'Al-Qaeda' arrests spark Malawi riot
Police in the Malawi city of Blantyre have fired tear gas at Muslims protesting against the arrest and deportation of five suspected al-Qaeda members. They accused the government of losing sovereignty by secretly handing the suspects over to American CIA agents, despite a High Court ruling ordering the government to charge or release the men.

Bush's 'Transformational' Democracy
During the Florida recount in 2000, George W. Bush's campaign paid the expenses of Republican operatives who were flown to Florida and staged a riot that stopped the counting of votes in Miami. Campaign documents also show that Bush picked up the tab for a post-riot celebration that included crooner Wayne Newton signing "Danke Schoen."

Cops Could Shoot Lasers
Known either as the "Anti-Personnel Beam Weapon" or "Non-Lethal Tetanizing Beam Weapon," it releases two ultraviolet laser beams with a wavelength of 193 to 248 nanometers that paralyzes the skeletal muscles of people and animals up to 2 kilometers away. The laser beams, which sends currents at 10 milliampere and are effective within a few milliseconds after they charge, are strong enough to penetrate clothing but too weak to damage the skin or to be lethal, according to Eric Herr, vice president of HSV Technologies. Infernal Noise Brigade
The INB is a tactical mobile rhythmic unit consisting of: a majorette, medics, tactical advisors, rifle-twirling contingent, flag corps, sound-generating kart, vocalists, horns, and between 8 and 12 percussionists. The INB was in New York City to impede the Republican National Convention, marched with nearly a million people, played a lot of gigs, took to the streets, and eventually landed in jail. After getting out and reclaiming their equipment the group had 24 hours to play a few more live sets and track their newest record.

Maximum pain is aim of new US weapon
One document, a research contract between the Office of Naval Research and the University of Florida in Gainsville, is entitled "Sensory consequences of electromagnetic pulses emitted by laser induced plasmas". It concerns so-called Pulsed Energy Projectiles (PEPs), which fire a laser pulse that generates a burst of expanding plasma when it hits something solid, like a person (New Scientist, 12 October 2002, p 42). The weapon, destined for use in 2007, could literally knock rioters off their feet. According to a 2003 review of non-lethal weapons by the US Naval Studies Board, which advises the navy and marine corps, PEPs produced "pain and temporary paralysis" in tests on animals.

Defense Department spokesman Lt. Col. John Skinner said the military has taken steps to reduce the chance of violent uprisings at its prisons and the use of excessive force by soldiers, and also has improved the health care available to prisoners. "The military has dramatically improved detention operations, everything from increased oversight and improved facilities to expanded training and the availability of state-of-the-art medical care," he said in a statement.

Secondhand correspondence from Israel
From secondhand correspondance from Israel: Recently the army has been treating us like lab rats, testing all sorts of new ammunition on us as a sort of dress rehersal for them for what's gonna happen when the soldiers come to kick out the settlers from Gaza. We've seen paint bullets, salt bullets, sound alarms that hurt your ears. The recent addition has been these big balls that are spongy and hard on one side and look like ping pong balls. I mean, what are we going to tell the media? That the army is shooting ping pong balls at us? They also held up pictures of 'The Scream' by Klimt. I was later told that it's in response to the sound alarms ('screams' in Arabic and Hebrew) that the army started using. (See also The Scream in the Gadget's Energy Weapons folder.)
