Ed,

What do you mean he took over from CC???? Are you saying
that Clive Cussler is done writing original manuscripts?
I have to say that since he has been a co-author of many books
the last 2-3 years, I don't find them as exciting as his other books.
The lack the fine little details that are so often in his books....

Ed,

Well, I think I may like reading Rollins' work, also. I did a little
research
and he's a doctor of veterinary medicine in Sacramento. He also has a
dachshund.
VBG One thing I liked about Clive Cussler is that he would often write
himself
into his novels. He also often had a dachshund featured in some of his
books.
He grew up with dachshunds, and I was fortunate to get some original
manuscript
pages featuring the dachshund in one of his stories. He also gave consent
to me
to name puppies in one of my litters from his characters. One such pup
nicknamed
Mr. Clive became an AKC champion.

I also like the idea that Rollins in the end of his books does cite the true
aspects
of his stories via the research he has done.
I think I will like his works. I've ordered two paperbacks.....

I agree with you Jeff you have to read "Plum Island"
first John Corey is a great character but the best way
is to read them in order "Plum Island", "Lion's Game",
"Night Fall" then "Wild Fire" and your right the end
of "Night Fall" caught me totally off guard too. I
have read all of DeMille"s books and he is right
behind CC as my favorite. Jeff you should try "The
Charm School" that was a good read. Some of his books
like "By the Rivers of Babylon" were writen a log time
ago and that was his first book so you have to try
more.
Enjoy the read

Nancy,

What Rollins books did you order?

here is some Rollins info.

James Rollins... how it all began
Written by James Rollins
Is James Rollins the only world bestseller who's also a veterinary surgeon?
Where does an alligator figure in his career? And what do you need to know about
his latest book The Judas Strain? Here, in his own words, are the answers...

It all started when my sister received an alligator for a birthday present…a
gift from her boyfriend at the time. Subsequently and not surprisingly, they
broke up shortly thereafter. She got sole custody of the alligator, which ended
up in a fish tank on my dresser. Her only instruction: “It eats live
goldfish.” Such music to a young boy’s ears! In fact, it was my ticket to
elementary school stardom. I became a third-grade P.T. Barnum. It also
heralded my future career as both a biologist and a veterinarian.

But that’s getting ahead of the story. I was born in Chicago, Illinois, in
1961. My father was a foreman at a Libby’s canning plant. My mother stayed
home and had children…many, many children. Being Polish and Roman Catholic, I
believe there was some requirement: less than five children, and the secret of
Kielbasa would be taken from you. So I was born the third of seven children,
and of that litter, I was the only true storyteller of the family (what my
mother called “The Liar”). My early work consisted of convincing my younger
brothers that the new ventriloquist doll I got for Christmas would come alive at
midnight and hunt for fresh blood…which led to many sleepless night and wet
beds. Or revealing to my baby sister that our family were really
Martians—except for her, of course, as she was our adopted human pet.

I still pay their therapy bills, but it was worth it.

And I did eventually survive childhood. I even got accepted to veterinary
school at the University of Missouri and settled out in Sacramento, California.
I started my own practice and ran it for two decades. I even have the scars to
prove it. But I also could not ignore that twisted little corner of my mind,
that demented little storyteller who terrorized young children. I needed a new
audience. So I began to write. I wrote much short fiction—truly bad short
fiction, stories which are buried in my backyard and will never see the light of
day (unless some future archaeologist discovers them and declares them to be
verifiable proof that this century was devoid of literary merit).

But I persevered (i.e., I wouldn’t take no for an answer). I eventually wrote
my first book, found an agent, and to my personal case of “shock and awe,” Avon
Books bought it. Thus began my dual career—as both veterinarian and author. I
often get asked, “As an author, why don’t you write about a veterinarian, like
James Herriot, or about animals, like Marley and Me?” My answer was simple.
“Not enough people die in those books.”
Presently I do write full time, having weaned myself off my veterinary career.
Though one Sunday a month, I do volunteer my time and surgical skills to spaying
and neutering animals for the local shelter—basically it’s eight hours of
removing genitalia. Otherwise, I continue to write novels that are equal parts
historical mysteries, scientific thrillers, and action adventures. And yes,
many people do die.

