Description

This group is dedicated to the sharing and discussion of positively based training techniques for obedience competition. Our goal is to support trainers as they develop a mutually enjoyable working relationship with their dogs. We prefer to avoid the use of force and aversives in our training. We will NOT discuss or debate the merits of traditional vs. positive training. In our world positive is always better!

This list is NOT for the discussion of basic pet obedience training or behavioral issues. It IS for the discussion of methods for training competition obedience exercises. Anyone with an interest in teaching competition exercises in a positive manner that is enjoyable for both the dog and the trainer is welcome.

Brags are HIGHLY encouraged! We need to spread the word that positive training can lead to success in the obedience ring.

This list maintains a database of titles earned using positive reinforcement training. To have your titles added send your information to Helix at dogteacher@aracnet.com. View the titles by clicking on the Database link to the left. To add your achievements to this database, you pledge that:

> "This obedience title was achieved by training that focused on positive
> reinforcement methods and techniques. This trainer is dedicated to the
> development of a mutually enjoyable working partnership with his/her
> dog in the attainment of obedience titles. This trainer is also
> dedicated to minimizing and/or avoiding unpleasant or aversive
> experiences for his/her dog in the training process."

Re: Disengaging while heeling ?
The "Gotcha" game has to be taught to the dog originally by doing a lot of "hands on" playing. It is usually not a game that you can just do "out of the blue"

Re: Disengaging while heeling ?
How disengaged is your dog? Does he just look away briefly but maintains position or is he completely lost to you? I think those are two different things and
