Dear Fellow Voter,

Will they hack the presidential election? According to this week's Christian Science Monitor, "if someone could get a few minutes’ unattended access to a paperless machine, that person could install a software virus that could spread to other machines and switch those machines’ votes before deleting all traces of itself."

Be prepared. Act now in three important steps:
  1. Sign the  Pledge of Action and forward it to everyone you know.
  2. Donate to our Rapid Response Fund.
  3. Organize a  Voter Assembly in your community for Nov 7th, the day after the election.
With the clock ticking, every hour brings new reports of serious voting rights violations.

From Ohio, today, came the news that experimental software patches were installed on vote counting tabulators in up to 39 Ohio counties.  The Free Press has found that an elections corporation, Election Systems and Solutions (ES&S), installed software patches that will impact 4,041,056 registered voters, including those in metropolitan Columbus and Cleveland. This software install violates Ohio law because this software has never been tested by public authorities. And this, just 5 days before Election Day.

People in Florida, Virginia and Indiana have gotten calls falsely telling them they can vote early by phone and don't need to go to a polling place. In suburban Broward County, Fla., a handful of elderly voters who requested absentee ballots say they were visited by unknown people claiming to be authorized to collect the ballots.
Support free elections
In 2004, we organized the first No Stolen Elections! campaign and launched the Ohio Recount. In 2008, 2011, and 2012, our No More Stolen Elections! efforts have exposed fraud, forced recounts, and built momentum for hand-counted paper ballots and other essential reforms. But we can't afford to rest now. We need the resources to keep moving forward. We must be ready on Election Day.  Please give now.

Two stolen presidential elections is two too many. The only thing that could be more true than that is that a third presidential election is being manipulated right now.

Remember:
  1. Sign the  Pledge of Action and forward it to everyone you know.
  2. Donate to our Rapid Response Fund.
  3. Organize a  Voter Assembly in your community for Nov 7th, the day after the election.
Yours for Democracy,

"THE ACTIVISTS: War, Peace, and Politics in the Streets"- http://vimeo.com/49732898

Description:

This documentary film examines activism in the anti-war movement in the United States after 9/11. Through the lens of several well-known activists and dynamic organizations, it investigates varieties of activism, as well as the personal experiences that bring people together to create a movement. It paints a complex and intimate portrait of the world of activism.

The film was shot between June, 2008 and March, 2010 in New York, Denver, Atlanta, Chicago, Minneapolis-St. Paul, Tempe, AZ, Elgin, IL, and Washington, DC. It was created by Melody Weinstein, Michael T. Heaney, and Marco Roldán.

What does it mean to stand up for what one believes in?

Making one's self heard in today's ideologically-charged world is a courageous act. Those who express their opinions on controversial issues – especially when they do so defiantly, outwardly, and publicly – put their lives as they know them at risk. These individuals continually renew the essence of free speech by setting aside social acceptance and, at times, personal safety, to speak truth to power.

These people are known as activists. This film is a story of their lives.

For more information about this film, contact Michael T. Heaney at mheaney@... or 202-236-3369.

Move to Amend Wins Big at the Ballot Box: Americans Fed Up with Big Money and Undue Corporate Influence

From Massachusetts to Oregon, Colorado to Illinois and Wisconsin, and Ohio to California, citizens throughout the country voted overwhelmingly Tuesday for their legislators to pass a constitutional amendment to overturn the U.S. Supreme Court’s Citizens United v. Federal Election Commission ruling and declare that only human beings – not corporations – are entitled to constitutional rights and that money is not speech and campaign spending can be regulated.

Residents in over 150 cities had the opportunity to vote on measures calling for an end to the doctrines of corporate constitutional rights and money as free speech, and in every single town the vote was supportive. Often by an overwhelming margin.

In Eau Claire, WI the vote was 71% in favor of a measure stating, "Should the US Constitution be amended to establish that regulating political contributions and spending is not equivalent to limiting freedom of speech, by stating that only human beings, not corporations, unions, or PACs, are entitled to constitutional rights?"

In largely conservative Pueblo, Colorado, where the city newspaper came out against the measure, residents still voted 65% in favor of Move to Amend's resolution, placed on the ballot by County Commissioners. Move to Amend volunteers in Massachusetts collected signatures to place the constitutional amendment question before one third of the population of their state. The "MA Democracy Amendment Question" passed by 79%.