And yes, I have dogs…way too many dogs. I blame my mother. For more dirt,
please check out my website: www.jamesrollins. com

The Judas Strain

Deep in the Indian Ocean, a terrifying plague washes to shore--but this is only
a harbinger of the true doom to follow. In its deadly wake, all life on the
planet is threatened.

Aboard a cruise liner turned into a makeshift hospital, Dr. Lisa Cummings and
Monk Kokkalis, operatives for SIGMA Force, seek some answer to the strange
disease. But others see only profit amid the madness. In a savage coup, a
shadowy terrorist organization hijacks the vessel, turning the ship into a
floating bio-weapons lab.

A world away, Commander Gray Pierce finds his Fourth of July celebration
interrupted as a beautiful assassin crashes his party. Wounded, hunted, she
carries the first clue to a possible cure, one tied to a mystery involving the
medieval explorer, Marco Polo.

Pursued by a relentless madman, the pair race to follow the explorer’s
centuries-old trail through Venetian tombs, Byzantine cathedrals, and
jungle-encrusted ruins. Gray finds the path leads to a most unexpected answer:
to a mystery buried in our genetic code, one with possible links to a cryptic
thirteenth-century language known as angelic script.

Yet, as the worldwide pandemic grows, Gray Pierce begins to fear he is being led
astray by those closest to him. Can he trust his newest ally? Or will she
prove to be another Judas?
The Story behind the Story. Where did the story come from?
It all started from a seed of an historical mystery, one concerning Marco Polo,
the famous Venetian explorer. Marco Polo, along with his father and uncle,
spent almost two decades in China. Upon the trio’s return voyage, Kublai Khan
granted the Polos fourteen ships and six hundred men to escort them home. But
when they arrived in Italy, the returning Polos were down to two ships and
eighteen men. What happened to the rest of the escort? Marco hinted at some
mysterious tragedy, but he refused to ever say exactly what transpired…even on
his deathbed. Such a mystery I thought would make great fodder for a thriller.
What if what destroyed Marco’s fleet were to arise again today?

What the critics are saying:
“Rollins has fine-tuned the formula to precision: characters rendered in broad
strokes, punchy dialogue, short paragraphs that propel us headlong through the
story...it's impossible not to be swept up by their energy and excitement”
Booklist on The Judas Strain

“There’s no time to catch your breath...Relentless action in spectacular places”
Kirkus Reviews on The Judas Strain

What the author is saying:
"I agree."

Ed,

I ordered "Subterranean" and "Ice Hunt." He certainly sounds like his

Financial Times asks how IFP breathed new life into literary James Bond estate

Ian Fleming Publications' decision to reanimate the late author's most famous
creation, James Bond, in a novel by Sebastian Faulks to mark Fleming's centenary
next year is the latest in a resurrection trade that has made literary estates
some of the most powerful in the media.

As well as the 14 original Bond books and posthumous adult novels by other
authors (including Kingsley Amis), IFP has reaped rewards with the launch in
2004 of the Young Bond series. These books, by Charlie Higson, have topped
children's bestseller lists across the world and tapped into a new generation of
007 fans - reports the FT.

"We were looking at a younger market because that is very interesting," says
Corinne Turner, IFP managing director. "We are not making Young Bond into films
yet because we wanted to establish them as a literary series first."

It is the ability to control their brand names that makes estates so powerful.
In the Faulks deal the estate will retain full copyright. Though the terms are
being kept secret, the Birdsong author is expected to share royalties and be
paid an advance. Devil May Care will be published by Penguin, part of Pearson,
owner of the Financial Times.

Literary reincarnations sanctioned by estates have made some authors more
prolific in death than in life. Despite her death in 1986, "Virginia Andrews"
has continued to pump out gothic romances, thanks chiefly to the ghostwriting
services of Andrew Neiderman.

Robert Ludlum preserved his literary legacy by preparing outlines for thrillers
to be written post mortem. Eight Covert One titles and five other novels have
appeared since his death in 2001.

Some of the world's most high-profile estates, including those of CS Lewis,
Tolkien and Agatha Christie, are published by HarperCollins UK. Its publishing
director of estates, David Brawn, says keeping an author's name alive is not
about profit. "It's about keeping the flame alive and protecting the integrity
of their work."

