Dear friends,

I've been offering an alternative New Year retreat for several years now. This year only it will be a Dana event in our home for people who are already practitioners (close friends or family are welcome).

Read about this retreat at www.citta101. com/newyearretre at.htm

There is limited space so if you know you want to attend please register right away. We will love starting the New Year with you in our home.

Guest list will be final when space is full or Christmas Eve (whichever comes first!)

Best wishes for a tranquil and happy holiday,

Mary

Tonight I am going to talk a little about the place of concentration in establishing a mindfulness practice that not only inspires ease and decreases stress but challenges one's perspective an all aspects of life and the substantiality of everything that exists.

Next week I begin a three session series of a longer course on Insight Dialogue, to be furthered in January. This will be a review and enrichment for some, new information for others. The focus this week on the importance of sati is offered because Insight Dialogue or any other application in lived experience will be only as rich as the quality of your mindful concentration.

December course information and registration:  www.citta101.org/threesessionID.htm

I have been teaching elements of Gregory's Insight Dialogue for several years. This past year I joined him and a team of teachers offering a program online, using Insight Dialogue for exploring and integrating The Four Noble Truths into all life experience. The online course is also available to you in early March. It is an excellent way to practice from home with a small and dedicated international sangha. See related flyer soon to be posted at www.citta101.org/WholeLifeFlyer_web.pdf

The sessions I am offering on Monday nights before the online course starts will be helpful in our work but also to the online experience (but not required).

All good wishes,

Mary

Thanks to the efforts of Jason - as a community we have more than one method of
keeping in touch with our Insight and Mindfulness Meditation community. The
Yahoo Group Citta 101 is the long standing place, followed by Insight Meditation
Community Houston (IMCH) and now a Facebook Insight and Mindfulness Meditation
page. Choosing one as your means of staying informed may keep reminder emails
of upcoming community (sangha) events from flooding your Inbox and muddling your
mindfulness. Something to think about: in response to, Why are children happier
than adults? Audrey Thompson, 7 from Texas offers: "Maybe because we get to play
outside and have recess, but grown-ups have to stay inside buildings." When is
the last time you had a recess?

Dear Friends,

We need two more registrations by October 15 to secure our November retreat facility. If you are thinking of attending, please register now.  Those of us who have already committed to being there will really appreciate it - and love your company!

You will be glad you decided to take time off from the challenges of daily life to rest, to recharge, and to come back ready to be more at ease - for the holidays or for whatever your life demands.

All good wishes,

Mary

Dear Friends,

I cannot emphasize enough the value of retreat experience for deepening understanding of your own mind and for integrating skillful habits of mind and heart into lived experience. I hope you will attend our retreat in November (www.citta.com/fallretreat.htm) . I am looking forward to your company, to the supportive comfort of the Knittel Homestead Inn, and to sharing the results of a retreat from which  I will be just returning - another 10 day Insight Dialogue retreat.

There are two other retreats I want to recommend.

Rodney Smith, my lineage teacher, will be at MAC October 15-19 (www.citta101.org/RodneyOctRetreat2009.pdf ). I have worked with Rodney for many years and feel deeply blessed by his teaching. Without the expansiveness of Right View, which he emanates, meditation practice could be a burden instead of a joy. He is a great pleasure to sit with, a challenging and powerful teacher, yet he speaks clearly to people new to practice and uses language that crosses traditions.

I'd also like you to let you know about a valuable experience nearby in late October. Gregory Kramer is teaching an Insight Dialogue retreat in Kansas City. Insight Dialogue retreats are traditional silent vipassana retreats, but during several of the sittings include some closely guided interactive meditation. For experienced meditators the interactive element challenges an inclination to escape through practice. For people new to meditation it offers some support through interacting with others, especially those with more experience.  Those with experience make visible the process and the possibilities of deeper practice through the challenge of meditative interaction.

