A question for all of the kayakers out there.... This weekend they will be
holding the Potomac Whitewater Festival, which includes a Community Paddle in
the river from Sandy Beach (just below Great Falls) to the Angler's Inn take
out. All skill levels are welcome for the Community Paddle at 1:00 on Saturday,
provided you have your own boat and life jacket.
My plan is to leave my car at the Angler's Inn lot (which I am sure will be
packed) and paddle my little boat up from Widewater to Great Falls Tavern using
the Canal. Never having gone beyond Widewater, I am not familiar with the take
outs and put ins from Lock 15 up to the GF Visitors Center. Has anyone done
this and how practical would it be to haul a 42 pound rec boat out and relaunch
on the other side of a lock?
I paddled almost up to Lock 15 this weekend and didn't really see anyplace that
would make for a good take out. Most of the shore is pretty steep. There was a
flat rock sticking out from the bank under the plank walkway, but I was hoping
there would be something more suitable for hauling a boat out.
Thanks for any advice you can offer.
