On Monday, May 28th, 2007, which is also Memorial Day, There will be a event held in what is known as "Tent City" in South east Gainesville, to give support and encouragement to the homeless of our community who reside in this area. This event is entitled "Takin' It To The Streets: Reaching Out In Support". This event rally, is a  part of an on-going campaign by Rev. Griner, also entitlted "Takin' It To The Streets", a campaign whereby the needs of the people are met wherever the people may happen to be. This campaign is based in part on a 1970's song, "Takin' It To The Streets", by the Doobie Brothers. The event will begin at approximately 5pm, and Rev. Griner will be accompanied by Gainesville City Commissioner Jack Donovan, who is also a minister and Bob and Arupa Freeman, local activists who operate the Home Van, which gives support as well as food and needed supplies to the homeless of Gainesville and Alachua County. Other local leaders and activists will also be present for the rally. Any residents and other local leaders are welcomed to attend this event.

Subject: Press release RE Memorial Day

Experience Memorial Day Monday May 28th by visiting the Veterans for Peace
2007 Memorial Day Display in Gainesville.  The display will consist of 4 rows of
tombstones a mile long on the south side of NW 8th Ave. between NW 34th St
and NW 23rd ST. This Display will be up all day.
The tombstones will  have the name, date of death, age, branch of service, rank,
hometown and state of American service people killed in The "War against Terrorism"
in Afghanistan and The War for "Regime Change" in Iraq.
The display will be organized by the theater, year and date of Death.
On the north side of 8th Avenue, there will be a display of "The Cost of War".

The corporate media has relegated these wars to the back pages.
For the most part the only Americans that are making a sacrifice in
these wars are the Service Members and their Families. For the rest of America,
it's out of sight out of mind, including the fact that much of our tax money that
could be used for legitimate needs is being transferred to corporate America
who, rather than being willing to make the same Patriotic sacrifices that
our service members and their families are making, are actually gouging
the troops and the public to make windfall profits at the expense of the troops and the
public.
This Memorial Day, come on by and take a look at what we have paid so far.

$150 million in cuts to critical and vital services for some of the state's most vulnerable citizens. The drastic cost cutting measures being considered will mean that thousands of individuals may be forced into more costly care; thousands of individuals who live independently may lose their homes; and thousands of families may be unable to keep their loved ones at home.

Hi CodePINKgainesville:
I'm as sick as you are that the Democrats caved in and gave the war machine another bunch of billion.  Does anyone know what percent of this latest round of funding goes to private military contractors such as Halliburton and Blackwater?  I "heard" a rumor that 90% of the funds allocated to the military goes to private contractors???? Anyone know?
Below is another letter from Cindy Sheehan and is well worth the read.  Hope to see you this weekend in pink -- perhaps at the display on NW 8th Avenue and 34th St. Monday or at 5 p.m. that same day in support of Tent City?  I put a sign on my mailbox today, "HOW MANY MORE?"
Peace,

May 26, 2007

Join Cindy Sheehan at Camp Casey this weekend. A memorial day service will be held in the afternoon on the 28th. After the service there will be a BBQ. Everyone is welcome.

Dublin, Ireland

Dear Democratic Congress,

Hello, my name is Cindy Sheehan and my son Casey Sheehan was killed on April 04, 2004 in Sadr City, Baghdad, Iraq. He was killed when the Republicans still were in control of Congress. Naively, I set off on my tireless campaign calling on Congress to rescind George's authority to wage his war of terror while asking him "for what noble cause" did Casey and thousands of other have to die. Now, with Democrats in control of Congress, I have lost my optimistic naiveté and have become cynically pessimistic as I see you all caving into as one Daily Kos poster called: "Mr. 28%"

There is absolutely no sane or defensible reason for you to hand Bloody King George more money to condemn more of our brave, tired, and damaged soldiers and the people of Iraq to more death and carnage. You think giving him more money is politically expedient, but it is a moral abomination and every second the occupation of Iraq endures, you all have more blood on your hands.

