Hey Florida Pinks!
I just checked our local calendar on the national website and there were only two events listed for July 4th in the whole state! [see bottom]
I know there must be more .... so how's about everyone post their event to the calendar and I then I can just copy paste over to the Florida blog
It just takes a minute.  really.  thanks in advance to all those who read this in time and act on this message.

A note to ponder, at our last three events here in Orlando, we've had at least one new person say they read about our event on the national calendar after getting a national email.  They don't know about things if we forget to tell them.  Have a great 4th of July everyone!  We are celebrating all day long in Orlando!

Dear Impeachment Collegues in and outside the National Impeachment Network,

We've been waiting for this opportunity and it may finally be here.

MoveOn is asking members to tell them what to work on in the survey below.
Impeachment is #2 on their list of potential issues. If you want their 3 million+ members to help get impeachment started, please--- forward this survey to everyone on your email lists and everyone else you know, and ask them to rate impeachment "VERY INTERESTED".

NOTE: In order for impeachment to be ranked among the top three issues, DO NOT MARK ANY OTHER ISSUE "VERY INTERESTED."

Let's go people. This may be our best chance yet to get MoveOn on board!
******************************************************************************************************
Anyone can take this survey, here is the original email for it with the link and you do not have to sign into anything to take it, it takes only MOMENTS to do this, if the link is broken, copy and paste it to your browser and take the spaces out:

Dear MoveOn Member,

MoveOn has grown tremendously over the last several years and none of that growth would have been possible without your energy and support. From the war in Iraq to President Bush's plan to privatize Social Security, we have worked together to make sure that our voices are heard on the issues that matter most.

We've always focused on working on the issues that MoveOn members care about.  That's why our primary goal is to make sure you support the issues that we work on now and those we might work on in the future.

Can you take a moment to help us plan our future campaigns?

http://www.moveon.org/tellus/interest.html?id=13115-5739315-cO3Xd0x&t=1

This brief survey is meant to gauge how interested you are or would be in working on certain campaigns. Your answers will help us plan what we get involved in going forward.  And since we watch these responses carefully, we're counting on you to give us the unvarnished truth.

Please let us know what you think at:

http://www.moveon.org/tellus/interest.html?id=13115-5739315-cO3Xd0x&t=2

We're ready to take on more campaigns and have a bigger impact—but we want to know where you stand first.

Thanks for all you do,

Dear Folks,

I spoke with Kent Vann the director at the St. Francis House this morning, July 7, 2008. They have a desperate need for food.

Their pantry shelves are bare. The reserve food they keep in their two large freezers has been completely used up and the freezers have been unplugged to conserve electricity. Hundreds of hungry people come to St. Francis for food each week. Kent tells me that if they don¢t get some donations right away, many of the people who come to them for food will leave hungry.

Items St. Francis House needs most include:

Pasta

Rice

Eggs

Canned or fresh vegetables

Canned goods of any kind

Frozen meats such as chicken, ground beef, turkey

All contributions and donations to St. Francis House are tax deductible. If you have any questions, or would like to help, please call 378-9079 and speak with Kent or one of his staff.

Please pass this along to anyone who might be willing to help.

Dear Global Exchange Supporter,

Six years ago, as the Bush administration, Congress and the Media were preparing for war with Iraq, would you have done more to prevent the war?

As early as this week the House of Representatives is likely to vote on Resolution 362, also known as the Iran War Resolution. In the Senate, Resolution 580, a sister resolution has been introduced by Indiana Democrat Evan Bayh.

Take action TODAY to stop passage of Resolution 362 and 580 to prevent war with Iran NOW.

Take Action...
Demand a NO vote to the "Iran War Resolutions" 362 and 580!

Write a letter to CongressWith our click and send letter tool you can write to members of both the House and Senate.  They need to hear from as many people as possible.

Send an email to all of your contacts.  Congress needs to hear a resolute NO to Resolution 362 in the House and Resolution 580 in the Senate.

This resolution essentially calls for an act of war - a naval blockade of Iran

The resolution's key section demands that the president:

  • Initiate an international effort to immediately increase economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran
  • Impose stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran
  • Verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products

CODEPINK blockades Rep. Ackerman's houseboat

In an early morning flotilla blockade, CODEPINK protested by land and sea
at Rep. Gary Ackerman's (D-NY) house-boat in DC on Wednesday.

