The Knitting Guild of Atlantia
Atlantia, SCA, knit, knitting
Mission Statement: To keep the Art of knitting alive and offer a path of knowledge, direction and information for all gentles interested in the history of the art of knitting.
The name of the guild comes from the Anglo-Saxon word "clewe," first used in 956 to mean a ball of thread of yarn.
Purpose: The purpose of this group is for each member to gain and further their personal skills, increase the enjoyment they receive from the art of Knitting and to pass on the love of the art. The group will have a very loose structure, but the structure will serve as a guide to improve and add to the knowledge each individual knitter brings to the group. By offering levels of projects increasing in difficulty, each person is challenged to add new skills, knowledge of various knitting arts, how and why Knitting was important in the Middle Ages and Renaissance, and how to incorporate knitting into the fabric of the SCA. Each level will also require that projects be shown at Events. The first level may show their projects either at displays or entered into A&S competitions (according to each persons comfort level--displays are fine if they are not comfortable with entering into competition). The higher two levels will need to enter A&S competitions to complete their requirements, they may also show as part of a display, but this will not help meet level requirements. Projects will need to be shown with increasing frequency as the artisan progresses. Teaching classes at either Universities or Collegiums or at local A&S nights will also be a part of the movement from level to level.