Ms. Pelosi, Speaker of the House, said after George signed the new weak as a newborn baby funding authorization bill: "Now, I think the president's policy will begin to unravel." Begin to unravel? How many more of our children will have to be killed and how much more of Iraq will have to be demolished before you all think enough unraveling has occurred? How many more crimes will BushCo be allowed to commit while their poll numbers are crumbling before you all gain the political "courage" to hold them accountable. If Iraq hasn't unraveled in Ms. Pelosi's mind, what will it take? With almost 700,000 Iraqis dead and four million refugees (which the US refuses to admit) how could it get worse? Well, it is getting worse and it can get much worse thanks to your complicity.

Being cynically pessimistic, it seems to me that this new vote to extend the war until the end of September, (and let's face it, on October 1st, you will give him more money after some more theatrics, which you think are fooling the anti-war faction of your party) will feed right into the presidential primary season and you believe that if you just hang on until then, the Democrats will be able to re-take the White House. Didn't you see how "well" that worked for John Kerry in 2004 when he played the politics of careful fence sitting and pandering? The American electorate are getting disgusted with weaklings who blow where the wind takes them while frittering away our precious lifeblood and borrowing money from our new owners, the Chinese.

I knew having a Democratic Congress would make no difference in grassroots action. That's why we went to DC when you all were sworn in to tell you that we wanted the troops back from Iraq and BushCo held accountable while you pushed for ethics reform which is quite a hoot?don't' you think? We all know that it is affordable for you all to play this game of political mayhem because you have no children in harm's way?let me tell you what it is like:

You watch your reluctant soldier march off to a war that neither you nor he agrees with. Once your soldier leaves the country all you can do is worry. You lie awake at night staring at the moon wondering if today will be the day that you get that dreaded knock on your door. You can't concentrate, you can't eat, and your entire life becomes consumed with apprehension while you are waiting for the other shoe to drop.

Then, when your worst fears are realized, you begin a life of constant pain, regret, and longing. Everyday is hard, but then you come up on "special" days?like upcoming Memorial Day. Memorial Day holds double pain for me because, not only are we supposed to honor our fallen troops, but Casey was born on Memorial Day in 1979. It used to be a day of celebration for us and now it is a day of despair. Our needlessly killed soldiers of this war and the past conflict in Vietnam have all left an unnecessary trail of sorrow and deep holes of absence that will never be filled

So, Democratic Congress, with the current daily death toll of 3.72 troops per day, you have condemned 473 more to these early graves. 473 more lives wasted for your political greed: Thousands of broken hearts because of your cowardice and avarice. How can you even go to sleep at night or look at yourselves in a mirror? How do you put behind you the screaming mothers on both sides of the conflict? How does the agony you have created escape you? It will never escape me?I can't run far enough or hide well enough to get away from it.

By the end of September, we will be about 80 troops short of another bloody milestone: 4000, and MoveOn.org will hold nationwide candlelight vigils and you all will be busy passing legislation that will snuff the lights out of thousands more human beings.

Congratulations Congress, you have bought yourself a few more months of an illegal and immoral bloodbath. And you know you mean to continue it indefinitely so "other presidents" can solve the horrid problem BushCo forced our world into.

It used to be George Bush's war. You could have ended it honorably. Now it is yours and you all will descend into calumnious history with BushCo.

The Camp Casey Peace Institute is calling all citizens who are as disgusted as we are with you all to join us in Philadelphia on July 4th to try and figure a way out of this "two" party system that is bought and paid for by the war machine which has a stranglehold on every aspect of our lives. As for myself, I am leaving the Democratic Party. You have completely failed those who put you in power to change the direction our country is heading. We did not elect you to help sink our ship of state but to guide it to safe harbor.

We do not condone our government's violent meddling in sovereign countries and we condemn the continued murderous occupation of Iraq.

