Why do I think, Mark, that the industry did not miss you?
This list hasn't had any tirades on it until just recently and you guys
should be ashamed of yourselves! You should leave the tirades to women! I
have to say, neither of you could qualify for the roll of Dirk Pitt. He's
too much of a man!

Carolena,

Do you know if M.McC. did any performing for CC? Did he act out any
Dirk scenes to convince CC that he could play the character?

I, unlike almost everyone else, appreciates M. McC.'s acting ability and
think that he is one of the few Hollywood actors who can actually play
different characters and not just continually play themselves like
Clooney, Crowe, Baldwin, ect., ect.

I also agree 100%, we can handle small changes in DP if the script is
good and the acting is good.

Keep up the good work,

- Keller

I am sorry that so many of you are so upset about Matthew
McConaughey being cast as Dirk Pitt (R). He was not the first
choice but we now believe that he is the best choice. He has the
fire in the belly; he has earned the role through his growth as an
actor over more than four years since he first began lobbying for
the role and he will be great as Dirk Pitt (R). Now what we really
need is a screenplay that follows the essence of the SAHARA story.
That is most important now! ;)

Hello Everyone,
From New Member,

Here's one for you and since
everyone talking about who's
to play Dirk in the up-coming
movie.
How about: Nick Cage.

Why: Even if he is shorter that Dirk.
His cockyness, the way his past characters
were with women, and the way he drives
cars (fast just like Dirk!).

Later from New member at Rota, Spain,

Warren,
Hey, you know, Nicholas Cage could do the job. He is mature, experienced,
and can carry off a wide range of characters. He may not have the handsome
cragginess I think of Dirk having, but I think he would have been a good
choice. Personally, whoever Clive Cussler has selected to play Dirk is good
enough for me.
He's really the one to be satisfied. His fans will still flock to the movie
regardless who plays the role.
Is Spain going through the horrendous heat wave that the rest of Europe is
suffering through?

I have come to the conclusion that there is nothing we can do to
stop CC from making the biggest mistake of his career by hiring
Mathew Mcconaughey as Dirk Pitt so I think everyone here should try
to swamp his E-mail so that he might get the hint none of his fans
like mathew mcconaughey and that we would be upset if he went

For those of you who are disappointed in the choice of Matthew
McConaughey as Dirk Pitt (R), I am sorry. Mr. McConaughey has the
role. The only thing that will stop him from performing in the role
is if the movie is not made. Currently we are waiting for a new
screenplay which is due Friday. Swamping Clive Cussler's E-mail is
not a solution. This is out of your hands. More importantly, Clive
Cussler has three books that will be or have been published in 2003.
He has a nine or ten city Book Tour coming up in November and
December for the next Dirk Pitt (R) adventure TROJAN ODYSSEY. Then
he leaves for three months on location to assure that the film is
the vision he wants. He will have at least two books published in
2004 and possibly three. He continues to work on his international
hit TV series THE SEA HUNTERS based on his best selling non-fiction
books of the same name. www.seahunters.net He will not read your E-
mails because he simply does not have the time. A lot of actors
through the years have wanted the role of Dirk Pitt (R). For various
reasons they were not chosen or were not available. Matthew
McConaughey has lobbied for the role for more than four years even
going so far as to be in a submarine movie set in World War II and
dying his hair black and going to Mali. I think he has the "fire in
the belly" to do the job and do it well. He may be the Seabiscuit
no one else believed in. I was watching a Biography on Kevin
Costner tonight and no one believed that DANCES WITH WOLVES would be
successful; all the powers that be laughed at him for even trying to
shoot a western. They laughed at him for making a baseball movie,
too, because baseball movies never make money but BULL DURHAM did.
Then he turned around and made another FIELD OF DREAMS and that made
money, too. Have a little faith that the man who has entertained
all of you so well for 30 years will not let himself or his fans
down with the movie SAHARA. Thank you all for your passion and
concern. Clive is not infallible; none of us are. He is doing the
best that he can. And for those who feel it necessary to make all
the nasty personal comments I have been receiving the last several
days, I do not care what you say about me but I do care what you say
about Dr. Cussler. He has been through a great deal this year
personally and he's still standing. He gives to more charitable
causes and individuals than I can count, quietly, and without fan
fare. He is as down to earth as one's favorite uncle. I am very
proud to have worked with and for him for nearly 18 years. Those
who have met him at a book signing will know what I am talking about.

