Suiting the Floridian temperament as well as the general pace of life in G'ville during summer, we've put off the customary gathering of representatives from area pro-peace organizations and worried individuals to share plans, schedules, cookies, and juice at the Civic Media Center (1021 W. University Ave) as long as possible (within the historic agreement to meet 2 pm on the first Saturday of each month), but the time will be coming around at last on Saturday, June 7.

What's happening before then? Tonight, 7:30 pm at the CMC, Iguana editors Jenny Brown & Joe Courter present a report on their recent Venezuela trip with slides & commentary on "a president who tells the truth". (Is there such a thing?)

Saturday is the Peace Forum, expected to provide drama and scandal in the denouement to a wave of shocking revelations already delivered to subscribers of the CCAWTtalk listserv and (to a lesser degree) the listserv of the G'ville chapter of Vets for Peace, concerning the deplorable character and habits of ... yours truly. Adults only! Cookies & juice will be served, for those with strong enough stomachs to muster an appetite in such a turpitudinous environment. Also, hypothetically, we'll have some collaboration and coordination of pro-peace activities in our area, for the sake of tradition.

Another first-Saturday tradition continues 6:30 pm at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship, 4225 NW 34th St, as dishes are uncovered at the Veg 4 Life potluck (no, apparently not an anti-abortion project - thanks for reclaiming the word, guys!).

Monday, 6/9, 8pm, the CMC's Monday night film will be Murder on a Sunday Morning, a documentary on a controversial murder in Jacksonville (for which I have an airtight alibi, whenever it was). The following Mondays, CMC will show Century of Self (parts 1 & 2) on 6/16; Century of Self (parts 3 & 4) on 6/23; and From Swastika to Jim Crow on 6/30, all at 8 pm.

Tuesday, 6/10, 7 pm, the CMC hosts a screening of Zeitgeist, a documentary of very wide scope and controversial even by Civic Media Center standards, which concludes with a perspective on the crimes of 9/11/01: more at http://www.zeitgeistmovie.com/.

Wednesday, 6/11, the peace work is more hands-on with Food Not Bombs, which feeds the homeless on Wednesdays at 7 pm and Saturdays at 3:30 pm, with the food prep starting at noon - find out the how and where from hailierudig@....

From Saturday, 6/14 to Monday, 6/16, an unknown number of "Obama Fellows" are expected in town and the Progressive Democrats of America are looking for couches, spare beds, even floor space to accommodate them while they help fortify Alachua County against an expected onslaught of McCainoids. To provide shelter and other assistance for this non-violent defense, contact UF SFBO Chapter Coordinator Danny Beaulieu at dbeaulieu@studentsforbarackobama with how many people you can take in, what type of accommodations you have, and your phone number.

The local pro-peace month wraps up with a memorial for Peg McIntire, who recently concluded 97 years of north Florida pro-peace activism (okay, some rumors have it that she took time off for personal concerns during kindergarten naps) at the St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavilion from 6:00 to 9:00 pm. This tribute has too many moving parts to summarize, so here's the whole story:

Let's celebrate Peg's life

Dear friends of Peg,
We would like you to join us in a celebration of Peg McIntire's life and work on Monday, June 30, at the St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavilion from 6:00 to 9:00 pm.
It was Peg’s wish that after she died we have a “party” with good friends, good food and good music.
We invite you to submit your favorite "Peg stories" or "Pegisms" for a future publication. You may email these to me, but hard-copy stories will also be collected at the Celebration. In addition, we will have tape recorders at the Celebration where you will be able to recount your “Peg story”. We will have an exhibit of some Peg memorabilia, as well as some of her favorite Peace and Justice causes.
Peg loved pot lucks, so please bring some good food and wine. The evening will be interlaced with testimonies and her favorite music.
If you wish to help with the music, please contact Tom Santoni (tom@... tel. 692 4372) or Katherine Archer (tadpolepool@...). If you wish to help out with the peace activism table, please contact Renee Mintz (pepper82@...  tel. 825 1143). If you wish to help with the memorabilia, please contact Jill  Lee ( jh-lee@...  tel.  824 2363). If you wish to help with coordination of the potluck, please contact Anne Bobrowski (avbster@... tel. 461 3188). If you have any other ideas please contact John X (metanoia1@... tel. 504-1004) or Dee Lovell (doralovell@... tel. 814-6417).
We hope you and your family will be able to attend to help us make this a memorable, joyous time.
If you can, please bring your own chairs and please pass this invitation to friends who do not have email.

