Hi,

I'm a newcomer to this group, and may just be passing through. We've read all
the Clive Cussler books that have been published (we think). My reason for
joining this group as detailed below.

Some years ago, I met this "old codger", who told me he had been in the RAF
during the war. He was posted to an airfield somewhere in Scotland. All the
aircrew seemed to have unlimited access to an old drophead Bently. When he
queried who owned it, he was told that the owner had been killed when his
plane was shot down.
This Bentley was extremely rapid, he told me. Anyway, he had a few days
leave (furlow), and when he returned to camp, the Bentley was no longer
present. On asking, he was told that it had been driven into a nearby loch.
End of story.

I would be interested to learn whether a car that had spent sixty odd year
underwater is worth recovering? Assuming that it is still there? Assuming it
can be found?

A "Land Speed Record" car, called Babs, crashed on a Welsh beach killing it's
driver. It was buried at the site. This was sometime in the twenties. Forty
odd years later, it was dug up again. Tyres were still inlated, and there was
still a smell of burnt brake lining. The car is now up and running again,
although it spends a lot of time on display in the local museum.

Bluebird, Donald Cambells water speed record boat has just been dragged out
of Coniston Water, is it forty years after it crashed at 300mph? All things
considered
it looked in surprisingly good shape.

So, do I want to book a holiday in Scotland?

I think for Al Sylvester Stallone is the only he has the body,
italian like and tallness. But it will be difficult to make him play
the second man.

I know everyone has done this so I will put in my 2 cents. Let me know
what you think.

Dirk Pitt: Viggo Mortensen (He's in Lord of the Rings)
Al Giordino: Matt LeBlanc (Italian, athletic, not extreamly tall,
great comedic timing)
Admiral Sandecker: William Devane (Played John F Kennedy and other
military rolls, smokes cigars and is the right age)
Rudi Gunn: Steve Buscemi (need I say more)
Hiram Yeager: David Hyde Pierce. (long hair and he's a hippi computer
geek)
Eva Rojas: Jennifer Lopez or Roslyn Sanchez.

No way on LaBlanc not big enogh in the chest someone else said
Stallone I dont think I could take his growl every 5 min. As far as
the admiral William H. Macy was is already signed for it last I
heard. I like Yeager, and Gunn. how about Dom Delliwese or how ever u
spell it Burt Renoylds buddy for St. Jullian. Which one was Viggo?

According to Carole Bartholomeaux, who is Clive Cusslers Publicist(?
spelling), NO ONE has been cast yet, NO director has been signed on
yet.Crusader Entertainment has postponed filming until April 2003 or
May 2003, they haven't even told CC anything and they have put a gag
order or Carole's company. So no information is available and
everything out there right now is just RUMORS. So hopfully we (the
fans) won't be disappointed. If anyone wants to know My info came
from Carole at carole@... Visit the NUMA web site at
www.numa.net. Visit Crusader at www.crusaderentertainment.com you
can vote for your choice of who to play Dirk. Also their is a message
board for Clive Cussler at simonsays.com/cussler (I'm known as
pebbles) come by and join in the active discussions.

If anyone watched it I would like your "take" on his answer to

I can't find the "book" link you are referring to.

A search of the site doesn't turn up this interview either.

Have you got the URL?

Vash, when you go to www.cnn.com on the front page there is an

It is starting to look like he doesn't have the "creative control"
that he was supposed to have, while I will see the movie, I will wait
till it is released on video/dvd, if Tom Cruise is cast to play Dirk
Pitt. I do not think Cruise has the "right stuff" to pull this off.