We gave you a chance, you betrayed us.

Sincerely,
Cindy Sheehan

The "Takin' It To The Streets" support and encouragement rally for the residents of "Tent City" will begin with participants and supporters meeting on Monday, May 28th at the home of Bob and Arupa Freeman, located at 307 SE 6th street. Their home is downtown near the Hippodrome. Drive east down SE 2nd Place, past the Hippodrome, and keep going until you get to SE 6th, and then turn right, and you are then on the Freeman's block. The house is on the left-hand side of the street, and has an old gray Dodge Ram van parked in the driveway. This gathering of participants and supporters will begin at 4:30pm. If you get lost on the way, you may call the Freemans at 372-0960 or 372-4825.
From the Freeman home, the participants and supporters will then proceed to Tent City. Once again, the primary purpose of this rally is two-fold: To just give simple support and encouragent to those who are homeless, along with giving them something to eat, and to keep attention focused on the urgent need, until the "one-stop" center becomes a reality, to focus on alternatives to the creation of the kinds of outdoor campsites such as Tent City, and having action being taken with compassion as opposed to judgement, and patience as opposed to intolerance. This must be the message of moment, and it must be shared near and far. For additional information, contact Rev. Griner at 377-5022 or 665-4066.

On the Saturday of Memorial Day weekend. the National Civil Rights Museum hosted the Peace Ribbon panels.  Three of the soldiers families attended to look at the panel made for their son/grandson/cousin/nephew.   One mother traveled the entire exhibit, reading each panel and came up to me and said, "this needed to be done".  She was glad to see her son will be presented to the public as a person with a face, a name, and a family.  Our local press was very supportive writing some nice pieces for the newspaper and doing decent spots on it on television.

If you group hasn't hosted this exhibit, or participated in making panels for it, I recommend you do so (jacque@...).  We added new panels for our local soldiers and the volunteers that made them got so attached to the soldier's in doing the research and making the panel.

Hi Pinks,
Forwarding Pierce's notes from yesterday's Peace Forum meeting. I cancelled
out at the last minute and did not attend, but, lo and behold, the outside of my
mobile home is almost finished painted now - whew! what a job. Please mark your
calendar for the events mentioned below and hope you can show up!
I plan to attend the Melrose sign-waving tomorrow between 5 and 6 p.m. Can
you make it? One of the most important things you can do for peace is SHOW UP
for peace events whenever you can. Thanks for all you do for peace....
Your pink pal,
jacque

Greetings All:

Our NEW SCHEDULE is from 4:00pm to 6:30pm, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at
Archer Rd. and 34th St., every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Univ. Av. and 13th St.

The tide has turned in our favor. Cindy Sheehan's moral authority in
galvanizing antiwar sentiments from all walks of life is testimonial to this
fact. The Bushites' criminal callousness in the handling of hurricane
Katrina before and after its landing has further opened the eyes of millions
of folks. Opinion poll after opinion poll have shown overwhelming majority
of the American people wanted troops out of Iraq NOW, yet Bushites and their
cohorts persist in carrying on with their immoral and illegal war.

Recent revelations on the Bushites' egregious disregard for the rule of law
manifested in, to name just a few, illegal spying, kidnapping, authorization
for torture, Abramoff scandal, etc. has only added insult to injury. Further
more, according to a report by Seymour Hersh, these depraved minds are
moving forward with a mad plan for a nuclear attack on Iran.

Also the Bush regime not only pays the bills for the Israeli war machine,
but also gives it the green light to intensify its war on the Palestinians
and Lebanese, rushes an emergency supply of fuel and precision-guided bombs
to enhance the Israeli killing and wrecking spree, while at the same time
blocks all international peace initiatives. And it is using the
Israeli-created humanitarian crisis as a dress rehearsal and a pretext for
attacks on Syria and Iran.

