Best Documentary — British Film Institute Awards

You come out shaken by the fathomless destructiveness of idiocy and the healing powers of belief and remediation. —New Yorker

Into the Abyss does what too few documentaries these days do - it gives ample play to all sides of the argument. Herzog allows us to think things through on our own. —Christian Science Monitor

The paradox of this film is that it is both unremittingly bleak and rigorously humane. —New York Times

In his fascinating exploration of a triple homicide case in Conroe, Texas, master filmmaker Werner Herzog (Cave of Forgotten Dreams, Grizzly Man) probes the human psyche to explore why people kill—and why a state kills. In intimate conversations with those involved, including 28-year-old death row inmate Michael Perry (scheduled to die within eight days of appearing on-screen), Herzog achieves what he describes as “a gaze into the abyss of the human soul.” Herzog’s inquiries also extend to the families of the victims and perpetrators as well as a state executioner and pastor who’ve been with death row prisoners as they’ve taken their final breaths. As he’s so often done before, Herzog’s investigation unveils layers of humanity, making an enlightening trip out of ominous territory. 1hr 47min | Germany | in English | PG-13

Directed by: Werner Herzog

Featuring: Jason Burkett, Werner Herzog and Michael Perry

Friends and Family!

Please take a moment to consider donating to an amazing group in Haiti that I had the pleasure of spending time with while I was in Haiti this fall.

Gran Lakou is an amazing performance troupe in Jakmel, Haiti that champions for the rights of LGBTQ people in Haiti.  They advocate for equal rights and spread a beautiful message of self love, acceptance and anti-discrimination through their dance.
Because the group is inclusive of lesbian, gay, bi, trans and queer performers, they face many challenges- as there are few legal protections for LGBTQ people in Haiti.  They regularly struggle with maintaining a safe practice space, and experience discrimination & threats/violence on a regular basis.

Please show your solidarity with Haiti's LGBTQ community, by making a small contribution towards their group.  Right now they are fundraising to participate in the national Carnival festival-   coming up sooon (mid february)!

While I was in Haiti, I made a short video so people could catch a glimpse of how amazing they are, please check it out:

and while you are there, make a small (or large!) donation!  Just $8 is a costume for one dancer!

If you are unable to donate, please pass this message along to whoever you think may be able to!

Thanks!  Mesi Anpil!

>**about emma's revolution**

_Smart, funny and informative. Like Rachel Maddow and Jon Stewart with guitars._
----------

>_This concert will be a cd release for **emma's revolution's** latest recording, ["Revolutions Per Minute"](http://www.emmasrevolution.com/). With **RPM**, emma's revolution creates an electrifying soundscape of their characteristically "rousing and soulful" songs of social conscience, in settings from intimate acoustic to full-on funk._

>**emma's revolution's** latest song, _["Occupy the USA!,"](http://www.emmasrevolution.com/new/2011/oct/20/free-download-occupy-usa/) was featured in the [Washington Post](http://www.washingtonpost.com/lifestyle/style/occupy-wall-street-inspires-a-new-generation-of-protest-songs/2011/10/14/gIQAANnqpL_story.html?hpid=z5) and their anthem,["Peace, Salaam, Shalom"](http://emmasrevolution.com/listen/album/one/), written in September 2001, is sung around the world._

>_"Great melodies and harmonies with a driving beat that just makes you want to, well, RISE! These are anthemic songs in the folk tradition that are calls to action . . . truly exciting, fun, invigorating and right on point." -- WMNF Radio_

With hauntingly beautiful harmonies and powerful acoustic instrumentals that deliver the energy and strength of their convictions, **emma's revolution** creates new standards in the art of social justice. Their songs have been sung for the **Dalai Lama**, praised by **Pete Seeger** and recorded by **Holly Near**.

**emma's revolution** is the duo of activist musicians, Pat Humphries & Sandy O. Based in the Washington DC area, the duo won Grand Prize in the John Lennon Songwriting Contest for ["If I Give Your Name"](http://emmasrevolution.com/media/clips/one/One-03-If-I-Give-Your-Name.mp3), about the families of undocumented workers killed on 9/11. ["Peace, Salaam, Shalom"](http://emmasrevolution.com/listen/album/one/) is sung around the world and has been called the "anthem of the anti-war movement." **emma's revolution's** music has been featured on NPR's "All Things Considered" and Pacifica's "Democracy Now!"

In the spirit of Emma Goldman's famous attribution, “If I can't dance, I don't want to be part of your revolution,” **emma's revolution** brings their uprising of truth, hope and a dash of healthy irreverence to concerts and peace & justice, labor, human rights, environmental, LGBT and women's rights events around the world. Touring over 200 days a year, **emma’s revolution** has performed at hundreds of events from Canada, Chile, Korea, Scotland, England, Israel/Palestine, Nicaragua, Cuba and throughout the US spreading their message of peace and justice. **emma’s revolution** consistently delivers performances that are an _uprising of hope and harmony so powerful audiences leap to their feet._

I heard emma's revolution at a peace conference in Las Vegas, in 2005, marking the 60th anniversary of Hiroshima/Nagasaki. They are terrific! I bought a CD there despite my limited budget & love listening & re-listening. They are tremendous progressive voices. One of their songs, about undocumented workers who died in the World Trade Centers, won a John Lennon songwriting award. I am beyond thrilled that they are coming here!
So they come highly recommended by me and Mark. Don't miss it!