But only authors whose names resonate through ancillary media - high-profile
films, television series and computer games - should apply.

The owner of Agatha Christie's rights has kept her in the public eye without
resorting to new books. Agatha Christie Ltd is part of the intellectual property
group Chorion, which also represents the estates of Enid Blyton, Raymond
Chandler and Georges Simenon.

As well as the Grammy Award-winning Poirot television series, ACL has produced
several adaptations of Miss Marple, including the latest version, Marple, with
the British actress Geraldine McEwan in the lead role. It has also branched into
computer games, starting with Murder on the Orient Express.

"We have absolute control over what's made," says Mathew Prichard, ACL chairman
and Christie's grandson. "The most important thing about television is that it
keeps the books alive. We definitely see a rise in sales across her whole list
when the series are screened."

Although ACL has allowed Miss Marple to drop her fusty image, it has prevented
"inappropriate" adaptations. In 1995 the company jumped on an attempted update
of Towards Zero that featured incest: all association with Christie was excised.

Often an author already has an extensive literary canon to exploit. Dahl and
Dahl Ltd, which handles the estate of the children's author Roald Dahl, has
refused to create new books, unlike the estate of Dr Seuss for example.

Dominic Gregory of DDL explains: "It's not part of our plan because his existing
books continue to sell very well."

Among projects the estate has been involved with are the film Charlie and the
Chocolate Factory, which the author's widow Felicity Dahl co-produced, and a
ride at the Alton Towers theme park. "The books are our raison d'être," Mr
Gregory says. "With everything we do in terms of exploitation, it is about
getting people reading them."

Because copyright comes to an end - 70 years after an author's death in Europe,
sooner in the US - literary estates have turned to trademark registration for an
extra layer of protection. Characters, book titles and authors' names have all
been registered.

For dead authors who are still in copyright, trademarking may help estates keep
control after the term ends, says intellectual property lawyer Laurence Kaye.
"If you intend to republish a book that has gone out of copyright, you would
have to do it in a way that did not infringe any trademarks."

IFP has registered everything from Ian Fleming to James Bond and Miss
Moneypenny, so any attempt to reproduce the books without permission after they
go out of copyright would meet difficulties.

Mr Kaye says: "You would have to manipulate the book so that there was nothing
in it that infringed the registered trademarks."

Bond should remain lucrative for Fleming's heirs well beyond his first century.

after finishing Daniel Silva's the Messinger i was floundering around looking
for something to read - sure i have more than enough books that i have never
read to read - but nothing was striking my fancy - i was thinking about one of
the Bourne books since the new movie is out - but after paging through them i
decided not to read any of them.

not knowing what to read i decided i wanted something Ludlum-like - and decided
on the Matarese Circle since i haven't read it in something lie 20 yrs.

it has been slow going - although i have been enjoying it - i'm ,aybe 3/4 of the
way through it and i can't wait to finish it - since i haven't read it in such a
long time and since i have only read it once i'm not remembering alot of what
happened.

the one thing thst i forgot was that it took over 170 pages to get Beowulf and
the Serpent together in a 500 page novel to get after the Matarese.

after i'm finished i will read something else before i comeback and reread the
Matarese Countdown - but i will reread the Countdown too.

now that summer is ending - what all is everyone reading?

from people that have read the newest Bourne - i'd like comments.

This thread is so funny. Some of you may know I raise cocker spaniels and
have for over thirty years. Sold them all over the world and have won a number
of awards over the years. Wish I could send photos man my dogs are so
beautiful really!!!! My dogs have eaten all sorts of books over the years.
When we
have a new litter of puppies I can count on the little puppies to chew
anything within reach. I hate keeping dogs in a kennel so I have all six
running
about. I have a new 6 month old girl Icee and boy she and I had our first
big talk about books are mine only and she has her chew toys. I paper train my
guys so I have to remember not to leave magazines or books on the floor
which is soooooooooooooooo much worse than chewing.

