CELTIC LEAGUE - PRESS INFORMATION
CALL FOR SAINTS DAY HOLIDAY IN CORNWALL
There have been renewed calls for Cornwall's patron saint, St. Piran,
to have recognition by a public holiday such as some of those held
in the other Celtic countries.
To coincide with this years St. Piran's day, March 5th, the Cornish
branch added its voice to the campaign. The branch statement is set
out below.
"Dy’Goel St. Piran!
When is St. Piran’s Day going to be made into a public holiday? Over
the years there has been a great deal of talk and debate over this
issue, with half-hearted promises made by Cornish politicians.
With the elections no doubt soon approaching now is the time to ask
Cornwall’s prospective candidates to make their position clear. Are
they for a Dy’Goel St. Piran or against it?
An Scoren Kernewek/The Cornish Branch of the Celtic League will be
writing to all of Cornwall’s prospective candidates over the next
couple of months to ask them this very question. (Watch this space
to find out who is or is not in favour and who failed to respond).
Regardless of what people think, it is St. Piran and not St. Petroc
or any other saint who is increasingly seen as Cornwall’s patron saint.
So let us all stand behind Cornwall’s own Gwynn ha Du/Black and White
this weekend, whatever celebrations we are involved in, and demand
some straight answers to some straight forward questions."
