In order as the book are published except for Pacific Vortex it was
put out after Night Probe but it is the first story that Clive wrote
so read this first and the rest in order

An announcement will be made concerning this movie before the Cannes
movie festival. Crusader Entertainment will be announceing cast and
director and hopfully possible start of filming with a "shooting for
release" date. The cannes is in May. Lets keep our fingers
crossed that an Unknown will be cast as Pitt so he can make it his
own and not another "(insert famous name here) film"

"Dear Clive Cussler Fans, I received a query today from Crusader
Entertainment that I could not answer. While I realize that this
forum is not scientific it is better than nothing. Crusader is
working on video games in conjunction with the movie SAHARA. They
need to know the following: Age, Race, Gender, what country fans live
in; what languages fans speak. If you could try to respond to this by
this Friday, March 28th, I will forward the information to Crusader.
Thanks a million! You guys and gals are the best!"

Hey all, I don't know if any of you know this, but I happen to come
across a great interview with Clive Cussler. Being a huge audiobook
fan, I've come across this interview on an audiobook site. You can
find the interview at http://www.audiobookstoday.com -- The site
itself is pretty nifty, with some great interviews with David
Sedaris, Neil Gaiman, J.A. Jance, Christina Schwarz, Andrew
Solomon,, Anthony Bourdain, Fay Weldon, Timothy Ferris, Michael
Whelan, Sandra Brown, Martha Grimes, Sandra Burr, and Sandra Tsing
Loh. And also some cool original content by Hal Glatzer, Robert
Parker, Dean Koontz, Janet Berliner, Shirley MacLaine, and Peter
Straub.

Much Obliged,

McConaughey to join Crusader in 'Sahara' project
April 14, 2003

Matthew McConaughey is in final negotiations to star in and executive
produce Crusader Entertainment's big-screen adaptation of Clive
Cussler's 1992 novel "Sahara" for director Breck Eisner. The project
will begin production in the fall, with Paramount Pictures
distributing. "Sahara" is the first installment of the author's best-
selling Dirk Pitt series, about an intrepid adventurer and explorer.
The book centers on Pitt (McConaughey) searching the Sahara for a
toxin that is killing marine life. McConaughey will executive produce
the project with Gus Gustawes, his producing partner in their j.k.
livin prods. There are 13 Pitt books in Cussler's series, and
Crusader hopes that "Sahara" will be the beginning of a franchise
with McConaughey at the center. The actor, repped by ICM and attorney
Kevin Morris, most recently starred in Paramount Pictures' "How to
Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and is attached to star in and produce the
studio's romantic comedy "Dear Delilah" (HR 4/9). (Zorianna Kit)

This is a friggin disaster! Gee why not let richard Jordon Screw up
the role again. McConaughey as Dirk Pitt maybe in Bizarro World! Hell
George Clooney would be better Than McConaughey and he'd suck out
loud! Jackman was perfect for the role. McConaughey is incapable of
speaking without a southern accent Pitt may have scars, a few bumps
and brusies but he does not have a southern accent . What are they
going to do dub this chump? In the word of probably the last film
where the writer had any control.

"It's over Wormer dropped the big one!"

I think it is very typical of Hollywood to take advantage of Mr
Cusslers grief to pull this off. Once again the studio had a good
thing an a Focus group led by mindless 14 year old has screwed it up.
Whats next Jamie Kennedy as Foss Gly and Saundra Bullok as Lauren
Smith.

If we the people who bought the books, made them bestsellers , took
the time to join fan groups don't demand integrity in the project
what's the point of having a group.

jackman is the only one to do this role. matthew is
not the perfect choice by any means.

i wrote to every jackman e-club and asked them to vote
for him on the producer website. i wrote to the local
man here in denver who owns part of the company that
is producing. i wrote to jackman himself via all of
his agents. all to no avail. he went right ahead and
is filming that vampire killer movie which has been
done. i also wrote to mr. cussler and told him all
the above..for which i received thanks and
appreciation...still jackman did not take the role.
he is dirk as far as i am concerned. there is no one
else who can really do it justice.

what i would really hate to see is for dirk to be
ruined again. he is such a distinctive character and
could really be done well by jackman. foolish choice
on his part. mr. cussler even delayed filming so he
could finish x2, and jackman still did not take the
role. this would have been the crowning achievement
to his career and he chose not to take it.

both his loss, ours and mr cussler.

Pamela,
I agree that Jackman would have been perfect, but the reality is he
won't be doing it, so we must go with Mr. Cusslers next choice. He
had the last say-so on who would play the role, so I will trust is
judgement. I do hope they dye his hair dark.

Flintderick/mark
Richard Jorden isn't available to reprise his role, unless god sends
him back. he died in August 30th, 1993 from cancer. As for your
refrence to "people on crack" no we have made a reality check and
understand that if the "perfect" actor to play has decided that he
doesn't want to be associated to this role, so be it Dr. Cussler has
faith in the chosen actor, we are willing to give it a chance. I
also understand your "anger", altho I don't appreciate being on the
receving end, when a bogas rumor that Tom Cruise had been cast as
Pitt, I, too, was very angry and said that I wouldn't go to the
theater to see it. I think the casting of Matthew McConaughey will
prove to be a good one.

