I agree. But Rick and I were discussing "indecency" in public
(nipplegate) and in the public arena (magazines, etc.). You
weren't specific when you made your comments, so I figured you
were on about what we were on about. What WERE you on
about, then? Verbal harassment?

Yes, people have the freedom to not watch, etc.

My point is, quite simply, the government has no role to play in
matters of speech, "indecent" or otherwise.

Not sure if this would extend to Canada, but in the UK, at least in my
experience "Fred" is a common "placeholder" name for generically
nameable things. In fact this usage extended so commonly into the
programming scene as a scratch variable name, it's even found it's way
into the jargon file - (
http://www.catb.org/~esr/jargon/html/F/fred.html ) - I don't think any
of the suggested derivations in the entry are much cop though, I'm
certain I was using it before I started poking at computers. It's
absolutely true though that much computer code is littered with
inconsequential things called "fred".

So when I read Jaka's story, I read the joke thus, along the lines of
"Joe Bloggs" , or perhaps the US-ian "John Doe" - although I thought
all the "Fred" laughs in that story similar to "Bob" for any Blackadder
fans.

Anyone who hasn't done so  should check out the ROTS videogame trailer at Lucasarts.com. It includes #way# more spoilers than the movie trailer; my favourite scene is Anakin and Dooku's 'sabres crossing in front of Emperor Palpatine - mirroring/foreshadowing the Luke v Vader duel in ROTJ.

Can't help you with the term, but my favorite haiku of all time was
in an old "Badger" comic book. I want to say #47 or #48, but that's
just off the top of my head, and may be wrong.

Anyway, this rain forest was being menaced by loggers, and the Ju-Ju
Jaguar (who lived there) acted out (in "charades") this haiku,
basically saying it was time to move on:

> Yo, Moe. Time to blow!
> Lumberjack is up our ass.
> Let's make like a tree.

(You all get that it's "make like a tree and leave", right?)

The two-part story also contained such memorable lines as:

Badger: I have half a mind to <whatever>.
Mrs. Badger: That's all honorable husband *does* have. Half a mind.

Hey, is that a drawing of Dave with that earring on?

See, I've always wondered who the ghostly image was during the
opening sequence of "Minds", and it made sense that it was Dave,
except that I ruled that out because I figured the flashing earring
indicated it was a woman instead.

I was even going to ask that as a question for "Minds". "Who is that
ghostly image in the opening sequence"? I guess that's another
mystery solved.

My theory, which I just made up now?

Capital-L Liberals have faith that, given the freedom to choose,
everyone would choose to be like them (us?) and it fries their (our?)
brains when the evidence seems to suggest otherwise. They (we?) just
can't be*lieve* that anyone would choose to act *that* way.

Capital-C Conservatives have *no* faith that the common man (and
woman) will behave correctly, but they have faith that, once *forced*
onto the path of righteousness, people will reluctantly but
inevitably see that that path is the only desirable one. They may
try and fail to stay on that path, but they will try. It fries their
brains when the evidence seems to suggest otherwise. They just can't
be*lieve* that anyone who has been exposed to their "truth" would not
find their way self-evidently compelling.

I try to have faith in the ability of free adults to act like free
adults. That doesn't mean I believe they (we) always choose
correctly. It means I believe that letting them (us) choose and
occasionally fail ends up in the long run with a better outcome than
does forcing everyone to do what *I* think is right at the moment.
It means accepting at least the possibility that if the majority sees
the world differently from me, *maybe* I'm the one who's wrong and
they are the ones who are right. It's my opinion that this is the
essence of small-l liberalism, and that if Capital-L Liberals don't
adhere to it, it's because they've lost their identity. It's why I
find George W's unwavering certitude to be an unattractive
characteristic, in contrast to the way Conservatives like Dave Sim
feel about it (yes, I said *feel*). But I'm getting even further off
topic, am I not? ;)

It never ocurred to me that it was ambiguous as to whether it was Dave! I mean
it looks just like he drew himself in the 180's! And I think he drew himself

Sesame Street is *supposed* to be all about how being different is
good and everyone is included. And then they have that song
about "One of these things is not like the others. One of these
things just doesn't belong." And I wonder, doesn't anyone even read

And there's no "I" in "team".
But there is a "me" in team (and that "no *I* in team" quote is wrong as well. If there is a team it IS made up of individual "I" persons as well.)

And there's no "f" in "way".  ;)
This also depends on whether there is an eff in the "discipline" refered to (as in Feng Shui or Confuscianism -- which obviously have effs in them) or possibly Buddhism which has many, many mentions of the Fold as parts of the path of the to-be-enlightened....

Nice.

It reminds me of the show Pacific Blue (or something
like that). I was informed by many folk (and I was
awfully surprised that people were watching this show)
that the lead character's name was Tony Palermo.

Great.

That's one of the reasons I love comics so much,
moments like that.

In fact, a "moment like that" happened for me in
CEREBUS #88 when the grey one blew off Thrunk's leg
and got me hooked on the series...where I was to
encounter many more "moments like that".

As long as no criminal acts are committed, I think the
govt should stay out of content...but yeah, the
distribution of said "content" should be regulated as
the need arises.

I remember, it's just that you make great points fo me
to counterpoint with that, even if I'm not trying to
beat it over *your* head. Think of it more as
teamwork. :)

I've always said that's the trouble with open orgies
and temple prostitutes...you're never getting exactly
what you think you're getting.

Agreed. Fine the hell out of them if you have to, but
keep them out of prison.

Heh. That falls under Civility, along with not
picking your nose and wiping it on your shirt pocket
in front of people.

When it's determined that the results of such
"dissent" don't damage prepubescent children, then
they can be allowed to dissent.

Yeah, they used to do "One of these things is not like the others"
back in the early days, but I remember it being changed in the mid
eighties to things like "One of these kids is dong his own thing,"
very street, very hip, man. It's cool to march to that different
beat! I wasn't saying that Sesame street was against diversity, I
was trying to state the opposite - but that our larger 'American'
culture is always stressing just how bad diversity really is.
That's all.

Now, let's talk about Dave Chappelle's standup stuff concerning
Sesame Street. Do you really wanna go there? Six foot pigeons
walkin' around? Crazy midget mammmoths? And everyone is always
bustin' on Oscar for being a grouch. He lives in a fuckin' garbage
can, fer crissakes! And the Count, he ain't foolin' nobody. Only
guy dresses like that in a neighborhood like Sesame Street is a
pimp! "You don't have my money? How many times must I slap you?
One! Two! Three!" OK, I'm done.

We're all the same in what we are...but we're all very
much different in what we want.

Although John wanting a blowjob from an Irish Setter
really doesn't scare me as much as it makes me cringe
thinking about what might happen if the dog is really
hungry.

*That* would've looked like someone that does VEGAS is
on this list, that's how that would've looked!

D'OH! :)

Instead, just ask him for a PS2 and a TV emulator card
for your PC. I think you're on your own with the big
screen. :)
