FADP Update

Friends,

Gov. Rick Scott has ordered Larry Mann to be executed Wednesday, April 10th at 6pm ET. Please contact the governor’s office and ask him to suspend executions to investigate Florida’s mistake-ridden Death Penalty state program that has seen 24 Death Row exonerations – far more than any other state. We have had one exoneration for every three executions. Just two months ago Seth Penalver was freed after 13 years on Death Row.

Governor Rick Scott – Phone 850-488-7146. Rick.Scott@....

Please sign and share the Florida execution moratorium petition. There are not quite 1,000 signatures. The petitioners plan to present this to Gov. Scott and hold a press conference. Many more sign-ons are needed. Please share this petition anywhere, any way, and with anyone you can.

2013 is shaping up to be an absolutely critical year for our movement. While Maryland and other states are busy repealing the Death Penalty, Florida’s governor is busy scheduling executions. Efforts are afoot in the legislature to “speed up” and increase executions despite of the record number of wrongful convictions. There will be intense challenges and new opportunities. We are working VERY hard on both offense and defense and MUST be positioned with the means to beat back these challenges and seize opportunities. FADP is an all-volunteer coalition. We need your help for the basic necessities of an effective campaign. Please help.

“If not us, who?  If not now, when?” – John F. Kennedy.

Shine the light,

---Mark

WILL CORPORATIONS GET THE RIGHT TO VOTE?

The headline reads, “Montana Considers Giving Corporations The Right To
Vote” — laughable if it weren’t true.

Legislator Steve Lavin, a member of American Legislative Exchange Council
(ALEC), introduced the bill, which to the legislature’s credit was quickly
tabled in committee. Even the most uninformed citizen understands that voting is
for people, not corporations.

Wait a minute, following this attempt to endow more rights to corporations by
giving them the vote, the Supreme Court heard arguments to weaken key
provisions of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). After a number of states passed
ALEC-sponsored Voter ID laws last summer, and this latest exploit to undermine
the VRA, it is clear there’s an effort to minimize the power of ‘we the
people’ by limiting our access to the ballot box, while simultaneously
maximizing the power of corporations and businesses by giving them the vote.

Please sign the Motion to Amend petition: http://tinyurl.com/mta-motion-to-amend

It may sound completely wacky, but this is an obvious next step for corporations
because they are legally recognized as people. It’s a good thing that the Move
to Amend Coalition is educating and organizing in communities across the nation.
Only a grassroots movement determined to restore the power of ‘we the
people’ can overcome the money and power behind ALEC.

In order to be effective, we must keep growing our community, which is why we
have set a goal of 500,000 signatures on our Motion to Amend petition by
year’s end, nearly doubling our supporters. It doesn’t matter which side of
the aisle you sit on. Ours is a non-partisan—and winning issue--in red and
blue districts alike. It’s in every person’s best interest!

Please sign the petition!

We want people voting, including those protected by the VRA, and we certainly
don’t want corporations endowed with the right to vote. Help us build a
movement with power enough to reestablish ‘we the people’ as the sovereign
rulers of this great nation. Sign the petition today.

Thanks for taking action, Miriam

Gainesville Citizens for Alternatives to the Death Penalty presents: "West of
Memphis"

When: 7pm Monday, April 15th
Cost: $3-5 suggested donation
Where: Civic Media Center, 433 S Main St

A new documentary written and directed by Academy Award nominated filmmaker,
Amy Berg ("Deliver Us From Evil") and produced by first time filmmakers Damien
Echols and Lorri Davis, in collaboration with the multiple Academy award winning
team of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, "West of Memphis" tells the untold story
behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light; a fight
to stop the State of Arkansas from killing an innocent man.

Starting with a searing examination of the police investigation into the 1993
murders of three, eight year old boys, Christopher Byers, Steven Branch, and
Michael Moore, in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, the film goes on to
uncover new evidence surrounding the arrest and conviction of the other three
victims of this shocking crime- Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie
Misskelley. All three were teenagers when they became the target of the police
investigation; all three went on to lost 18 years of their lives-imprisoned for
cimes they did not commit.

How the documentary came to be, is in itself a key part of the story of how
Damien Echols' fight to save his own life. The film reveals how close he, his
wife Lorri Davis, along with his legal team, friends and supporters, came to
losing that battle. But as Echols, who spent eighteen years on death row,
himself has stated "... in the face of such horror, in the face of resounding
grief and pain, you cannot give up … you must never give up."

A Victory for Transparency!

Exciting news!

After persistent effort, SOA Watch has won its lawsuit against the Pentagon for its refusal to disclose the names of graduates and instructors of WHINSEC (formerly known as the SOA). Yesterday, Judge Phyllis J. Hamilton of California's Northern District Court, ruled that the Pentagon and SOA/WHINSEC had no grounds for secrecy when it comes to who is being trained at the multi-million dollar facility.

Read the press release here.

Up until 2004, SOA Watch requests for the names of SOA/WHINSEC attendees were granted, but following a report showing several human rights abusers were training and teaching at the "new school" (WHINSEC), the Pentagon decided to classify the names. In 2010, though the Obama administration tried to claim that its continued secrecy around the SOA/WHINSEC was in the "national interest", our grassroots movement pushed back.