Thanks.
Jo and Sally.

Then comes July, with old-fashioned non-metaphorical fireworks on Friday, 7/4 (except in G'ville, where the Bang!-Aaah! ritual traditionally takes place on the evening of the 3rd, unless cancelled this year to facilitate tax cuts for patriotic Republicans), with the Alachua County Greens and Vets for Peace planning outreach to the (usually) pro-war population that evening - yep, the actual Fourth - at observances to be held outside Alachua City Hall - moral support always welcome, according to Michael Canney at alachuagreen@...,

Smoke-stained survivors of the two nights of national celebration are invited to muster at the Civic Media Center on Saturday, 7/5 at 2 pm for another convocation of the Peace Forum, perhaps this time without shocking & sordid exposés - and the cycle continues...

Peace,

Pierce

Our Florida delegates will be traveling to Denver and St. Paul for the National conventions this summer.  Please join me in asking them to keep the cost of war in the forefront. Until we demand peace from every sector, we will have war.  Stand up! Click here to sign the petition:

http://progressflorida.org/iraqtax

There's no question that the decision to go into - and stay in - Iraq has cost us. But how much?
Great new video on cost of war: How much is too much to spend on the war in Iraq?

According to budget experts, Floridians paid $7.5 billion for the war in 2007 alone.  That's $7.5 billion that could have paid for better schools, health care, affordable housing and initiatives to kick our addiction to oil.

Please take a moment to send a message to the Florida Congressional Delegation, urging them to stand up for working families here in Florida, instead of siding with George Bush and Dick Cheney in throwing more money at an endless war.  Click here to sign the petition:  http://progressflorida.org/iraqtax
It just takes a minute to ask our delegates to speak for peace.  Or join me this summer and tell them yourself!

It was 91 degrees in the shade as a sweaty four-pack of representatives from local pro-peace organizations assembled at the Civic Media Center at 1021 W. University Ave to meta-conspire over juice, fruit, Gator Dawgs and no cookies (which were there, but nobody felt like opening the bag - what could top the aftertaste of a pineapple-covered hot dog?).

It was also the same time as the memorial service for the irreplaceable Bo Diddley, which provides a clue as to where other potential attendees were taking care of business. "Who Do You Love?"

The anticipated personal fireworks have been postponed, though CMC Co-coordinator Samantha Acosta ably filled the gap with her acute observation that, "You guys are awful!" Further details will no doubt be provided as circumstances warrant.

So just what the heck is going on amongst the pro-peace cadres this month?

Estivation (n): Zoology - Prolonged torpor or dormancy of an animal during a hot or dry period. The summer equivalent of hibernation.

As goeth Gainesville, so goeth Gainesville pro-peace projects. Vets for Peace and Code Pink made a major statement with the "Memorial Mile" along NW 8th Ave over the Memorial Day weekend. Then everybody took off for summer break.

Well, not quite: the sidewalk sign-wavings still (mostly) continue:

- every Monday, 5-6 pm, by Melrose Surge for Peace at the corner of State Roads 21 & 26;
- Tuesday, 6/17, 4-6 pm, by CCAWT, Vets for Peace, et al, at the corner of  SW 34th St & Archer Rd;
- Tuesday, 6/10 & 6/24, 4-6 pm, by CCAWT, Vets for Peace, et al, at the corner of  W 13th St & University Ave;
- every Sunday, 4-5 pm, by the Women in Black at the corner of NW 16th Blvd & 43rd St in G'ville.

(Yep, Marions for Peace has also taken time off for big umbrellas and iced lemonade until further notice.)

And of course the Civic Media Center hasn't stopped mediating civilly, including political documentaries on Monday evenings:

6/9, 8 pm, Murder on a Sunday Morning, a documentary on a controversial murder in Jacksonville;
6/16, 8 pm, Century of Self (parts 1 & 2);
6/23, 8 pm, Century of Self (parts 3 & 4); and
6/30, 8 pm, From Swastika to Jim Crow.

As it happens, the CMC is open on other days as well: keep up to date on June doings there at http://www.civicmediacenter.org/?m=200806&cat=4, or see the big picture at http://www.civicmediacenter.org.

For example, on Tuesday, 6/10, 7 pm, you can see Zeitgeist at the CMC to find the links among astrology, economics, 9/11 and mass media; a discussion afterwards may help clarify things, if the stars are so aligned.