Debbie:

I guess you didn't pick up on the sarcasum of Jorden repries the
role. You want a reality check ? Here's one. Matthew McConaughey
blows monkey chow as an actor. As proof I offer " U 571","EdTV", "How
to lose a Boyfriend in 10 days","Contact" ,"Texas Chinsaw Massacre
4", and The John Grisham film with Samual L Jackson that he
mutalated. He is to the Motion Picture what AIDS is to the human
race , a plague! Ok Jackman won't do it fine who the hell heard of
Hugh Jackman before X-Men? No one. Find an unknown to play the role
its not like McConaughey is a draw or anything. Even with the
adorable Kate Hudson at his side people stayed away in droves from
his last film. If not an unknown 5 actors off the top of my head who
would be superior choices.David James Eliot (Jag),Dominic Purcell
(John Doe),Micheal Madsen(Reservoir Dogs),Kurt Russel(Executive
Decision)or even David Boreanaz. For that matter David Spade or Bobcat
Goldthwait would do a better job than McConaughey. The bottom line is
McConaughey can't pull it off the film will suck and 20 years from
now Paramount will be talking a deal with Dirk Cussler on Treasure
with Hally Joel Osment as Dirk Pitt! The circle goes round the only
way to win is not to play. I refuse to see "Sahara" if McConaughey is
playing Pitt he is in a word CREEPY. I have let Crusader know my
feelings . I am getting my friends to do the same. If something is
wrong you can let it go or do what Pitt would do. Fight it!

I choose to Fight

WOW I agree that he is not the best for the role. I always thought
find an unknown for both Dirk and Al, Jackman would have been better
but some actors are lead around by agents that dont know crap, if he
would pick up any book and read it he would see that it could be
bigger than Indiana Jones.Does he know how to read? McConaughey is
better that the runt. I will go see it but I'll be thinking ,as I do
with Indiana Jones would Tom Selleck have been a better Indy I think
yes. Jackman would be better but we'll have to wait and see. he might
do a great job he might not

Over a Movie? Life is to short for all of that anger to be directed
to a Movie. Don't see it. That is your choice, but I will let the
Author decide what is best. He didn't want Cruise so I believe he is
doing the right thing.

Sorry but with everything that has been going on in his personal life
I think this casting was more of a capitulation rather than an
endorsement. Producers rarely give a good crap what authors think
and studio heads think even less of their opinions. If Cussler comes
out and says This is the actor I see as Dirk Pitt I will stop sending
E-mails organising the boycott and endorse the project until then or
shooting begins I will try to stop this Turkey from hatching.I just
find it had to believe that Clive Cussler would cast a guy that was
arrested for running around naked with several male friends while
smoking pot and beating bongos. (Don't take my word for it check the
Austin Texas Police Blotter)

One of the reasons this movie has taken so long to get going is
BECAUSE Clive Cussler has Creative Control over Casting, Directing
and Writing. If he didn't agree it wouldn't be happening! He said it
himself that if he isn't happy with the choice he won't let it
happen. That is what Creative Control means. The announcement won't
acutally be made until the Cannes Film Festival.

movies are the modern version of stories around the
fire...something humans have done since the very
beginning. long memories were what we used to pass
our cultural stories down to our descendants. movies
are the current version of that same thing. they can
be preserved is a different way.

dirk pitt is the epitomy of the Hero is written form.
it is right and just to have it accurate.

I couldn't agree more: thank the Almighty it wasn't Tom Cruise.
Matthew won't do a bad job of it at all, I think. Plus he's great eye
candy. :)

NUTS FOR CHARLIE MANSON! WHAT A HUNK! Matthew McConaughey is at best
creepy looking, has acting ability that makes Vin Diesel look like
Laurence Oliver and for god sake Can't loose that Texas draw in and
role to this point. Pitt is not from Texas! Pitt is not a Blond! Pitt
is not a skinny pot smoking Austin Waste case.Pitt is not Matthew
McConaughey. Once again The Studios have ruined a project before it
starts.Heres an idea Lets cast the American Idol winner as Pitt gee
America already loves him who cares if he's right for the role or can
act!
Mark
PS As evidence of McConaugheys inability to act I offer in evidence
his body of work EDTV, How to lose a guy in 10 days, Contact, The
John Grissham film he did with Saundra Bullock and Samuel L Jackson
and the coupe de gras Larger than Life.

how could a pot-smoking-while-dancing-around-the-house-naked-playing-
the-bongos actor like Matt be Dirk Pitt? I'm not saying he's a bad
actor or anything... but as Dirk Pitt? I don't think so... I know he
is probably WAY too old for it now... But i really think it should
have been Tom Selleck... or... at a stretch Hugh Jackman

Hi everyone

I've just joined this group so I have a few questions. Clive is just
about my favourite author. His were not the normal types of books I
read. But one day I picked up iceberg and decided to give it a go.
To my surprise I thoroughly enjoyed it, and have all his books now.
Does anyone know when his next book is out (does he have a new book,
I'm only guessing). I don't know how I feel about Sahara being made
into a movie. On one hand I'm excited but wary. I have this mental
picture of dirk in my mind and let me tell you it does not look like
matt, who I adore. I just hope that like most movies based on books,
it is not a dissapointment.

AJenkins,
Welcome to the list. I'm curious, who do you think should play Dirk?
I love Tom Selleck, but can't really envision him as Dirk -- he's getting a
mite old!

Hi I agree, I think Tom would have been perfect a few years back but perhaps
not now. ( How old is he, does anyone know). I've been racking my brain to try
and think who would be perfect. All I know is that matt doesn't do it for me.
For one thing he is way too young. How old would you say Dirk is, late fourties
or early fifties maybe? Plus he is supposed to be dark and craggy, (which matt
isn't, unless they plan to use a lot of makeup). I just hope it doen't ruin the
movie, but regardless I will most definately being seeing it. Catch you
laterMandy
