I recently took a class is how to set up a profitable web site, the do's and
don'ts list.
For those of you involved in promoting web sites, it is very important to
remember the use of "keywords" in your descriptive phrases. They stressed
over and over again, the importance of using keywords to insure the hits or
"traffic" any website needs to insure it is seen. Key words bring in
accidental as well a intentional traffic.
this is especially important if you are involved in a website that sells a
product or sevice. it is important to have at least 8 keywords that will
link a word search to your website. good luck to all of you

As you may have noticed, we've been a bit quiet!

The "new and improved" link has been almost completely
down for most of the week. The company sees us, we see
them, but we get no webpages. It has been a real
struggle to get online at all, so forgive our silence
please.

The WONDERFUL news is that other God-driven projects
like ours are now starting to emerge into the light -
just like we knew they would!

http://mintteam.com/
http://www.prophetic-network.com
http://www.gmrnet.org

As you might imagine, publishing the text on the
Click4africa home page was quite a big deal for us. We
have no credibility with which to make the claims
about God that we do, but I have felt for the past
little while that he would somehow provide us with
credibility through the church and others like us
making themselves known.

If you had any doubts about God really being behind
this, understand when you read the messages on the
sites above that their visions and experiences
parallel ours very, very precisely in important ways.
God is REALLY making a new thing, and it's happening
now. From what I've explored only on these sites so
far, I think it is going to be much more wonderful and
huge than I imagined it could be in the VERY near
future - we're ALL revving up now.

If you see any other websites like those noted above,
PLEASE let us know. Getting in touch with these people
and finding ways of working together will be a very
important part of our success.

The other exciting news I can share is that we had a
wonderful meeting with our neighbors this evening, and
explained to them about the projects we are launching.
They were very receptive and many will probably take
us up on the offer to put their own small projects
into the testing phase.

It was all very relaxed and cordial - after the past
year of them watching this organization go through
many different kinds of crises we weren't sure what to
expect. We know there have been lots of rumors
circulating about us, so we wanted to clear the air.
In general, they were amazed and impressed, I would
say. For us it was yet another step in moving outside
of our comfort zone after being hidden away for so
long. It felt good.

I am almost finished with the email signature
article... stay tuned :)

Much Love, Hope and Blessings to you all ~

Christina

thanks for the update. Hope the site is completely active soon. I am
crossing my fingers for all of you. Need any help in editing, I will be
happy to give it a try. I have one suggestion for setting up web sites.
Make sure you put in "keywords" when people type in search words on the net,
you want as many key word searches as possible to be directed to your site.
So if you are selling african wildlife art, put in descriptive phrases that
mention everykind of wildlife, and african word possible. the more hits you
get on key words the more people that will find their way to the website by
accident. accidental hits are a big part of making a website profitable.

best wishes to all

Weekly Update, October 1, 2002

|/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\|

We've been telling you about how much we have planned,
so now it's time to get to it!

Here at LiA, we are looking at MOUNTAINS of work that
need to be moved in the next 2 weeks and beyond. We
need lots and lots of help mobilizing support and
working behind the scenes. We don’t want to bombard
you, but we do hope you are READY to jump in and get
involved!

As you will see, we're truly counting on YOU to help
us make some Micro-Success Miracles happen, and there
are bunches and bunches of bananas available for
everyone who helps out!

There is a LOT of information in this message. In the
future, the weekly update will include links, and much
shorter text descriptions of the information that is
posted online. Since the rest of the site is not yet
up and running (we're getting there), these emails
might seem a bit bulky for now. Please bear with us.

Please use the discussion list to post suggestions,
questions and requests for clarification. The more we
talk to each other about this campaign as it unfolds,
the more effective we will be!

Here's a brief summary of this week's update:

  New LiA Launch: October Timeline

  Enrich the soil
  -> Micro-BusinessXchange:
     Micro-Success Editors Needed!

  Plant a Tree
  -> Promotional Tools:
     Make a statement with your signature

  Make it Grow

  -> FREE Traffic:
     Win c4a's monthly drawing and get a free ad!

|/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\|

New LiA Launch: October Timeline

|/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\|

Within the next 2 weeks, we will be finalizing the
first micro-success websites. The goal is to have at
least 3 finished in time for the next publication of
Echoes of Africa, which will be on (or around) October
15.

By that time, we hope to also have the
click4africa.com site framework uploaded, the about
LiA section at lifeinafrica.com re-built, and the New
LiA tour completed. (Whew!)

With all of that in place and the October Echoes of
Africa published, we'll start letting the African
market know about what we are doing via all of the
important email discussion lists.

The latter half of October will be spent pumping fuel
into the African Traffic Machine, handling the
response, monitoring the effectiveness of the
micro-success sites, and getting local partners
onboard for November's Uganda-wide Internet4Change
campaign.

|/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\|

Enrich the soil

|/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\|

--> Micro-BusinessXchange: Micro-Success Editors
Needed!

Establish yourself now in an industry that is getting
ready to explode!

If you are a native English speaker with good editing
skills and a good heart, there is a new income
generating market developing online that desperately
needs YOU!

In the very near future, The Life in Africa Foundation
will begin recruiting the first 100 Internet4Change
agents in Kampala, Uganda. These agents' task will be
to begin the mass sale and production of Micro-Success
websites for self-help and community development
projects in Africa.

As the agents collect and write content for the sites
on behalf of their clients, they will need affordable
English editing services. English is not the native
language of Ugandans, nor are English writing skills
emphasized in the Ugandan educational system.

A relationship with a good editor will be a critical
ingredient to every internet4change agent's success.
Chances are, most won't be able to get their clients'
sites through LiA's quality control without one.

The Click4Africa Micro-BusinessXchange is where
Internet4Change agents will be able to find the people
and resources they need to be able to get their job
done. By the time they get started with training in
December/January, we'd like to have the
Micro-BusinessXchange already populated with
experienced people.

As a Click4Africa member, YOU are invited to begin
establishing yourself as an expert Micro-Success
website editor now, while we are still in the testing
phase. As part of the editing team during the test
phase, you'll be directly involved in fine-tuning the
design of the Micro-Success template, and in creating
the model sites that all Internet4Change agents will
follow in the future.

