Hi,
Message forwarded through PDA, Luis Cuevas.   sorry if it is a duplicate - hope to see you in the pink!

Stop the Bushwacking

Meet at Westside Park, hold up signs on the corner of 34th St and 8th Avenue, busy intersection. Take turns holding up signs on each of the 4 corners, and talking at the picnic tables about further action.

Just a reminder for peace folks to join Emmanuel Mennonite Church, Vets for Peace & others on Mon, Jan 15 for the annual ML King gathering & march. The Program is at Noon on the Downtown Plaza. The March, from Downtown to the MLK Center, begins at 1pm. Activities at the MLK Center will eventually move into a gospel program. But go inside for the beginning speeches by local & state officials! Some of it can be lame but some speakers are quite powerful in their call for justice, condemnation of Washington, etc. Should be interesting with Dems now in power & hugh numbers rejecting the Bush plan to see what is said. I always stay for this part & never regret it. Miriam

TO: The Friends of Susan B. Anthony (FoSBA)

From: the Coordinator of FoSBA, June Littler

You are receiving this email by virtue of the fact that we have received most of your addresses from your registration at the last FoSBA meeting on Aug. 26, 2006, where Doris "Granny D" was our speaker and Doris Bardon received our award. You may have had guests on your registration slip who also have email addresses, which we did not get, so please forward this message as far and wide as you want to.

On Wed., Jan. 24, 2007, there will be a ten mile walk in honor of Doris "Granny D" Haddock's 97th birthday and as a tribute to her 10 mile a day walk across the United States in 1999-2000 for 14 months to bring attention to Campaign Finance Reform. Walking supporters will gather at the Westside Recreation Center, 1001 NW 34th St., in the parking lot before 10 a.m. and walk to the Gainesville Downtown Plaza, arriving about noon to meet up with other supporters for a bring-your-own brown bag lunch. (If you park in the parking garage off SW 3rd St. and 1st Ave. you can count that as part of YOUR walk.) After a few explanatory remarks about the walk Vivian Filer will read the Declaration of Independence, as Granny D did another time at the Capitol in Washington, D.C. From there the walkers will continue west, through the UF Campus to the Reitz Union, to the Law School, south on Village Drive to Radio Rd. and then west to 34th St. before ending up at the point of origin. (There may be a slight jog in the road to the fire station west of 34th St. to fill out the mileage.) You may join us at any point and leave anytime (cell phones are so handy to ask the family taxi to pick you up). We will be on the sidewalk all the way.

There are a few more t-shirts that are available for $10, in sizes Med., Large, and X-Large. Please let me know by Monday night which ones you want. They are gold with black letters. On the back is "Campaign Finance Reform" and on the front is: "Granny D, Tribute Trek, Gainesville, Florida, 10 miles / 1 day, for her 97th birthday, 24 January 2007"

The actual flag that she carried, "Campaign Finance Reform" is on loan from her and will be displayed at the Downtown Plaza when the walkers arrive.

For more information on clean elections and campaign finance reform see http://www.fcan.org/Clean_money/cleanmoney.htm or follow the links from www.grannyd.com. Those interested in campaign finance reform are welcome to join in the walk or meet at the plaza at noon.

Call 352-371-6944 for more information on the walk.

Hi Pinks,
I attended the Peace Forum Saturday, 1/13, and below find a summary of
upcoming actions based on the meeting. Please, please, mark your calendar!
Tomorrow, Monday, will be the MLK Day parade - CodePINK will have a pink banner
so please please show up and, if possible, wear pink and let's walk with the
peace contingency. I get so lonely when none of my pink peace pals are around.
Last year there was two of us - can we at least try for three people this year?
Meet at the Downtown Community Plaza at noon, look for the pink banner that
says:
OUR LIVES BEGIN TO END WHEN WE BECOME SILENT ABOUT THINGS THAT MATTER-MLK
If you need a ride or want to carpool, call me at 468-2101.