As the approval rating of the Bush regime plummets, its key figures are
stepping up their efforts in fear- and hate-mongering, pressuring Congress
to retroactively legalize torture, warrantless wiretapping and making
changes to War Crimes Act to retroactively protect regime elements from war
crimes prosecution.

With the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which permits
warrantless incarceration and torture of suspected terrorists, an American
police state is fast taking shape. As if the Bush regime has not usurped
sufficient dictatorial power, Frank Morales pointed out that "Public Law
109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122),
which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a
private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public
emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of
state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or
local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder.""

The Bush regime's condemnation of North Korea stinks of cant and hypocrisy.
All that the North Korea wanted from the US is a peace/nonaggresion treaty,
instead the Bush regime unilaterally abrogated the Agreed Framework
agreement between the Clinton administration and North Korea, recklessly
threatens North Korea by calling it part of the Axis-of-evil, etc. Thus
forcing North Korea to accelerate its development of a nuclear deterrence
capability while maintaining its willingness to negotiate with the US and
making Korea peninsula a nuclear weapons free zone.

According to the October 11th Lancet Journal Report: Bush's illegal and
immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq has caused 655,000 excess Iraqi
deaths over and above the base line annual mortality due to 12 years of
sanctions. We are not even talking about the number of Iraqis injured,
maimed, become sick due to lack of medicine or health care provider, with
broken up families, forced to flee their homes and country, etc.

In this mid-term election the electorates have delivered a resounding
rejection of the Bush agenda. Although the Dems who took over the leadership
of both chambers of Congress have wasted no time to dampen expectations.
However, more favorable political space have been opened up to restore the
Bill of Rights, roll back the police state and militarism, dump the Military
Commissions Act, repeal the Patriot Act, end the illegal and immoral
occupations, bring the troops home to save Iraqi, Afghani and American lives
as well as the environment, etc.

Just as Bush used the phony excuse of "fighting terrorism" to invade and
occupy Iraq, he is using the same excuse to justify support for the invasion
of Somalia by Ethiopia, as well as the killing of a large number of Somali
civilians by the US military. Contrary to heeding the voice of the people to
end the occupation and bring the troops home now, the Bush regime decided on
a troop surge to escalate the killing, aiming at turning sections of Baghdad
into another Fallujah to clear the way for the passage of the hydrocarbon
privatization laws by their Iraqi puppets. Simultaneously, this reckless
regime is intensifying its disinformation campaign on Iran to brainwash the
American people while heightening the military threat of imminent attack
against Iran.

Here's another ongoing outrage; the Bush regime is responding to the scandal
over the neglect of wounded troops with scapegoat, retaliation and cover-up
while continuing in sending more troops as executioner as well as cannon
fodder to wars of aggression and occupation based on lies and motivated by
war-profiteering, control of hydrocarbon resources and geo-strategic
advantage. And not just the Bush regime and the Repubs but also many Dems
are justifying support for these wars in the name of "Support Our Troops".
I.e. "Support the Troops" is the reason why the troops have to be sent into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation. In other
words, the warmongers' twisted logic says if we don't send the troops into
harms way to participate in wars of aggression and occupation, then we are
not supporting our troops.

Join us tomorrow at 34th St. and Archer Rd. We are always in need of folks
to join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:30pm. Bring your own
signs or use ours - we have lots of them.

Peace. Ku

Dear ellen,
Last month, with your continuing efforts, Peace Action lobbied The House Energy and Water Appropriations Subcommittee to completely cut funding for Bombplex 2030 and the Reliable Replacement Warhead (RRW). But there is still work to be done.
Tell Congress you oppose further funding for nuclear weaponry.
We expect a full appropriations committee vote on the bill Wednesday, June 6th.  Find out if your Congressperson is on this vital committee - click here to contact them TODAY.
The full House floor vote is expected on June 13th. The Bush administration is lobbying hard to fund development of these new nuclear weapons - tell your representative you won’t pay for more nuclear bombs.
We need an unambiguous victory in the House to strengthen our hand with the Senators who expect to vote on funding by mid-June.
Peace Action and our allies are working put an end to the production of nuclear weapons in the U.S.   With your help we can continue to mobilize grass-roots efforts when the proposal hits the Senate floor.  Click here to help us prepare for the Senate.
For the past 50 years Peace Action has been mobilizing the nation to fight for a more peaceful, nuclear free, world.   Your action today helps us continue our legacy of working toward a nuclear free world.  We’d like to extend our thanks to you for your continued support of our mission.

