This is a project of NUMA Australia headed by Special Projects
Director Wayne Sampey, completely separate from NUMA U.S.
However, I did not find the specific story from the link you sent.

Yeah, sorry all, the link didn't translate over to the posting. Go
to Yahoo!news, search in Yahoo! News Only, then type in WWII
Japanese sub. It will bring up the recent story.

I found the article.

It's probably just an indication of how good Cussler's real life research
is....

Well, commercial fishermen long line for halibut. They don't swim in
schools they are bottom fish related to flounder. It might be better to
think of them as giant flounder because we catch them anywhere from 50 to
378 lbs each. The best one might do is hit a chick hole. Chicks are
considered 20lbs and under. Most the fishermen I know want to know where to
find those schooling halibut because halibut pay $6.00 a pound.

I've been to see the movie. While certain aspects of the book are
there, the actual story has been slightly changed. The main theme seems
to be the hunt for the Texas with the red tide story a sideline.
Also while Kitty Manncocks'aeroplane is there,no mention of who it
belonged to is inferred. If you've read the book you know where it fits
in.If not then you're non-plussed.Also there is no mention of the
UNICRATT being involved.
While the film will be disappointing to Dirk Pitt fans it is not
altogether a bad movie.Think Raise the Titanic, but this is better than
that.A couple of the characters are portrayed differently in the
fil;Rudi Gunn comes across as Joey,Al just isn't right.Even the
portrayal of Dirk comes across as more interested in the gold than
anything else.
Hopefully if there is another film it will stay closer to the
book. But I won't hold my breath. These type of films are made for a
bigger audience than afficionadas of the books. Also it was reported
that Clive was going to take more control over the storyline and the
casting.What Happened?

Hubby and I went to see "Sahara" this afternoon. The 1 p.m. matinee was
pretty much full for our little valley community. The audience seemed to be
really pulled into the movie and enjoyed it.
We went to see the movie not to compare it with his book, but to see if the
essence of Cussler's adventurous story was pulled off.
We were impressed. A tremendous action movie I think will get 2 thumbs up.
The cast did a good job, but I was disappointed in their personal interviews
on the tv talk shows over the last two weeks because I don't recall any of
them discussing who wrote the story -- Clive Cussler. But, maybe they were
gagged from doing so because of the pending law suit. I liked the 'touches
of Cussler that were identifiable throughout the movie -- his humor, his
vintage car at the end of the movie reminded me of his photos on the back of
his book jackets. We think that the industry did good on "Sahara" and
should bring a little joy to the 'grumpy ol' guy!!' LOL (Cussler is dear
to our hearts!)

Nancy, a good review. CC Wrote the book. Hollywood wrote the script. The only
way CC will ever have a Movie follow his book to the letter is to put up his own
money, and review every step in the process. Cussler has made a contribution to
movie goers. His book followers are from a different world. For those of who
love this great author, lets rejoice in the success of his works. I can't wait
for his next book, but I will.

I've seen the movie twice, and each time I enjoyed it. It's like a
modern day Indiana Jones movie. It's been so long since I read the
book that I can't remember it, so I wasn't comparing each other. I
wasn't disappointed at all. Even though the guy playing Al wasn't
what I'd envision, the actors did a good job. The worked well
together. I never thought once that Dirk was more interested in the
gold than finding the boat. Even though I thought Sandecker could have
been a bit more anal, the way he played fit right in with everyone
else in the movie. I'll be buying this when it comes out on DVD and
the soundtrack. The music used complimented the movie very well.

Now if you'll excuse me, I have this urge to go read the book again.

Hey, I just joined. I am a huge Cussler fan, discovering his books
from a classmate in my college english class. I have read all the
Dirk Pitt and Kurt Austin novels. I don't think I could pick a
favorite novel!!lol
I haven't seen Sahara yet. I want to but I am also disappointed that
it doesn't appear to be very much like the book. And I really
disagree with Steve Zahn as Al....what were they thinking?!

OK, I did it, I saw the Movie today. I think the filmmakers did a good job. To
me the Movie was very good. The acting was good, the characters did not fit the
image that is formed in my mind after having read most of Clive Cussler's
novels. But that is ok, who out there can say for sure that the image of "Dirk"
that your mind conjures up is the same as the image that I perceive. There is
no question that Clive Cussler was given credit as being the author of the book
"Saraha" True, the movie did not follow exactly the plot as in the book...But
what the heck...That's Hollywood. I still think the film is a job well done. I
prefer the actual book of course.