JUSTICE FOR TRAYVON AND JAY

On the face of it, Trayvon Martin and my friend Jay didn’t have much in common.  Trayvon was a teenager from an affluent and well-educated family who was successfully meeting life’s challenges and had a bright future.  Jay was a homeless man camped in the woods near Williston Road.  He was in fragile health and lived on disability.  This is what they have in common:  both were members of disenfranchised and endangered groups in society, since Trayvon was a black male teenager and Jay was a homeless man.  Both were gunned down by people who claimed a self-defense justification.  When I heard that Jay had been gunned down, in a public area in the presence of witnesses, by a man who was claiming self-defense, I was stunned with disbelief.  Jay was a gentle soul who never gave anybody trouble, to the best of my knowledge.  His severe asthma kept him from many life activities but he did love to read.  He came by my house maybe twice a month to turn in a bag of books and get another bag.  I’d usually make him a cup of coffee and we would sit and talk about this and that.  Who could feel threatened by Jay?

I testified for Jay before the Grand Jury.  I thought that indictment of the man who shot him was going to be a slam dunk.  When the Grand Jury did not return an indictment I emailed the assistant district attorney in charge and asked him what in the world had gone wrong.  He explained to me Florida’s newly passed “Stand Your Ground Law,” a law he regarded as abhorrent and that he felt would lead to vigilante murderers walking free.

Prophetic words.  Jay didn’t have anyone to fight for him, but Trayvon does.  I believe there will be justice for Trayvon and, in this justice, there will be some justice for Jay and for all the Jays and Trayvons who have been murdered by thugs and vigilantes.

There will be a Trayvon Martin Community Rally for Justice on Saturday, March 31 at 6 p.m. at Faith United Methodist Church, near the corner of NE 39th Avenue and across the road from Rawlings Elementary School.  For more information on this rally, you can call the Rev. Milford Griner at 665-4066 or 377-5022.  May this rally be well-attended. We cannot sit by in silence. This is our business and our concern, as members of the human family.

SPRING AND PEANUT BUTTER

Since the price of peanut butter started skyrocketing, we have received many, many donations of this essential manna.  Thank you so much!  Peanut butter is the fuel that keeps the Home Van running.  As for Spring, it is a time of grace in the homeless community, without deadly cold or heat.    On last night’s run our folks were happy and relaxed and we all had a good time.  I also had long conversations with two old friends who have successfully gotten off crack after many years of enslavement.  One of them has moved into an apartment and bought himself a fancy little scooter (bright red!) and just came by to show himself off!  The other, who has been off crack for three years, has received a bus ticket back to Tennessee from his family, who now want him back.   Crack is possibly the most addictive substance on the face of the earth, from what I have read.  I am battling sugar addiction (with varying degrees of success).  That struggle, multiplied a zillion percent, is what it takes to get off crack, but there are those who do it.  I love happy endings!

WATER

The weather mavvens are predicting an unusually hot summer for the southeast this year.  Our ‘not unusually  hot summers’ are bad enough.  I am glad the Home Van has gone to one official driveout a week, because we will now have more time and more money to do water drop-offs at Tent City.   If you run into a sale on bottled water, think of us.  It is not too early to start stockpiling.

Peace and blessings to all of you,

arupa

We the People of Alachua County,

The Alachua Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) will be holding their bi-monthly regular meeting this coming Tuesday, with Public Comments scheduled for 5:30 pm.

Whydo we bring this to your attention?  The Commissioners are considering placing our Corporate Personhood initiative (see text below) on the November ballot.  Four of us were at the meeting two weeks ago making our case during the public comments.  Good news! - they wanted to learn more. This issue needs to be kept in front of them.

Getting our initiative on the county ballot in November is a BIG DEAL.  Passing the 28th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution will require a massive public education effort.  An election with help focus public attention and give us a receptive audience for our message.

Please consider attending Tuesday's meeting and arriving at least 15' prior to the scheduled comment period, and either saying a few words, sentences, paragraphs (each speaker has up to 5') or standing in back of others to show the Commissioners our public support.  A large crowd would be nice!

Move to Amend Model Initiative Text

RESOLVED, the People of Alachua County, State of Florida, stand with the Move to Amend campaign and communities across the country to defend democracy from the corrupting effects of undue corporate power by amending the United States Constitution to establish that:
   1. Only human beings, not corporations, are endowed with constitutional rights, and
   2. Money is not speech, and therefore regulating political contributions and spending is not equivalent to limiting political speech.
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the People of Alachua County, State of Florida, hereby instruct our state and federal representatives to enact resolutions and legislation to advance this effort.

