Totally agree. I'm head over heels in love with the 7
foot tall,225 pound Bridget of Blue Gold, for example.
I wonder if Cussler has a car that would hold her ?

I just finished it last week. And about the history thing, I loved
it. That's one thing I always liked about CC's book. I didn't
realize that he added some history into his stories until I stumbled
across an article in some free newspaper out of one of the Golden
Isles along the coast of Georgia when I lived there. It had to do
with one of the ships...I want to say the Cyclops, but I can't be so
sure, it was like 6 or 7 years ago. But the article was about a
young man who was on the ship and his family.

Anyway, loved Fire Ice and didn't even know it had come out until I
was passing by the books at Walmart and came to a sudden halt when I
saw it. Nearly jumped for joy....I know the one old lady must have
been looking at me funny...<_<...

I love Clive Cussler and I faithfully read every new book. The
history, the archealogy, the underwater stuff- I can never get
enough. I get a kick out of the comic book style characters and
dialogue. At the same time, I believe he's probably the worst writer
of fiction in the history of the universe. He's sort of like the Ed
Wood of novelists- so bad that he's good. Its part of the fun for me.
Anyway, I'm glad to be here writing and reading more about our
heroes, Dirk and Al.

Out of curiosity, what are the things that you think make Cussler such
a bad writer? I'm one who started with the newer books and recently
read an old one, and I have to say that I found parts of the old one
appalling in ways that I don't find in the newer ones. Dirk's macho
sexism, for example, is not so over-the-top in the more recent books.
On the other hand, the basic formula hasn't changed much.

I can agree that his style is certainly schlocky—actually, pretty
cheesey sometimes—but comparing him to Ed Wood is a bit too strong!

I view Cussler's style as a more grown-up version of the Hardy Boys:
main characters moving all over the globe with zero consideration of
logistics or expense, governmental bureaucracies portrayed as glowing
models of super-efficiency, paternalistic authority figures depicted
as above reproach, and a main character who's almost melodramatically
perfect: handsome, knowledgeable, strong, ethical, and ludicrously,
inexplicably rich. You can imagine a little star of light glinting
from Dirk's teeth whenever he smiles.

What captivates me is the exuberant, lusty tone of the books.

Of course, there is always the occasional hilarious description,
which can be either a turn of phrase or an absolutely outrageous
scene. He described Mandarin as something like "that squawking that
passes for an Oriental language, which sounds like a bad record
played backwards at high speed." That made me laugh right out loud.
And I'll never forget the scene where he picked up the wheelchair-
bound little old lady antagonist and chuck her down an elevator shaft
to fall 100 stories to her death. Cracked me up!

I'm about half way through Atlantis Found and it's an absolute blast
so far.

I've been lurking here awhile, and I hate to make this my first

Cruise explores 'Sahara' series

Aug. 20, 2002

Could Tom Cruise be adding another Paramount Pictures franchise to
his dossier, following his successful "Mission: Impossible" series?
Sources say the studio is heavily courting the superstar to come
aboard to develop, star and produce through his and Paula Wagner's
studio-based C/W Prods. a big-screen adaptation of Clive Cussler's
1992 novel "Sahara" for Crusader Entertainment. The project is the
first installment of the author's best-selling Dirk Pitt series,
about an intrepid adventurer and explorer. There are 13 books in the
series, which blend action, adventure and humor. No director is yet
on board the project, and Cruise has yet to make a decision. The
actor is in preproduction on Warner Bros. Pictures' "The Last
Samurai." (Zorianna Kit and Chris Gardner)

First I have to say again that I am a big a fan of Clive Cussler as
anyone out there. Secondly, I'm not an English major and have never
published anything, so I'm really not qualified to criticize the
merits of anyone's writing. But what the heck...this club is just for
fun.
I don't have any Cussler books at home at the moment for specific
examples, although I can think of one: Its in the very first
paragraph of "Vahalla Rising". He opens with a dramatic, mood setting
description of a Viking ship appearing out of the mist, but in in the
last sentence abruptly switches to a more technical explanation. Its
sort of the like the paragraph is flowing along and suddenly runs
into a brick wall. It's clunky writing.
-dialogue: often his characters speak as if they are reading from a
book. He doesn't "write the way people talk".
- He often writes long, awkward sentences. Again, I don't have a book
with me, but read his comment from the front cover of "Raising the
Hunley" to get the idea. Something about an "American saga".
- A little thing that annoys/entertains me: Characters in Cussler's
book never "say" anything-- they always seem to "murmur" or "mutter"-
did you ever notice that? And they are probably the most "sardonic"
people around, based on how many times that word is used to describe
them. When characters do "say" something, they say
it "philosophically" or (arghh!)"admiringly".
- The first time Cussler made a cameo in a Dirk Pitt adventure, it
was a nice, fun surprise. The second time, it was okay. Enough
already.
I'd need a book to really nitpick, but this is the best I can do.
I agree with the previous poster that the "Ed Wood" comparison was a
bit of an overstatement. My criticism isn't meant to be mean-
spirited. It really is part of the fun I get from his books, and lets
face it, we're not talking about "War and Peace" here.

i just read that paramount is heavily courting tom cruise to play
dirk pitt.

does anyone else out there think this is a mistake.
he is too short& it would become just another tom cruise movie
.
and hugh jackman would be perfect.

     i thought clive wanted jackman.

filming on X2 where jackman is now is supposed to be done
before filming starts on sahara.

why can jackman play this part. he is perfect and

  cruise is only 5'7" tall

   wayyyyyyyy too short

and not good enough an actor to play all the subtleties of dirk.

It was so good, I didn't want to put it down. As usual, the

Mr. Cussler's books.

Now I am waiting for Fire Ice to become a paperback.

I lost all patience with Tom Cruise when he horned his way into the
role of Lestat in Interview with the Vampire. How badly miscast could
he have been? That would be like having Mini-me play the part of
Kareem Abdul Jabar. Sting or Rutger Hauer would have been perfect,
but in the end it's all about name-recognition, and Tom Cruise gets
asses into theater seats. Still, it's terribly disappointing.

I think they ought to cast the short chubby sidekick from Home
Improvement as Giordano!

Hugh Jackman is Australian I think. But if he can do an American
accent that's no problem. Mel Gibson has pretty much mastered the
accent, so I guess Jackman can do so.

I think, however, Dennis Quaid might be a good choice, after watching
him in "The Rookie". He is lanky, has fairly bushy hair and, most
important, has a pretty constant smirk, which seems to be one of
Pitt's main characteristics.

Well, I think we have a generational issue. Reading Cussler, I get an
image of Pitt being in his mid-thirties, at least when in his prime.
In the later books Cussler has him beginning to feel his age,
presumably 40-something. An important part of his persona, in my
view, is that he has "been around" and seen a lot. We read about the
wrinkles around the eyes, and expect a somewhat seasoned,
weatherbeaten look. Also, although he's supposed to be attractive,
he's not strikingly "handsome" in a certain sense. Now to me Julian
McMahon is just a kid, too young to be convincing as a seasoned
adventurer. And he's too "pretty", too "movie-star" to fit the image,
as I see it.

I don't know how women see Dennis Quaid, but I don't think he's the
too-handsome type myself. He has a bit of squint around the eyes and,
of course, the smirk. He looks about the right age.

For Loren Smith, I think the choice is obvious. It has to be somebody
who can be sharp, intsense, and professional at one moment, and
sensual the next moment: Michelle Pfeiffer. Doherty and Thiessen are
too young to be convincing as a seasoned congresswoman.
