OK so it's been since March since I last posted here. That's quite a while.

Here is a link to some of the photos from my holiday in Italy this year.

It was great to catch up with Marcelle and Beatrice.

Cheers, Paul

It has been a long time but when I checked out the site recently
following Sandy's prompting it was good to see the old familiar names
crop up.

Italian connections is what has drawn us to this site and I was in
Italy last weekend in Parma and Sarzana seeing family and friends. It
was also my Sister in law's 60th Birthday so last Sunday we were at
an Agriturismo(Pr.Cremona)which appeared to be in the middle of
nowhere to celebrate this grand occasion. I had sent crackers out by
mail and I had brought with me a couple of masks etc as there's
nothing we like better than having a good laugh!
It rained and rained but it didn't dampen our fun and all too soon I
was being waved off at Parma airport....until the next time!

As Christmas will be spent with our daughter Janet, Andy and family
we'll be attending the Xmas am service 'with Royalty' at Sandringham.
A first for us so something to look forward to.

I wish you all un Buon Natale e Felice Anno Nuovo

Very nice to see a flutter of activity and good to hear your news!
Sorry that your dream house in Italy never became a reality,
Felicity. It's such a shame that the Italian red tape acts as a
barrier to many people owning property there. Reassuring to know that
Paul and Mark and still careering from one end of Italy to the other
via their preferred means of transport and that Roy is still globe
trotting - congratulations on your marriage, Roy!
Very best wishes to everyone British, Italian, American, Dutch and any
other nationalities I've missed - I hope you all have a Happy

Hi everyone! Come state? Long time no hear!
I see that there is still the occasional spluttering of activity in
this group and I felt very guilty when I made a rare foray into my
Hotmail account to find a few applications to join the group, long
ignored! I apologise to those who did not receive a prompt reply,
but as you may have gathered, although this group was at one time
very active, regrettably like many other things in life it has
become neglected! To those of you from "the old days" who are still
getting emails via the group, I hope you are all well and that at
least some of you are still persevering with the Italian. I confess
that I have not opened an Italian book for a very long time, but I
did meet by chance last week an Italian teacher in my neighbourhood,
previously unknown to me, who gives private lessons, so I promised
to give her a ring some time and book a few lessons. It would be a
shame to lose it after all the struggles of learning the language,
albeit to a rather less than fluent level!
A quick resume of my life - still working as agent for Italian
translation company - still living in Preston - still married, down
to one child of 12yrs at home now, so fairly stress-free! Never
bought a house in Italy or France, but an apartment in Preston!
(Yes, very dull I know, and hardly a good investment as it has
turned out recently) We had one trip to Milan a year ago but 2008
has been the first year in 10 that I haven't been to Italy and my
life is the poorer for it!
Anyway, if any of you step into Il Circolo soon, I wish you all a
Happy Christmas and would love to hear your news.
And to any new members who feel they have joined an "ex-group" I do
apologise, but if you post an email, you never know - you may get a
reply! We do have British and Italian members, so you stand a fair
chance of a response in either language!

Hi Sandy

I'm still around like the others still getting the digest

Just back from a long weekend in Rome where the weather was
fantastic, walked round the perimeter of the city (11 miles) seeing
loads of places we hadn't been before.

Spent an idillic 10 days in my old Alfa spider last year along with 6
other chaps in old Alfas driving to and from Italy, top down every
day. We caused a bit of a stir driving round Lake Como and got
mobbed (in a nice way) by a load of Italian Lorry drivers at a petrol
station we stopped at. Even the police waved to us as we drove by.

Planning another trip in 2009.

Ciao

Mark G

Ciao, ciao, ciao.

I am still around, and still getting the 'Digest' - I have seen a few posts over
the last couple of months but, as you both say, not a lot of activity.

I got divorced in January, and as some may know, got remarried in April in
Malaka, Malaysia after a pretty hectic time. Basically, I arrived on a Saturday,
converted to Islam on the Monday and then spent a hair-raising 2 days running
here, there and everywhere to get permission to marry from various sources
(including Malaysian Immigration) culminating in waiting for over 3 hours at the
Malaka Muslim authority (Jawa) and finally getting permission at around 6 pm on
the Wednesday evening. We then had to wait for evening prayers and a reading of
the Quran to finish before finding an Imam. The ceremony finished at about 10:15
and we (me, my new wife Amey and some of her family) then went off to an Italian
restaurant (run by one of Amey's cousins) in a hotel and had a very
'interesting' meal - interesting because I spent most of the time answering
questions of her father, who I had only met 1 hour before the wedding, and at
that meeting I had to ask for his
  permission to marry Amey!