Sincerely,
Kevin M. Martin

Hi Ellen and the Melrose Peace Women,
I've had to work the last few Mondays with my tutoring business and I have, to my amazement, finished painting the outside of my home...whew!  So, before I take off for vacation I hope to see you on the corner, praying, signing, chanting, waving, hoping and wishing for peace tomorrow, Monday, from 5-6 in Melrose.
Your pal for peace,
Jacque Betz

Join us.  We need your presence, your energy, your voice.

MARCH OF COMPASSION FOR TENT CITY

On Monday, July 23 at 12 noon Rev. Milford Griner, President of the
Alachua
County
Ministerial Alliance, will
be leading a March of Compassion along the sidewalk from Lynch Park to
City
Hall, followed by a rally in front
of City Hall.  The entire community, including the tent dwellers, are
invited to participate.  Sign painting
is encouraged.  Rev. Griner did lead one march where someone brought a
sign
with the New York Salute
painted on it.  He has asked that all signs be G-rated.  There are many
wonderful Bible verses that can be
used,  as well as messges from our own hearts.  Rev. Griner will be
sending
out a press release on this
nearer to the day, but I'm letting you know so you can pencil it into
your
schedules.

LOSE - LOSE - LOSE - LOSE...

There is an old saying among theater folks that 'no one is a bad guy to
themselves.'  No one gets out of
bed in the morning with an intent to see how much harm they can do.
This
is important to actors, because
you can't play any role effectively, even that of a bad guy, unless you
have genuine sympathy and affection
for the character you are portraying.   Actors prepare for roles by
getting
into the skin of their character,
feeling the vulnerabilities, fears and dreams of that person.  Using
that
exercise, I considered the eviction
of tent city from many different points of view:

1.  I am Lucy Brown, a 78-year-old woman who  has lived in the same
pleasant neighborhood, surrounded by
woods, for many years.  I know nothing about homeless people except
what I
read in the news, i.e.,
that they are addicts, criminals and bums.  Tent City has been evicted
and
now homeless people are
sleeping in the woods behind my  house.  I am terrified.  Every night I
expect homeless criminals to
break into my house and beat me to death.

2.  I am Joe Taxpayer, Republican and proud of it.  I hate taxes, and I
especially don't like my tax dollars
being spent on a bunch of homeless bums.  I work hard for what I have,
so
why don't they do the same?
Tent City  has been evicted and scores of homeless people are walking
the
streets, getting arrested,
ending up in the ER (due to the health implications - mental and
physical -
of losing the only home and
stability they had).  Now many more tens of thousands of my tax dollars
are
being spent on unsheltered
homeless people.

3.  I am Fred and Ethel Mertz.  We sunk our life savings into a small
bakery, and we're scratching out a
living at it.  Now homeless people, evicted from Tent City, are using
the
alley by our shop as a latrine.

4.  I am Kevin.  I was living in Tent City.  I had a job at MacDonald's
and
was saving up money to get
into a place, but now I have no place to store my clothes and clean
up.  I've lost my job.  I spend my
days sitting in the downtown plaza playing cards.

etc. etc.  This alleged solution to the problem of Tent City is
lose/lose/lose.  I couldn't come up with
a single winner.

THANK YOU...

Books, games and personal hygiene products are starting to arrive
here.  The brothers and sisters in the
woods want you to know how very much they appreciate what you do for
them.

love, arupa
