I looked up both caches and they seem to be both findable and in place.

I will put them both on my watchlist.

Ok guys I'm a bad owner. I left the area in Feb. it was low on my
priority list but I still have GCTZ91 and GCV0PY out there. both are
activly getting people to stop by but from the log traffic it looks as
if OMC Brown stone is in need of a check up. Unfortunatelly the drive
from Korea is preventing that. So now it is in the front of my mind and
was wondering if anyone would be interested in addopting a hide?

Hi Dave,

I'm at Ft Ord around three times a week biking. I can swing by and
check on the containers too. I hope things are going well for you
guys. Hope you get home soon.

I've very sorry to hear of Bud's/50sumtin's passing. These things are
always hard, but doubly so when it's unexpected. My thoughts are with
his family and friends.

Please post when the memorial cache has been set up, I'd love to come
down from San Jose and pay my respects.

the cat is out of the bag!

http://thegba.net/forum/viewtopic.php?p=63806#63806

hi all:

betsy fessler (the buggy bunch) and i spent sunday scouting-out a rally course for the central california coastal area.

you heard right: i'm planning a geocache rally for california!

unalike the rally i used to produce in nevada this rally will not be the exclusive territory of 4-wheelers. in fact, several times during the scouting trip that we took yesterday, betsy said: "this road would be great in a sports car!" indeed, the roads we traveled on would be great to tour in a sports car, roadster, street rod, sedan, truck or even motorcycle.

the new, as yet to be named, rally will be similar to the rally i used to produce in that it will be geocaching-based and will be a friendly competition. but, instead of being a navigational rally, each turn of the route will be given to every team. the challenge in this rally will be finding the caches.

now, before you die-hard off-roaders think the cheese has slid off of my cracker for producing a strictly paved rally: hold on!

did you not see that betsy of the buggy bunch was part of this operation?
there will be a section of 2-star dirt road with an alternate paved section for those who may not want to rip the underside out of their bugatti veyron (most geocachers own a veryron, right?) out from underneath them. both paved and unpaved sections will have caches of equivalent value.

there is still a lot of work that needs to be done to pull of an event like this, so keep an eye out for future announcements.

at this time we are looking at a mid-march date, but that may change as we look at what's on our plate.
it will also be a while before we can begin accepting entries as we do not know what we are going to have to charge for entry fees; we still need to find out what insurance is going to cost us, what porta potties are going to cost, etc.

we also need to find out what gc.com is going to require from us since this is a new rally, not one with a history.

what we do know: the giant compendium of rules used in my previous rallies is not going to be used. look for the rules to fit on something slightly larger than the head of a pin. there will be rules but they will not be difficult to understand and have a great time. most rules will be regarding motor vehicle rules and how the rally is scored.

we also know: even though this rally is going to be much simpler to run than my previous rallies, we are still going to need a handful of volunteers to make it run smoothly. one such volunteer we need is somebody who can score, or create an easy to use scoring software, for us. since the rally and rules will be much simpler, so will the scoring.

we still have a lot of work to do but a lot of time in which to do it.

i just wanted to put this out there and let you know what is on the horizon.

and to whet your appetites for adventure: i have uploaded a few pictures to my online photo album.

oh, and here's a little tease: we are already looking at a route much closer to the bay area for a second rally. and since this type of rally is much easier to prepare and produce, we are even discussing doing two events a year; one down around the central coast and another up around the bay area.

i hope you will be able to join us!

i personally checked it on snopes and added the "wanted sign."

Welcome to all new geocachers or new to CCGCA yahoogroup!

I am one of 3 active moderators for this group. The owner of the
group is redtroll2. Are you out there redtroll2? :) He formed the
group after holding a very nice CITO event in Seaside, April 2004. I
joined the group after seeing redtroll2 again at my summer geocaching
picnic in Scotts Valley, June 2004, then later formed my own Santa
Cruz Geocachers yahoogroup.

The logo you see on the home page of both yahoogroups was designed by
some of the first geocachers along the Central Coast. Raygun_88 has
since moved away, but coralgeo is still here and one of this group's
moderators and a Charter Member of www.geocaching.com! Cool, huh.