Carolena,
You go girl! Clive Cussler, I know, appreciates your loyalty.
I know how touchable this man is, and how personable, too.
In the past I've communicated with him and he has sent me original script
pages
and also allowed me to name a litter of puppies after his famous characters.
Regardless what we think personally, I admire Dr. Cussler for all he does

I can back up the assertion that Matthew Mc. has
lobbied for the role. For a period of time, my
partner and I had the chance to be involved in
pitching Sahara, Inca Gold, and the rest to Hollywood
with Clive's support.

In the end, he went another direction, and personally,
though I wasn't thrilled when I heard the news that MM
was going to be Pitt, I TRUST CLIVE.

He doesn't say "no" for 25 years to Hollywood just to
sell out now. The man protects the character of Dirk
Pitt like a son almost and I can tell you that he sees
something in MM.

It reminds me of when Tom Cruise lobbied to play the
role of Lestat in Interview with The Vampire. Anne
Rice was mortified when she learned that Tom Cruise
wanted the role. BUT CRUISE SOLD HER. He had the
fire in the bell, as previously stated, to take the
role to the level it deserved.

Do I wish another actor had the role, initially I did.
Hell, I wish I was involved!

But like I said CLIVE KNOWS WHAT HE'S DOING, and I for
one, support him, support carolena, and will see
SAHARA with every expectation that it will be an
entertaining and exciting film.

My lifelong enjoyment of these books - and now, I hope
the films - deserves nothing less.

I will admit to not being thrilled with his choice in MM. But because I
disagree hardly means that I don't believe in CC or that I am disloyal to
him as a fan. If anything my speaking my mind against MM has been out of
loyalty for the image CC has created in my mind with his work. What kind of
a person would simply nod and say nothing when someone that is as admired as
CC is contemplating what may be perceived as a mistake? I won't speak for
everyone but just because I chose to voice an opposing opinion only means
that I care enough to say it. It would be like watching someone taking a
snowmachine over a lake that we don't know how deep is frozen and not saying
a word. You just don't do that. And has anyone considered that the nay
sayers here have as much "fire in their bellies" for DP as MM? I saw "Raise
the Titanic" over 15 years ago and I am still a loyal fan. Regardless of how
Sahara turns out, I'll still be a fan of the characters that CC has created.
I hate the thought of anyone thinking poorly of CC. If I didn't care, I
could sit by and say nothing but CC's work means more to me than that. It's
true CC created Pitt but it's the fans who bought those books that have kept
Pitt going beyond the first novel. I believe CC has never forgotten the
fans which is why he is so highly respected by those same fans. Obviously,
you can't please everybody. I think we all have an idea of what DP is like
in our minds. Humans are funny creatures, my image will differ from someone
else's despite our having read the same exact pages. It all lies in
individual perception and interpretation. Maybe it's the Alaskan in me but
I think of the saying - Opinions are like assholes, everyone has one and
everyone thinks theirs don't stink. I think the one thing we all agree upon
is that we enjoy and appreciate the work CC has done thus far and look
forward to the next adventure, whether or not we like the movie.

And if anything, CC's Dirk Pitt taught me to never just give in. Of course
all of this is just my OPINION.

Audralee, I could not agree with you more. The last thing Clive
Cussler wants to be surrounded with are "Yes Men (or Women)".
However, casting Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt (R) is not
something that Dr. Cussler is "contemplating" as you wrote so
eloquently; it is something that was done in March, 2003. Matthew
McConaughey is Dirk Pitt (R) for at least three movies. Thank you

I got one thing to say. "GROW UP PEOPLE" The movie
as not even begun filming and you are already killing
it. You don't even know if he can do the job.
Personally, I believe he can. Maybe a little younger
than Dirk is in Sahara, but still, "LET HIM TRY".

Although he's not my first pick, never underestimate what
some actors can bring to a roll. Two examples for you in recent
movie history where actors did more than just "pull off" a roll.
Tom Cruise in Interview with a Vampire. Author Anne Rice was
furious with the choice. After seeing the movie she took out a full
page ad in many entertainment magazines apologizing to Tom Cruise
and praising his performance.
For next one, think back a bit. What was your first reaction
when you heard Micheal Keaton was to play BATMAN??? "Huh? MR. MOM?
oh my God what are they thinking!!!" After his peformance there was
only a race for second best.
Fear not CC fans, all is not lost. Lets hope MM does well and
the suppoting cast is chosen well!

Finaly someone who is'nt freaking out over MM as DP
I have been disappointed with the few (the same crowd over and over) who
have
bagged out CC for chosing MM, from what I understand MM has persude the
part for some years
and if he believes in the part so much, he has the heart for it and is
young enough to make himself DP
not just another actor with history acting another part, CC knows DP
better than any of us and he thinks MM is the one for the part, I can't
wait for the movie and will see it with who ever CC chooses.