Voters in Mendocino County, CA where volunteers collected signatures to become the first California county to place a Move to Amend citizen's initiative on the ballot, explicitly voted to "stand with the Move to Amend campaign" by a 73% margin. Move to Amend resolutions also passed in several towns in Illinois and Ohio and Oregon, all by similar landslide margins.

Montana voters approved a state-wide resolution by 75%.

Another organization -- Common Cause -- put forward several measures calling for simply overturning Citizens United and granting Congress authority to regulate campaign spending. These measures also passed by a wide margin. In the state of Colorado, the Common Cause measure passed by 64% and in San Francisco approval was 80% and 72% in Richmond, CA. The group's measure in Chicago passed by 74%. Common Cause was also an active member of the MA Democracy Amendment Coalition.

Move to Amend's position is that the Constitutional amendment must go beyond simply overturning Citizens United, "There is no reason for us to shy away from a true and lasting solution, rather than just band-aids," stated Kaitlin Sopoci-Belknap, a member of the Move to Amend National Leadership Team. "In every single community where Americans have had the opportunity to call for a Constitutional amendment to outlaw corporate personhood, they have seized it and voted yes overwhelmingly. Tuesday's results show that the Movement to Amend has nearly universal approval. Americans are fed up with large corporations wielding undue influence over our elections and our legal system. Citizens United is not the cause, it is a symptom and Americans want to see that case overturned not by simply going back to the politics of 2009 before the case, but rather by removing big money and special interests from the process entirely."

Move to Amend is a national coalition of hundreds of organizations and nearly 250,000 people. The organization also boasts over 150 local affiliates across the country. The Resolve to Amend Campaign goal was to have 50 cities vote on the group's resolution.

Dear Friends,

This is the Helping Hands Clinic’s request for matching funds.  They are, IMHO, one of the most effective programs in Gainesville.  Those people who would like to direct their donations for assistance to homeless women can earmark them for Duffy’s Heart Fund, which was established in memory of a young homeless woman who took her own life, and provides special assistance to homeless women.  Thank you so much.

Dear Friends and Supporters,

I am writing on behalf of Helping Hands Clinic to ask for your help once again. Due to the great response to our $15,000 donation-match challenge last year we were able to provide 2,021 clinic visits to 522 different individuals through our Monday and Thursday night medical clinics.   In addition, 586 women attended our Women’s Health Program, with 1695 visits. The women’s program continued to offer a nutritious meal, clothing, showers, hygiene products, and education programs in a safe and supportive environment. The year saw a 19% increase in volunteers joining our efforts.  The monetary value of these volunteers was estimated at $532,242.   We are extremely grateful for both the dedication of our volunteers and the support we have received from you.

We are pleased to announce that once again we have been provided with the support to offer our third donation match challenge.  Our volunteer donor has pledged to match the first $15,000 donated to the Clinic by December 25th. These funds will be used to provide both administrative and clinic support to program operations.  Donations by check can be made to the Helping Hands Clinic and mailed to the:

Helping Hands Clinic

2603 NW 13th St #306

Gainesville, FL  32609

Donations can also be made through the Pay Pal option on our web site: www.hhcg.org .  Please take a few minutes to view that site, including the video on the opening page.  We have sent this appeal letter both electronically and by mail.  If you’d like to be added or removed from our e-mail or physical mailing list, feel free to drop us a note or e-mail at: helpinghandsclinic@....

We will be very thankful for your continued support during this exciting time of growth.

Please feel free to forward this letter to anyone who you feel would be interested in supporting the Helping Hands Clinic.

Sincerely yours,

Randy Stacey, MSW

Director, Helping Hands Clinic

Dear Miriam,

Great news. The Senate voted 62-33 in favor of an amendment offered by Sen. Jeff Merkley (D-OR) to urge an accelerated withdrawal of American troops from Afghanistan.

This is the first majority vote ever in either the Senate or the House calling for an end to the war in Afghanistan. It will help prod President Obama to accelerate the removal of U.S. troops from Afghanistan, contrary to the wishes of the U.S. Army

All but one Democrat voted for the amendment, as did 13 Republicans.

Please thank those Senators who voted for the amendment.