Ackerman said "This is the most creative protest/demonstration I have ever seen in my life"
and then engaged in a lengthy discussion about the Iran sanctions proposed in Congress.
He also thanked CODEPINK for exercising our democratic rights.
i hope you have time to watch the video, it's awesome.  Diplomacy in action!

After bird dogging, occupying offices and discussing the Iran Sanctions being considered by the House at length with Rep. William Lacy Clay, amazingly the PINKs in Missouri have succeeded in getting Lacy to remove his co-sponsorship from the congressional record! wow.  read all about it below.

Any one think we can move Senator Nelson?

Hello all,
I just wanted to relay some success that we had here in Missouri.  Our Rep. Lacy Clay, has agreed to remove himself from co-sponsoring the recent resolution put forth by Rep. Ackerman, that could instigate violence in Iran.  I'm including a text written by a member of our group, Bill Ramsey:

Here is my account of our effort to convince Clay to withdraw his co-sponsorship of HCR 362:

Yesterday we received word from Rep. William Lacy Clay's chief to staff that he will be withdrawing his co-sponsorship of HR 362. Below is the Congressional Record of his request that his name be withdrawn from the co-sponsorship list.

Last week, we wrote letters asking that Clay withdraw.  We received letters back indicating that he would not.  On July  after a phone conversation with his foreign policy aid, fifteen local activists went to his local office seeking a conference call with Clay.  Within 30 minutes we were in a conference room discussing the resolution with Clay by teleconference.  He still held to his position of co-sponsoring the resolution.

After the conference call we remained in the office discussing the resolution with four of his local aides and among ourselves.  When the local staff announced that the office was closing, several of the activists announced that they were staying in the office until Clay changed his mind. The aides called Washington.

A few minutes Clay was on the phone asking us to leave and agreeing to meet with us again on July 9.  We remained in the office and a few minutes later his chief of staff called indicating that he personally would
meet with Clay all evening if necessary to discuss the resolution and that for us to call on July 9 at 10 AM to find out the results of that meeting and whether Clay would be available for another teleconference at 4:30 on July 9/ When I called back at 10 AM on July 9 , the Chief of staff gave me the word that Clay would withdraw his co-sponsorship and release a statement this afternoon.

Hopefully other groups around the country are having similar successes.  We will turn our efforts now to
Rep. Carnanhan (MO 3rd Congressional District).

Greetings All:

Our SCHEDULE is from 4:00pm to 6:30pm, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at Archer
Rd. and 34th St., every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Univ. Av. and 13th St.

The tide has turned in our favor. Cindy Sheehan's moral authority in
galvanizing antiwar sentiments from all walks of life is testimonial to this
fact. The Bushites' criminal callousness in the handling of hurricane
Katrina before and after its landing has further opened the eyes of millions
of folks. Opinion poll after opinion poll have shown overwhelming majority
of the American people wanted troops out of Iraq NOW, yet Bushites and their
cohorts persist in carrying on with their immoral and illegal war.

Recent revelations on the Bushites' egregious disregard for the rule of law
manifested in, to name just a few, illegal spying, kidnapping, authorization
for torture, Abramoff scandal, etc. has only added insult to injury. Further
more, according to a report by Seymour Hersh, these depraved minds are
moving forward with a mad plan for a nuclear attack on Iran.

Also the Bush regime not only pays the bills for the Israeli war machine,
but also gives it the green light to intensify its war on the Palestinians
and Lebanese, rushes an emergency supply of fuel and precision-guided bombs
to enhance the Israeli killing and wrecking spree, while at the same time
blocks all international peace initiatives. And it is using the
Israeli-created humanitarian crisis as a dress rehearsal and a pretext for
attacks on Syria and Iran.

As the approval rating of the Bush regime plummets, its key figures are
stepping up their efforts in fear- and hate-mongering, pressuring Congress
to retroactively legalize torture, warrantless wiretapping and making
changes to War Crimes Act to retroactively protect regime elements from war
crimes prosecution.

