Hi Gainesville Pinks,
Mark your calendar for this Wednesday, Nov 7, Gainesville Downtown Community Plaza, for the annual Homeless Night Out.  Bring donations of blankets, coats, socks, tents, and cold weather gear to the Plaza Nov 7, anytime between 3 and 11 p.m.
I firmly believe that if we are to end war, we must end poverty and it is important to work on local and well as global poverty issues.  I firmly believe, too, that the most important thing that you can do is SHOW UP for peace, justice, events --
Your pal for peace,
Jacque

New York -- Iraq war veterans now stationed at a base here in upstate New
York say that morale among US soldiers in the country is so poor, many are
simply parking their Humvees and pretending to be on patrol, a practice
dubbed "search and avoid" missions.

Phil Aliff is an active duty soldier with the 10th Mountain Division
stationed at Fort Drum. He served nearly one year in Iraq from August 2005
to July 2006, in the areas of Abu Ghraib and Fallujah, both west of Baghdad.

"Morale was incredibly low," said Aliff, adding that he joined the military
because he was raised in a poor family by a single mother and had few other
prospects. "Most men in my platoon in Iraq were just in from combat tours in
Afghanistan."

According to Aliff, their mission was to help the Iraqi army "stand up" in
the Abu Ghraib area of western Baghdad, but in fact his platoon was doing
all the fighting without support from the Iraqis they were supposedly
preparing to take control of the security situation.

"I never heard of an Iraqi unit that was able to operate on their own," said
Aliff, who is now a member of the group Iraq Veterans Against the War
(IVAW). "The only reason we were replaced by an Iraqi army unit was for
publicity."

Aliff said he participated in roughly 300 patrols. "We were hit by so many
roadside bombs we became incredibly demoralized, so we decided the only way
we wouldn't be blown up was to avoid driving around all the time."

"So we would go find an open field and park, and call our base every hour to
tell them we were searching for weapons caches in the fields and doing
weapons patrols and everything was going fine," he said, adding, "All our
enlisted people became very disenchanted with our chain of command."

Aliff, who suffers from post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), refused to
return to Iraq with his unit, which arrived in Kirkuk two weeks ago.
"They've already lost a guy, and they are now fostering the sectarian
violence by arming the Sunnis while supporting the Shi'ites politically ...
classic divide and conquer."

Aliff said he is set to be discharged by the military next month because
they claim his PTSD "is untreatable by their doctors".

According to the Department of Veterans Affairs (VA), the number of Iraq and
Afghanistan war veterans seeking treatment for PTSD increased nearly 70% in
the 12 months ending on June 30.

The nearly 50,000 VA-documented PTSD cases greatly exceed the 30,000
military personnel that the Pentagon officially classifies as wounded in
both occupations.

VA records show that mental health has become the second-largest area of
illness for which veterans of the ongoing occupations are seeking treatment
at VA hospitals and clinics. The total number of mental health cases among
war veterans increased by 58%; from 63,767 on June 30, 2006, to 100,580 on
June 30, 2007, according to the VA.

Other active duty Iraq veterans tell similar stories of disobeying orders so
as not to be attacked so frequently.

"We'd go to the end of our patrol route and set up on top of a bridge and
use it as an over-watch position," Eli Wright, also an active duty soldier
with the 10th Mountain Division, said. "We would just sit with our
binoculars and observe rather than sweep. We'd call in radio checks every
hour and say we were doing sweeps."

Wright added, "It was a common tactic, a lot of people did that. We'd just
hang out, listen to music, smoke cigarettes, and pretend." The 26-year-old
medic complained that his unit did not have any armored Humvees during his
time in Iraq, where he was stationed in Ramadi, capital of the volatile
al-Anbar province.

"We put sandbags on the floors of our vehicles, which had canvas doors,"
said Wright, who was in Iraq from September 2003 until September 2004. "By
the end of our tour, we were bolting any metal we could find to our Humvees.
Everyone was doing this, and we didn't get armored Humvees in country until
after we left."

