Subject: Robert Ludlum's (TM) The Bourne Betrayal by Eric Van Lustbader
thunderball302

From Publishers Weekly

In Lustbader's workmanlike second novel to continue the saga of Robert Ludlum's
amnesiac assassin and spy (after 2004's The Bourne Legacy), Jason Bourne joins
the war on terror. Troubled by visions of a woman dying in his arms, Bourne
seeks psychiatric help, unaware that the doctor is an imposter who has tampered
with the rogue agent's already messy and incomplete memories. That mental
sabotage is part of a diabolical plan by Islamic terrorists to strike at
Washington, D.C., led by Karim, a human chameleon who has fooled the CIA—and
Bourne—into believing that he's actually deputy CIA director Martin Lindros.
Aided by an attractive fellow agent who manages to overcome her distrust of
Bourne, he races the clock to uncover the traitor within the intelligence
community. Lustbader is less successful than Ludlum in dramatizing Bourne's
inner torment—a feature that distinguished the character from many similar
thriller heroes. (June)

Book Description

Jason Bourne takes a mission to rescue his only friend
in the CIA, Martin Lindros, who disappeared in Africa
while tracking shipments of yellowcake uranium. Once
safely back in America, Lindros persuades Bourne to
help track the money trail of terrorists buying the nuclear
material in Odessa. But once there, Bourne is hampered
by confusing flashbacks of unfamiliar places and events
and he wonders: Is someone brainwashing him in order
to throw him off the trail? Worse, is the man he saved in
Africa really Martin Lindros? Now, Bourne is alone
gathering evidence while trying to stay one step ahead
of the terrorists who won't let anyone stand in their way
of destroying the U.S.

Book Description

Years ago, an ancient Phoenician statue known as the Navigator was stolen from
the Baghdad Museum, and there are men who would do anything to get their hands
on it. Their first victim is a crooked antiquities dealer, murdered in cold
blood. Their second very nearly is a UN investigator who, were it not for the
timely assistance of Austin and Zavala, would now be at the bottom of a watery
grave.

What's so special about this statue? Austin wonders. The search for answers will
take the NUMA team on an astonishing odyssey through time and space, one that
encompasses no less than the lost treasures of King Solomon, a mysterious packet
of documents personally encoded by Thomas Jefferson, and a top secret scientific
project that could change the world forever.

And that's before the surprises really begin . . .

Rich with all the hair-raising action and endless invention that have become
Cussler's hallmarks, The Navigator is Clive's best yet.

About the Author

Clive Cussler is most recently the author of the Dirk Pitt(r) adventure Treasure
of Khan, the Kurt Austin novel Polar Shift, and the Oregon novel Skeleton Coast.

Paul Kemprecos has coauthored all six previous NUMA(r) Files novels with Cussler
and is a Shamus Award-winning author of six underwater detective thrillers.

A master at combining historical and scientific intrigue with cutting-edge
adventure, the New York Times bestselling author of Map of Bones and Black
Order, James Rollins, returns with his most relentless, high-octane thriller to
date--a terrifying story of an ancient menace reborn to plague the modern
world... and of an impossible hope that lies hidden in the most shocking place
imaginable: within the language of angels.

From Booklist
The crack, ultrasecret Sigma Force team returns in another adventure that,
as usual, unfolds at breakneck speed. Sigma Force, made up of former Special
Forces officers trained as experts in various scientific fields ("killer
scientists," one of their number calls them), scours the world for technologies
that could help or threaten the U.S. This time the group's mission involves a
devastating bacteriological plague, a mysterious cryptogram that may predate
humanity, and the deadly truth about what happened after Marco Polo's
expedition to China. After a handful of Sigma Force novels, Rollins has
fine-tuned
the formula to precision: characters rendered in broad strokes, punchy
dialogue, short paragraphs that propel us headlong through the story. The
novels are
like prose versions of comic books, or lightly fleshed out movie treatments.
But this is not a criticism, at least not completely. The books' style
perfectly matches their subject matter, and it's impossible not to be swept up
by
their energy and excitement. Action/adventure fans unfamiliar with Rollins'
work should be emphatically urged to read this series. David Pitt

Ken Follett confirms he is not the continuation novel author

Best-selling author Ken Follett will not be the next official James Bond
continuation author - according to Follett himself.

Responding to a query by James Bond newsgroup regular Mac, Follett said "I
haven't been asked to write a James Bond book, but I'd probably say Yes. I think
I would set it in the fifties."

Ian Fleming Publications previously announced a new James Bond continuation
novel will be published in 2008 by a "big name" author yet to be revealed.