This is terrible news. With Florida having more exonerees than any other state it is outrageous to eliminate the body that is working to find remedies to reduce wrongful convictions!  Many good individuals have spent hours at Commission meetings working on recommendations that now will unlikely even be published. Call Scott at 850-488-7146 to express your disgust.

Gov. Scott Kills Florida Innocence Commission

If you didn’t think Gov. Rick Scott of Florida could be any more repulsive, you were wrong. He’s now eliminated the Florida Innocence Commission, which reviews claims of innocence in state courts and advocates for reforms that will reduce the number of wrongful commissions.
Florida holds the dubious honor of wrongfully convicting the largest number of innocent people put on death row. Since 1973, the Sunshine State wrongfully incarcerated and released twenty-three people set for a state sanctioned killing. And nationwide, 140 people in twenty-six states have been exonerated of the crimes for which they were convicted and sent to death row. If this tells independent voters anything, it’s that the criminal justice system is in desperate need of reform, with capital punishment leading the way.
It would seem that miscarriages of justice of such a magnitude would lead Florida policy makers and political leaders to take measures to ensure that number declines. Despite this grisly scenario, Florida Republican Governor Rick Scott recently eliminated the funding necessary to keep the Florida Innocence Commission alive. Created by the Florida Supreme Court, the commission is tasked with advocating for reforms after examining wrongful convictions by “studying false eyewitness identifications, interrogation techniques, false confessions, the use of informants, the handling of forensic evidence, attorney competence and conduct, the processing of cases and the administration of the death penalty.”
But with one stroke of the pen, Scott nixed the Commission by vetoing the funds the legislature appropriated for it – which last year stood at $200,000, a drop in the bucket for a state with a2013 budget of about $70 billion. This isn’t the first time Scott meddled with attempts at reforming Florida’s criminal justice system. Earlier this year he vetoed a nearly unanimous piece of legislation (combined House and Senate vote 152-4 in favor) that would move non-violent drug offenders out of prison and into treatment programs after completing half of their sentence.
I’d say this is unbelievable, but it’s entirely believable. And Balko points out that this isn’t just wrong on grounds of justice and fairness, it’s also fiscally irresponsible. The veto of funding for the innocence commission saves about $200,000 a year, but wrongful convictions cost the state an average of $2 million per case.

Because Freedom Can't Protect Itself

Gov. Rick Scott
Act now. Tell Governor Scott that we won't stand for any voter suppression ploys.

Dear Miriam,

It probably comes as no surprise that Florida is ground zero in the nationwide fight over voter suppression. And the ACLU has been right in the middle of it.

When they passed a law making voter registration next to impossible here in Florida, we (along with the Brennan Center) went to court on behalf of the League of Women Voters and other groups and won.

Now they're trying to purge hundreds, possibly thousands of rightfully-registered voters off the rolls — and we (along with the Lawyers Committee for Civil Rights Under Law) filed a lawsuit to prevent it.

Governor Rick Scott just won't quit. He's bound and determined to block the vote in Florida — especially for minority voters.

Tell Governor Scott the ACLU is on alert and won't let him derail or deny anyone's voting rights.

The ACLU is fighting tooth and nail all across the country to protect people's right to vote. And we won't stop fighting — not here in Florida, not anywhere.

Florida is a key battleground in our effort to make sure people aren't denied this most fundamental freedom. Let's make it clear we won't let any attack against that fundamental right go unanswered.

Act now. Tell Governor Scott that we won't stand for any voter suppression ploys.

We know when we stand together we can make a difference. But they are going to throw everything they've got at us in the six months leading up to Election Day. With your help, I'm confident that whenever and wherever people's right to vote is put in jeopardy, the ACLU will be there — protecting the right to vote and the Voting Rights Act that people fought so hard for almost 50 years ago.

Let's keep fighting,

Howard Simon
Executive Director, ACLU of Florida

Dear Miriam,

What: Board of County Commissioners meeting

Where: 12 SE 1st. St., Gainesville, FL

When: 5:30pm, Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Move To Amend Gainesville, an affiliate of the national organization, Move To Amend, is asking the Alachua County Commission to put a non-binding ballot initiave on the November ballot.

We plan to make a big push this Tuesday, June 26, at the Commission meeting with dozens of supporters speaking in favor. We will be gathering in front of the Commission chambers, starting at 5:00pm, to rally supporters.

History - The goal of Move To Amend is to amend the constitution to say that Corporations are not people, and money is not free speech, in rebuttal to the Supreme Court ruling on Citizens United v. FEC in 2010. Hundreds of towns, cities, and counties across the country have already passed this resolution to ask Congress to begin the process of amending the Constitution.

We would like you to attend this event on Tuesday.  If you would like background information regarding Move To Amend you may talk to a spokesman, Phil Reitz (352.443.9814).  You can also go to the website for additional information.