It's so great to see geocaching expanding in our areas. For one
thing it means I can get out there and geocache some more after
finding everything in my area and taking a long break.

Feel free to introduce yourselves to the group and ask questions.
The primary geocaching "guru" for CCGCA is Touchstone aka: Mike. How
many caches have you hidden so far? I can't keep count! Most of his
caches are way too challenging for my abilities but are said to be
immensely enjoyable. How is that for a plug? :D

Happy New Year! Be safe and have fun geocaching!

several weeks before gbes announced that they would not be producing an off road rally for 2009 i had already begun plans of creating a new rally to be introduced in 2010.

now that it has been announced that gbes will, indeed, not be running an off-road rally, i have been discussing moving up the time frame to october 2009.

lemme back up a bit:

my reason for creating a new rally was simple: i love doing it!

also, during the i'll-fated period when i was living in california, there was a big hole left for a competition rally in an off-road setting.

it wasn’t long before rrinnv and i and willbeee and i were out exploring the deserts of nevada and i started to think: “wouldn’t this be a great rally course!”

so, here was my original idea for a new rally in nevada:
create a one-day (day into night) rally to be run in may of 2010 with streamlined rules and more creativity in placing/hiding caches and the types of caches used.

as a second event i was considering an annual invitational rally for each fall.

the spring event would be open to anyone with the appropriate vehicle with a maximum of 40 teams.

the fall invitational was going to be limited to just 15 entries; initiations would be distributed to previous rally competitors.
at this time i have explored 5 possible rally routes with 3 or 4 other routes waiting to be scouted.

it would take a little effort, but i am confident that i can have a rally ready for october 2009, since i have about the same amount of time to organize it as i did when i was building the old rallies.

but, i need a commitment from teams that they will compete this fall.

fees will be around $120 for a two-person team, plus $60 for each additional team member.

3 categories will compete and there will be 3 champions for each rally:
    2-person team
    3-person team
    4-person team
2-person teams will not compete against 3- and 4-person teams or vice-versa. there will be no overall champions.

the rally would begin on an early saturday afternoon (1pm-2pm) and run into the dark with the first car arriving at the finish line at around 10pm and a dinner break, included in the entry fee, around the mid-point.

my new long range annual rally plans are:
october, 2009: fall in rally (limit: 15 teams)
may, 2010: nevada ghost town rally (limit: 40 teams)
october, 2010 fall invitational rally (limit: 15 teams)
may, 2011 tba rally (limit: 40 teams)
october, 2011 fall invitational rally (limit: 15 teams)
what i need to begin preparing to run an event this october is a commitment from at least 10 teams that they will compete.

so, who’s interested?

oh, i’m also going to need volunteers to help run the actual rally.

hello rally teams and volunteers:

until we can afford to get a real website, i have set up a blog for the nevada rally to keep everyone informed as to what’s up: http://nevadarally.blogspot.com/

btw: thank you for your great response!  i think i got as many responses as we have available entries.

i have not yet set the date in stone.  but, i’m almost certain it is going to be oct. 10.

i have communicated with roadrunner (the nevada cache approver) and there appears to be no issues with groundspeak or geocaching.com.

speaking of gc.com: as in previous rallies that i have produced, you can expect between 40 and 60 loggable caches from the event cache to the various rally caches: route caches, progressive caches, mystery caches, multi-caches, adventure caches, extreme caches and checkpoint bonus caches.

i will have entry forms available in the coming week.

don’t forget: the nevada rally: fall inaugural is limited to just 15-teams!

cache you later,

well, the poll i conducted indicates that most california cachers have no interest in the geocoin mega event scheduled for oct. 10 in salt lake city.  i am, however, being petitioned in private emails by some cachers to choose another date.

so, i've just listed yet another poll on the nevada rally blog asking your date preference.

you'll have 4 choices:
  • oct. 3
  • oct. 10
  • oct. 17
  • any date
please, take a moment to place your vote asap!

once that is done i can begin finalizing the event.

thank you for your assistance in settling this issue.

