Yeah, I agree. From the trailer it does look like he is there for comic relief.
I did read that
they went with a script that was not cussler-approved and that he wasn't happy
with Steve
Zahn being the Al choice. Also, he is suing them. So, that should play out
pretty
interesting.

I never thought about Al as a main character, but it would be interesting. He
could have
taken over Dirk's job when he retired.

would definately be interesting

"Raise the Titanic" was a rather boring movie indeed. After I'd read some
Clive Cussler novels including raise the Titanic I was so excited to watch
the movie on TV...but I was deeply disappointed. It lacked the excitement
and action of the novel, and Jason Robards as Admiral Sandecker and Richard
Donner as Dirk Pitt were very bad choises. As was M.Emmet Walsh as Al
Giordino.

I think it's very difficult to turn a Cussler novel into a movie. Either you
have too much dialogue and too little action, or you have too much action
and effects and too little dialogue. Well, I think in order to hook the
movie audiences around the world who haven't read Clive Cussler yet (most of
the movie fans haven't, I presume) the movie will have to be full of nail
biting action, suspense and impressive special effects. That's what folks
want. But the story itself will probably be pushed far into the background.

Let's wait and see...I'm looking forward to seeing Sahara...(which is one of
my favourite Cussler novels and one of the most exciting. I bought it during
one of my visits to England and it holds lots of memories for me as most of
Clive's books do...)

Pete

Oh yes, I agree!
That's what's one of the things that make Cussler's books so attractive for
me. Dirk is so modest he equally shares his praise and glory with his buddy
Al. And Al Giordino is a guy who'd do to ride the river with anytime. A true
friend who'd go thru hell for Pitt and everyone in need of help. Especially
in those books where Cussler describes what Al has done with the submersible
and the underwater vehicles he's developed, he drags Al Giodino in the
foreground and focuses on him. I equally like Dirk and Al, and I have ever
since I've read "Vixen 03".

If there ever should be a novel focusing on Al Giordino, I think it will
have to contain more of Al's romantic exploits into the world of women. He's
a womanizer and a romantic and thats to be considered if a novel should
describe his adventures.

Just watched the trailer, and what I thought when I read all the reports and
opinions about the movie came true.

It seems that the story has been changed. I got the impression that Dirk and
Al (the actor for Al Giordino was indeed a very poor choice) don't
investigate the source of toxic waste led into the nile river and the sea by
African-French industry moguls but rather go on a treasure hunt to prove
that a civil war ship containing a war treasure sailed from the US to
Africa.

So, where does that leave us? A treasure hunt in the sahara desert, complete
with Indiana Jones - like underground caves, lots of shooting with machine
guns and rocket launchers, helicopter attacks, lots of pyrotechnics and very
little underwater action? As I surmised, it seems that the story wasn't as
important as action and effects. Well, I don't want to sound too pessimistic
but as a Dirk Pitt fan who was hooked by the Sahara book til the end I'm
afraid the movie will not reach the quality of the novel...

Does anyone know if Perlmutter or Yeager are even
going to be in the movie? I checked imdb.com and their
names are not listed in the cast.

Pete,
The old movie "Flight of the Phoenix" is being remade. I just hope it isn't
released at the same time as "Sahara." Because it will overshadow one of
the most exciting scenes from Sahara.

Al is one of my favorite characters. In the books you

even better a story with Zavala & Giordino as the main
   characters.

Tim,
Read the book first. Then you'll see that the movie did not do it justice.
Clive himself is very disheartened about how that movie turned out. That's
why he
wanted more control in the making of Sahara. But I don't think he was able
to control
as much as he wanted. Read his books. You'll get hooked.

I didn't like "Flight of the Phoenix" - it was too long and too boring for
my taste. However, I'd have preferred if they had chosen an excellent novel
like "Atlantis found" for a Dirk Pitt movie. That one was a rollercoaster
ride of action with an ice-cold arch villain, if there ever was one... There
are so many movies with exotic locations like the Sahara desert, but not
that many with settings in the antarctica...

   Pete,
The old movie "Flight of the Phoenix" is being remade. I just hope it
isn't
released at the same time as "Sahara." Because it will overshadow one of
the most exciting scenes from Sahara.

"Raise the Titanic" was a rather boring movie indeed. After I'd read some
Clive Cussler novels including raise the Titanic I was so excited to watch
the movie on TV...but I was deeply disappointed. It lacked the excitement
and action of the novel, and Jason Robards as Admiral Sandecker and
Richard
Donner as Dirk Pitt were very bad choises. As was M.Emmet Walsh as Al
   Giordino.

I think it's very difficult to turn a Cussler novel into a movie. Either
you
have too much dialogue and too little action, or you have too much action
and effects and too little dialogue. Well, I think in order to hook the
movie audiences around the world who haven't read Clive Cussler yet (most
of
the movie fans haven't, I presume) the movie will have to be full of nail
biting action, suspense and impressive special effects. That's what folks
want. But the story itself will probably be pushed far into the
background.

Let's wait and see...I'm looking forward to seeing Sahara...(which is one
of
my favourite Cussler novels and one of the most exciting. I bought it
during
one of my visits to England and it holds lots of memories for me as most
of
   Clive's books do...)

I think Zahn was a bad choice also. I guess we'll just
have to wait and see when the movie comes out. He
definitely doesn't look like Dr Cussler's description
of Al. I hope he is not there just for comic relief.
Al is one of my favorite characters. In the books you
always get the impression that Al is just as capable
as Pitt. I have thought for along time that a book
with Giordino as the main character would be just as
interesting as the Dirk Pitt or Kurt Austin books, or
even better a story with Zavala & Giordino as the main
     characters.