Since we are still in testing, no money is exchanging
hands right now. Nor do we have any clear indication
of how much you might eventually be able to earn
through this opportunity. You will be free to
establish your own prices, however. Your services will
also be rated at the Micro-BusinessXchange, by the
people in Uganda who you have worked with directly.

To get started as a Micro-Success Editor on a trial
basis, please send an email to David Ewaku at
ewaku4lia@... with a brief expression of
interest, including a short description of yourself,
any web writing or editing experience you may have,
and what motivates you personally to want to try this.

David will set you up as a partner with one of our
Ugandan team members, and we'll send you more details
and instructions from there.

Plant a Tree

|/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\/|\|

--> Promotional Tools: Make a statement with your
signature

Later this week, we'll be posting an article to the
list about effectively using one of the simplest, most
cost effective communication and marketing tools on
the Internet - your email signature.

If you don't use an email signature, we'll tell you
why you should, how to set it up, and how to use your
signature to promote click4africa and win bananas!

If you are already familiar with how to use an email
signature, you can start earning bananas today!

>> CLICK!

Include http://www.click4africa.com in your signature
on posts to ANY DISCUSSION LIST ON THE INTERNET, and
win one banana per message!

This offer is only valid on messages you post to
discussion groups. Please remember, it is valid for
EVERY post you make to ANY discussion list on the
internet. As long as the signature mentions c4a, you
get a banana!

Here are some sample signature lines you can add to
your own:

For Mother Earth, and ALL of her children

Your Help is urgently needed!
http://www.Click4Africa.com

Have you heard? God is creating a new thing!
http://www.Click4Africa.com

Reserve your spot on the Digital Bridge!
http://www.Click4Africa.com

TO CLAIM YOUR BANANAS - Send us a Blind Copy of any
discussion list posts with click4africa in your
signature by typing c4aBananas@... into the bcc
field when you send your message. We'll simply count
them up and award your fruit!

In case you are using a different email address than
the one you signed up with, don't worry - we'll track
you down to make sure your bananas are awarded
correctly.

Please note - we aren't the slightest bit interested
in reading your discussion list messages, but we've
got to see your signature to give you credit. If there
is something you've posted to a public discussion list
that you'd rather we didn't see for some reason, just
skip copying that message to us, and forfeit your
banana.

--> FREE Traffic: Win a prize and get a free ad too!

As you've hopefully noticed by now, there are plenty
of bananas to be won by all!

Our first monthly prize drawing will be held on
Friday, October 11. Next week, we'll be telling you
about the THREE gorgeous prizes you can win if you
decide to redeem your banana bunches this month.

common rules of decency apply, of course). We'll also
help you write the ad so that it is tailored to our
subscribers.

NOTE: If you do not own a URL that you would like to
promote, you are welcome to donate your ad to another
good cause, or give it away to someone else who could
use the free advertising. We'll work out the details
after you've won!

Every discussion list needs to have rules so that the members are
protected and the integrity of the list is preserved.

When a group is founded on the spirit of breaking through cultural and
socio-economic barriers, following the list rules becomes extremely
important. Each message you send can be read in many ways, depending
on who is reading it. We all need to focus on finding ways to ensure
that our communication with each other is as effective and fruitful as
possible.

The following are the rules for the Click4Africa list group. The rules
are posted to all members automatically each month. Please take them
seriously, as messages which violate these rules will not be posted to
the list.

This list is moderated by a respectable committee. Any message which
violates these rules will be returned to you by one of the moderators,
with an explanation of why it was not posted to the group. Assuming
the subject of your message is relevant to the discussion, we will
advise you on how to change your message so that it can be posted.

Most of these rules we know you would follow anyway out of just plain
common sense and courtesy, but we need to publish and remind you of
them regularly, just for the record.

For questions concerning anything not covered here, please contact the
committee of moderators at c4amoderators@...

1. IDENTIFY YOURSELF IN EVERY POST.

Be sure to write your name at the end of every message. Be a real
person, let people know who you are!

You are encouraged to use an email signature of no more than 7 lines
of text at the end of your posts.

An email signature can contain personal info, a link to your website,
your favorite quote, or even an advertisement - in fact, your email
signature is the ONLY place you may advertise directly to c4a list
members.

2. NO ADVERTISING.

With the exception of your 7 line email signature, no advertising to
the list members of any product or business opportunity from which you
stand to gain will be allowed. This is a discussion group and
advertisements for your individual businesses are not appropriate.

If you have developed or come across a service, product or website
that you think might be of value to the members, you may post it with
a description of why you think it is of value or interest to
click4africa members and include a link. No personal affiliate codes
will be allowed, however, and no prices may be posted to the list.

If you are offering a deal EXCLUSIVELY for Click4Africa members, you
may post a description of your offer to the list, with a request for
interested members to contact you offlist for further information.
Again, no prices may be mentioned on the list.

If you would like more detailed information than these rules allow
about something you have read on the list, please contact the person
who posted it directly, offlist (their email address can be found in
the "from" line in the original post. Simply copy and paste it into a
new message to contact them directly.)

Never send unsolicited advertising mail (SPAM) to a c4a list member.
Any report of such abuse of our members' email addresses will result
in immediate deletion from the list and cancellation of all c4a
privileges.

3. KEEP CLICK4AFRICA VIRUS FREE

Absolutely no messages infected with a virus will be allowed. We in
Africa know first hand how destructive a virus can be to computers.
Please keep your own computers virus free. If possible, scan outgoing
messages before posting them to the list.

No attachments may be sent to the list.

If you send a message that is infected with a virus, your name will be
deleted from the list immediately. If we delete you because of a
virus, don't worry - we still love you. You can resubscribe once
you're healthy again.

If you receive a message that is infected, please contact the list
moderators OFFLIST at c4amoderators@... right away. Do NOT post
a panicked message to the list about a virus, please.