Other veterans, like 25-year-old Nathan Lewis, who was in Iraq for the
invasion of March 2003 until June of that year while serving in the 214th
field artillery brigade, complained of lack of training for what they were
ordered to do, in addition to not having armored Humvees for their travels.

"We never got training for a lot of the work we did," he explained. "We had
a white phosphorous mortar round that cooked off in the back of one of our
trucks, because we loaded that with some other ammo, and we weren't trained
how to do it the right way."

The "search and avoid" missions appear to have been commonplace around much
of Iraq for years now.

Geoff Millard served nine years in the New York Army National Guard, and was
in Iraq from October 2004 until October 2005 working for a general at a
Tactical Operation Center.

Millard, also a member of IVAW, said that part of his duties included
reporting "significant actions", or SIGACTS, which is how the US military
describes an attack on their forces.

"We had units that never called in SIGACTS," Millard, who monitored highly
volatile areas like Baquba, Tikrit and Samarra, said. "When I was there two
years ago, there were at least five companies that never had SIGACTS. I
think 'search and avoids' have been going on there for a long time."

Millard said "search and avoid" missions continue today across Iraq. "One of
my buddies is in Baghdad right now and we email all the time," he explained,
"He just told me that nearly each day they pull into a parking lot, drink
soda and shoot at the cans. They pay Iraqi kids to bring them things and
spread the word that they are not doing anything and to please just leave
them alone."

Subject: JOIN US TOMORROW PICKETING AGAINST THE BUSH AGENDA
ku4peace
Send Email Send Email

Greetings All:

[I'd like to propose to move our schedule back to our shorter daylight
schedule, i.e. from 4:00pm to 6:00pm or till dark, on the same days as
before. - Ku]

Our NEW SCHEDULE is from 4:00pm to 6:30pm, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at
Archer Rd. and 34th St., every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Univ. Av. and 13th St.

The tide has turned in our favor. Cindy Sheehan's moral authority in
galvanizing antiwar sentiments from all walks of life is testimonial to this
fact. The Bushites' criminal callousness in the handling of hurricane
Katrina before and after its landing has further opened the eyes of millions
of folks. Opinion poll after opinion poll have shown overwhelming majority
of the American people wanted troops out of Iraq NOW, yet Bushites and their
cohorts persist in carrying on with their immoral and illegal war.

Recent revelations on the Bushites' egregious disregard for the rule of law
manifested in, to name just a few, illegal spying, kidnapping, authorization
for torture, Abramoff scandal, etc. has only added insult to injury. Further
more, according to a report by Seymour Hersh, these depraved minds are
moving forward with a mad plan for a nuclear attack on Iran.

Also the Bush regime not only pays the bills for the Israeli war machine,
but also gives it the green light to intensify its war on the Palestinians
and Lebanese, rushes an emergency supply of fuel and precision-guided bombs
to enhance the Israeli killing and wrecking spree, while at the same time
blocks all international peace initiatives. And it is using the
Israeli-created humanitarian crisis as a dress rehearsal and a pretext for
attacks on Syria and Iran.

As the approval rating of the Bush regime plummets, its key figures are
stepping up their efforts in fear- and hate-mongering, pressuring Congress
to retroactively legalize torture, warrantless wiretapping and making
changes to War Crimes Act to retroactively protect regime elements from war
crimes prosecution.

With the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which permits
warrantless incarceration and torture of suspected terrorists, an American
police state is fast taking shape. As if the Bush regime has not usurped
sufficient dictatorial power, Frank Morales pointed out that "Public Law
109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122),
which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a
private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public
emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of
state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or
local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder.""

The Bush regime's condemnation of North Korea stinks of cant and hypocrisy.
All that the North Korea wanted from the US is a peace/nonaggresion treaty,
instead the Bush regime unilaterally abrogated the Agreed Framework
agreement between the Clinton administration and North Korea, recklessly
threatens North Korea by calling it part of the Axis-of-evil, etc. Thus
forcing North Korea to accelerate its development of a nuclear deterrence
capability while maintaining its willingness to negotiate with the US and
making Korea peninsula a nuclear weapons free zone.