This is a very depressing topic. I am really looking forward to the
new movie and have refrained from writing anything on the topic
of "cast" until now. I had been trusting the fact that Dr. Cussler
has total control of cast approval. Now I'm worried...I know that Dr.
Cussler would not even think about Tom Cruise unless there was some
unknown force at play here. Now don't get me wrong, I think Tom
Cruise is a great actor and has done a great job with the roles he
has been given, but Dirk Pitt is different. You cannot cast a
5'8"
boyish faced actor for a weathered 6'4" manly part. We all have
our
ideas of what Dirk should look like and we have arrived at those
conclusions after reading the descriptions in our beloved books. I
have to tell you that I have always pictured a younger Tom Selleck as
being Dirk Pitt, and if I'm not mistaken, Dr. Cussler
himself,also
stated at one time that he first pictured Selleck as Dirk Pitt. Now
how can we go from Selleck to Cruise??? We all remember too well the
tragedy of "Raise the Titanic" on film. I would hate to look back
on "Sahara", 5 or 10 years down the road and say..."geesh that would
have been such a great movie if they would have only had the right
actor." I am not sure of the time limits that have been set for this
movie but I would gladly wait another 5 years if it meant that the
right actor would be cast for Dirk. I have heard some good
suggestions including David James Elliot and Hugh Jackman, both
smaller names that would allow you to focus more on "Dirk Pitt" and
not the actor playing him. Now please keep in mind, this is only my
opinion but at least take a moment to reread ANY of the books and
after doing so, look up a picture of Tom Cruise and ask
yourself..."Is he even close?"
Take care

I could not agree more having Tom Cruise play Dirk Pitt would make me
puke. Personally I dont like him that much and dont think of him as a
good actor. although I did like him in "Far and Away". The reason CC
hasnt done a movie since the disaster "Titanic" he wanted total
control now he has seemed to have lost that. But like NUMA diver I
always pitured a young Tom Selleck as Dirk. If the little guy Cruise
is cast you have to have the guy that played Minime play Al. I'm not
sure I will see it or not.

Hija all,

I also think Cruise is not the right man.
Ok, he is charming and attractive in a way, but I
don't think he has the rough edge Pitt has. And he is
certainly not as tall. At the moment I can't think of
someone else, although he should be american, like
Pitt.
The movie is on my seeing list, that's for sure.

It says that he plans on retiring. This is because he wants to keep
Dirk's quality high and does not want to get sloppy with his books
(Valhalla Rising is a good example). This is really sad but it says
that he plans to be a creative director for spin-off books that other
writers will do. He said something about one called "The Oregon
Chronicles" which I would love because I am a native Oregonian who
lives near Portland. It would be so neat if any of the towns that I
have lived in would be in those books. Plus it would be cool to see
a Giordino spinoff.
My question is this:
What type(s) of spinoffs would you like to see made about the NUMA

My dad used to say that if you don't want something you have to let
someone know and often. So this is my thought behind doing this. to
keep it up and maybe the right person will finally listen. but if we
have to settle for TC maybe well be lucky and get a better one for
the next movie. I hate having to "settle" because I feel that the
character should be played by someone who would be believeable not
just a "star".

deb

i quite agree about asking often. i wrote also to
this site and asked the members to write to the
crusader site. perhaps your asking will prompt them to
do so as well.

as for tc how much worse a choice could he be. he is
so unbelievably unsuited to play this part--i have not
many words for it. he is just SO not the right man.
it is not just is appearance, his tiny size or his
"star" power. it is the many himself.

While I like a few of his movies I didn't have a "preset" notion of
what the character should look like that he played. He is to "full"
of himself and "pretty". I didn't watch mission impossible because I
didn't think he was right for the part but..... I will continue to
plead with other fans on other sites to start voiceing their
opinions. Clive Cussler should have to concide to "star power" to
sell his ideas.

i quite agree with your assessmentof tc. i encourage
your continued voicing of your views about who should
play dirk. they have already started preproduction
or ratherstarted it just after all my mailings. i do
not know where they are at this point/ i know some
parts have been cast, but not the dirk part.

gotta run--time to go to work. thanks for the mail

-I agree with you Pamala and Deb I just went to the web site voted
and sent an e-mail voicing my concerns over them being stupid and
casting a midget to play Dirk. If there was ever a part for him NOT
to play its Dirk. I hope all CC fans voice your opinuon to Crusade
you never know what might happen
