Well there was not a whole lot of encouraging response to my initial post. So I
snooped around and found a "refurbished" Garmin Colorado at a price I was
willing to pay from everyone's favorite mega online auction site. The Garmin
Colorado arrived today.
Plans are to try it out then post joint wherigo outings for those without
wherigo-enabled devices. Most likely will be weekday afternoons after work. One
local cacher did respond to the original post and has offered to let me or other
known/trusted local cachers "borrow" a Garmin Oregon. Might be interesting to
compare results.
Anyway if you are interested in wherigo or just getting the local wherigo's
"cleared" then watch for wherigo posts in this forum.

I had planned to lead a "rainbow" type hike through Toro on Saturday. Apparently
it is a bit much because none of my rainbow type pals have committed to the hike
yet. Planned route includes portions of Toyon Loop, Black Mountain, Simas to
Airplane, Harper Canyon (for Ross' Basket), Ollason, a detour for an attempt on
"Its High Time", and Gilson Gap trail back to the main entrance.

If you know there is an issue with a cache along that route and want a "cache
medic" type visit then reply to this post.

I plan to check all caches along the route and will post a report after the hike
for condition of those caches.

Anyone who is feeling very energetic is also welcome to tag along for a guided
tour with a guy who has already done the SImas to Airplane once. (i.e.
guaranteed find and guaranteed not to get hopelessly lost in the brambles) By
"very energetic" I mean able to maintain a steady pace up Black Mountain trail
and still finish a dozen miles worth of geo-caching in about eight hours.

Okay I caved in and bought a Colorado 300 from everyones favorite online mega
auction site.

The Colorado did not work on the first wherigo cache which I tried. (geobot near
Seaside/Monterey city limits)

I then tried a second wherigo and that one worked. (Memories near Lovers Point
in Pacific Grove)

Then decided to turn loose of some additional cash and purchased a Nuvi 550
which has the wherigo functionality. It worked on the wherigo cache which i
tried unsuccessfully with the Colorado.

Since then I have downloaded and applied updates to the Colorado - as suggested
by our local wheri-guru. I have not yet tested the updated Colorado on that
first wherigo.

At this time I am prepared to accompany anyone who wishes to try "geobot" or
"Memories". Best time for me is after work on weekdays. Could probably make it
for a 5:30 start time.

I am planning to try another wherigo this afternoon. If that goes well then I
will add a third wherigo to the list. If anyone wishes to tag along today then I
need to know before 1630 - which I realize is extremely short notice.

Anyway if you want to get the wherigo icon and/or see what wherigo looks like on
the Colorado 300 or Nuvi 550 then reply to this post.

Going to go and see if "geobot" will complete with updated "firmware" in the
Colorado 300. Anyone who wishes to get this cache should meet at the starting
point by 6 p.m. Yes, I know this is extremely short notice.

P.S. That is in forty minutes. Also, you are guauranteed to complete the wherigo
regardless of whether or not it works on the Colorado because I will also have a
Nuvi 550 with me and geobot is known to work with that GPSr.

Mission accomplished. Geobot completes on the Colorado 300 with updated
"firmware". Thanks to touchstone for suggesting that easy fix. Added bonus -
da_ewoks borrowed my Nuvi 550 and gets one more smiley face for completing
geobot. If you know someone who is interested in getting the wherigo's without
getting the hardware but is not on this list then you might suggest that they
join. I'm free most weekdays after work...

I'd be into this.   But they'd have to be in kid-friendly places, as I am single so when I cache, the kids cache.  And it would mostly have to be weekends.

Okay, the actual wherigo doesn't sound like much exercise. But getting there
will give me an excuse to burn off some of the excess pizza calories which I ate
this week. I will take multiple wherigo-enabled devices - and as usual anyone
who wishes to try wherigo or get some wherigo cache icons without investing in
special hardware is welcome to tag along. Game plan is to arrive at Syzygy
(GC27WJ9) by 5:30 p.m.

Also, thinking of Treasure Island III (GC18CR7) on Sunday afternoon around 5
p.m. Paddle boats are $20 for an hour - closes at 6:30 p.m. Up to 3 adults may
ride a paddle boat.

Please reply to this post if interested in joining the fun for one or both of
these cache outings.

Just got back from my trip to Geowoodstock yesterday evening. Mondo logging to
do!

Now planning the evenings for this week and then the weekend.

I want to try the Sea of Cortez (wherigo) one evening this week - anyone who
wishes to tag along please respond to this post. Can be any evening other than
Wednesday. Time could be flexible from about 5pm until dark.

I am supposed to go on a hike at Wilder Ranch on Saturday - roughly 11am - 4pm.
I am thinking of trying Pacific Mall Garden Bingo (wherigo) and/or The Western
Canon (two consecutive wherigo cartridges) while I am in the area. Could be
early or after the hike. Anyone wishing to tag along please respond to this
post.

I have extra wherigo-enabled GPSr - to share - and to improve the odds of the
program working on at least one device.

Welcome back to the area, Ramona!

I recently bought a new device (Oregon) so I could check out Whereigo's...unfortunately, I haven't been able to use it yet. Are you willing to learn it together? I know there's at least one Whereigo in Monterey...I'll go ahead and download the cartridge this weekend.

I work in Monterey so could easily do a whereigo after work, or weekends.

Welcome back Ramona!

I should point out that in order to play Wherigo Cartridges, you are no longer
necessarily bound by the wrist and ankles to Garmin. There are now both Android
and iPhone versions of the Player available.

WhereYouGo for Android:

http://www.androidpit.com/en/android/market/apps/app/menion.android.whereyougo/W\
hereYouGo

PiGo for iPhone:

http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/pigo/id385035547?mt=8

I tested the iPhone app on the Geobot Cartridge at Laguna Grande Park, and it
worked without a problem. I haven't had a chance to test it on Sea of Cortez
down on Cannery Row yet, but I suspect it would probably work fine.

Good luck!

I've logged all of them in the area except Sea of Cortez. That one is on the agenda for Saturday morning - weather permitting.

Done.

Ticks may be a problem near the cache in Marina. Precautions include long pants
tucked into socks, shirt tucked in, (thwarts instinct to go upward on the host),
mosquito repellant applied around neckline and sleeves, etc. Remove and wash
then hot dry all clothing after the hike. This will kill any undetected
hitchhikers before they transfer to pets or children. Not to scare anyone off -
modest precautions will prevent bites.

Also be advised that indigent persons camp near the Monterey cache.

I am assuming a group effort on any of these caches raises probability of
success and is safer than solo efforts.

Timing is flexible. It is dark by 1830. So any time after that. I hope to score

Based on responses thus far, lets plan to
meet at 1900 (7pm) at the Carmel Mission Parking lot.
For the Flanders Haunted Mansion cache.
Depending on how that goes could try other caches afterward.
We'll keep da_ewoks on standby for phone-a-friend - of course anyone including
previous finders who wish to tag a long are more than welcome to do so.

Mark will be there.  He drives a dark Honda pilot.  If my mom will watch the kids, I will be there too!

Flanders Mansion is well marked and in a nice preserve (so you will feel quite at easy and safe) you should have no problems finding the cache.

Half-life:Ununtrium was the hardest for me (I kept thinking there was another stage.) There will be residentially challenged people in there which is fine but when you get closer to them they become very quiet so it makes it a wee bit scary. I'm sure they're harmless, they left us alone.

Haunted Forest was well marked too and the most fun due to the eerie forest. We went last November with a group of 9. None of us had any ticks after.

Good luck with them all and I'll watch for your logs. =)