According to the October 11th Lancet Journal Report: Bush's illegal and
immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq has caused 655,000 excess Iraqi
deaths over and above the base line annual mortality due to 12 years of
sanctions. We are not even talking about the number of Iraqis injured,
maimed, become sick due to lack of medicine or health care provider, with
broken up families, forced to flee their homes and country, etc.

In this mid-term election the electorates have delivered a resounding
rejection of the Bush agenda. Although the Dems who took over the leadership
of both chambers of Congress have wasted no time to dampen expectations.
However, more favorable political space have been opened up to restore the
Bill of Rights, roll back the police state and militarism, dump the Military
Commissions Act, repeal the Patriot Act, end the illegal and immoral
occupations, bring the troops home to save Iraqi, Afghani and American lives
as well as the environment, etc.

Just as Bush used the phony excuse of "fighting terrorism" to invade and
occupy Iraq, he is using the same excuse to justify support for the invasion
of Somalia by Ethiopia, as well as the killing of a large number of Somali
civilians by the US military. Contrary to heeding the voice of the people to
end the occupation and bring the troops home now, the Bush regime decided on
a troop surge to escalate the killing, aiming at turning sections of Baghdad
into another Fallujah to clear the way for the passage of the hydrocarbon
privatization laws by their Iraqi puppets. Simultaneously, this reckless
regime is intensifying its disinformation campaign on Iran to brainwash the
American people while heightening the military threat of imminent attack
against Iran.

Here's another ongoing outrage; the Bush regime is responding to the scandal
over the neglect of wounded troops with scapegoat, retaliation and cover-up
while continuing in sending more troops as executioner as well as cannon
fodder to wars of aggression and occupation based on lies and motivated by
war-profiteering, control of hydrocarbon resources and geo-strategic

are justifying support for these wars in the name of "Support Our Troops".
I.e. "Support the Troops" is the reason why the troops have to be sent into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation. In other
words, the warmongers' twisted logic says if we don't send the troops into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation, then we are
not supporting our troops.

to join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:30pm. Bring your own

I was asked to contact each of you & extend an invite for you or a representative of your group to attend this meeting. It is short notice but it was determined it was an opportunity to take advantage of people traveling to the prison for the execution scheduled that night at 6pm. We are in hopes of a stay but expect that to be in the 11th hour.
Please come if you can. We need to end state sanctioned killing as well as nation sanctioned killing like the war. We need to refuse to allow such thinking whether on a local, state or national level.
See invite below. I will be calling you to follow up. Let me know if you have any questions.

Hi Pinks, Peace Pals,
This was forwarded to me from Scott Camil.  Sunday is Armistice Day, Veterans Day. Please sing a song for peace on 11/11 at 11:11.  Let's work to stop the butchering... Your pal, Jacque

I will come to a time in my backwards trip when November eleventh, accidentally my birthday, was a sacred day called Armistice Day. When I was a boy, and when Dwayne Hoover was a boy, all the people of all the nations which had fought in the First World War were silent during the eleventh minute of the eleventh hour of Armistice Day, which was the eleventh day of the eleventh month.
It was during that minute in nineteen hundred and eighteen, that millions upon millions of human beings stopped butchering one another. I have talked to old men who were on battlefields during that minute. They have told me in one way or another that the sudden silence was the Voice of God. So we still have among us some men who can remember when God spoke clearly to mankind.
Armistice Day has become Veterans' Day. Armistice Day was sacred. Veterans' Day is not.
So I will throw Veterans' Day over my shoulder. Armistice Day I will keep. I don't want to throw away any sacred things.
What else is sacred? Oh, Romeo and Juliet, for instance.
And all music is.