Now: Contact your Member of Congress to let them know on which side of history they should stand.

As social movements in Latin America push back against against impunity, the historical records reflect the high degree of involvement of SOA graduates in the crimes of the past. Right now, in countries like Honduras and Mexico, death squads linked to the police and military are attacking social movements. It took years for activists and researchers to finally establish ties between SOA graduates and criminal activity during the civil wars in Central America. Our victory today is a victory for generations to come.

Pending a possible appeal by the Pentagon, we are looking for skilled researchers to help us sift through the thousands of names from nearly a decade of secrecy. If you are interested in helping, contact nico@....

And remember: our beautiful struggle for justice cannot continue without all of our support. Donate today to ensure that we will continue summing all our efforts against empire!

To the Pentagon: You're a square!

Venceremos!

Two Leaders of Honduran Campesino Organizations Murdered in the Aguan

On April 13th, the body of Julián Hernández (president of campesino organization MARCA - Authentic Movement for the Re-vindication of Aguán Peasants) was found murdered in Trujillo. Following the murder of MARCA's lawyer Antonio Trejo last fall, this murder is interpreted as sign of more death squad terror to come.

Then, on April 21, the general secretary of the National Association of Campesinos of Honduras (ANACH), Alfonso Bonilla, was murdered by assassins in his home.

These assassinations and death squad activity continue to occur in the Aguan amidst the heavy militarization of the area by troops and police of Operation Xatruch III, led by SOA graduate Germán Alfaro Escalante. Over 80 campesinos have been killed in the Aguan since the SOA graduate-led coup in 2009.

Contrary to what is often suggested in the press, the violence is not just random or drug- or gang-related; some of the most vulnerable sectors in society are frequent targets — those whose rights the US Department of State tells us it considers to be a high priority — women, the LGBT community, journalists, opposition party politicians and Hondurans who opposed the coup.

innocents like Juan will surely die before the truth is known. Even if you
support the death penalty you should not be in favor of this bill. Sometimes it
takes awhile for the truth to be discovered. Accuracy should be our goal. This

Please sign and share the VETO PETITION TO GOV. SCOTT. Juan Melendez has started a petition asking Gov. Scott to veto the Timely Justice Act. Juan knows the danger of this new law. Juan spent almost 18 years on Florida’s Death Row before “lost” evidence of his innocence was presented in court. He was exonerated and freed. As Juan says, “You can’t free an innocent man from the grave.” Please sign Juan’s petition to Gov. Scott ASAP and ask others to do the same.

Good afternoon,

In anticipation of the Citys planned purchase and conversion of the old correctional institution into Gainesville Community Innovation (GCI), the City of Gainesville/Alachua County Office on Homelessness is conducting an Alachua County Community Needs Survey. Since service offerings at GCI will not be limited to homeless services, but rather, will look at what the community as a whole needs and wants, we are hoping to have this survey shared far and wide to as many different parts of the County, and into as many different communities, as possible. To that end, we are seeking your assistance in helping us get word about the survey out.

Please share the survey link with EVERYONE you know, whether with client and coworkers, at your house of worship, where you play, where you study, and with your family, friends and neighbors. Dont forget to complete it yourself. We will leave the link live for the next two weeks so there is time for as many people as possible to respond.  If the link does not work, please just copy and paste it into your browser.

Because we are really trying to get the word out, you may receive this e-mail more than one time. For that, I apologize in advance.

Once the survey results are in, we will gladly share our findings.

Hi everyone,

We are so close! Florida's so-called "Timely Justice Act," which speeds up executions, garnered national attention last week thanks to everyone who has spoken out against it. The New York Times ran a powerful editorial urging Governor Scott to veto the bill and the Huffington Post published my op ed, highlighting my own story of spending 18 years on Floridas death row fighting for my innocence.

The best part Governor Scott is ASKING to hear from Floridians. He wants to know how you feel about this harmful and misguided legislation!

Email Governor Scott today and let him know that the Timely Justice Act will only put more innocent lives at risk.

This is personal to me. If this Act had been in place when I was on death row, the state of Florida may have executed me and I wouldnt be here today to help protect the innocent and work for a more justice society.

This is our last chance to tell Governor Scott to veto this bill, and he wants to hear from us. He knows this is a difficult decision, lets be there to help him make it.

Join me in emailing the Governor today!

Onward to Justice!

As you are probably aware, we are working the City of Gainesville/Alachua County Office on Homeless in conducting a community-wide needs survey. The survey was scheduled to end yesterday, but based on feedback received from various people, we are extending the date through which you can participate through the end of this week (midnight Saturday, May 25th.)

A few people expressed confusion about the layout of the survey. When you begin, you'll be asked to select from a list of broad topics. You can only select one, but you will be brought back to this page to select again once you finish the first round of questions. When you are finished selecting from the broad topics, then choose the last option on the page and it will move you ahead in the survey.

We are asking EVERYONE to take the survey even if you think you don't have any specific needs. And remember, the survey asks "do you, your family or neighbors" have these needs so you may be answering on behalf of someone else.

Here is the  link to the survey:  http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/AlachuaNeedsSurvey

Please feel free to share it widely.

Thanks,