Ken Follett is the author of twelve international bestsellers, including The
Pillars of the Earth, A Dangerous Fortune, A Place Called Freedom, and The Third
Twin. He lives in London, England.

Big Name Author Confirmed For 2008 Novel
21st July 2006
A new original James Bond literary adventure is being planned for release in
2008 to coincide with the centenary of 007 novelist Ian Fleming's birth.

Rights holders Ian Fleming Publication have confirmed a big name author has been
signed.
Press Release

Ian Fleming Publications Ltd have commissioned a very well-known and highly
respected author to write a new James Bond novel. The launch of the new book,
which promises to be a major publishing event, will mark the centenary of Ian
Fleming's birth in May 2008.

Corinne Turner of Ian Fleming Publications Ltd comments, "We are delighted to
have secured this particular author who we have had in mind for some time now.
He is the perfect writer for this project and we are greatly looking forward to
his take on James Bond, in what we are convinced will be a stunning novel."

A publisher has not yet been sought and the identity of the author will be a
closely guarded secret until publication.

Ian Fleming, whose one hundredth birthday will be celebrated on the 28th May
2008, gained worldwide acclaim for his most famous literary creation - the suave
but deadly British secret agent, James Bond.

The Bond novels are, however, just one aspect of a fascinating life that
combined the flamboyant elements of 007 with a unique creativity. Fleming was
not only a novelist, but also a journalist, sportsman, naval commander,
traveller, intelligence officer and bon-viveur.

2008 will be dedicated to a broad range of events and publications designed to
celebrate the life of this literary legend and to examine his legacy. The
programme includes a major exhibition featuring never-before-seen material.
Further events will reflect Fleming's passions and experiences in the worlds of
art, literature, journalism, sport, motoring and travel.

Corinne Turner adds, "The Ian Fleming Centenary presents an exciting opportunity
to celebrate an extraordinary life. Our centenary plans are well underway and we
are sure that there are more possibilities still to be explored."

Ian Fleming published a total of 14 novels (two of which were short story
collections), starting with "Casino Royale" in 1953 and ending with "Octopussy
and The Living Daylights" published posthumously in 1966.

Following Fleming

Continuation novels of Fleming's series have fluctuated since his death in 1964.
Established author Kingsley Amis wrote the first continuation adventure "Colonel
Sun" under the pen name of Robert Markham in 1968. Screenwriter Christopher Wood
then produced literary adventures based on his movie productions of "James Bond,
the Spy Who Loved Me" in 1977 and "James Bond and Moonraker" in 1979 - both well
up to par.

A long break then ensued until mystery writer John Gardner took up the official
job in 1981 with "Licence Renewed" and produced an astonishing 14 novels and 2
movie novelisations in a 15 year period.

James Bond fan turned writer Raymond Benson was the last continuation author,
publishing his first 007 novel "Zero Minus Ten" in 1997, and went on to produce
a further 5 novels and 3 movie novelisations up until 2002.

Back In Control

The controlling share of Fleming's estate was bought back by his family in 1997
from Glidrose, 33 years after the author sold 51% to the Booker Group. This
allowed the group to move forwards with new projects and maximize the the brand.

The last official continuation novel "The Man With The Red Tattoo" written by
Raymond Benson was published in 2002. Benson announced he was moving on to other
projects after handing in his licence to thrill in February 2003. Weeks passed
without official comment until a press release from IFP in May 2003 - which
although intended to read well to Bond fans - actually came off as a childish
and patronizing statement, saying that future projects were being explored.

Nothing but silence was heard from the literary domain until 5th April 2004 when
Charlie Higson was announced as the new writer - but not for an adult
continuation series. Instead, IFP launched a new series of children's books
exploring the character's teenage years.

Original Bond

Commentators over the years have said that many fans of the movies who have yet
to read a Fleming adventure would not recognize the original literary hero. As
with many of the recent IFP projects, they remain committed to maintaining the
conceptual integrity of Fleming's creation wherever possible. Zoe Watkins said:
"The literary Bond is something we want to focus on and any work would have to
be in keeping with the literary aspects of the books. If it was successful there
could be scope for further novels."

Totally two different experiences. They are basically two different
story lines. Not too much in common at all. Similar concept, but the
movie and the book follow two different courses to get to a very
roughly the same conclusion. I can't say I was disappointed, but I am
glad I read the book.

I did not like the bloodbath in the book Sahara.
However, when I saw the movie, I said, "is that ALL!
Where is the rest of it. It seemed like 90% of the
book was left out.