Howdy,
I was at a peace potluck last night.  There were five IVAW members and, Sgt. Selena with her beautiful 4 year old daughter (in pink!).  Sgt. Selena is an active duty military woman, antiwar, with a fascinating personal story.  She is stationed in north Florida until March.
I asked her how CodePINK could help her and other antiwar active military personal.  She said that they need a safe place to drop in, meet, and share their stories, feelings.  Some of you may remember the Coffee Houses that came about for Vietnam Vets during that war.  Selena said there is currently a Coffee House set up near Ft. Mead, Maryland; and, she feels, because the military folks there don't feel so isolated in their opposition to war, they are now over 25 strong in opposition to the Iraq war-- being able to meet a this special military Coffee House.  Selena said we need to help facilitate the return of these Coffee Houses, esp. near military bases.  So, what are your thoughts, experiences and ideas in helping facilitate bringing back the Coffee House concept?

Greetings All:

Our NEW SCHEDULE is from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at
Archer Rd. and 34th St., every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Univ. Av. and 13th St.

Here's another ongoing outrage; the Bush regime is responding to the scandal
over the neglect of wounded troops with scapegoat, retaliation and cover-up
while continuing in sending more troops as executioner as well as cannon
fodder to wars of aggression and occupation based on lies and motivated by
war-profiteering, control of hydrocarbon resources and geo-strategic
advantage. And not just the Bush regime and the Repubs but also many Dems
are justifying support for these wars in the name of "Support Our Troops".
I.e. "Support the Troops" is the reason why the troops have to be sent into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation. In other
words, the warmongers' twisted logic says if we don't send the troops into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation, then we are
not supporting our troops.

Join us tomorrow at 13th St. and Univ. Av. We are always in need of folks to
join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:00pm. Bring your own
signs or use ours - we have lots of them.

HOWDY,
Alberto Gonzales will speak at the University of Florida's Phillips Center for the Performing Arts on Monday, November 19 at 7:15 p.m.  Non students may get a free ticket beginning Friday, November 16, at the Phillips Center Box Office, Gainesville.
You can go to http://www.alligator.org/articles/2007/11/08/news/campus to see details.  The VFP Gainesville Chapters posted information about Gonzales visit at their yahoo group last night, the word is beginning to spread around town as to how to properly treat Gonzales (who is being paid $40,000 for his first college talk since being fired).  The local peace folks are discussing what to do at this time.  I'm sure that the UF Student groups, SDS and SAW,  will have a presence at this event, too.  The weekly sign holding protest at 13th and University, Gvl, is today, Tuesday, from 4-6 and I'll see and talk to several of the local folks who will actually show up for a Gonzales protest Monday, Nov 19, at the Phillips Center.  So, folks here in Gainesville are talking about how to respond to Gonzales; one idea so far is to have a silent protest, with signs, of course, in front of the Phillips Center 315 Hull Rd. Gainesville.  Silence is not (yet) against the law, and you will not be subject to arrest for standing silent with a sign.
To get to the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts:  Take the I-75 Archer Rd. exit (Gainesville has 4 exits off I-75) and turn East, towards town, on Archer Rd.  Proceed to SW 34th St. and turn south (left); proceed about a mile to Hull Rd. and turn right.  Follow the parking signs.  Phone 352-372-6780 for the Phillips Center.

Of course, if you disrupt the talk you may be escorted out, you are subject to arrest and you may be tasered if you show any resistance to police commands.  If you plan to get arrested, be sure to bring ID, and, depending on your record, you may or may not be booked on UF campus and released or taken to ACDC, processed and released.  I was arrested on the UF campus when I was a fulltime student, protesting Apartheid back in 1985.  I was booked and released at the UF police station, charged with "Disrupting the Function of Education." So, if you are from out of the area, the circumstances as well as charges may be different. There will be legal observers from the ACLU there, I am sure.  One legal observer is a CodePINKgainesville member...Howdy!!

I'd say, if you want to come to Gainesville to protest Alberto Gonzales on Monday, November 19 at 7:15, just come on.  Show up outside the Phillips Center about 6:30 p.m. If you are not a UF student and want a FREE ticket to go inside and hear him speak, call the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts Box Office  352-372-6780.
Anyone coming from afar, of course, can show up earlier, and if welcome to come to my farm.