With the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which permits
warrantless incarceration and torture of suspected terrorists, an American
police state is fast taking shape. As if the Bush regime has not usurped
sufficient dictatorial power, Frank Morales pointed out that "Public Law
109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122),
which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a
private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public
emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of
state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or
local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder.""

The Bush regime's condemnation of North Korea stinks of cant and hypocrisy.
All that the North Korea wanted from the US is a peace/nonaggresion treaty,
instead the Bush regime unilaterally abrogated the Agreed Framework
agreement between the Clinton administration and North Korea, recklessly
threatens North Korea by calling it part of the Axis-of-evil, etc. Thus
forcing North Korea to accelerate its development of a nuclear deterrence
capability while maintaining its willingness to negotiate with the US and
making Korea peninsula a nuclear weapons free zone.

According to the October 11th Lancet Journal Report: Bush's illegal and
immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq has caused 655,000 excess Iraqi
deaths over and above the base line annual mortality due to 12 years of
sanctions. We are not even talking about the number of Iraqis injured,
maimed, become sick due to lack of medicine or health care provider, with
broken up families, forced to flee their homes and country, etc.

In this mid-term election the electorates have delivered a resounding
rejection of the Bush agenda. Although the Dems who took over the leadership
of both chambers of Congress have wasted no time to dampen expectations.
However, more favorable political space have been opened up to restore the
Bill of Rights, roll back the police state and militarism, dump the Military
Commissions Act, repeal the Patriot Act, end the illegal and immoral
occupations, bring the troops home to save Iraqi, Afghani and American lives
as well as the environment, etc.

Just as Bush used the phony excuse of "fighting terrorism" to invade and
occupy Iraq, he is using the same excuse to justify support for the invasion
of Somalia by Ethiopia, as well as the killing of a large number of Somali
civilians by the US military. Contrary to heeding the voice of the people to
end the occupation and bring the troops home now, the Bush regime decided on
a troop surge to escalate the killing, aiming at turning sections of Baghdad
into another Fallujah to clear the way for the passage of the hydrocarbon
privatization laws by their Iraqi puppets. Simultaneously, this reckless
regime is intensifying its disinformation campaign on Iran to brainwash the
American people while heightening the military threat of imminent attack
against Iran.

Here's another ongoing outrage; the Bush regime is responding to the scandal
over the neglect of wounded troops with scapegoat, retaliation and cover-up
while continuing in sending more troops as executioner as well as cannon
fodder to wars of aggression and occupation based on lies and motivated by
war-profiteering, control of hydrocarbon resources and geo-strategic
advantage. And not just the Bush regime and the Repubs but also many Dems
are justifying support for these wars in the name of "Support Our Troops".
I.e. "Support the Troops" is the reason why the troops have to be sent into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation. In other
words, the warmongers' twisted logic says if we don't send the troops into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation, then we are
not supporting our troops.

Join us tomorrow at 34th St. and Archer Rd. We are always in need of folks
to join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:30pm. Bring your own
signs or use ours - we have lots of them.

Peace. Ku

Hi Local Gainesville Pinks,
Let's get together on Saturday, August 2, noon to 2 pm for lunch and to share our ideas for upcoming peaceevents.  Let's meet at Mother's Pub next door to the Civic Media Center, on West University Av. at NOON. The Peace Forum will be held beginning at 2 pm at the CMC.
Here's some things we can discuss.  Travel in support of the CodePINK actions at the Democratic  (Denver) and Republican (Minneapolis) Conventions near the end of August.
What is the status of CodePINK University of Florida Chapter and their upcoming plans for Fall semester??  Educational campaign on "Afghanistan"  --- be sure to read Medea Benjamin's recent Common Dreams article on Afghanistan.
Upcoming, too, is the January 2009 Inauguration in DC; educational trips to Afghanistan and other places - check out www.globalexchange.org
Do we, as a group want to work toward taking a trip together - some have suggested Venezuela, Afghanistan, Washington DC as well as the upcoming conventions.  Do we want to do fundraisers to help defray costs of travel?  Come to the meeting with your ideas.
Your pal for peace,