Progressive Democrats of America will host a flying squad of Obama Fellows from Saturday, 6/14 through Monday, 6/16: contact Danny Beaulieu at dbeaulieu@studentsforbarackoba if you have a spare room, couch or futon to share for these traveling troubadors.

The Alliance for Peace will meet on the 3rd Monday, 6/16 (somebody please tell me when!), now at the Sun Center Atrium (behind Maude's). (Conspiracy alert: the contact number in the Iguana Directory has been disconnected...)

Progressive Democrats of America invites one & all to the "Progressive Nature Getaway" celebrating the summer solstice on 6/20 at Nature's Resort in Homosassa Springs for "No trainings, no work, just progressive networking in a relaxed atmosphere to recharge ourselves before we set out to make history. ... You can have it all for $60 per person with pre-registration or $75 at the door. ... We need an indication of how many folks will be dining 3 WEEKS IN ADVANCE... Any questions please contact your State Coordinators Luis luis@... ... shelly@... ... mike@... Or call 1-877-652-8047".

CCAWT (Community Coalition Against War & Terrorism) will still be plugging along at the Wilhelmina Johnson Center, 321 NW 10th St, on Thursday, 6/26, 6 pm.

Monday, June 30, friends, family and fans of Peg McIntire will remember her long life and many, many good works at the St. Augustine Beach Pier Pavilion from 6:00 to 9:00 pm: for the specifics, contact John X (metanoia1@... tel. 504-1004) or Dee Lovell (doralovell@... tel. 814-6417).

And?

And that's (sfaik*) what's happening for pro-peace work in the G'ville area in June. This gives everybody that much more time to write letters, call Congresscritters, and otherwise take individual initiatives, right?
* "So Far As I Know" in txtspeak.

July will be ... well, even hotter. Vets for Peace will muster on the first Wednesday, 7/2, 7 pm, at Camp Camil (call 375-2563 for directions), and those other groups with regular schedules are also expected to follow their respective customs.

The Alachua County Greens and Vets for Peace will both set up tables near Alachua City Hall on the evening of Friday, 7/4, for outreach to fireworks fans. And the following day is, approximately, the deadline for getting your group's public events in the July-August edition of the Gainesville Iguana calendar (via pbutler@..., in case you were wondering).

And? and?

And that's about all there is to say right now about July's peace pursuits. There's a gaping hole in the above announcements, signifying the momentous decision by June's Peace Forum to adjourn until 2 pm on the first Saturday in August (8/2), thereby liberating all the representatives of pro-peace organizations and agitated individuals to make the patriotic most of July's 3-day weekend; the cookies, juice & conspiracies will resume the following month. (Subject to change if Peace Forum non-members G. Bush & D. Cheney decide the Middle East isn't hot enough and do something, ah, historic to follow up on the $300 million for "covert operations" against Iran just handed over to them by our Democratic-controlled Congress... Thanks, Nancy & Harry.)

What have I left out and gotten wrong this time? Tell me, tell all of us, tell  the Gainesville Activism Network calendar.

Bye, Bo!

Peace,

Pierce

OK this is what you do with power you have built on your integrity and courage.  The week you get more power and push pass O'Reilly as the most watched nightly news show, you push for real change.  I heart Keith.  Even if he just reports on the unbinding poll, the numbers are great, we should deliver the final to our member of Congress.

Please forward widely!!!!

Do you believe President Bush's actions justify impeachment?   * 703899 responses
Yes, between the secret spying, the deceptions leading to war and more, there is plenty to justify putting him on trial.
89%
No, like any president, he has made a few missteps, but nothing approaching "high crimes and misdemeanors."
4.2%
No, the man has done absolutely nothing wrong. Impeachment would just be a political lynching.

I don't know.

Just checkin' in again with my sisters & coordinators in Florida to get a feel for how many of you will be meeting me in Denver or M/SP for the conventions.  If so, which one are you putting your energy into or are you considering both?  Have you signed up?  Do so here even if you are not attending but still want to help out!  www.codepinkalert.org/conventions.

We're hoping that we will have enough in attendance that we will be our own peoples' delegation to the conventions!  Wouldn't that be cool?? So let me know if you are thinking about going, are sure you're going or sure that you won't be so we can get an idea how to organize. OK?

There's lots to do to help mobilize for conventions, even if you can't attend.  Interested?  Let me know!  Are you planning any other activities in Florida this summer?  Are you making any banners that can be used at the conventions? Don't forget to post your actions and photos at the local spotlight!