Howdy Pinks,
There were about 1,500 people at the MLK march today in Gainesville, Fl.  Perhaps a hundred or more folks and great energy from our little peace community.  Thanks to all who SHOWED UP.  The most important thing you can do for peace is to please show up.  Below is a great little quote of the Dali Lama I received from Jerilyn:

Never give up,
No matter what is going on,
Never give up,
Develop the heart,
Too much energy in your country is spent developing the mind,
instead of the heart.
Be compassionate,
not just to your friends but to everyone.
Be compassionate, work for peace
in your heart and in the world.
Work for Peace,
and I say again,
Never give up,
no matter what is happening,
no matter what is going on around you,
Never give up.

Greetings All:

Our Winter schedule is from 4:00 pm to dark, every 1st and 3rd Tuesday at
Archer Rd. and 34th St., every 2nd and 4th Tuesday at Univ. Av. and 13th St.

The tide has turned in our favor. Cindy Sheehan's moral authority in
galvanizing antiwar sentiments from all walks of life is testimonial to this
fact. The Bushites' criminal callousness in the handling of hurricane
Katrina before and after its landing has further opened the eyes of millions
of folks. Opinion poll after opinion poll have shown overwhelming majority
of the American people wanted troops out of Iraq NOW, yet Bushites and their
cohorts persist in carrying on with their immoral and illegal war.

Recent revelations on the Bushites' egregious disregard for the rule of law
manifested in, to name just a few, illegal spying, kidnapping, authorization
for torture, Abramoff scandal, etc. has only added insult to injury. Further
more, according to a report by Seymour Hersh, these depraved minds are
moving forward with a mad plan for a nuclear attack on Iran.

Also the Bush regime not only pays the bills for the Israeli war machine,
but also gives it the green light to intensify its war on the Palestinians
and Lebanese, rushes an emergency supply of fuel and precision-guided bombs
to enhance the Israeli killing and wrecking spree, while at the same time
blocks all international peace initiatives. And it is using the
Israeli-created humanitarian crisis as a dress rehearsal and a pretext for
attacks on Syria and Iran.

As the approval rating of the Bush regime plummets, its key figures are
stepping up their efforts in fear- and hate-mongering, pressuring Congress
to retroactively legalize torture, warrantless wiretapping and making
changes to War Crimes Act to retroactively protect regime elements from war
crimes prosecution.

With the passage of the Military Commissions Act of 2006, which permits
warrantless incarceration and torture of suspected terrorists, an American
police state is fast taking shape. As if the Bush regime has not usurped
sufficient dictatorial power, Frank Morales pointed out that "Public Law
109-364, or the "John Warner Defense Authorization Act of 2007" (H.R.5122),
which was signed by the commander in chief on October 17th, 2006, in a
private Oval Office ceremony, allows the President to declare a "public
emergency" and station troops anywhere in America and take control of
state-based National Guard units without the consent of the governor or
local authorities, in order to "suppress public disorder.""

The Bush regime's condemnation of North Korea stinks of cant and hypocrisy.
All that the North Korea wanted from the US is a peace/nonaggresion treaty,
instead the Bush regime unilaterally abrogated the Agreed Framework
agreement between the Clinton administration and North Korea, recklessly
threatens North Korea by calling it part of the Axis-of-evil, etc. Thus
forcing North Korea to accelerate its development of a nuclear deterrence
capability while maintaining its willingness to negotiate with the US and
making Korea peninsula a nuclear weapons free zone.

According to the October 11th Lancet Journal Report: Bush's illegal and
immoral invasion and occupation of Iraq has caused 655,000 excess Iraqi
deaths over and above the base line annual mortality due to 12 years of
sanctions. We are not even talking about the number of Iraqis injured,
maimed, become sick due to lack of medicine or health care provider, with
broken up families, forced to flee their homes and country, etc.