Do not post virus warnings you receive on the internet to the list.
There are a lot of hoaxes out there that cause unnecessary panic. If
you receive information about a virus that you believe the list should
have, please send it to the moderators offlist for review, letting us
know as much as you can about the source of the information.

4. USE UNIVERSAL FORMATS, LANGUAGE AND 'NETIQUETTE'

Please understand that not everyone has fast computers, and many old
systems in Africa do not handle html. Please post your messages in
TEXT ONLY, and remember that attachments will not be posted to the
list under any circumstances.

Always use a descriptive subject line, so that list members can
exercise judgement about whether or not to read your post.

In order to make sure that the majority of members will understand
your message, please use English when posting to the list.

PLEASE DO NOT SHOUT IN YOUR POSTS. SHOUTING IS WHEN YOU WRITE IN ALL
CAPITAL LETTERS LIKE THIS. ON YOUR SCREEN IT LOOKS LIKE I AM SPEAKING
VERY LOUDLY, DOESN'T IT? On the Internet, shouting in email is
considered very impolite.

No foul or inappropriate language should be included in any message.
We are all loving, caring adults and as such we should speak (or
write) to each other with love and respect.

Everyone will not always agree with each other and sometimes things
will be posted to the list that might provoke you. However, no
personal attacks will be tolerated. (This is commonly referred to as
Flaming) Please refrain from engaging in arguments with other c4a
members, either onlist or offlist. If you have a problem with someone
  on the list that is making your participation in c4a uncomfortable in
any way, please contact the moderators offlist at
c4amoderators@... to discuss alternatives for addressing the
issue privately.

5. KEEP THE DISCUSSION ON-TOPIC

This is a discussion list about "finding your own way" on the internet
and integrating social responsibility and global awareness into your
online activities and image. While this topic is very broad,
click4africa narrows the subject matter by focusing specifically on
how you can participate in providing sustainable, mutually beneficial
people-to-people support to agents representing self-help and
grassroots community development projects in Africa.

Please refrain from airing your personal opinions and complaints about
society at large on the list. This list is not about the problems that
divide us, but about concrete solutions that can unite us. We need
your love!

Sometimes something someone says will prompt you to want to share
emotions or common opinions with an individual list member that do not
belong on the list. We hope that c4a will be a place where you'll make
long-lasting online friends and develop a variety of interesting
partnerships. In the interest of keeping the volume of list mail down
for everyone, however, please keep personal mail off of the list.

When replying to a message, please ask yourself whether your reply is
of benefit to the entire list, or to only the person who sent it. If
your reply is only really intended to the person who sent the message,
find their email address in the "from" field of the original post, and
send your message directly to them offlist. This will reduce the
burden on all of our inboxes as the list activity picks up.

One or two word replies, such as "me too" or "I agree" will not be
posted to the list. Unless you have something further to add to the
discussion, please send supportive messages like these directly to the
person you agree with.

Do not post jokes of any kind to the list, as they "usually" make fun
of a particular group of people. Rather than argue over which jokes
are or are not acceptable, let's just find other ways to have fun.

Do not forward chain letters, sensational stories, or anything else
that anyone has forwarded to you along with everyone else in their
address book. Time spent downloading and deleting useless email is
very expensive for those of us here in Africa. By keeping the list
focused, we can help to ensure high value for the money all of our
African members must pay to be online.

6. DO NOT GIVE WHAT YOU ARE NOT WILLING TO GIVE FREELY

The beauty of an active discussion list is that it provides a place
for the conception, birth and sharing of new ideas between ordinary
people.

Unfortunately, in a world dominated by litigation, ownership and
copyright laws, some of the most successful discussion list owners
have faced legal charges from people who claimed that other list
members had stolen and capitalized on their ideas.

On this list, we recognize that there is only ONE owner of all ideas,
and it is none of us here on Earth. The click4africa discussion list
archives are public, for the entire world to see. We warn you now
that any and every wonderful idea (or even mediocre idea) you post is
at a very high risk of being used for the advancement of someone other
than yourself.

As a c4a participant, you agree to forfeit the copyright on all of
your c4a list messages to the Life in Africa Foundation. The Life in
Africa Foundation grants free republication rights of archived list
material to any and all who wish to further the ideas discussed on
this list in any commercial or non-commercial way.

If a lack of copyrighted protection of your ideas is a concern to you,
please unsubscribe now. You are in the wrong place.

7. AIR YOUR CONCERNS APPROPRIATELY

In case of any question about these list rules, their interpretation,
or their application, please contact the committee of moderators at
c4amoderators@....

Under no circumstances should any list member attempt to discipline
another member for breaking the list rules. That is what the
moderators are for. If you see a blatant violation of the list rules
that appears to have gone unaddressed by the moderators, feel free to
air your concerns to the moderators directly.

Our objective is to make click4africa a pleasant and fruitful
experience for everyone, not to bind you with unreasonable rules. If
you have a complaint, make a suggestion on how we can make it better!
We'll look forward to hearing from you. "We will ALWAYS be glad
to hear from you."

Sincerely,

Hi Joseph!

So glad you're here!

For the benefit of the rest of the list, Joseph has
been a very loyal LiA subscriber for years. We have
spoken by phone, and exchanged email, but never
actually met.

Joseph - it's time we changed that, don't you think?

Please contact Milly at sekasi4lia@... to
arrange an appointment to meet us in Kamwokya. I would
really like to find out more about what you are doing
in the north, because that is an area where I strongly
believe we can play a major role with click4africa.

There is so much that the world needs to know about
what is happening there in Northern Uganda, and so
much that people can do to help people there help
themselves. We WILL do something, before another
generation of kids grows up in that awful Hell.

Please come see us, Joseph. I am sure there is a lot
we can do together.

My best,

Christina

I wrote the following description of LiA4Uganda.com

find it useful in understanding how some of the pieces

together.

Hope this helps.

=========

LiA4Uganda.com is the online "Micro-Impact Market"
that will be home to Ugandan Micro-Success and
Micro-Artisan websites.

Each 5 page site is a human interest report about a
small family or community development project,
including information about their culture, lifestyle,
wisdom and accomplishments. Kind of like the borrower
stories at lifeinafrica.com used to be, but more
interesting and detailed.