Are you interested in bird dogging candidates when they come to town?  Do you have any questions about our McCain and Obama campaigns?  What kind of legislative action work does your group do? Have you seen/read the new local groups guide and is it useful?  What's your group like these days (# of women, communities outreached to, favorite actions)?   Let me know so we can make sure you have all the tools available or create the tools you need.
Finally, for those of you with local websites, can you put the convention button on your site?  You can find them here:  www.codepinkalert.org/conventions

Please respond as soon as possible so we can let the staff know in retreat this week what our needs are in Florida.  I would love to have a huge pink Florida presence at the conventions so let me know how we can help you make that happen!
peace,
deidra

I just checked our local calendar on the national website and there were only two events listed for July 4th in the whole state! [see bottom]
I know there must be more .... so how's about everyone post their event to the calendar and I then I can just copy paste over to the Florida blog
It just takes a minute.  really.  thanks in advance to all those who read this in time and act on this message.

A note to ponder, at our last three events here in Orlando, we've had at least one new person say they read about our event on the national calendar after getting a national email.  They don't know about things if we forget to tell them.  Have a great 4th of July everyone!  We are celebrating all day long in Orlando!

Dear Impeachment Collegues in and outside the National Impeachment Network,

We've been waiting for this opportunity and it may finally be here.

MoveOn is asking members to tell them what to work on in the survey below.
Impeachment is #2 on their list of potential issues. If you want their 3 million+ members to help get impeachment started, please--- forward this survey to everyone on your email lists and everyone else you know, and ask them to rate impeachment "VERY INTERESTED".

NOTE: In order for impeachment to be ranked among the top three issues, DO NOT MARK ANY OTHER ISSUE "VERY INTERESTED."

Let's go people. This may be our best chance yet to get MoveOn on board!
******************************************************************************************************
Anyone can take this survey, here is the original email for it with the link and you do not have to sign into anything to take it, it takes only MOMENTS to do this, if the link is broken, copy and paste it to your browser and take the spaces out:

Dear MoveOn Member,

MoveOn has grown tremendously over the last several years and none of that growth would have been possible without your energy and support. From the war in Iraq to President Bush's plan to privatize Social Security, we have worked together to make sure that our voices are heard on the issues that matter most.

We've always focused on working on the issues that MoveOn members care about.  That's why our primary goal is to make sure you support the issues that we work on now and those we might work on in the future.

Can you take a moment to help us plan our future campaigns?

http://www.moveon.org/tellus/interest.html?id=13115-5739315-cO3Xd0x&t=1

This brief survey is meant to gauge how interested you are or would be in working on certain campaigns. Your answers will help us plan what we get involved in going forward.  And since we watch these responses carefully, we're counting on you to give us the unvarnished truth.

Please let us know what you think at:

http://www.moveon.org/tellus/interest.html?id=13115-5739315-cO3Xd0x&t=2

We're ready to take on more campaigns and have a bigger impact—but we want to know where you stand first.

Thanks for all you do,

Dear Folks,

I spoke with Kent Vann the director at the St. Francis House this morning, July 7, 2008. They have a desperate need for food.

Their pantry shelves are bare. The reserve food they keep in their two large freezers has been completely used up and the freezers have been unplugged to conserve electricity. Hundreds of hungry people come to St. Francis for food each week. Kent tells me that if they don¢t get some donations right away, many of the people who come to them for food will leave hungry.

Items St. Francis House needs most include:

Pasta

Rice

Eggs

Canned or fresh vegetables

Canned goods of any kind

Frozen meats such as chicken, ground beef, turkey

All contributions and donations to St. Francis House are tax deductible. If you have any questions, or would like to help, please call 378-9079 and speak with Kent or one of his staff.

Please pass this along to anyone who might be willing to help.

All the best,

Dear Global Exchange Supporter,

Six years ago, as the Bush administration, Congress and the Media were preparing for war with Iraq, would you have done more to prevent the war?

As early as this week the House of Representatives is likely to vote on Resolution 362, also known as the Iran War Resolution. In the Senate, Resolution 580, a sister resolution has been introduced by Indiana Democrat Evan Bayh.

Take action TODAY to stop passage of Resolution 362 and 580 to prevent war with Iran NOW.

Take Action...
Demand a NO vote to the "Iran War Resolutions" 362 and 580!