In this mid-term election the electorates have delivered a resounding
rejection of the Bush agenda. Although the Dems who took over the leadership
of both chambers of Congress have wasted no time to dampen expectations.
However, more favorable political space have been opened up to restore the
Bill of Rights, roll back the police state and militarism, dump the Military
Commissions Act, repeal the Patriot Act, end the illegal and immoral
occupations, bring the troops home to save Iraqi, Afghani and American lives
as well as the environment, etc.

Just as Bush used the phony excuse of "fighting terrorism" to invade and
occupy Iraq, he is using the same excuse to justify support for the invasion
of Somalia by Ethiopia, as well as the killing of a large number of Somali
civilians by the US military. Contrary to heeding the voice of the people to
end the occupation and bring the troops home now, the Bush regime decided on
a troop surge to escalate the killing, aiming at turning sections of Baghdad
and Sadr City into another Fallujah to clear the way for the passage of the
hydrocarbon privatization laws by their Iraqi puppets

Join us tomorrow at 34th St. and Archer Rd. We are always in need of folks
to join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:00pm. Bring your own
signs or use ours - we have lots of them.

Peace. Ku

Hi Bridget,
Terrific!  There will be pens and paper, Mandate for Peace postcards provided at the booth as well as other details.  I've gotten a few responses to volunteer.  I'm still waiting to hear from other women who can help that day at the Holistic Fair, at a booth at the Air Potato Roundup, during lunchtime at Satchel's, outside of Maude's/Starbucks, Bageland at Thornebrook, Second St. Bakery...
I had a short spot of AM850 radio today regarding our goal of 1,000 letters on January 27.  You can also ask friends to write letters ahead of time and give them to you to help achieve our goal of 1,000 that day.
Thanks.  I'll give you a call over the weekend to firm up the plans.

Will I get to meet you that day?
Do you have a "script" for me to get me going on doing this?  Or can you suggest one?  We'll talk about it.  I have a terror of public speaking but once I get a feel for what I'm doing, I'll be good.  I'm a member at UCG, too, so I'll know people there.

Solutions to Violence :

An Ongoing Dialogue

Sponsored by

The Gainesville Interfaith Peace Center

Because of the positive response to the 12 discussions held in 2006, the “Solutions to Violence” series will continue in the new year. As before, the selections for discussion will come from the anthology Solutions to Violence, edited by Colman McCarthy and published by The Center for Teaching Peace.

The dates and topics are as follows:

Feb 10:  Is Human Nature Inherently Violent?

Feb. 24: Axioms of Nonviolence

March 10: Animal Rights and the Ethics of Nonviolent Eating

March 24:  What’s Love Got to Do with It?

April 14: Nonviolent Response to Assault

April 28:  The Peace Corps Revisited

Each conversation will focus first on an assigned text (which may be read in the 10-15 minutes before the discussion begins) and then on continuing application, that is, on how we can promote dialogue about peace in our community.

Don Smith will continue to serve as moderator. Don
is a Senior Trainer for the Great Books Foundation and belongs to both the Gainesville Friends Meeting and the Gainesville Interfaith Peace Center.

Hey all here is some footage from our Wickford Rally that a member
has and placed on youtube. RIPDA will start documenting most if not
all our events to place on this sight.

Bob is a Professional media person and will be following our trip to
DC on the 27th. After if PDA would like he can produce a DVD and
provide copies. He can also produce future DVD's for PDA at a decent
price as long as he doesn't have to travel special. WE are paying for
his trip and expenses to get this covered which in the end I think
can be a Big boost for PDA.

As you will see it's apparent I need a bit more sleep from my face,
Bob arrived just after the event as did one other local TV News
station but still did get some good coverage.

Please forward this widely and have all the progressives you know add
this to their favaites or subscribe to this from youtube. We plan on
covering as many of PDA's and other progressive groups as possible
including the Iraq War. Our idea is to eventually turn this into a
progressive ne3ws channel so please check in often. If you have any
activism videos please contact Bob.

Peace to all and keep up the fight! Progressives will win the War!

Commissions Act, repeal the Patriot Act, end the illegal and immoral
occupations, end war-profiteering, bring the troops home to save Iraqi,
Afghani and American lives as well as the environment, etc.

