To my fellow Earth First!ers,

I want you to get off your duff and send money to Andy Caffrey’s Congressional campaign in northern California. He’s been a Green Party organizer for over 30 years, but he’s running now registered Democratic. He’s still just as Green and Earth First! as ever, but he can now actually get elected to Congress. Imagine that… an Earth First! Congressman. How much better can it get than that? Well, Andy’s a friend of mine I’ve worked with since 1985 in Bay Area Earth First!

But what’s most important is that Andy is the only Congressional candidate in the country who is talking about the climate crisis with the urgency we need now. Andy has been the cutting edge on climate activism for over 30 years! He was even the first person to call it a climate crisis! Andy is still roaring about the climate crisis louder than ever!  In 1998 Earth Island Journal published Andy’s warning of the breakup of the West Antarctic ice sheet causing a 20-foot sea level rise in our lifetime. Now he’s warning us about Greenland.

Genetic Engineering is expanding throughout wild nature like an epidemic. When I worked with Andy in the Bay Area and nobody else in our group would do it, Andy was the only guy who would plow into the scientific journals, and had the balls to sabotage a genetic engineering test site for the first time anywhere, which shut down the atmomspheric microbes sector of the GMO industry globally ever since 1987. He kicked ass!

He worked for over a decade to save Headwaters Forest, the largest unprotected grove of ancient redwoods left. He was the first Earth First! videographer and was Darryl Cherney’s and Judi Bari’s organizing partner. When it came time to organize Redwood Summer it was Andy that Darryl and I asked to make the Redwood Summer video and do the national road show. Andy was the only guy in the country out there telling people about the FBI campaigns against Earth First! and telling people Judi and Darryl did not bomb themselves, but were being set up. 

As a Congressman, Andy is especially committed to digging to the bottom of the FBI’s multi-million dollar Earth First! COINTEPRO. No one else will ever do that! That’s worth the price of admission alone!

He was one of the people who brought the steelworkers, loggers, and Earth First!ers together against Maxxam. He put together the Earth First! Media Center which broke Julia Butterfly’s story globally. He told the world about the death of David Gypsy Chain who was murdered by a crazed logger felling a tree on him working for Charles Hurwitz. 

Andy’s been a tree-sitter, been arrested for direct actions, including the 1994 Watts Bar protests against the last US nuke to go online. He is dedicated. He is honest. He’s smart. He’s courageous. He knows his shit. He knows how to communicate. His politics are grounded in science. He’s Ecocentric. 

He’s always been supportive and helpful of campaigns I put together, like Rainforest Action Network, Ruckus Society, Cove-Mallard, and especially now with Climate Ground Zero, which has endorsed him for Congress. He organized two Humboldt County Climate Ground Zero road show appearances in Garberville, including my book tour, to help us raise over $4,000 in two days!

His Congressional campaign is the best hope we’ve got to change the federal government on climate priorities, to stop mountaintop removal coal mining, and get off coal, oil, and nuclear power before it’s too late. We’ve got to help him win! Go to his web site and read all about what he’s done, what we can do, and what he is going to do with us.

And he’s cool to. He sings Earth First! songs at his debates and he might even smoke a joint at one of ‘em pretty soon because he’s a medical marijuana smoker and he’s fighting for federal legalization. He recorded and but out an album of the rally at the 1987 Grand Canyon Round River Rendezvous (I’m even on it singing a couple of tree-spiking songs!). As a UCSD undergraduate Andy took classes, built equipment, and worked on lobster projects at the Scripps Institution of Oceanography and took classes with Roger Revelle, the first guy to measure atmospheric CO2, and conservation biology with Michael Soule before there even was an Earth First!

So send Andy as much money as you can today. I was the first person to endorse him and his first campaign advisor because Andy is now doing the most important work of his life.

If you can help him in other ways, like artwork, computer work, connections, getting the word out to everyone you know, media coverage then do that too. 

Please don’t wait! We need your help today! The planet needs his help too. We can get Andy in because his district is Marin County, wine country, the Emerald Triangle (which grows the best marijuana in the world, believe me), and redwood country.  District 2 votes 4-to-1 Democratic. California now has a Top Two open primary in which all parties run candidates in one race together, and Andy has never been further back than third place out of ten candidates and only a percent or two out of second. There’s no incumbent. And Andy’s decades of activism in the area and his radio shows on KMUD have won him respect and made him a very popular community leader. He put together a winter homeless shelter and saved the lives of three people, including two Vietnam War veterans.

So don’t be a puke. Support Andy Caffrey for Congress. He’s got balls.