Write a letter to CongressWith our click and send letter tool you can write to members of both the House and Senate.  They need to hear from as many people as possible.

Send an email to all of your contacts.  Congress needs to hear a resolute NO to Resolution 362 in the House and Resolution 580 in the Senate.

This resolution essentially calls for an act of war - a naval blockade of Iran

The resolution's key section demands that the president:

  • Initiate an international effort to immediately increase economic, political, and diplomatic pressure on Iran
  • Impose stringent inspection requirements on all persons, vehicles, ships, planes, trains, and cargo entering or departing Iran
  • Verifiably suspend its nuclear enrichment activities by prohibiting the export to Iran of all refined petroleum products

CODEPINK blockades Rep. Ackerman's houseboat

In an early morning flotilla blockade, CODEPINK protested by land and sea
at Rep. Gary Ackerman's (D-NY) house-boat in DC on Wednesday.

Ackerman said "This is the most creative protest/demonstration I have ever seen in my life"
and then engaged in a lengthy discussion about the Iran sanctions proposed in Congress.
He also thanked CODEPINK for exercising our democratic rights.
i hope you have time to watch the video, it's awesome.  Diplomacy in action!

After bird dogging, occupying offices and discussing the Iran Sanctions being considered by the House at length with Rep. William Lacy Clay, amazingly the PINKs in Missouri have succeeded in getting Lacy to remove his co-sponsorship from the congressional record! wow.  read all about it below.

Any one think we can move Senator Nelson?

Hello all,
I just wanted to relay some success that we had here in Missouri.  Our Rep. Lacy Clay, has agreed to remove himself from co-sponsoring the recent resolution put forth by Rep. Ackerman, that could instigate violence in Iran.  I'm including a text written by a member of our group, Bill Ramsey:

Here is my account of our effort to convince Clay to withdraw his co-sponsorship of HCR 362:

Yesterday we received word from Rep. William Lacy Clay's chief to staff that he will be withdrawing his co-sponsorship of HR 362. Below is the Congressional Record of his request that his name be withdrawn from the co-sponsorship list.

Last week, we wrote letters asking that Clay withdraw.  We received letters back indicating that he would not.  On July  after a phone conversation with his foreign policy aid, fifteen local activists went to his local office seeking a conference call with Clay.  Within 30 minutes we were in a conference room discussing the resolution with Clay by teleconference.  He still held to his position of co-sponsoring the resolution.

After the conference call we remained in the office discussing the resolution with four of his local aides and among ourselves.  When the local staff announced that the office was closing, several of the activists announced that they were staying in the office until Clay changed his mind. The aides called Washington.

A few minutes Clay was on the phone asking us to leave and agreeing to meet with us again on July 9.  We remained in the office and a few minutes later his chief of staff called indicating that he personally would
meet with Clay all evening if necessary to discuss the resolution and that for us to call on July 9 at 10 AM to find out the results of that meeting and whether Clay would be available for another teleconference at 4:30 on July 9/ When I called back at 10 AM on July 9 , the Chief of staff gave me the word that Clay would withdraw his co-sponsorship and release a statement this afternoon.

Hopefully other groups around the country are having similar successes.  We will turn our efforts now to
Rep. Carnanhan (MO 3rd Congressional District).

I hope others are finding similiar success!

Greetings All:

Our SCHEDULE is from 4:00pm to 6:30pm, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at Archer
Rd. and 34th St., every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Univ. Av. and 13th St.

The tide has turned in our favor. Cindy Sheehan's moral authority in
galvanizing antiwar sentiments from all walks of life is testimonial to this
fact. The Bushites' criminal callousness in the handling of hurricane
Katrina before and after its landing has further opened the eyes of millions
of folks. Opinion poll after opinion poll have shown overwhelming majority
of the American people wanted troops out of Iraq NOW, yet Bushites and their
cohorts persist in carrying on with their immoral and illegal war.

Recent revelations on the Bushites' egregious disregard for the rule of law
manifested in, to name just a few, illegal spying, kidnapping, authorization
for torture, Abramoff scandal, etc. has only added insult to injury. Further
more, according to a report by Seymour Hersh, these depraved minds are
moving forward with a mad plan for a nuclear attack on Iran.

Also the Bush regime not only pays the bills for the Israeli war machine,
but also gives it the green light to intensify its war on the Palestinians
and Lebanese, rushes an emergency supply of fuel and precision-guided bombs
to enhance the Israeli killing and wrecking spree, while at the same time
blocks all international peace initiatives. And it is using the
Israeli-created humanitarian crisis as a dress rehearsal and a pretext for
attacks on Syria and Iran.

