What does the mass stand for? Probably a hundred
different things, depending on who you ask. For some,
it is indeed "fun." For others it is working towards
the decline of western civilization, celebrating
bikes, fighting car culture, electing Nader etc. etc.

One of the beauties of the mass is that there is no
mission statement or official position. The
literature is whatever someone decided to type up. If
you have a message that you want the mass to convey,
then make up a flyer yourself. Its that simple.

I didn't know it was a "peace march" until after the
mass and someone had told me what it was supposed to
be about. As we passed it I saw lots of anti-Israel
signs etc. Thankfully, I didn't see any swastikas
that are usually present at such events. While some
on the mass were showing solidarity, others of us were
showing disapproval.

If anyone is interested, I can tell you stories of
what I've seen at "peace marches" but will only do so
off-list as it is off-topic.

Off-topic? Yes. It has nothing to do with what we
discuss on this list except as it relates to CM. In
part, that is because while we on this list have some
consensus when it comes to bikes, we come from
divergent backgrounds and ideologies, and such
discussions only detract from what we are here to
discuss: the mass, bikes, cars. It also undoes the
community building that the mass accomplishes.

Why, therefore, did we ride by the march? Becuase the
map maker led us there. We have ridden past the
Indonesian consulate, to Haymarket square, and to
other sites that may be controversial amongst the
riders of the mass. We could have just as easily
ridden past a pro-Israel rally had someone written a
map that took us there. That's the nature of
xerocracy.

Some of us believe that blowing up a pizza parlor full
of kids is armed resistance. Others of us support
arrest or assasination of the perpetrators and
planners of those attacks.

Some of us want all the banks burned to the ground and
money abolished. Others of us work for those banks
and invest our money in whatever stocks will make the
most cash.

Some of us refuse base our lives around work and live
marginal existences. Others of us slave away in
corporations and insist on more comfortable
lifestyles.

Some of us hate cars and car culture. Others of us
collect cars and rebuild them as a hobby.

Some of us ride bikes for their environmental
soundness. Others of us just say "bikes are fun!"

The mass encompases us all, and we all make the mass.

The diversity makes us powerful.

Peace,

Dan Kliman
Professional/Zionist/Anti-car activist