December 2, 2012

Dear Jacque,

The willingness of CODEPINK activists to cross borders and to act boldly for justice, often risking arrest, reminds me of the daring we had during the struggle for farm worker rights.

What a year CODEPINK has had. They organized a national book tour for Medea Benjamin’s Drone Warfare: Killing by Remote Control, helping to educate people about America’s secret drone wars. They traveled to Pakistan to protest drone attacks that have brought death and fear to vast swaths of the Pakistani hinterland.

From coverage on CNN to feature stories in the New York Times, the CODEPINK delegation’s presence in Pakistan brought much-needed media attention to the human costs of this new and unregulated American policy.

And right now CODEPINK has an emergency delegation on the ground inside Gaza delivering much-needed medical supplies in the wake of the Israeli attack.

Inspired by the California grape boycott, CODEPINK’s boycott campaign against illegal Israeli settlement cosmetics made by Ahava achieved new victories, particularly when Abigail Disney, granddaughter of Roy Disney, disclaimed her share of the company and pledged her share of the profits to organizations working against Israel’s occupation.

Time and again CODEPINK lends a helping hand and sheds a spotlight on inequality and injusticeLast month, they teamed up with New York’s Lower East Side Girls Club to support families hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy.

As a life-long feminist, and board member of Feminist Majority since it was founded, I can’t tell you how happy I was to see CODEPINK inside the Republican Convention standing up for reproductive healthcare and the rights of women to control their bodies.

This year CODEPINK celebrated a decade of creative resistance to war. Can you believe it’s been almost ten years since the US invasion of Iraq? While I wish groups like CODEPINK were out of business by now, the truth is there’s still a lot of work to do.

The US is now escalating secret wars with robotic drones. Meanwhile the government claims there isn’t enough money to fund our schools and hospitals, and after eleven years of occupation, most girls in Afghanistan still don’t have access to education. The same is true in the other places where the US is launching drone attacks, such as the tribal areas of Pakistan, and in Yemen and Somalia.

The Taliban’s shooting of 14-year-old Malala Yousafzai because she supported education for girls was a wake-up cry to the world. For the cost of one Predator drone, we could send 37,000 children to school in Pakistan for a year. What a great way to fight extremism, build a better future for the youth, and make ourselves safer by winning the hearts and minds of the people. It’s time to fund schools not drones!

Please join me this holiday season in making a gift to CODEPINK to support their work to redirect resources away from the bloated Pentagon budget and towards schools at home and abroad, and other life-affirming community needs.

I was humbled, thrilled and surprised when President Obama gave me the Presidential Medal of Freedom, and on that day I renewed my commitment to stand up for the freedom of people everywhere and their rights to dignity and justice. Supporting CODEPINK is one of the best ways to do just that!

ĄQue Viva CODEPINK!
Yours,

Dolores Huerta

"...Rise of the Drones

Meet a new breed of flying robots, from tiny swarming vehicles to giant unmanned planes. Aired January 23, 2013 on PBS

Program Description

Drones. These unmanned flying robots–some as large as jumbo jets, others as small as birds–do things straight out of science fiction. Much of what it takes to get these robotic airplanes to fly, sense, and kill has remained secret. But now, with rare access to drone engineers and those who fly them for the U.S. military, NOVA reveals the amazing technologies that make drones so powerful as we see how a remotely-piloted drone strike looks and feels from inside the command center. From cameras that can capture every detail of an entire city at a glance to swarming robots that can make decisions on their own to giant air frames that can stay aloft for days on end, drones are changing our relationship to war, surveillance, and each other. And it's just the beginning. Discover the cutting edge technologies that are propelling us toward a new chapter in aviation history as NOVA gets ready for "Rise of the Drones."..."

FADP Update

Friends,

Gov. Rick Scott has ordered Larry Mann to be executed Wednesday, April 10th at 6pm ET. Please contact the governor’s office and ask him to suspend executions to investigate Florida’s mistake-ridden Death Penalty state program that has seen 24 Death Row exonerations – far more than any other state. We have had one exoneration for every three executions. Just two months ago Seth Penalver was freed after 13 years on Death Row.

Governor Rick Scott – Phone 850-488-7146. Rick.Scott@....