The Micro-Artisans sites won't be coming online until
after the new year. Right now we are finalizing the
first Micro-Success test sites, which will be uploaded
to LiA4Uganda within the next 2 weeks or so.

The sites each contain a 3 phased project plan, and
are enabled to receive direct contributions. The URLs
of the micro-success sites will be blasted all over
the internet through the team mobilized at
http://www.click4africa.com and the "African traffic
machine" we've been building over the past several
months.

Phase by phase, as the resources for the Micro-Success
projects are raised, photos showing the implementation
of these small projects will be posted online. These
will be the "Micro-Success Miracles" that we sell to
the local press. On the Ugandan market, we are going
to be pitching Micro-Success nationwide, and in direct
competition against the microfinance industry.

Micro-Success is "better than a loan" because the
interest free money comes directly to the project
owner into a savings account, the project owner is
encouraged to focus on results rather than repayment,
and the website doesn't have to be used to solicit
financing only. Some of our clients need equipment,
others need volunteers. Still others just need advice,
or have their own objectives for wanting to get
involved in this.

Once there are results to show on the initial test
sites, and we've ironed out the operational kinks,
we're launching Micro-Success on the local market
(est. mid-november).

Ugandan clients will be able to pay for this service
through their Internet4Change agent, who is the one
who converts their 3 phased project and whatever else
they have to say into a micro-success website.

The certified Internet4Change agent is like a LiA
volunteer of the past, but now he is completely mobile
and can work from any internet cafe in Uganda. He
charges his clients (who don't have to learn the
internet at all, if they don't want to) fees that are
well below normal micro-loan payments, and pays LiA a
nominal rental fee for the space his clients use at
the LiA4Uganda Micro-Impact Market. We all work on
volume, and recurring monthly income from clients who
are getting a great service for very low web-hosting,
design and marketing fees.

The Micro-Impact Market will also include local
merchants who accept electronic payments, so that the
money raised by the Micro-success clients can be
funnelled directly to project-related expenses without
withdrawing the money into local currency.

LiA4Uganda will also have very interesting Relevant
Resource directories, designed to serve the ordinary
Ugandan in the context of his/her economic realities
and internet usage possibilities.

Dear Philemon

Greetings from the Pearl of Africa. We are very pleased to hear from you. Welcome to C4A list. I appreciate the fact that you joined us to help put Africa back on track.

You expressed your 'confusion'  about what you to stand to benefit/ gain by being a member. Before I tell you more, for purposes of enlightenment, have a good look at our overview page: http://lifeinafrica.com/tour/

As you will notice, being a member of C4A puts you and your people in a unique 'present & future' opt-in stream of Life in Africa Foundation programs, projects, affilliates and achievements. Every thing we do is 'related' and is designed to be replicable.

You get to enrich your life and that of others you love, by learning to acknowledge that you can do more for yourself and your people if you adopted! You will learn to share numerous 'help-the-people' mechanisms to liberate ourselves from the uncertainty of poverty, illiteracy and ignorance.

Africa is blessed with abundant resources but history shows we have consistently failed to harmonise the way we share and utilize them. Instead, for centuries we blamed slavery and attacks by 'foreign' forces dating thousands of years back for our failure. Africa needs HEALING!!!

Africa needs, from me, you and every body else, a chance to make presence on the global scene, the while emancipating her people from their previous misery and entrapment. Soon we launch Micro-Success.com. Initial client sites are being finalized. LOOK OUT!

You will further understand more why C4A is a 'Pro-Africa' platform. C4A is the global assembly of 'Pro-Africa' friends who know Africa is part of the Whole World and want to help it achieve equal status. Africa needs to restore her glory and significance. It starts with us...with me and you!

I hope this is a brief explanation of how to 'begin' to benefit from being a member serves to clear the confusion. We will be glad to explain further, any more quwestions trhat you may still have. You will 'free your mind!', thats another benefit. Lets talk more soon my brother!

God bless you!

:: Hi Click4Africa -
:: From today forward,
:: the following is going

:: message for people who
:: join click4africa. They'll
:: receive the message as
:: they are subscribed to the
:: discussion list. You are
:: receiving this information

Welcome to Click4Africa from all of us here at LiA Uganda! We are so thrilled to have you aboard this exciting team.

THE PURPOSE OF THIS LIST

While the Click4Africa website and members section are being constructed, the click4africa (c4a) discussion list is the main tool we'll be using to convey important information about our programs and member benefits.

The top 5 most important things you need to know are included in this email.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
CONGRATULATIONS!!
--> Just for signing up for Click4Africa, YOU'VE WON a FULL BUNCH of bananas!
That means you'll automatically be included in our next monthly drawing of FABULOUS PRIZES from the LiA Collection of handmade Ugandan artisan products!
Keep reading for further details!
(NOTE: You must be subscribed to the c4a list at the time of the drawing in order to win.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

1. MICRO-SUCCESS MIRACLE CAMPAIGNS

The main purpose of the c4a list is to discuss ways in which YOU can participate in creating some Micro-Success Miracles between now and December 2002.

What that means in simple terms is that - together - we are going to deliver Micro-Success website addresses into the inboxes of hundreds, thousands, eventually millions of email users around the world, and get thousands of people looking at Micro-Success pages on a daily basis, through every online and offline method we can collectively think of.

Each Micro-Success site is a 5 page human interest report on an individual in Uganda who has a viable self-help or community development project that is in need of specific resources.

The Micro-Success site outlines each client's three phased project plan, and offers cultural and socio-economic insights into the project's local operating environment. While the sites enable the projects to receive direct financial contributions via e-gold, Micro-Success also enables them to solicit advice, volunteers, equipment, or even orders for artisan products they make as a side business.

Your objective as part of the click4africa team is simply to tell as many people as possible about these websites (and/or about click4africa), so that the projects can get the resources they need to make their own miracles happen.