Over many years Gregory has been creating and developing this especially helpful means of integrating the practice of clear seeing into all life experience. He is a skillful and deeply engaged teacher. Several days with this practice is an amazing experience.

The retreat, offered by Mid-America Dharma, is October 23-26. (www.citta101.com/IDRetreat0910GK.pdf  ).  It also includes an optional facilitators training (October 23-28). If you have done any courses with me in the past eight or nine years, or followed the Interpersonal blog, you have had a taste of Insight Dialogue. If you have retreat experience of at least one week plus three years of committed daily practice, consider taking the facilitator training as well as doing the retreat. It will be a rich and rewarding experience and bring you more deeply into the work.

Wishing you all the best, happiness and ease,
(And the precious and rare opportunity of retreat experience!)

Mary

Thanks Randy!

The address for Insight Meditation Houston Community site is www.meditationhouston.org.

For those of you who have not been introduced to this site:

Jason Adams is creating a sangha site. It is intended for those who wish to be part of a community focused on fostering their insight meditation practice and helping make it available to others. My site, citta101.com, includes information on the IMCH site, but community information is not as easy to access. The citta101 site includes many ways I am working with the teachings in addition to our community/Dana work.

It has all gotten to be too much work for me to do. And community requires members feeling the group is their own. I was about ready to let community building go when Jason and Randy stepped forward and brought new life to our group. They are both taking actions to help build and sustain a community of practitioners. At this time Jason is building a website and Randy Bratsven is improving communications in other ways, including work with this mailing list – both valuable contributions! If you see a need and would like to help this venture please let us know. We will welcome your participation in creating a valuable and meaningful support for each other.

Gratitude and much metta,

Mary

Dear Friends,

The sitting on Monday will be the first in a series of review sessions of a beginning course.  It will be helpful to me and reinforcing for you if you email a registration form (www.citta101.com/sixweekcourse.htm ) and pay the registration fee at the beginning of the course instead of making a weekly donation.  You will be welcome either way.

We have completed a gradual exploration of Gregory Kramer's book Insight Dialogue, integrating the book a small piece at a time for over two years!  For several years before we were using the guidelines of Insight Dialogue in all the sitting groups.  This work has included blog entries at:  www.interpersonalpractice.blogspot.com

I have become more involved in the Insight Dialogue community so I'll be sharing more about this in the coming months. The beginnings of this work presented in a more formal way are the Interpersonal Practice courses.  www.citta101.com/insightdialogue.htm  These courses are also available as Continuing Education

Some of the themes we've worked with besides the practices of Insight Dialogue are indicated on the Insight and Mindfulness blog at: www.citta101.org/blogger.htm  Insight Dialogue is just one way to practice. Every theme we've worked with can be addressed in individual private experience or in interactive meditations.

Much Metta,

Mary

Thanks to Jason Adams we have a new website at www.meditationhouston.org . This is our community site. As Jason works with this site, the Citta 101 site is also changing. Citta 101 is expanding to include community pages as well as multiple ways of integrating meditation practice into personal and professional settings.

As we make these changes, we are looking at different ways of delivering information to you. You may notice already some improvements in your notification about events.  This is the result of members (thanks especially to Randy Bratsven) looking at our Yahoo service and considering how it may be more useful to you and to our community.

We welcome your input or suggestions about any of these developments. Please send messages to moderator (as opposed the whole mailing list). All moderators will see and gratefully consider your comments.

We will  send the new newsletter out in a day or two. It will be coming through Constant Contact instead of this mailing list. The newsletter is very similar to those of the past. It contains information about community events and also courses available as continuing education, for corporate venues, and for private individuals.

With the new mailing, you will be able to sign up for content you wish to receive. Every message will include options to subscribe and unsubscribe. You may also choose to receive the community mailing only (current Yahoo mailing – this service).

Please add me in your address book with the email addresses: mary@... and mary@.... The wt.net addresses will have to go in time as wt.net is no longer an Internet Service Provider.

I hope these changes will be better sources of information for you!