Please sign and share the Florida execution moratorium petition. There are not quite 1,000 signatures. The petitioners plan to present this to Gov. Scott and hold a press conference. Many more sign-ons are needed. Please share this petition anywhere, any way, and with anyone you can.

2013 is shaping up to be an absolutely critical year for our movement. While Maryland and other states are busy repealing the Death Penalty, Florida’s governor is busy scheduling executions. Efforts are afoot in the legislature to “speed up” and increase executions despite of the record number of wrongful convictions. There will be intense challenges and new opportunities. We are working VERY hard on both offense and defense and MUST be positioned with the means to beat back these challenges and seize opportunities. FADP is an all-volunteer coalition. We need your help for the basic necessities of an effective campaign. Please help.

“If not us, who?  If not now, when?” – John F. Kennedy.

Visit and "like" FADP’s Facebook page.

Shine the light,

---Mark

WILL CORPORATIONS GET THE RIGHT TO VOTE?

The headline reads, “Montana Considers Giving Corporations The Right To
Vote” — laughable if it weren’t true.

Legislator Steve Lavin, a member of American Legislative Exchange Council
(ALEC), introduced the bill, which to the legislature’s credit was quickly
tabled in committee. Even the most uninformed citizen understands that voting is
for people, not corporations.

Wait a minute, following this attempt to endow more rights to corporations by
giving them the vote, the Supreme Court heard arguments to weaken key
provisions of the Voting Rights Act (VRA). After a number of states passed
ALEC-sponsored Voter ID laws last summer, and this latest exploit to undermine
the VRA, it is clear there’s an effort to minimize the power of ‘we the
people’ by limiting our access to the ballot box, while simultaneously
maximizing the power of corporations and businesses by giving them the vote.

Please sign the Motion to Amend petition: http://tinyurl.com/mta-motion-to-amend

It may sound completely wacky, but this is an obvious next step for corporations
because they are legally recognized as people. It’s a good thing that the Move
to Amend Coalition is educating and organizing in communities across the nation.
Only a grassroots movement determined to restore the power of ‘we the
people’ can overcome the money and power behind ALEC.

In order to be effective, we must keep growing our community, which is why we
have set a goal of 500,000 signatures on our Motion to Amend petition by
year’s end, nearly doubling our supporters. It doesn’t matter which side of
the aisle you sit on. Ours is a non-partisan—and winning issue--in red and
blue districts alike. It’s in every person’s best interest!

Please sign the petition!

We want people voting, including those protected by the VRA, and we certainly
don’t want corporations endowed with the right to vote. Help us build a
movement with power enough to reestablish ‘we the people’ as the sovereign
rulers of this great nation. Sign the petition today.

Thanks for taking action, Miriam

Gainesville Citizens for Alternatives to the Death Penalty presents: "West of
Memphis"

When: 7pm Monday, April 15th
Cost: $3-5 suggested donation
Where: Civic Media Center, 433 S Main St

A new documentary written and directed by Academy Award nominated filmmaker,
Amy Berg ("Deliver Us From Evil") and produced by first time filmmakers Damien
Echols and Lorri Davis, in collaboration with the multiple Academy award winning
team of Peter Jackson and Fran Walsh, "West of Memphis" tells the untold story
behind an extraordinary and desperate fight to bring the truth to light; a fight
to stop the State of Arkansas from killing an innocent man.

Starting with a searing examination of the police investigation into the 1993
murders of three, eight year old boys, Christopher Byers, Steven Branch, and
Michael Moore, in the small town of West Memphis, Arkansas, the film goes on to
uncover new evidence surrounding the arrest and conviction of the other three
victims of this shocking crime- Damien Echols, Jason Baldwin and Jessie
Misskelley. All three were teenagers when they became the target of the police
investigation; all three went on to lost 18 years of their lives-imprisoned for
cimes they did not commit.

How the documentary came to be, is in itself a key part of the story of how
Damien Echols' fight to save his own life. The film reveals how close he, his
wife Lorri Davis, along with his legal team, friends and supporters, came to
losing that battle. But as Echols, who spent eighteen years on death row,
himself has stated "... in the face of such horror, in the face of resounding
grief and pain, you cannot give up
 you must never give up."

GCADP(Gainesville Citizens for Alternatives to the Death Penalty)is the local