hi rally teams and volunteers:

the poll to put in your $.02 on the date of this fall's nevada rally ends this monday.  if the date really matters to you: get over to the nevada rally blog and place your vote.

your choices are:
  • oct. 3, 2009
  • oct. 10, 2009
  • oct. 17, 2009
  • any saturday in october, 2009
speaking of dates in october: i have just learned that a 100 mile bicycle race has been scheduled for october 3, which is the date that is leading in the poll at this time.  with a limit of just 15 teams for the october rally, i'm fairly sure this will not affect the number of rooms available on that weekend.  it may, however, affect the room rate for that weekend.  if you think this will conflict with the rally: get over to the rally blog and change your vote.

also new today on the blog: what participants have said about rallies produced by the nevada rally team.  recall what you said about your rally experience and see what others had to say theirs.  some of them are quite fun to read!

i have been working on the entry blanks for the rally and will have them available soon after we settle on the date.

i will give everyone advanced notice of when those entry blanks will be available for download.  with only 15 teams permited in the fall rally, the number of available entries will not last long.  payment must accompany your entry form and available entries will be first-come: first-served.  for this first rally payment will need to be made by check or money order onlysorry for the inconvenience - we'll be much more business-like by the spring '10 rally.  i promise!

i'm pretty certain that the entry fees for the october rally will be $125 for two-person teams, plus $65 for each additional member, up to four team members.  certainly, that will be firmed-up by the time i release forms.  i'm still looking at foodcosts for the remote meal, included in the entry fee.

i've been developing another type of checkpoint bonus.  i'm not yet sure if it will be offered in addition to the traditional checkpoint bonus caches or as an alternative.  you will have plenty of time to bone-up on the method when i have all the possiblities worked out.

you can also expect a greater variety of caches.  in addition to traditional route caches and multi-caches, we will be adding puzzle caches that will require a little more brainpower than previous rallies and there will be progressive caches: we'll give you the locat. of the first progressive cache.  the locat. of the second prog. cache will be the first prog. cache's codeword, and so on.  we are still finallizing the course as weather permits, but if it works out like i hope, you will see the return of adventure caches.

all team members, including drivers, are eligable to hunt for all caches, except checkpoint bonus caches.

the rulebook is still being edited, but i expect to be able to make it available to you in the next week or two.  if you have competed in the gbes rallies that i have produced, you will be very familiar with the rules.

i'm also working on trophies and awards for each competition category.

have a great weekend!

Did the drofrockology send his email through the yahoo group site? If so, is
there any type of filter process yahoo offers to prevent that type of
attachment? That email attachment was completely innappropriate for any
geocaching site or group. Thanks for any answers in advance.

Pics of topless women attached to an email from the group isn't innappropriate?  I don't expect that kind of attachment to come from a geocaching group especially when I open it expecting to see something caching related and with my daughter with me.  Different standards I guess.

For the record, the good Dr. contacted me the following day, asking in a quite
contrite fashion, what his offense was. I explained the .jpg image and the
generally held belief that we follow the same rules of posting on the group that
would be expected on our bigger brethren, the GBA and GC.com.

The Dr. was quite shocked that the picture was posted, and seemed to imply that
it was intended as a private email for a friend.

I accept that explanation and consider the matter closed. I've met Monty at a
couple of Events and have known him to be quite honest in his dealings and an
ardent supporter of Geocaching in general. I have no reason to doubt his
explanation. He has since moved back to Nevada and did not ask to be reinstated
to the group.

To answer the question though....I don't believe there is a way to filter images
on the group, just as there is probably no way to filter out images on the GBA
or GC.com. It normally takes some human intervention to delete such posts, just
as it would take some judgment to determine if a post was offensive or not
(although there is some filtering capabilities on the Forums for the "George
Carlin" like, 7 dirty words). I believe the spam type postings get sent only to
the Officers of the group, which are generally not from members of the group,
but come from some outside source.

Just an FYI, but we have three officers I believe, who include myself, Coralgeo
and Gabrielle.

The originator of this group, was a High School student (soon off to college I
imagine), who has since moved on to other interests :Red Troll (aka Compass
Bearing North). He even has a few active caches out there :)