We provide the instructions, stories to share, pre-written ads, and lots of other very simple tools and ideas to help you in this mission. Each time you use one of these tools to benefit click4africa or a micro-success site, you'll earn a banana!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AHAA!! I AM BEGINNING TO SEE!
--> I Share the URL of a Micro-Success site that inspires me. The project gets exposed to someone (or many) who might be in a position to help, and I win a banana for the good deed I've done!
Sounds simple, and easy!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

2. DISCUSS AND WIN!!

In addition to explaining our ideas about how you can help to click Africa out of poverty and illiteracy, we also need your input on the list, about anything YOU see that you or others can do to achieve the c4a objectives.

Since we are all posting from different perspectives and parts of the world, we would ask you to please take your own crazy ideas as seriously as we do - don't be shy to speak up and share your point of view!

In fact, each time you establish yourself as a c4a team player by contributing to the dynamic exchange of ideas on the list, you win a banana!

Keep in mind, however, that the list is moderated, and we do have rules that everyone needs to follow if we're going to be able to harvest all this fruit.

Those rules will be delivered to your inbox soon, and will be posted to the list once a month as a reminder to all participants.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
DID YOU HEAR THAT?
--> When I post to the c4a discussion list I win a banana!
Could this be ANY easier?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

3. WHAT CAN YOU DO WITH BANANAS?

There are an average of 20 bananas in every bunch, so the first thing you need to know is that you actually can't do very much with a single banana.

When you've got a whole bunch of 20 bananas, however, things start to get exciting.

Each month, we'll be holding a drawing for a number of prizes that we'll tell you about in advance. For each bunch of bananas you've won, you'll have a chance to win a real prize. (Don't forget, you've already won a whole bunch just for signing up!)

You can decide to trade in your banana bunches for chances to win in that month's drawing, or you can wait and redeem your bunches in a future drawing.

We might as well tell you right now that the prizes we've got in the works for our DECEMBER 2002 drawing could definitely make it worth your while to wait... (If you ever dreamed of traveling to Africa, bananas could be the ticket!)

Full instructions on how to check your banana balance and redeem your bunches will be posted to the list prior to each monthly drawing.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
GO TO AFRICA ON A BUNCH OF BANANAS?
--> When I promote click4africa or a Micro-Success site 20 times, or if I post to the c4a discussion list 20 times, I could win a chance to travel to Africa!
Now that IS exciting!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

4. MANAGING YOUR EMAIL

Despite our best intentions to keep the volume of discussion at a reasonable level, you may get more mail than you expect.

Most of that, we hope, will be wonderfully delightful mail you'll be overjoyed to receive.  Some of it, however, will be mail that doesn't interest you, and some may be email from someone who accidentally sent a reply to the list that was intended only for one other person.

If you're feeling overwhelmed, take a deep breath, then look at the subject line to help you see if an email sounds like something you want to read.  If not, remember that the "Delete" key is your friend. :)

Where possible, please remember to use a clear subject line in your own posts, so that other people can get an idea of what it's about in making their own delete decisions.

If the mail ever gets to be too much, you can switch to the daily digest version. This sends you ONE email per day, with all the emails of that day in the one message. You can get more info about switching to the digest version at the "edit my membership" link on the click4africa page at yahoo: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/click4africa/

Another useful way for managing your list mail is to set up a filter in your email program that automatically files the incoming mail from this list into a folder for you. If you don't know how to do this in your email program, try asking the list for assistance. You'll win a banana for posting the question, and someone will be glad to help if they can!

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
REVOLUTIONARY!
--> I win a banana even when I ask for help!
How can these people afford to be so generous??
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

5. RELATED LINKS

There's a lot happening at LiA right now which we would encourage you to take the time to learn about at your leisure. We don't want to clog the list with all of this, but if you are working with us then these links contain info that you might want to keep up to date on.

Hi Robert,

Yes, David is describing our computers. What he forgot to also mention is that we've got viruses on all of them too.  We try not to work with attachments at all any more, and we've gone to an all web-based email management system to get away from the dangers of outlook. But the fact is, our machines are sick.

The GREAT news is that our prayers for a new internet link have (hopefully!!) been solved today! Our boy genius David sold a new local ISP on giving us an amazing deal - if they deliver on their promises, we're going to save $100 per month and get more bandwidth than we have now. They are going to give us 2 weeks for free to see if the same interference we've been experiencing continues under their management.

Please keep your fingers crossed for us everyone! The interference with our internet link has been one of our most frustrating obstacles for over a year now - get that solved, and we'll be ready to fly!

I'm working on a bunch of BANANA stuff for you folks - hope to get it to you later today, so be on the lookout.

My best,

Christina

Hi Robert

Yes that is what we have down here. They have done
well considering everything they have been through.
The biggest disappointment was when the hard disk of
one of the newer ones went down.

You will forgive me if I write so much about the
computers, the truth is that I just like them and that
is how I know how to manage to keep them up.

I do not have a formal education on computer
maintenance and just figure problem solutions as they
come. Most of the time it works but I will be the
first to say I need help.

I will stop here because I think I have already gone
beyond your question.

David

Thanks Fairygirl!

A little late? Don't worry, my dear. If there is one thing this world needs to do to become sustainable, it's slow down. Abdul and I have decided to reject the concept of internet-time all together, since neither of us sees how it can be practical in the African context.

I't never too late for a good deed. Haven't read the re-write yet, but the voice is still mine - David didn't even notice you'd edited.

Thanks again - and please tell us your name and more about yourself!

Its a little late i know, but it is rather lengthy so i just made some revisions, hope this helps! I know quite a bit about Africa, but i always  want to know more!

Why Click 4 Africa?

Just about everyone on the internet these days is aware that the quest for website traffic is an important part of doing anything on the web.

If you own a website, you want traffic, or visitors. Now that you have put so much time, energy and money into building your site, it does you no good until the masses see it, have a chance to get to know who you are, and maybe decide to buy from you if you are selling something.

One wrong move, and you could end up with a sign up form for a lifetime's supply of unsolicited email staring you in the face, when all you wanted was that free screensaver.

It's a real jungle out there!