Needless to say, Amey is not her real name, rather her English name, as most
ethnic Malaysians have an English as well as Muslim name. Amey's name is Hayati
Binti Mohamad. My Muslim name is Muhammad Hashim Roy Nelson (the Roy Nelson
means that anyone can still call me Roy!),

After the meal, Amey's sister, Liza (Hasliza) and her botfriend drove us back to
our hotel in Petaling Jaya, where we arrived at 3:30 in the morning. We checked
out at 8 in the evening and left for the airport where I had to say a fond
farewell to my blushing bride and return to the UK!!! Amey had to wait for her
visa which took a protracted 3 months to get sorted and she eventually arrived
here on 16th August.

Her visa is valid for 27 months which is exceptionally unusual as a spousal visa
is normally only valid for 24 months - we think the 'extra' time added is
because we had to wait for 3 months after being married.

Between February and May I was working on a project in Watford and had the great
pleasure of meeting up with Paul and catching up on lost time over a few years.
I am not sure if anyone is interested, but a few of us are actually "friends" on
Facebook - Paul, Liz, Bea, Judith and myself to my knowledge - not sure if
anyone else is. If anyone is interested, let me know.... it's very simple to
join.

Nice to hear from you both. Oh, I am now the proud owner of 2 mortgages - 1 on
the ex-family home and the other on my new home - so if anyone knows of anyone
wanting to buy a house in Derby, I have a rather nice 4 bedroom, 3 bathroom with
a double garage that has been on the market for 20 months now! Any reasonable
(within 15% of the original asking price) offer accepted!

Take care and perhaps we'll all meet up again soon!
Roy.

Ciao Sandy,

Great to hear from you and your news! I am still signed up to the Circolo to get
the news "digests", but for some reason can't get into the site itself - no
matter, as the "digests" keep comming anyway!...

We did not buy in Italy either after all...a very long story, but revolving
around the road access to Il Pozzo, legalities and promises that never
materialised despite the good auspices of local Italian friends! We too ended up
buying in the UK, a small cottage for my daughter in Amersham, which we are now
having to let as she has moved out. My son is at Uni (Bristol) so all ours have
"flown the nest"...

We still make several trips a year to Italy when ever we can! (staying in the
holiday homes of Italian friends sometimes!) and still ever hopeful of buying a
"bolt hole" one day for ourselves! My language skills are just about as bad as
they ever were, but I am keeping up some learning in a small way when I can (by
MP3 player on the tube for example!),but my freelance work has taken off though,
so I am fully committed to building up a pension pot while the work lasts (to
spend in Italy perhaps in a few years time!)

Paul and I have chatted one or twice too, but as you say the group is pretty
quiet!

Keep well, and perhaps we shall catch up in person one day. If you are ever in
London, in or around Kings Cross, then give me a call for a quick coffee
perhaps?

Buon Natale e felice anno nuovo!

Felicity

Hi Robert

Are you settled in London now? meetup.com have Italian Language Meetup groups in
various places around the country. I've never been to one so I can't vouch for
them but I go to a Photography group that is part of the meetup.com website. At
the moment I get to speak to people in Italian via skype and at Inter Club
London which is a football fan organisation of Internazionale. My teacher left
to go back to Italy earlier this year and I have yet to sort out a new teacher
or evening classes.

Cheers, Paul

Hi Everyone,

Long time no speak! I am not active really on any Italian forums now, one I
do occasionally visit is italian fever but mostly chat on a forum that a few
people set up who knew each other from two previous Italian forums. It does
not focus specifically on Italy but the subject comes up frequently. If it
sounds like the kind of forum you would not mind being part of I will
happily share the link (we don't advertise too widely due to some unsavoury
characters giving us a hard time on the previous two forums).

Cheers,
Robert

Hi, I am in London some days of the week, and need to practice more
Italian, but my level is not very good! so Italian conversation would
be very slow...! but I am happy to meet a group occasionally and do my
best to join in!

Ciao Roberto

I've been a bit rubbish on making sure that Skype has been switched on so I
haven't seen you on there. I work in the Farringdon area of London so if you
fancy meeting up for lunch some time do let me know.

Cheers, Paul

Ciao Bea, Paul e tutti,
buona Pasqua.....con nube? (is that the right word for snow? cant
remember!)...Its been more like "natale" here!

I shall be in venice next month for a short break. work is madly busy
so need time off, and am lucky enough to be visiting italian friends.

Hope all is well with you all,

Felicity

Ciao Amici

I'm not going to be making any trips in the near future until my work situation
is sorted out. I don't want to be on holiday if I am out of a job so I can't
commit myself to the Verona trip at the moment. This still doesn't stop the rest
of you from meeting up there.

Thanks, Paul

P.S. I must get back onto Skype and talk to you guys more.
