Subject: Re: [CET-India] Digest Number 114

Dear all,

Hope everybody's doing great. Reji had pointed out in the
previous mail that he hadn't got to know about the Alumni
Day held on the 8th of November. The truth is that very few
of us do. It's only a few who get to know through
word-of-mouth. The reason is that quite simply CETAA exists
only on paper. Although most of us have applied for
membership and a lot of us have remitted the membership fee,
there has been no response from CETAA.

This state of paralysis is also the reason why a college
whose alumni list rivals that of the IITs in numbers and
prominence gets hardly any benefit from it. Apart from the
scattered benevolence of a few individuals or batches,
hardly any endowments have happened and neither is there
anywhere near the level of support to placement and career
guidance as we can provide.

During my tenure as CGPU rep and Union General Secy., I
tried to moot the idea of an Alumni Cell which brings
student presence into CETAA. In the IITs and IIMs, such an
arrangement ensures vitality in institute - alumni relation
ship. The alumni organisation also works closely with the
institute's placement unit ensuring the best possible
placements. This is the secret of the success of the IIMs
and IITs, much more than the quality of the faculty, course
content or the infrastructure.

It seems that only the strong intervention of the alumni
will ensure that the status quo changes for the better.
Looking forward to hearing your thoughts on this. Take care
and have a nice weekend ahead.

Warm Regards,

Ajay

Subject: Re: [CET-India] What can be done for college?

Hi Reji

Its very thoughtful of you guys to give back something to
CET. I passed out by 2006 in Mechanical engineering.

What I think the student could really find helpful is a good
reading room near library or inside one. If possible air
conditioned and with comfortable seats. We have tons of
books in the library which most of the students never tend
to dwell into and a lot of good technical magazines too.

If there is a very comfortable place to take the books and
read, I am sure some more students will be encouraged to
read and get some thoughts process going into the technical
subjects. The room could also use some wi-fi network or some
computer stations.

That is what I felt I lacked when I graduated and started
working , my knowledge and exposure to engineering was
limited to the syllabus which doesnt dwell much into the
application parts. (I am not sure about other branches but
for ME it is true).

If the perssion is recieved to make such a room inside the
library itself, I would say the cost of the project would be
somewhere between 1-3 lakhs depending on how big you want
the room to be.

If you guys are looking for something that costs lesser,
installing some water coolers with filters (some more)
around the campus would be very helpful too(I am not sure
about the present situation). When I was there there were too
few and some of them didnt work all the time.

If the present students could create a platform where
aluminis could talk and share their career or education
related experiences, it would provide a lot of much neeed
exposure. Most students I know are confused as to what are
the options in front of them other than going for the job
they get through campus placement. And I dont see many
students using the online forum, maybe because they are not
in it or they dont know about it. I think have talks in
college is much more effective than doing it online.

Hope it helps.

Dear Group members,

I am manoj Kini, alumni and now teaching in architecture
department in CET.one thing thats happening in the campus is
the masterplanning of campus with landscaping.

The design was presented in the CEETAA meeting and the work
has started. One old batch of 1955 is sponsoring the grand
steps coming in front.also two long avenues are proposed
which extends from MH campus to LH campus in font and
behind the campus.

The master plan also envisages the grand open sapce with
landscaping one in front ,one in front of the library and
one our old playgroung with galleries and synthetic track.so
thinh abt this and what we can do abt this