Also, Mr. Cussler describes his characters in great
detail--physical and their personalities.

Whoever made this movie blew it.

Per Cusslermen.com web site:

"A turn of the century adventure novel about a ruthless bank robber,
who leaves no one alive behind robbing bank after bank by non
intrusively first blending into a town, then fading away unnoticed,
therefore not missed by a soul. Justice is pursued by Isaac Bell, a
charismatic detective, wealthy enough to spend his days in leisure, but
too young for inactivity, whose vocation in life is catching criminals
who think their wits give them license to break the law and get away
with it. Cussler is in his best form and setting aside Dirk Pitt, does
not seem a setback at all. Those with a taste for fast cars will not be
disappointed as Clive masterfully shifts to locomotives' chase. Step by
step he tantalizes the reader to an unexpected conclusion."

the movie was entertaining. I saw the movie before I read the
book. Usually I do it the other way around. I liked the casting
other than giordino. I just don't picture him as the guy for that
role. Although I can't exactly picture anyone perfect, but I
pictured giordino a little larger. Not taller. Had I never read
the book, the movie could stand on it's own as a fair piece of work.
I wasn't sorry i watched it by any means, but i didn't go away
thinking WOW. Would have liked to see more of the myth of the Texas
in the movie. Let the Abe lincoln story play out a bit. It is a
little known myth that deserves some time.

half of July was spent reading Harry Potter LOL

I may try to re-read a Cussler book next. But I don't think I ever read
Inca Gold so maybe I should read it first.

Been a long hot summer looking forward to fall.

Terri,

I've read" Inca Gold" and rated the book 3 out of 4 stars. I also listened
to the audio and
apparently liked it well enough to give it 4 stars.

I just finished reading "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix" and it
took a much
concerted effort to get it finished in July. The morning I finished the
book, we rushed off
to see the movie. The movie was very well done and really followed the book
well.

I just got done reading Inca Gold for the 7th or 8th time. There
hasn't been one book that I haven't fallen in love with written by
Clive Cussler. In fact my thirteen year old son has just started
reading Fire Ice and I had to take it away from him so he would go to
sleep tonight (of course he did finish Harry Potter in three days
also). I cannot wait for his next one to come out.

I couldn't put The Navigator down. I finished it in four days. I can
never decide wether the Dirk or the Austin books are better. Both
totally capitivate me from beginning to finish.

Jeff,

I've read one book by Nelson DeMille, "By the Rivers of Babylon" and didn't
care for it
too much. I only gave it 1 1/2 stars out of four. Which of his books did
you like?
I haven't tried James Rollins but will give him a try.

let's see....I have read "Night Fall", "Lion's Game", "Spencerville" (Not
great), "Cathedral", and am reading "Plum Island"..

"Night Fall" had an amazing ending that took me completely by surprise, but
if yo read it read "Plum Island" first .."Night Fall" has recurring characters
from "Plum Island." While the story stands on it's own. I would have liked
to have read "plum Island" first.

Jeff,
Thanks for that information. I have "Night Fall" on my shelf to be read,
but I
don't have "Plum Island." I ordered it on half.com I can get really good
buys on hardcover books there.
(note to myself: Stop building up such a inventory of books to be read!
Haa, Haa!
I feel rich having books around....)

I have to say that since he has been a co-author of many books

Ed,

Well, I think I may like reading Rollins' work, also. I did a little
research
and he's a doctor of veterinary medicine in Sacramento. He also has a
dachshund.
VBG One thing I liked about Clive Cussler is that he would often write
himself
into his novels. He also often had a dachshund featured in some of his
books.
He grew up with dachshunds, and I was fortunate to get some original
manuscript
pages featuring the dachshund in one of his stories. He also gave consent
to me
to name puppies in one of my litters from his characters. One such pup
nicknamed
Mr. Clive became an AKC champion.

I also like the idea that Rollins in the end of his books does cite the true
aspects
of his stories via the research he has done.
I think I will like his works. I've ordered two paperbacks.....

I agree with you Jeff you have to read "Plum Island"
first John Corey is a great character but the best way
is to read them in order "Plum Island", "Lion's Game",
"Night Fall" then "Wild Fire" and your right the end
of "Night Fall" caught me totally off guard too. I
have read all of DeMille"s books and he is right
behind CC as my favorite. Jeff you should try "The
Charm School" that was a good read. Some of his books
like "By the Rivers of Babylon" were writen a log time
ago and that was his first book so you have to try
more.
Enjoy the read
