoring the waters of the Commonwealth, identifying those
waters that are impaired, and developing a plan to bring them back
into compliance with the Massachusetts Surface Water Quality
Standards. The list of impaired waters, better known as the "303d
list," identifies river, lake, and coastal waters and the reasons for
impairment.
Once a waterbody is identified as impaired, DEP is required by the
Federal Clean Water Act to essentially develop a "pollution budget"
designed to restore the health of the impaired waterbody. The process
of developing this budget, generally referred to as a Total Maximum
Daily Load (TMDL), includes identifying the causes (types of
pollutant) and source(s) (where the pollutants come from) of the
pollutant from direct discharges (point sources) and indirect
discharges (non-point sources), determining the maximum amount of the
pollutant that can be discharged to a specific water body to meet
water quality standards, and developing a plan to meet that goal.
Proposed Massachusetts Year 2004 Integrated List of Waters (CWA
Sections 303d and 305b)
The Proposed Massachusetts Year 2004 Integrated List of Waters is
provided here for public review and comment. This document will be
submitted to the United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)
in fulfillment of reporting requirements of both § 305(b) and § 303
(d) of the Clean Water Act. In addition to the actual proposed
listing of the individual categories of waters, the report presents a
brief history of water quality management in Massachusetts and
presents the methodology that is currently employed for assessing the
status of Massachusetts' waters and reporting on them in individual
watershed reports. Comments should be submitted in writing to the
address below no later than June 1, 2004.

Hello everyone,
I've been having some problems with the posting going out a day after
I've put the post out there so I apologise for any "day late"
notices. Also, I'm going back to the "individual emails" for this
reason, but, instead of sending you a bunch of emails seperate with a
differnt subject i'll put all the upcomming events in one email and
list them for easy access. If you have any problems just give me,
Torben a yell at collegeconservationclub@....
If you have been put on our club list accidentally I apologise. Write
me at bonesandbraids@... with "remove" in the subject line and
i'll take care of it. I'll also be glad to help with any questions on
posting or using the group page.
Thank you everyone for being so patient with me as I try and work out
all the bugs. You've all been great and I really enjoy seeing you at
these events! Be well
-Torben

0. VERNAL POOL SEARCH
This is a little excursion that I'm (Torben) leading up to
Middlefield MA. I've found several pools in the forest that I suspect
may be Vernal Pools but they were completely frozen the last time I
went (last friday). We've had some great weather (more to come!) and
I believe that there may be some great experiences for those that
would like to see salamander and frog egg masses as well as the
animals themselves. The last time I was up looking around I was
startled by Ruff Grouse, Woodcock, A troop of about 15 deer,
Mallards, beavers and much more. There is a huge opportunity for
wildlife viewing for Kids and Adults alike. Give me a call at 413-499-
6654 if you are interested in attending BEFORE 3 PM today. Sorry for
the late notice but if this goes well i'll probably be doing it every
friday to keep updated on the conditions of the pools. There is also
a large beaver pond that we will be walking around that houses a huge
and diverse group of animals and plants that would be great to talk
about while we walk. Everyone is invited! You can also email me at
collegeconservationclub@... This is the new club email address
and is up and running well! Get in touch we love to hear from you!!

The last order of the day. "Left Field Farm" in Middlefield
Massachusetts (Hampshire county near Becket, Chester, Peru and
Worthington) is looking for a worker or two for the summer.
This certified organic farm grows only vegetables and work includes
everything from soil management (composting and stabilizing pH
levels) to general gardening and landscaping to greenhouse work and
weeding.
Interested individuals should have some background in gardening or
farming or have a serious interest in such work.
IF YOU ARE INTERESTED please contact Torben personally at 413-499-
6654 or write to "bonesandbraids@..." with "ORGANIC" in the
subject line. If you sound like a good candidate for the job I can
talk to my friends, the owners, and possible get you a job.
The pay is better than minimum wage, but more importantly the
experience is invaluable to anyone interested in organic farming.
Thanks again and hope to hear from you!

Hey Folks:
Guess what: it's a dark and stormy night and the amphibians are
likely to be doing great things. So, for those who (also) have
nothing to do, come meet me at the Patterson Field House at
BCC tonight at 8:15 pm.
We'll walk to the BCC vernal pool, listen for and search out
migrating frogs and salamanders. Bring waterproof footwear,
hat, raincoat, and a working flashlight. We won't need to catch
anything, so don't burden yourself with nets or buckets.
Could be great!
Hopefully we'll see you there,
Tom