Just as Bush used the phony excuse of "fighting terrorism" to invade and
occupy Iraq, he is using the same excuse to justify support for the invasion
of Somalia by Ethiopia, as well as the killing of a large number of Somali
civilians by the US military. Contrary to heeding the voice of the people to
end the occupation and bring the troops home now, the Bush regime decided on
a troop surge to escalate the killing, aiming at turning sections of Baghdad
into another Fallujah to clear the way for the passage of the hydrocarbon
privatization laws by their Iraqi puppets

Join us tomorrow at 13th St. and Univ. Av. We are always in need of folks to
join us for any length of time between 4:00pm and 6:00pm. Bring your own
signs or use ours - we have lots of them.

Peace. Ku

Howdy Pinks,
A message was sent last week regarding the Granny D walk happening tomorrow, starting at Westwood Park at 10 a.m. and arriving downtown at noon  See details below.  I will be walking and, hopefully, getting the Mandate for Peace pink postcards signed!  I'll be at the Downtown Community Plaza from 12-1 also and have the Mandate for Peace post cards so people can sign them.  Maybe I'll see you there?

(Forgive any duplications.)

All is set for Wednesday's Tribute Trek for Granny D (and Campaign
Finance Reform).

Those of you who are walking meet at the Westside Recreation Center
parking lot about 9:45 a.m. If we leave at 10 a.m. we will get to the
Downtown Plaza (3.7 mi.) before 12 noon without any trouble; we need to
set off by 10:15 at the latest (that's still at the rate of 1 mile in
30 minutes - some of us can do it in 20 minutes). Don't forget your
lunch and water bottle. I have about 8 people that I am expecting to
walk for sure. Let me know who else to add. I'll set aside a t-shirt
for you (@$10) so you can wear it during the walk. Any leftovers will
be sold at the Plaza after we get there. -- And if there is someone who
reads this who is willing to take over the t-shirt concession when we
get there to sell the last (maybe 13) t-shirts for us, let me know.

Our permit is for 12-1 p.m. at the Downtown Plaza, so we'll try not to
arrive early. The walkers will want to take a breather and eat lunch -
at least _I_ will. So you supporters, bring your brown bag lunches and
eat with us. There will be a few remarks at some point to explain what
we are doing and why. We'll also show you the actual "Campaign Finance
Reform" flag that Granny D carried in her cross country trek and that
she loaned us for this special occasion.

This is also a reminder that Wed. is her 97th birthday and she will be
honored that day in the New Hampshire legislature. Vivian Filer will
give us a shot in the arm with her reading of the "Declaration of
Independence" before we take off going west toward UF. If you park in
the garage on SW 3rd St. you can walk back there with us if you can't
go all the way to UF or farther with the main contingent of walkers.

Don't forget to check http://www.grannyd.com  - "Clean Elections" and
other links from there. Know what we're walking for.

Bring/send your friends, neighbors - pass the word far and wide - there
is only a 20% chance of rain (so far).

Thanks a bunch!

"TROOPS OUT NOW" TO BE MESSAGE OF SATURDAY JAN. 27 'PEACE SURGE" ACTIONS IN GAINESVILLE

Alachua County Greens will join other peace activists on the streets of Gainesville on Saturday January 27, calling for the withdrawal of U.S. troops from Iraq and an end to the U.S. military occupation. Local actions are being organized around the state and nationwide, in solidarity with the national United for Peace and Justice actions taking place in Washington, DC.

2:00 pm:  Greens will join with Veterans for Peace, CCAWT (Community Coalition Against War & Terrorism), Progressive Democrats and others for a sign waving rally at the intersection of Archer Road & SW 34th Street in Gainesville, starting at 2 pm.
5:00 pm:
Greens will join with Veterans for Peace, CCAWT (Community Coalition Against War & Terrorism), Progressive Democrats and others for a Rally for Peace at the new courthouse at 235 South Main Street between S. 2nd & 3rd Avenues at 5 pm.