I am reading the Eric Lustbader Bourne book and I am a huge Lustbader fan
but I am not sure I like this one. I finished Lee child Bad Luck and
Trouble it was wonderful but he is getting predictable I hate that. I also
read
the Khaled Hosseini novel A Thousand Splendid Suns while I can't say I enjoyed
reading it I could not put it down. I found the images disturbing at times
and have thought of the book many times since finishing it. This author I
think will be a top seller for years to come. Also read the new Raymond Khoury
book The Sanctuary and I found it not really my kind of book I guess my mind
doesn't like all that science related detail. I like more straight spy, crime,
thrillers. I was really pleased to read the new Kathy Reichs book Bones to
Ashes I really love the show Bones as well. One of the more surprising reads
was The Tenderness of Wolves book by Stef Penney wow I enjoyed every single
page. The setting was breathtaking and rarely does an author create such a
landscape that you could breathe the air and see the surroundings. Forget the
story it is worth the read just for the description of the settings. I am so
ready for a Clive Cussler novel damn I am sick of waiting.
Hugs

few years. We're retired now and we have our two foundation studs, plus
5 more that were born here. We imported a nice boy from Australia
who finished his championship at a specialty with 5 points, and has produced
some champions. Another boy finished from the BBE class and he, too,
has champions around the world (2 in Japan, 1 in Australia.
The oldest is nearly 11 yrs, down to 4 yrs.
They are all old enough to respect books, but I can't get them to accept
the 3 legged Lab next door!!!! VBG

This thread is so funny. Some of you may know I raise cocker spaniels and
have for over thirty years. Sold them all over the world and have won a
number
of awards over the years.
I paper train
my
guys so I have to remember not to leave magazines or books on the floor
which is soooooooooooooooo much worse than chewing.

I am reading the Eric Lustbader Bourne book and I am a huge Lustbader fan
but I am not sure I like this one. I finished Lee child Bad Luck and
Trouble it was wonderful but he is getting predictable I hate that. I also
read
the Khaled Hosseini novel A Thousand Splendid Suns while I can't say I
enjoyed
reading it I could not put it down. I found the images disturbing at times
and have thought of the book many times since finishing it. This author I
think will be a top seller for years to come. Also read the new Raymond
Khoury
book The Sanctuary and I found it not really my kind of book I guess my mind

doesn't like all that science related detail. I like more straight spy,
crime,

Forget
the
story it is worth the read just for the description of the settings. I am so

ready for a Clive Cussler novel damn I am sick of waiting.
Hugs
Terri

now that summer is over and school is almost fully in swing as well as football
season - what was the best book that you read over the summer?

what are you reading now?

what are you looking forward to that is coming out?

i think that the Messinger by Daniel Silva was the best book i read over the
summer.

right now i'm not reading anything - with first grade for my son starting and
getting him ready and homework everynight as well as soccer and Delaware
football and tailgating i haven't had much time.

the Artic Event by James Cobb comes out in a few weeks - the next Covert One and
around Christmas Six Sacred Stones by Matthew Reilly comes out - i'm looking
forward to both.

i also thing that Jack DuBrul has a new Mercer coming out soon as well as a new
Oregon Files.

Just finished The Navigator.

   I have two comments:
   1. I love Clive's books because they are clean of no foul language.
But, what's with the new book and having some foul language in it?
This is the first book I've read by him with it in there.
I think its because its co-authored and not fully written by him.

   2. When did the NUMA Headquarters move to Arlington VA?
In all the books its been in Washington DC.

Other than the language, still a good read!
Got it at a great price from half.com.

Take Care and God Bless,
Warren

Warren,

Both my husband and I have enjoyed reading all of Clive Cussler's novels.
However, since his novels are now co-authored, we don't find them as
spell-binding
or enjoyable as the 'pure' Cussler novels. However, Mr. Cussler has aged,
has lost
his wife, and gone through serious surgery. So.....I think he's earned his
retirement.
I wish him well, as he's been an author who will personally respond to his
readers.
Currently I have 2-3 co-authored novels on my shelf to read.....I find it
hard to
pick them up to read, as I know I will be disappointed....

I really enjoyed Navigator. It was more the Dirk Pitt type of story
than The Treasure on Khan.

Any thoughts on the new book due out next month, The Chase?