Anyone who needs a place to stay in Gainesville is welcome at my farm.  In my home (a 3/2) I currently have two bedrooms available; there's two twin beds in one room; the other room can use a camp mattress for the carpeted floor; there's a guest bathroom.  A comfy couch.  My cabin is currently occupied until December 15.  Of course folks are welcome to bring a tent and camp overnight.  Bring warm clothing and a nice warm blanket as it has been chilly at night.  Coming up from south Florida, one can forget that here in north-central Florida we have some chilly, cold weather.  Wear warm socks and bring a coat!

Friends,

A Federal District Court Judge has stayed the Mark Schwab execution.
The State of Florida has appealed the decision.  Legal experts report
that the 11th Circuit Court may overturn this decision, which means it
would then go to the U.S. Supreme Court where it is highly probable
that another stay would be issued.

Once again, we are hoping for the best, but preparing for the worst.
Calls will go out to as many vigil leaders as possible should the
courts uphold the current stay or issue a new stay.  The N.E. Fla
strategy meeting is still set for 2 pm to 4 pm.

1982 was the last year without an execution in Florida...25 years.  We
are hopeful that 2007 will be free of these killings.

Federal judge stays Florida execution pending high court ruling
7 PM EDT 11-14-07

MIAMI (AFP) β€” A federal judge in Miami on Wednesday stayed the
execution of a convicted child killer and rapist pending a decision by
the US Supreme Court on whether lethal injections violate the
constitution.

Sentenced in 1982 for the kidnapping, rape and murder of an 11-year-old
boy, Mark Dean Schwab had been scheduled to be put to death on Thursday.

Florida's Governor Charlie Crist signed Schwab's death warrant in July,
ending a moratorium on capital punishment the state had adopted seven
months earlier following a botched execution.

But Judge Anne Corway ruled that Schwab's execution "must be stayed for
a relatively short time until the Supreme Court renders its judgment."

The US Supreme Court is to rule whether lethal injection, used in
virtually all US executions, is constitutional, after several death row
inmates claimed violates the eighth amendment of the US constitution
prohibiting "cruel and unusual punishments."

The argument is based on Florida's December 2006 execution of convicted
murderer Angel Nieves Diaz, who had to be given two lethal doses after
a needle missed his vein and pierced tissue instead. His execution took
34 minutes.

In 2006, there were 53 executions in the United States, all but one by
lethal injection, according to official data. The Death Penalty
Information Center lists 42 executions so far this year.

Thanks to all those who have called and emailed Gov. Crist.

We plan to spice up our monthly VFP picket on Archer and 34th Street
this next Tuesday with some costumes and creative signs. I have 2 extra
masks for any interested parties. You may dress in any appropriate
outfit with matching signs. Center stage is only about a block away for
anyone who would like to do some serious dress up. I talked to them and
although they do not rent masks and the minimum on costumes is 3 days,
they do have an Uncle Sam costume which would be great. The bonus here
is that if you plan ahead the recruiting station is only one door away
and you can walk by in costume with a sign on the way to your car and
back again. ;-)

Hope to see you out on the corner with us this week in costume or not -
bring your own signs or use ours: Archer and 34th Street - 3 to 6pm on

you going to be there? I can hold a tx for you, if so. I think only Lydia from
Tallahassee is coming; maybe she will bring her husband, I don't know.
I got a ticket for Jerry Seinfeld's Feb 22 show at 7. I got end row seat in
the orchestra section F so I am happy. I'm going to the Democractic Party's
Blue Door Cafe social today from 5-7 and smooze with the party faithful. It's
at 901 NW 8th Avenue, Suite A3 Happy Hour 5-7 with light refreshments.
So, hope to see you sooonnnnnnnnn.