And if you happen to be someone who doesn't speak English as a native language, and isn't already sensitized to the typically American style of intrusive commercialism, getting lost in the internet jungle can be disastrously expensive.

Imagine for a moment that you are a website owner in someplace like... Kampala, Uganda (East Africa).

If you are wealthy enough to own your own computer, then you'll need to pay $50 - $250 per month for an internet connection, plus a local phone bill of several hundred dollars if you use a dial-up modem. A radio link avoids the phone charges, but often times out and requires a $2,000 start-up investment in equipment.

If you are an ordinary, normal person in Kampala, you don't own your own computer or internet connection. You might be lucky enough to have a relative with an online connection at work who can check email for you, but if you want to be online yourself you need to pay for time in a web cafe.

The current rate in Kampala for surfing is about $0.03  ($US) per minute, or about $1.65 per hour. Doesn't sound like much, until you remember that we started out talking about a website owner.

Most website owners I know online spend at least 20 hours per week promoting and maintaining their websites. For the Ugandan in Kampala, that means a monthly investment of at least $130 per month, plus bus fare to get to the webcafe.

In Kampala, Uganda, the average monthly salary of an employed person is approximately $130 per month... So I guess Ugandans had better keep their day jobs until they save enough to get started online, huh?

To make matters worse, once our African friend has the money to get online, he is doomed to the bland world of free traffic building techniques. This time it's even more complicated. Our friend in Uganda doesn't HAVE a way to pay for any online promotional help, even if he had unlimited funds in his pocket!

- He doesn't have a credit card, because Ugandan banks don't issue them.

- He doesn't have a confirmed US or European bank account, so he can't deposit or withdraw money through PayPal.

- He can't accept credit cards because Ugandan banks don't offer merchant accounts. He could hire a credit card processing company, but once again, he has no way to pay them.

If our friend does arrange a way to receive payments by check from a credit card processing company (or one of the many income generating affiliate programs), he will be subject to a $50 fee to have it converted to Ugandan Shillings that can actually pay for his children's schooling.

Is it no surprise that there are very, very few (if any) e-commerce sites of African origin. At a national and regional level, brilliant minds have been working to design systems that are practical for Africa's people. But the life that the buying and selling of goods and services breathes into the Internet for people in e-commerce enabled countries, simply doesn't exist for the average African surfer.

There is currently no economic incentive to warrant the enormous monetary investment in expensive online time that building and promoting a website takes. And so, creative, spirited, beautiful Africa is not building itself into our new online society.

That's not right. Especially since it all boils down to something as simple as website promotion, and anyone anywhere can easily help with that!

That's why Click4Africa was created.

Our mission is to mobilize an international army of people who are willing to help promote some very special African made websites online. The sites have been designed to include republishable, interesting content about contemporary African culture and wisdom that is adaptable to any number of contexts on the internet.

From simple things like using a signature in email discussion lists, to more complex ventures like starting your own topic-driven website and ezine with African content, Click4Africa will walk participants through the basics of painlessly integrating the promotion of African poverty alleviation into virtually every kind of online activity.

We'll also be using Click4Africa as an interactive platform for training Ugandans in how to get started finding themselves on the web.

If they know the kind of help they really need online is available when they get there... I bet they'll come!

Hi William

Hope you are well? The computers are all less than 64
MB and do not have a speed of more than180 MHz.

We have six computers but unfortunately part C: (we
had partitioned the hard disks) of one of our newer
computers crushed. This has rendered that computer
unusable for now.

Most of the computers were built for Windows 95 and
98. The two slightly new ones had Windows millennium
but this gave us real problems and we had a real bad
virus attack that destroyed most of the files on
millennium. We therefore upgraded all the computers to
windows 2000 professional.

As to getting computers out there should be a way as
some people import computers from the US to Uganda.
The problem we foresee would be the costs of getting
the computers transported here. There is a new law or
something that was adapted by the US Gov called AGOA
(African Growth Opportunity Act), or something like
that.

Is there anything you would advise us to do with the
spoilt hard disk, because the other two partitions are
still active and functional but it cannot start up on
its own. It is a newer computer compared to the rest.
It is 10 GB and we need the computer running.

The hard disk of the other new computer makes a lot of
noise and has slowed down its operations. It has
63.333 RAM and a 10 GB hard disk. It like the old 32
RAM machines.

Thank you for offering to help it is truly
appreciated, we need all the help we can get and yours
comes at a very crucial moment.

Hi Aunt Cher!

Coming soon: "How it works"

Hopefully things will start to hang together. The why is important for understanding how it works, so be patient please . There must be a reason why this is all coming together in the odd way that it is.

A comment about my weaknesses in writing these days... Unfortunately it does absolutely no good to tell me to be concise. I know it's a problem, and it's actually because the vision is based on so many seemingly unconnected ideas. It is hard for me to get enough perspective on it all to be able to put it into "concise" sentences. I am doing much better than I was, I think. I've learned that making it real is not something I can do alone, though.

What I would dearly love is more specific feedback on unnecessary paragraphs and words that can be cut out.  Any good editors in the group?

Again, thanks for your patience as we continue to pull this together.

Hello, let me introduce myself, I am Christina's Aunt.  My name is Cherrier.  I have read the article.  It is not clear to me just exactly what "POSITIVE" steps click4africa hopes to accomplish.  I am now very informed as to the difficulties encountered in Uganda as a web surfer.  But as still unsure what it is click4 africa hopes to accomplish and how.

A vision starts with a single thought, many times in our effort to enlighten others, we lose the single thought in the very telling of the story.  Be clear, be concise and above all make it real, not just words on page.  Unfortuantely most of the world has become de-sensitzed to the suffering of others, you need to get our attention! and you need to keep our attention!.

My personal opinion is to wrtie the article from a very positive upbeat perspective, do not depress your readers or play on their pity, pity is very scarce right now.  Get them motivated, and excited and enthusiastic.  This is just one persons opinion, and only food for thought.  love to all

Yes, of course I remember you. Thanks for being here!

You mention that you have five old computers. I live in America
and am a common man myself with very little but I build computers and would
like to know what speed are your computers and how much ram they each have.