I think we should give MM a chance. Clive Cussler hand picked him
and he is the one who came up with the books we all love. I'm sure
we'd rather see someone like Harison Ford take the role but he's too
indy and besides with Indy IV coming out he wouldn't be able to do
it. Plus the fact that Cussler hates it when people compare Dirk to
Indiana jones. Therefore I doubt that Ford would have gotten the
role no matter what the fans said.
I do think that we need to trust Clive and hope that the
screenwriters adapt the book with Justice.

Just joined. Nice discussion group. I agree that usually the first
read CC novel is the reader's favorite. Not too sure about the new
series though. Just finished Serpent and wa sunimpressed by the
ending. Will keep on it and see how the rest fare.

Thanks for letting me into this group.

Hi Folks,
New to this group, but have been reading all of Dr. Cussler's
fantastic books since Raise The Titanic,
The discussions of Matt McConauhey and Dirk Pitt reminds me of a
story I read long ago (actually more similar to the Cruise/Rice
story previously mentioned).
When the producers cast Sean Connery in the role of James Bond for
Dr. No, Ian Fleming was reportedly very unhappy with the choice.
However, after seeing Connery on the set and especially seeing the
result on the screen, he understood the producer's choice. As they
say, the rest is history with many Bond fans considering Connnery
the best in the role (myself included).
I agree that MM does not agree with my impression of DP from reading
the novels, but I respect and like him as an actor and am willing to
give him the benefit of the doubt until proven wrong. (Reminds me of
first hearing that Frank Sinatra was cast in the role of Captain
Edward Delaney in Lawrence Sanders' "The First Deadly Sin". I loved
that series and could not see Sinatra in the role. I envisioned an
overweight, Irish Cop, not Sinatra's Italian version. (BTW - it took
me many years to finally get around to rent the movie on video -
Sinatra did a very good job in the role.)

A similar story to Anne Rice when she heard that Tom
Cruise was going to be Lestat in Interview with The
Vampire. She was livid. Until she saw Cruise in
makeup and Cruise became Lestat in front of her. She
was then instantly convinced.

And which is why that although I am disappointed with
the choice from a fan perspective, I am keeping an
open mind.

Not to mention that CC told me that MM took the U571
role to prove himself to CC.

Subject:  Valhalla Rising

Just finished reading Valhalla Rising. Lots of action and overall
found it very good. However there were too many subplots. Like
the Viking thing could easily have been removed. And the last
few pages with the introduction of his children were totally
unrelated to the book and did not fit in. What gives?

To Jeff. Welcome to the world of Clive Cussler. Dr. Cussler is
known as the Father of the modern action adventure novel. Part of
his international acclaim is his intricate plots. Leave the Vikings
out of VALHALLA RISING? Then why would it be called VALHALLA
RISING? Did you read the book? Take your time. These are books to
be savored; not rushed through. Believe me, the plot twists and
turns are worth it! Clive Cussler's books are an E Ticket Ride! As
to the children, some fans balked but when you read TROJAN ODYSSEY
you will understand. TROJAN ODYSSEY, by the way, will be released
November 24th in the U.S. and Canada. Dr. Cussler will begin book
tour at the Poisoned Pen in Scottsdale, AZ at 5 p.m. that day.
Wayne Valero, who wrote the Collector's Guide to Clive Cussler, will
be on hand to sign his books and the artist who did all the art work
in TROJAN ODYSSEY may also be on hand. Book signings with Clive
Cussler are a real party. The book tour continues in Albuquerque
the next day then Clive has a few days off for Thanksgiving. Sunday
November 30th, he will be signing books in San Diego and again on
Monday, December 1st. December 2nd, All Aboard Amtrak to Los
Angeles where one can get up close and personal with Clive in the
Business Class of the train. Clive will be signing books in L.A.
the 2nd and 3rd. The morning of the 4th it's all aboard for San
Francisco in First Class. Three lucky passengers will each win a
$1000 DOXA Sub 300T just like Dirk Pitt (R) (and Clive Cussler)
wear. Amtrak is also giving away a round trip from San Francisco to
Los Angeles (or vice versa) with sleeping compartment for two lucky
travelers! All Aboard! ;)

I just vinished Valhalla Rising and I loved it from beginning to end. The plot
was fantastic. But I would have changed the title, removed the Vikings and
reference to his kids at the end. Also would have explored the teleportation
thing a bit more...just too many little bits left unfinished while others end
too suddenly like the death of the villan. Also Pitt and Kurt Austin sound like
the same character