Upcoming, too, is the January 2009 Inauguration in DC; educational trips to Afghanistan and other places - check out www.globalexchange. org
Do we, as a group want to work toward taking a trip together - some have suggested Venezuela, Afghanistan, Washington DC as well as the upcoming conventions.  Do we want to do fundraisers to help defray costs of travel?  Come to the meeting with your ideas.
Your pal for peace,
Jacque Betz

Below is an announcement forwarded to me by Anna Guest-Jelley, vice president of Gainesvillle Area NOW and Director of the Violence Prevention Program at Peaceful Paths.  It seems like a good opportunity to work with a wonderful feminist and see if this type of social work is up your ally.  Anyone who is interested should contact Anna (contact info at end of email).  She is looking for 3 - 5 interns for fall.

Hope this interests you,
Katie W.

Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network is now offering an exciting new internship opportunity in
hands-on grassroots social change work. Our Violence Prevention program works with local youth,
schools, and community agencies to prevent intimate partner violence before it occurs and build healthy
relationships. The Violence Prevention Internship Program has been developed to provide interns a
chance to both receive training about intimate partner violence prevention and to experience this work
first hand. Violence Prevention is a rapidly expanding field, and this is a great growth opportunity for
people interested in working in a variety of careers, including violence prevention, substance abuse
prevention, juvenile justice, social change, program planning and evaluation, and community organizing,
to name a few. Some of the things interns will be able to engage in are:
Experiential social change—learn what it's like to do this work on a day to day basis
Community networking with allied organizations
Tools to facilitate group discussions amongst youth
Discussion and personal reflection about intimate partner violence and oppression
Program planning and evaluation
Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. For more information or to apply,

House panel votes to cite Rove for contempt

By LAURIE KELLMAN –
WASHINGTON (AP) — A House panel Wednesday voted to cite former top White House aide Karl Rove for contempt of Congress as its Senate counterpart publicly pursued possible punishments for an array of alleged past and present Bush administration misdeeds.

Voting along party lines, the House Judiciary Committee said that Rove had broke the law by failing to appear at a July 10 hearing on allegations of White House influence over the Justice Department, including whether Rove encouraged prosecutions against Democrats.

The committee decision is only a recommendation, and it was unclear whether Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., would allow a final vote. Rove has denied any involvement with Justice decisions, and the White House has said Congress has no authority to compel testimony from current and former advisers.

The vote occurred as members of the Senate Judiciary Committee held a hearing on allegations of administration wrongdoing ranging from discriminating against liberals at Justice to ignoring subpoenas and lying to Congress.

Peace. Ku

Below is a response to the recent comments I received from you:

Dear Mr. Mayfield:

Thank you for contacting me regarding the role of the courts and the Department of Justice in the prosecution of the Global War on Terror. I appreciate hearing from you and would like to take this opportunity to respond to your concerns.

As you know, the Global War on Terror is unlike any other conflict our nation has fought before. It has presented our country with many unprecedented and difficult choices. Among them is the ability to balance our desire to treat all people with dignity and our need to prevent future terrorist attacks.

A recent decision by the Supreme Court, Boumediene v. Bush, has complicated matters further. In Boumediene, the Court held, 5-4, that aliens designated as enemy combatants have the same rights as American citizens. Never before have enemy combatants been given such expansive rights. The lower courts and the Department of Justice are now struggling to adapt to this surprising decision.

You can be assured that as the debate about terror detainee treatment continues, I will be guided by this principle: the strength of America depends on the careful preservation of its values, and terrorist detainees should be afforded an appropriate legal process. This, however, does not mean that foreign terror suspects should be afforded the same rights and process as American citizens enjoy in our own courts.

Again, thank you very much for sharing your opinions with me. If you have any additional questions or comments, please do not hesitate to contact me. In addition, for more information about issues and activities important to Florida, please sign up for my weekly newsletter at http://martinez.senate.gov.

for torture, Abramoff scandal, etc. has only added insult to injury. Further
more, according to a report by Seymour Hersh, these depraved minds are
moving forward with a mad plan for a nuclear attack on Iran.

Join us tomorrow at 13th St. and Univ. Av. We are always in need of folks to
join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:30pm. Bring your own
signs or use ours - we have lots of them.

Peace. Ku