You'll have to talk to David about that. He's our tech man.

I would love to contribute a few computers but I would need some help as
the USA gov. do not want computers to leave the country and I do not know how to get around that problem.

I don't think there's a problem on the US side with the destination as Uganda. I know others who have imported computers from the US, soshouldn't be a problem.

I have a contact named David Stern who would know the answers to the questions surrounding importing hardware.  He has been trying to import large numbers of used computers from Europe under a project called UgandaConnect.  Lately, he's been working on what I understand to be a pretty high level "behind the scenes" task force to get some important restrictions and taxes on internet-related imports into Uganda lifted.

I'll send him a copy of this mail and see if I can get him to join us... I need to update him on developments here anyway.

Christina one thing I would like to say is that there use to be a white
fellow with you named David I think, that use to travel around MamaAfrica
and take pictures and report on his travel. To honest with you I did not
like that guy too much because as a black American I saw disparaging remarks
in each one of his posts. Maybe it came from not having to suffer in his
life or just not caring about people.

You're probably referring to Mark Davies. Actually, nobody ever worked for LiA in the capacity you assume; we were dependent on people who did have material to contribute it to the site.

When I was first building the very first, very amateur lifeinafrica.com, Mark contacted me out of the blue. He'd met someone on a bush taxi in Burkina Faso who had told him about me. He saw something in what I was trying to do, and gave me the free right to use any and all of the content he'd created during his trip, which included 5 countries.

That allowed us to present content - especially in the popular African Dream Gallery - from more of Africa than we could possibly cover on our own. Mark's photos are astounding, so it was very generous of him to donate their use to LiA. Later on, when people contacted him to republish the photos,he even made it a requirement that they had to make a contribution to LiA.

In Mark's last letter from West Africa, he talked about his hope to someday go back to Ghana. He did, and has since founded busyinternet, which is a powerful new internet-center concept for Africa that has it's debut in Accra. You can check it out at www.busyinternet.com .  Mark was quite the boy genius in the early days of the internet in the UK and New York. I'm thrilled to see that he's now putting his talents for mobilizing resources to use for innovation in Africa.

William, thank you again for joining us, and I'll see what we can do about answering those questions!

Christina

Hello, let me introduce myself, I am Christina's Aunt. My name is Cherrier. I
have read the article. It is not clear to me just exactly what "POSITIVE" steps
click4africa hopes to accomplish. I am now very informed as to the difficulties
encountered in Uganda as a web surfer. But as still unsure what it is click4
africa hopes to accomplish and how.

A vision starts with a single thought, many times in our effort to enlighten
others, we lose the single thought in the very telling of the story. Be clear,
be concise and above all make it real, not just words on page. Unfortuantely
most of the world has become de-sensitzed to the suffering of others, you need
to get our attention! and you need to keep our attention!.

My personal opinion is to wrtie the article from a very positive upbeat
perspective, do not depress your readers or play on their pity, pity is very
scarce right now. Get them motivated, and excited and enthusiastic. This is
just one persons opinion, and only food for thought. love to all

I had the chance to travel to Europe in 1990 & 1992. I really learned what
the term ,"WHEN IN ROME DO AS THE ROMANS DO", and as an American and male I
love my cold beer, but in England they take the beer right off the shelf as
they do cans of beans and drink it. Not a word did I say, although most
Americans would have and that's why we are not loved around the world.
Anyway, maybe that guy that use to travel for LIF could some empathy for my
sisters and brothers as he travel again, that is if he is still with LIF

Any I thank you for starting something like this and I will do anything I

Hi group,
First let me introduce myself. I am Evvy Bryning and I
am on the LiA team. I have been with LiA since the
very beginning. I am the US contact and will be happy
to answer any questions you might have.

I was just reading the article Christina wrote and I
had a question. Do you, Christina, or anyone else know
what the acceptable length is for an ezine article.
Before I start making suggestions for cutting it down
I would just like to know how long it can be.

I'm still reading and thinking so I submit more later.

Evvy

Hi all,

I'm hoping for some feedback. Please help out if you can on this, and be sure to introduce yourself when you do! (sorry David).

Below is a draft text I've been working on for the "Why Click4Africa" page. What I really need to know is... does it make sense to you?

Also, I'd like this to be of a size that someone might run it in an electronic magazine. It's too long now. Any ideas on what can be cut out? Any areas which are really unclear?

I'm especially interested in hearing from those who know the least about Africa.

Thanks in advance, and hope to hear from you.

Christina

P.S. The next article will be "How it works," where we'll be talking about those bananas we promised you!

For the unsuspecting surfer, the quest for clicks and pageviews means you sometimes have to search through a jungle of banners and advertisements to figure out just which link to click on next.

Hi Group

We at LiA are so glad to have you on this list. Well
Christina, you forgot to ask everyone to introduce him
or herself.

I am David Ewaku, a rather new member to the LiA team.
Many of you have known and participated in programs
drawn up by LiA and those who have not then now is the
right time to start. I began working with LiA a
couple of months back.

  I believe that one does not have to touch a person or
see them in order to make a positive difference in
that person’s life.

I am not a writer and sometimes get lost in writing
things that make sense only to me; I am a Director
with a local company called Smart Group Africa.

Many of my friends say that I look at the financial
angle in anything/everything and wonder why I am
working with LiA. The truth be said, one person with
unlimited resources cannot make a difference as much
as millions of people with little resources on people
lives. One person does not have the mental, physical
and emotional capacity to.

As we work together we can all make a big difference
in different people lives and together, not the
strongest hurricane, storm or force can stop us from
transforming society as it is today. It does not take
a government, a big conglomerate, and a billionaire to
make a difference.

I am pleased that I will be able to discuss, across
the board topics, with you on this list. For any
questions, suggestions, ideas etc that anyone has
please post them. You are our eyes, hearts and part of
LiA in your local communities.

Click4Africa is a platform that we want to use to
promote the local people from all over Africa, for
those on the Echoes list, you read stories and helped
through LiA, now with Click4Africa we want to develop
a platform where you will be able to help and promote
real people in Africa directly.

