lizard_tbone

I've caught them as well. Nasty habit. Can't help it. I do some
editing for an eZine and got the job by accident because when it
first started and I was pulled on staff, I read one of the articles
and mentioned the typos and what not that needed to be fixed. It's
not a major thing, just something here and there, mostly with an
extra word that shouldn't be there, something simple like 'the', or
the missing word in a sentence. For some of us, picking out those
things is a pain, but it has never ruined my enjoyment of reading
his books. A slip here, a slip there, goes to show he's only human
like the rest of us.

They are

1 Pacific Vortex but it was the 6th book that came out
2 The Mediterranean Caper
3 Iceberg
4 Raise The Titanic
5 Vixen 03
6 Night Probe
7 Deep Six
8 Cyclops
9 Treasure
10 Dragon
11 Sahara
12 Inca Gold
13 Shock Wave
14 Flood Tide
15 Atlantis Found
16 Valhalla Rising
17 Trojan Odyssey
18 Black Wind

As i have said Pacific Vortex is really the first book that had Dirk
& Al but at the time it was thought is was not good enough to print
so Med Caper was the first published book and latter Clive re did the
book some and then it was published if you read the book's intro
Clive say's that it does not have all the plots that latter books
does

Thank you..
I was aware of Pacific Vortex's history. Also that "Mediterranean Caper" was
also published in England under the name "Mayday" but published in 1977 as
opposed to 1973 for the US edition of MC

This is a great site for Pitt minutae. http://www.geocities.com/hn4dpitt/

And there's this book called The Clive Cussler Code (available at cussler.net)
which investigates a lot of the curiosities surrounding the release of Pacific
Vortex.

The following is from the Cusslermen web site:

Many new fans ask what order should they read the books in. Only one thing
should be considered, and that is that Pacific Vortex was written first, but
published much later.

Here is my recommendation for reading order:

Pacific Vortex (1983) Dirk Pitt Novel
Mediterranean Caper (1973) Dirk Pitt Novel
Iceberg (1975) Dirk Pitt Novel
Raise the Titanic (1976) Dirk Pitt Novel
Vixen 03 (1978) Dirk Pitt Novel
Night Probe (1981) Dirk Pitt Novel
Deep Six (1984) Dirk Pitt Novel
Cyclops (1986) Dirk Pitt Novel
Treasure (1988) Dirk Pitt Novel
Dragon (1990) Dirk Pitt Novel
Sahara (1992) Dirk Pitt Novel
Inca Gold (1994) Dirk Pitt Novel
Shockwave (1996) Dirk Pitt Novel
Sea Hunters (1996) Non-Fiction
Flood Tide (1997) Dirk Pitt Novel
Clive Cussler and Dirk Pitt Revealed (1998)
Serpent (1999) NUMA Files
Atlantis Found (1999) Dirk Pitt Novel
Blue Gold (2000) NUMA Files
Valhalla Rising (2001) Dirk Pitt Novel
Fire Ice (2002) NUMA Files
The Sea Hunters II (2002) Non-Fiction
White Death (2003) NUMA Files
Golden Buddha (2003) Oregon Files
Trojan Odyssey (2003) Dirk Pitt Novel
Lost City (2004) NUMA Files
Sacred Stone (2004) Oregon Files
Black Wind (2004) Dirk Pitt Novel
Polar Shift (2005) NUMA Files
Dark Watch (2005) Oregon Files
The Adventures of Vin Fiz (Children's Book)

Hope that it helps.

Hi,
I've just bought my first Cussler novel, Trojan Odyssey, after being
blown away by the film, Sahara, which was great!
The book has been a great read so far and I reckon that I will buy
many more.
One thing I did find VERY strange, however, and which made me wince in
disbelief was the intelligent computer, Max, which was capable of
human like reasoning, and apparently, the ability to conduct
complicated scientific tests itself! I found this so unbelieveable
that it 'pulled me out' of the story. I think it would have been far
more believable if Max had been the director of a lab, rather than
being a computer! Does Max creep up in many Cussler novels?
thanks.

Hi Tim,

Since Max was created my NUMA's computer guru, yeager, it does appear in a
lot of the books. You kind of get used to her, although I agree that the
computer while an amusing idea, is kind of odd, especially when it gets
sarcastic.
If you like Trojan Odyssey, you will love Night Probe. Make that your next
stop, or better yet start at the beginning!!!

They are worth the odd wince here and there.

Enjoying Black Wind audio now. The wince was when a certain someone

I was thinking about this today on my ride home from work. (I get 60
min to work and another 60 going home, perfect for audio books.) Is
there a fan web site that presents the vehicles and ship to the CC
books?

That would be pretty cool to be able to go to a fan site and have all
the ships, subs, cars, transports, everything available for us to
gander at.

Unfortunately I don't have the time or skill to do so. It would be a
fun hobby to maintain a page like that for fans.

maybe someday?

Years ago when I lived in Monterey I had just started reading Cussler
with the book Raise the Titanic. I hung out with a group of aviation
enthusiasts. We would go to dinner at a place called the Flying Lady
restaurant in Morgan Hill, then a rural enclave near San Jose, now
part of the metropolitan area. The proprietor had a private
collection of vintage airplanes, cars, and carriages. I recall
thinking to myself "this must be what Dirk Pitt's hangar looks like".

I can see why you would be weirded out by the computer. If you read
the novels in the chronological order you kinda get used to it. Most
of the technology in the book is accurate to today's technology but
Cussler portrays Yeager as a genius and has been improving Max for
years. I definatly recomment that you start from the beginning or
else you will not really understand the context of the books

I don't know why I wrote paperback Dark watch is a new release and a
hardback. My mind has had far too much going on. My oldest friend and neighbor
for
as long as we have lived here almost 18 years passed away this week, funeral
is tomorrow. Everything is a blur. That day can't remember what day LOL I
purchased a number of books all were paperbacks but this one. I also bought
Endurance by Worsley about the H. M. S. Endurance, The Moscow Vector, A Million
Little Pieces by James Frey, Night Fall by Nelson de Mille, and the Lion Witch
and the Wardrobe. Now if I can just find time to get them read.

I'm sorry to hear that about your friend.

I've looked for the Hardback, since it's all I like to buy when it
comes to CC's work, but I've only been able to find the large
softcover one.

Hi all

Longtime Cussler buff ... just signed on to the group.

I was happily reading "Polar Shift" (the '05 hardcover Putnam edition)
when I reached page 280. The next page is 345. Also, there's a
continuity break in the story line, too. Anyone else's copy have the
missing pages?

So what's a Cussler fan to do? Read Dark Watch of course!

* * * *

Who else would like to read a story that had Dirk, Kurt and Juan all
working together? Or maybe a common story told from three different
view points in three different books?

* JB *

PS - I'd love to read a chapter or two that shows Dirk riding in the
railroad car (the one he keeps in his hangar) that he picked up in
"Night Probe."