All day:  Jacque Betz ( jacquebetz@... ) and Code Pink are organizing a letter-writing campaign in various locations.

Over 3,000 U.S. troops have now been killed in Iraq. Tens of thousands have been seriously injured. More than 600,000 Iraqis have died as a result of this intervention. Iraq'a ancient cities have been destroyed and their country devastated. Over 2 million Iraqis have fled their country to escape the genocidal conditions brought on by the war and occupation. The U.S. government has spent more than $300 billion to prosecute this illegal and immoral campaign. Only Congress can put an end to this war, but Congress has shown that it will not act with conviction and determination unless confronted by an active and vocal citizenry.

Greens support the closing of U.S. military bases in Iraq, a cutoff of funding for the war, and the immediate withdrawal of U.S. troops.
Lasting peace will only result from a political and diplomatic solution to the sectarian violence, and that cannot occur under U.S. military occupation. The occupation of Iraq cannot serve to prevent violence because the occupation is in fact a primary catalyst for more violence. Even Iraqis who despised Saddam Hussein are joining the resistance, and their fight against the occupiers will continue until the occupiers leave. A democratic society will never be built on the foundation of a military occupation.

The prosecutors of this illegal war have hijacked our nation and robbed every citizen of this country of funds that are needed for health care, education, transportation infrastructure, and development of renewable energy technologies. Instead, our tax dollars are being funneled to arms merchants and war profiteers. The rich receive massive tax breaks while budget deficits mount and an astronomical debt is accumulated for future generations to pay.

The Green Party supports an immediate end to the war and occupation in Iraq, and an investigation and impeachment of George W. Bush and Dick Cheney for high crimes and misdemeanors.

U.S. OUT OF IRAQ!
BRING THE TROOPS HOME!
INVESTIGATION AND IMPEACHMENT NOW!

Dear CodePINKgainesville,
We have 56 people signed onto this yahoo group but only two people volunteered to help out last Saturday Jan. 27 for a letter-writing campaign and tables.
CodePINK has an opportunity to set up a table at the Vagina Monologues coming up Feb 18, 23, 24, 25.  See below.  I need to hear from you this week if you are able to volunteer to help -- sit at a table for a couple of hours.  Is anyone out there reading this?  Does anyone want to volunteer?  Please respond and let me know this week because I am ready to cancel if I don't get some help. - Jacque 468-2101 jacque@... or jacquebetz@...

Katie -  I'll let you know by Friday, February 2 if anyone actually volunteers to help.  Honestly, I doubt anyone steps up from my list of 56 women -- I am so very tired of begging women to give a couple hours of their time once in a while and no one stepping up.  We have a lot of pretenders -- they eat the "right" whole foods, wear the "cool" clothes and think they are "activists" because they maybe attend the yearly Solstice Concert.  It is disheartening.  I am the national coordinator of the Peace Ribbon Project and work on a national level with that (the Ribbon is currently in Hawaii).  But, locally, women say they support CodePINK but I still haven't figured out just how they support it -- they never show up for anything. I'll let you know if anyone volunteers by Friday Feb 2.

Hi Jacque,

Sorry I dropped the ball on the Iquana thing, I was out of town for work from Jan 9 - 19 =( .

Our concert lineup has changed slightly... we have Hamhock and Slide, Flash Silvermoon, Marce and redboy. Show will begin at 6:30 on Feb 18 at The Side Bar. Tickets are $10 at the door and include a coupon for $2.00 off a ticket to see The Vagina Monologues!

The Vagina Monologues are Feb 23, 24, 25 at the Facilties of the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship. Box office opens at 7, doors at 7:30, show starts at 8. Tickets are $10 at the door.

CodePINK represenatives that will be "working" each evening need not pay admission.

I've copied Melissa Koerner on this e-mail, she is handling our PR and Marketing. Could you send her a logo and some verbage to include on the promo material?

 Thanks!

Katie