Micro-Success is another one of our websites.
Click4Africa is going to feed the Micro-success
website. This is a website that is going to help real
local day to day African heroes achieve extraordinary
missions (community development, taking care of
orphans, helping very poor people pay school fees etc)

Offline, we are currently doing field interviews with
an initial group of old loan guarantee clients who
need help in getting their projects off the ground.
All these projects have far-reaching implications on
local day-to-day people.

Right now we have this big project but due to human,
technical, financial constraints we may not move as
fast as is needed, I know this will be frustrating so
please bear with us and tell me I can do to improve.
We need this discussion list active in order to
understand our partners in Click4Africa.

We have various technical problems that will not allow
us to operate to full capacity online but we know that
we will get it fixed in the future.

As we work to sort out the kinks in the system, it is
encouraging to see people sign up.
We spent months preparing for this and it is not until
one person signs up that you get relieved and know
that there is a chance for success.

I do believe I am going round in circles so I will
stop here and say welcome and good night.

David
LiA

Hi everyone!

I can't tell you how much it means to see so many familiar names on the list of click4africa signups. Thank you especially to those from the Echoes of Africa subscriber list for your loyal support - makes me feel like this little debut is taking place in the presence of "family," so to speak.

As you know, click4africa is in it's very early stages right now. Last week we "launched" with a message to our Echoes subscribers, and we are in the middle stages of turning our "African Traffic Machine" on, which we'll tell you more about with time.

Now that we have a few sign-ups, we have been trying to tighten up the nuts and bolts of the registration process, so that we'll be ready to handle the results of a larger advertising effort.

We've still got only the front page and sign-up form while we wait for some overdue software to arrive.
Meanwhile, there's plenty of other stuff going on behind the scenes, which we thought it best to let you in on.

There are also a few things we'd like you to understand about our team, the environment we are working in, and what we hope to achieve together with you!

1. The New LiA Tour

Well, the tour is not at all what I thought it was going to be like, but those who have seen it seem to like it so far.

I have been setting the tone and structure of the presentation over the past week, and now the rest of the team is going to help me fill in the rest, with what will hopefully be simple, topic by topic explanations of how the whole platform will all work.

Our explanations will be geared toward the Ugandan market, because that is where we really need the concepts to be well grounded.

We'll keep letting you know when various sections are uploaded so you can let us know if we're being clear to YOU or not. Your feedback on the tour as it develops would be a huge help to us in making sure we get the message right.

Take a browse through the main section pages when you have a chance. I think you'll enjoy what you see so far.

http://lifeinafrica.com/tour

2. Christina's Visions

What I didn't consciously realize until this past week is that designing the New LiA tour one page at a time represents the first time that any of my visions have really been written down.

For several months (between January and July) I was unable to write at all. Now it's coming out in spurts - sometimes exhilerating, sometimes overwhelming. I hardly recognize my own "voice" sometimes, but I admit that I like what I'm producing right now.

Going public with a statement about the visions - even if only to 2,000 people initially - has been kind of a big deal for me this week. It's been an introspective time, which gave me a good excuse to work on the page in the tour about me and my story.

Linked to that page are some recent letters I have written which provide additional insights into the continuing visions, their nature and what kind of stuff they include.

If this stuff is of interest to you, you are free to click on over and read all the details at http://lifeinafrica.com/tour/people/christina.htm

I do want to make it absolutely clear, however, that the purpose of this list is not to discuss or convince you about anything to do with me or the visions, unless it relates directly to click4africa.

All of us on the LiA team love God, but we're a mix of very different religious backgrounds. We might "preach" to you about how to help promote African self-help projects, but we won't try to convince you of anything to do with your relationship with your God.

If the way anyone on the list talks about God offends you in any way, just skip that part, ok? (He's working actively in all of our lives right now, so forgiveness needs to be at the forefront of everything we do.)

3. The LiA environment

What can I say... I have an $800/month fellowship which is supporting all of us right now... The office is in my small 4 bedroom, 1 bathroom home. We've got 5 old computers, 12 adults and 6 kids squeezed in here in shifts throughout the day. Lots of extra beds around, and we've continually got a sink of dirty dishes!

Today the internet access company sacked us with an overdue bill for $1200 in services they had told us they would waive the fees on last year. We sincerely need your prayers that we will find a solution to our internet access problem soon. The link (radio connection) we have is terrible, and we haven't been able to afford the $3,000 in new equipment we need to fix it. Our productivity is severely hampered by this problem, but... we push on!

There are 4 moderators for this list: Me, David, Abdul and Evvy. Evvy is our team member in the US (she's also my mom!), and her link is much better than ours. If you ever need to contact us and aren't getting a response, try Evvy. It sometimes happens that we can't even stay linked long enough to check email for several days, but Evvy has spent a lot of time in Uganda and knows our systems better than any of us, actually.

Otherwise, we usually run a more or less 24 hour operation. The link is better at night, and many of the team have other commitments (paid jobs) during the day, so we're often online around now (you can check to see what time this message came in wherever you are.)

We are all volunteers right now, by the way, with the exception of the guard, my secretary and the neighbor who helps clean the house. The rest of us are all here because we believe in what we can do for Africa. HOWEVER, it's important to understand that LiA is a business and not a charity - the plan does allow for us (and many, many others who will do good works under LiA) to earn the money we need to not only pay our overhead expenses, but to actually eat and pay for a roof over our heads as well.

I warn youin advance, we are a pretty crazy crew, but we are very dedicated and we have a lot of fun. And that's what we are hoping for with you, too!

Now I know you are not really much closer to understanding click4africa than you were when you started reading this longwinded message, but hopefully I've given you enough to let you know that we are very much in "revving up" mode and looking forward to getting to know you as part of our team.

I'll get some sleep now and leave it to some of the others on the LiA team to introduce themselves and possibly start giving you some idea of what c4a is going to be. (Please remember that they are handicapped, however, since most of the details on many of the concepts and ideas are still inside my head... waiting for the new software.)

Talk to you again soon,

My best, and welcome again to you all.