Clive himself is very disheartened about how that movie turned out. That's
why he
wanted more control in the making of Sahara. But I don't think he was able
to control
as much as he wanted. Read his books. You'll get hooked.

Watch this trailer and tell me what you think?

Matthew McConehey (I know that isnt spelled right) doesnt sem as bad
as it once did. Im afraid that Al thought is a bad casting job, but I
dont want to pass judgement, we will have to wait and see.

Check out the trailer here

Post your comments here, at least we know it must be better than the
original Raise the Titanic movie! Did anyone actually see that?

Let's wait and see...I'm looking forward to seeing Sahara...(which is
one
   of
my favourite Cussler novels and one of the most exciting. I bought it
   during
one of my visits to England and it holds lots of memories for me as most
   of
     Clive's books do...)

I think Zahn was a bad choice also. I guess we'll just
have to wait and see when the movie comes out. He
definitely doesn't look like Dr Cussler's description
of Al. I hope he is not there just for comic relief.
Al is one of my favorite characters. In the books you
always get the impression that Al is just as capable
as Pitt. I have thought for along time that a book
with Giordino as the main character would be just as
interesting as the Dirk Pitt or Kurt Austin books, or
even better a story with Zavala & Giordino as the main
       characters.

I rented the movie Titanic years and go and actually liked it. Not
that I'm saying it was great, but it certainly wasn't the worst thing
I've ever seen.

As for who they chose for Al... I'll have to agree, they could have
picked someone better. That is certainly not how I pictured Al. I'm
thinking Italian and that guy certainly doesn't look like a muscled
Italian.

Also, that link posted for the Trailer, I kept getting a blank page.
If people have that same problem, here's another link.
http://www.apple.com/trailers/paramount/sahara/sahara_large.html

Whether the movie is going to be good, great, or not, I'm just excited
to see it done and can't wait to see it. Opening night, I will be there.

Yes, Atlantis Found would have been a good one to make a movie of
because of it's setting. Some movie scenes seem to be over used, so
something fresh would be nice.

"And Al Giordino is a guy who'd do to ride the river with anytime"

That is an expression that is pretty much associated with one really
well known author, anyone know who? Im betting that Justin does.

Im a big fan of his, I figure Im not the only one (I'll give you a
hint, he has millions of westerns in print today.)

William W. Johnstone used that phrase very often. I love his books. He
passed away last April.

I don't know if Louis L'Amour ever used that term...

Yeah, I was thinking of Louis L'amour. I think it is in every book he
ever wrote! haha. There is even one of the Sackett trilogy that bears
that name....

LL is right there for #1 with Clive in my book... I could go on, but
that is for another group... haha

What else do you read other than CC?

It is a curious thing.

Personally, I read my Bible (Im a youth pastor), Louis L'amour and
Grisham are my other two big ones. I own probably 3/4 of the books
that LL ever wrote. Working on getting the rest.

I also like several other western writers as well.

My dad reads everything so when my wife and I go in for holidays for
vacation, I pick his brain as to what was good then raid his book
collection. Its cheaper that way =)

I entirely agree - Louis L'Amour is possibly the very best western writer
ever, and his Sackett series is the best western series, closely followed by
the William W. Johnstone western series.

I read William W. Johnstone, have read all of Louis L'Amour's novels, have
read all of Alistair MacLean's novels, like Jack Higgins / Harry Patterson,
love mysteries by Rex Stout, Erle Stanley Gardner and Ellery Queen and
Carter Brown. I am also a fan of men's adventure books / pulp fiction, and a
long time and great fan of the Doc Savage books. I like the James Bond
novels, but my most favourite next to Clive Cussler's books are the
extraordinary "Modesty Blaise" novels by British author Peter O'Donnell.
These novels were written in the Sixties and early Seventies. Peter
O'Donnell has passed away long since, but his heroine Modesty Blaise along
with knife-throwing expert Willie Garvin will live on. You'all should give
it a try.

Pete

I have tried to download the trailer and all I get is sound no
picture I tried both links that you guys sent me no luck, any ideas?
I have read DuBrull very good, and DeMille is very good too. I like
the ones with John Corey in them I saw he just came out with another
one with Corey in it. I will put it on my list after "Black Wind"

OK I got it, just went to Yahoo movies and saw it there. and I agree
Zahn is a bad fit for Al. Al is a stocky Italian I think that was he
was descibed in one if the books as a beer keg with arms and legs
and just as strong. not a comedy sidekick but a man that would
follow Dirk into a volcano with no questions asked and ready to back
Dirk up in a fight or take the fight himself. but I will hold futher
judgement till I see it on March 25th. but the script is one that CC
did not approve of. but it has to be better than "Raise the Titanic"

I can't believe I forgot James Lee Burke, like the
Dave Robichaux series. Also Vince Flynn and Tom
Clancy.
Joe R Lansdale is pretty good too, but some of his
books are really graphic. I like the Hap and Leonard
books, He wrote one of the strangest westerns I have
ever read, it's called "The Magic Wagon".

A couple of classic things happened in Black Wind, Im about half way through,
but sort of
out of character was Rudi Gunn in a panic and yelling "Get me the vice
president!"

thats all Im going to say, dont want to give anythig away, but I think we all
know who the
VP is according to Kurt Austins last adventure...