Hi Ellen,
It was at Scott and Sherrie's house that I met Selena and was so impressed by
how brave she is. Active duty sergeant stationed here in Florida and antiwar -
a tough spot to be in. She plans to come to the VFP Winter Solstice Concert
Dec. 21 at the UU Church on 34th St. here in Gainesville. CodePINK will have a
booth there selling tees and tings. I will also display the Peace Ribbon
Project so if any of the Melrose women for peace can come in the the Concert
early on that Friday, Dec. 21, I can always use help displaying the Peace Ribbon
and can also use a hand at the booth that evening!
So sorry I won't see you at the Monday sign-waving in Melrose. I ended up
getting 4 tickets for the Gonzales thingy at the Phillips Center on Monday
evening. I think people are showing up about 6 or 6:30 to hold signs outside.
If anyone wants a tx, that would be A-OK.
Have a great trip and thanks for all you do for peace, too! You rock!
Your pink peace pal,

Subject: Jungle News: Great news for the 9 monkeys at risk!

November 16, 2007

Dear Friends of Jungle Friends,

We did it!! The indoor enclosures arrived today and the monkeys will be coming to Jungle Friends on Wednesday of next week. What a wonderful Thanksgiving for these little guys!

Not only did we get all of the funds needed for the indoor enclosures - we also received enough in donations for ALL of the outdoor habitats too!! Thank you, thank you and thank you again to all of our compassionate donors who were so generous!

But wait, there's more!  The Dharma Foundation has awarded us a grant to hire a caregiver for one year to help with our unexpected arrivals. And who better for the task than Brittany Adair! Many of you know Brittany; she has been a part of our Jungle Friends family since May of 2005 and has completed two successful internships here at Jungle Friends. We are happy to announce her arrival to fill the caregiver position made possible by the Dharma Foundation!

We are launching a campaign called 'The Hundredth Monkey' to fundraise for our Laboratory Monkey Retirement Fund. If you are not on our mailing list or know anyone who would like to be on our list, please send CJ@... the postal addresses to be included. (We do not sell or trade our lists.)

'The Hundredth Monkey' campaign will not only help these nine monkeys, but will help us to offer a safe haven for many other monkeys that will be retiring from research very soon. Among the retirees Jungle Friends plans to accept are 5 to 7 pairs of 'special needs' cotton-top tamarins. The research was started in the early 1970s and the University is anxious to rehome these monkeys to Jungle Friends and is willing to help out financially! Monet and Xena are two of the cotton-top tamarin monkeys who hope to call Jungle Friends home next spring.

Monet

Xena

A beautiful song called 'The Hundredth Monkey' was written for Jungle Friends, and we have used it to create a powerful new video to bring awareness to the plight of monkeys in captivity.  The video includes some wonderful scenes of the Jungle Friends monkeys playing at the sanctuary. You will love the song and will fall in love with the monkeys! Please take ten minutes right now to watch the video at this link:  junglefriends.org/video_hundredth.shtml, and then forward the link to everyone you know.

When you make a donation to the Jungle Friends monkeys as a gift to honor someone special, we will acknowledge your donation by sending them a beautiful monkey card.

Please help us make retirement a reality for the cotton-top tamarins - make a donation today!

Lots of monkey love,

Kari and the monks

Please forward this post to everyone you know!

Subject: JOIN US TOMORROW PICKETING AGAINST THE BUSH AGENDA
ku4peace
Send Email Send Email

Greetings All:

Our NEW SCHEDULE is from 4:00pm to 6:00pm, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at
Archer Rd. and 34th St., every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Univ. Av. and 13th St.

Here's another ongoing outrage; the Bush regime is responding to the scandal
over the neglect of wounded troops with scapegoat, retaliation and cover-up
while continuing in sending more troops as executioner as well as cannon
fodder to wars of aggression and occupation based on lies and motivated by
war-profiteering, control of hydrocarbon resources and geo-strategic

Join us tomorrow at 34th St. and Archer Rd. We are always in need of folks
to join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:00pm. Bring your own
signs or use ours - we have lots of them.

Peace. Ku