As the approval rating of the Bush regime plummets, its key figures are
stepping up their efforts in fear- and hate-mongering, pressuring Congress
to retroactively legalize torture, warrantless wiretapping and making
changes to War Crimes Act to retroactively protect regime elements from war
crimes prosecution.

With the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which permits
warrantless incarceration and torture of suspected terrorists, an American
police state is fast taking shape. As if the Bush regime has not usurped
sufficient dictatorial power, Frank Morales pointed out that "Public Law
109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122),
which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a
private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public
emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of
state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or
local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder.""

The Bush regime's condemnation of North Korea stinks of cant and hypocrisy.
All that the North Korea wanted from the US is a peace/nonaggresion treaty,
instead the Bush regime unilaterally abrogated the Agreed Framework
agreement between the Clinton administration and North Korea, recklessly
threatens North Korea by calling it part of the Axis-of-evil, etc. Thus
forcing North Korea to accelerate its development of a nuclear deterrence
capability while maintaining its willingness to negotiate with the US and
making Korea peninsula a nuclear weapons free zone.

According to the October 11th Lancet Journal Report: Bush's illegal and
immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq has caused 655,000 excess Iraqi
deaths over and above the base line annual mortality due to 12 years of
sanctions. We are not even talking about the number of Iraqis injured,
maimed, become sick due to lack of medicine or health care provider, with
broken up families, forced to flee their homes and country, etc.

In this mid-term election the electorates have delivered a resounding
rejection of the Bush agenda. Although the Dems who took over the leadership
of both chambers of Congress have wasted no time to dampen expectations.
However, more favorable political space have been opened up to restore the
Bill of Rights, roll back the police state and militarism, dump the Military
Commissions Act, repeal the Patriot Act, end the illegal and immoral
occupations, bring the troops home to save Iraqi, Afghani and American lives
as well as the environment, etc.

Just as Bush used the phony excuse of "fighting terrorism" to invade and
occupy Iraq, he is using the same excuse to justify support for the invasion
of Somalia by Ethiopia, as well as the killing of a large number of Somali
civilians by the US military. Contrary to heeding the voice of the people to
end the occupation and bring the troops home now, the Bush regime decided on
a troop surge to escalate the killing, aiming at turning sections of Baghdad
into another Fallujah to clear the way for the passage of the hydrocarbon
privatization laws by their Iraqi puppets. Simultaneously, this reckless
regime is intensifying its disinformation campaign on Iran to brainwash the
American people while heightening the military threat of imminent attack
against Iran.

Here's another ongoing outrage; the Bush regime is responding to the scandal
over the neglect of wounded troops with scapegoat, retaliation and cover-up
while continuing in sending more troops as executioner as well as cannon
fodder to wars of aggression and occupation based on lies and motivated by
war-profiteering, control of hydrocarbon resources and geo-strategic
advantage. And not just the Bush regime and the Repubs but also many Dems
are justifying support for these wars in the name of "Support Our Troops".
I.e. "Support the Troops" is the reason why the troops have to be sent into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation. In other
words, the warmongers' twisted logic says if we don't send the troops into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation, then we are
not supporting our troops.

Join us tomorrow at 34th St. and Archer Rd. We are always in need of folks
to join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:30pm. Bring your own
signs or use ours - we have lots of them.

Peace. Ku

Upcoming, too, is the January 2009 Inauguration in DC; educational trips to Afghanistan and other places - check out www.globalexchange. org
Do we, as a group want to work toward taking a trip together - some have suggested Venezuela, Afghanistan, Washington DC as well as the upcoming conventions.  Do we want to do fundraisers to help defray costs of travel?  Come to the meeting with your ideas.
Your pal for peace,
Jacque Betz

Howdy Peace Women,
Perhaps this would interest you or someone you know...They are looking for 3 to 5 interns.

Subject: Internship with Peaceful Paths

Below is an announcement forwarded to me by Anna Guest-Jelley, vice president of Gainesvillle Area NOW and Director of the Violence Prevention Program at Peaceful Paths.  It seems like a good opportunity to work with a wonderful feminist and see if this type of social work is up your ally.  Anyone who is interested should contact Anna (contact info at end of email).  She is looking for 3 - 5 interns for fall.

Hope this interests you,
Katie W.

Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network is now offering an exciting new internship opportunity in
hands-on grassroots social change work. Our Violence Prevention program works with local youth,
schools, and community agencies to prevent intimate partner violence before it occurs and build healthy
relationships. The Violence Prevention Internship Program has been developed to provide interns a
chance to both receive training about intimate partner violence prevention and to experience this work
first hand. Violence Prevention is a rapidly expanding field, and this is a great growth opportunity for
people interested in working in a variety of careers, including violence prevention, substance abuse
prevention, juvenile justice, social change, program planning and evaluation, and community organizing,
to name a few. Some of the things interns will be able to engage in are:
Experiential social change—learn what it's like to do this work on a day to day basis
Community networking with allied organizations
Tools to facilitate group discussions amongst youth
Discussion and personal reflection about intimate partner violence and oppression
Program planning and evaluation
Undergraduate and graduate students are encouraged to apply. For more information or to apply,

California has a huge contigent of 40 activists traveling to conventions!  Many other states have 5 or 6 activists traveling as Delegates of Peace to Denver and the Twin Cities. If you are still thinking about coming and want to hear from folks who are planning to attend, or if you are planning local support parties before and during the conventions, please join our discussion and media conference call this week.

July 29, 2008

Hi,

Welcome to all the new activists who joined our CODEPINK Peace Delegation this week!  And welcome back to the weekly update to those of you who have been on board.

We had a huge surge of registrations this week and every one is scrambling to make their travel and accommodations. Locals around the country are having FUNdraisers to help sponsor their local activists make the trips to the Conventions. We all hope to have as many inspired members of CODEPINK at the DNC/RNC this summer as possible and I'm so glad that you will be there to witness these historic moments with us.

We have organized two more Tele-conferences for you and invite you to join us for the hour long training and discussions. On the first call you will get to meet our new National Media Coordinator, Jean Stevens as she walks us through the new media tools kit she has developed just for us!  The media just loves a local slant on a national issue so expect the press to be very excited to talk to you.

NEXT CONFERENCE CALLS
Wednesday, July 30, 6PST/9EST (with Jean our National Media Maven)
& Tuesday, Aug 5, 6PST/9EST

How to join Conference Calls:
Dial (309) 946-5100 and when prompted enter code 26337465# (that's CODEPINK#). Long distance charges apply, but there is no additional fee to join the conference call.

GOT YOUR COSTUMES READY?
Coming soon to our Conventions site! Check out our new "Conventions Affinity Groups" and see what radical, peaceful costume accessories you need to pick up before you come. www.codepinkalert.org/conventions

DO YOU KNOW WHEN & WHERE YOU'RE GOING?
Conventions are hectic with numerous events going on simultaneously.  We've tried to make it easy for you by posting our events and others on a google calendar that has the locations tagged and clickable for easy mapping.  Check out our new Action Calendar & Google Maps always found in the left side bar of the "Rock the Parties" page at
www.codepinkalert.org/conventions

WHAT ARE WE MAKING?  HOW YOU CAN HELP!
Check out our new list of messages for Banners and Visuals and let us know what you are bringing so we can inventory the props. There are lots of ways you can help take part in bringing the peace message to the conventions so check out the NEEDS list and pick something you can do too!

I hope I see you all soon.

From Florida with Love,
Deidra Lynch

Grandparents for Peace will get off their rockers and head for St. Marys, Georiga --
Site of  The Naval Submarine Base Kings Bay --
for a vigil in recognition of Nagasaki Day

Renee Mintz of St. Augustine and Florida Coordinator of Grandparents for Peace states, "We have chosen the Trident Submarine Base at St.Marys because the six nuclear subs with their intercontinental ballistic missiles carrying many hydrogen bombs are in all truth weapons of mass destruction. They represent a real danger to the future of Planet Earth.  We grandparents have lived long and wonderful lives and want to hand a world over to our children and grandchildren where they can grow up free from the fear of a nuclear holocaust."

Ms. Mintz expects that members from other peace and justice groups will be present at the Stimson Gate and the First Amendment Park outside the Trident Nuclear Weapons Base.  Any grandparents in the local area  -- or other younger ctizens  -- who share similar concerns about the dangers of Trident submarines are cordially invited to the Vigil and the lunch that will follow at a local restaurant.  (In other words, this vigil and fellowship meal are for everyone of any age, but proudly sponsored by our elders.)

Please bring folding chairs, signs and plenty of water.
