While hiking at Point Lobos today, we talked with the Rangers about
their policy on Geocaches in the park. It was my understanding that
State Parks are okay for caching but Federal are not. Point Lobos is a
State Reserve, so I wanted to clarify for myself before putting a
cache in that 'perfect' spot. We were told that the Rangers remove
them when they find them off the trails because they don't want people
going off trail. The head ranger is also concerned about the
wildlife when a cache turns into litter. Just wanted to pass the info
along as it explains why caches seem to go missing there.

So if you can place a cache that can be found with your feet still "on the trail" will they leave it?

I suspect the same thing is happening at Garapata.

If talking with rangers I would make the point that it is more
important to petition geocaching.com for archive than to remove the
cache. Removing the cache without removing the listing means people
searching for the cache end up trampling a larger area in their
fruitless search. If there is something to find people will not trample
as much because they quit trampling stuff when they make the find.
Consequently -- as far as the landscape is concerned -- a listing with
no cache is worse than a cache.

In my opinion people hiding caches in parks should always place within
reach of the trail and clearly state in the description that no
bushwhacking is required. Reminders to carry out trash and be
respectful of delicate ground cover can't hurt.

Just how do these incorrect notions get started?  Caches don't turn into litter.  They have owners who care for them,
and in the rare cases when the owners abandon them they are usually adopted, or are removed.  Only in very rare cases
do they turn into litter.  Certainly they would pale in comparison to actual litter (probably by 10,000 to 1, I would estimate).

Now, I've seen some caches disguised as litter, but they don't last long usually, because they get picked up by muggles
(especially if the litter it's disguised as can be recycled for money ;) )

Hi Fox51,

In general State Parks have been fine with cache placements,
although I suspect it is not an issue at the top of their agenda.
In addition, each Park/Reserve belongs to a District, and it is the
Head Ranger for the District that sets the Policy for the Parks that
they manage. In Monterey (which Point Lobos is part of), the
District Office is out on Garden Road. If you want a more
definitive answer before placing a cache, I would suggest contacting
the District Office. Chatting with Rangers on the trail can result
in wrong answers and incorrect assumptions, as Marky pointed out.

As far as Federal Lands are concerned, the only agencies that have
specifically banned caching are the National Park Service, and the
National Wildlife Refuges. To the best of my knowledge, Pinnacles
National Monument is the only NPS managed land in Monterey County,
and the only NWR is the Salinas River NWR near the Dole Plant on Hwy
1 where it crosses the Salinas River. To complicate matters a bit,
Fort Ord BLM has imposed an Emergency Moratorium on all new cache
placements while they evaluate Geocaching on the lands that the BLM
manages out there.

Our experience at Point Lobos: It is the case that a
ranger at Point Lobos is repeatedly (4-5 replacements
so far) removing one of our caches because that ranger
does not like it there. The cache is on-trail and
within the fenced trail boundary along the Whaler's
Cove trail. The other caches in the park remain
unmolested, indicating that the ranger just happened
upon this one and has not bothered to identify all
cache locations within that park, but returns to see
if this one has been replaced so that they can remove
it again. The ranger has not contacted us to ask us
not to replace the cache, but has instead made a
flippant comment to another hiker "yeah, I know about
geocaching, I've got 5 of them sitting in my desk" and
continues to remove the caches as they get replaced.
It is very frustrating, as it is totally allowed and
within bounds, but we cannot even work with this
person since they'd rather be passive/aggressive...

sounds like you need to discuss this with the ranger instead of replacing the cache.

perhaps all it would take to get him off of your back and get your caches returned, and replaced, is just a little face to face.

he probably thinks you're the bad guy in this situation.

Does anyone want the briefcase style container used at W.A.V. ?

It has come into my possession.

Gasket is damaged, but an enterprising cacher stasher could probably
make repairs. The case is hard black plastic. Marked GEOCACHING.COM on
one side. Might be best used for a cache site sheltered from rain and
direct sun. The case would probably not be watertight even with a good
repair job on the gasket. Exposure to UV does not seem to have made the
plastic brittle - yet. But plastic is plastic - might be better to
avoid direct sun.

And no, I don't want to use it myself! Not that I don't want to
contribute to the caches around Monterey - I am working on a series of
caches. I plan to place and maintain my caches in a zero-emissions
fashion - and this case is just too bulky for hauling around on a road
bike.

got some great sunset pics in there too.  note the thumbnail moon in the last 5, or so, sunset pics.  beautiful day but a little misty with temps around 70°.  the waterfalls were pretty cool, too!

grabbed this bug from a great view of the famous bixby bridge.

the real treat came when i looked at the bug's history: it was deposited in my brother's travel bug hotel (which is a memorial to our mother) in fallon, nevada that was left there by our friend 4wheeler in 2004 after the inaugural gbes geocahcing and navigational rally, which ivan and i created, and retrieved later in the day by our friends rock&crystal, who also participated in the first of the gbes rallies.

how cool is that?

i'll post pics soon and may have something special in mind for this bug.

thanks!

Hi christine_and_emma,

Although I love this board, it's not particularly busy as far as chat
goes. I'd hate to have you feel unloved ;) If you'd like to find some
caching partners, I have a couple of suggestions:

1. The Geocachers of the Bay Area (www.thegba.net), is probably the
largest and busiest Forum for our area. There are tons of parents with
little ones just like you. They are usually organizing stuff nearly
every week, albeit, mostly in the San Jose and Bay Area. I'm sure
you'd get a warm welcome by the crowd up there, and probably some
offers to get together.

2. Attending an Event is another good way to meet people. It just so
happens that there is a CITO Event over at Pinnacles National Monument
coming up in March, hosted by...ahem...Me! All kidding aside, it
appears that it will be a fairly well attended Event if you're in to
such things. The work part of the Event is very kid friendly
(basically pulling weeds and playing in dirt). If you're not into the
camping aspects of the Event, you can certainly come over for the day.
Check the Calender of Events on Geocaching.com and I'm sure you can
find other Events within an hour or so drive at least once a month.

Best of luck,
Mike and Ian(8)
aka Touchstone and Swift Eagle

Hi there,

I'm Wolf Grrl from Central Valley Geocachers.  I have an idea that would involve all California Cachers.  Thanks for letting me be a part of your forum.  Here's my idea, let me know what you think:

Texas Caching Regions put on a Texas Challenge every year.  I hear so many great stories about them.  There hasn't been one person that hasn't had a good time.  Each year a different region hosts/plans/organizes.  It's pretty cool.  They will have coins and tshirts made up to sell.  They have hunting teams where each region has a team of cachers that will go find the caches at the event.  The organizers of the region can not tell their home team where those caches are.  There are trophies for 1st, 2nd and 3rd place.  It's a big competition between the regions.  There is a silent auction.  There is Camp Little Cachers (I just made the name up) where people volunteer for the day (shifts of course) to have activities and crafts to keep all the little cachers busy so moms and dads don't have to worry about them.  There is so much more.
Why not have California do a California Challenge?  We would have to decide how to divide the state up and form a committee which I would be more than happy to be a part of.  I think it would be a blast and definitely a worthwhile event.  Is any one gamed?  How can we spread the idea and get how our fellow Californian Cachers feel about the idea?  I do not know how to insert hyperlinks into these forums so I just copied and pasted the event page and the forum from Houston.
Share your thoughts, suggestions, opinions so we can get the ball rolling for one next year!

hi wolf grrl, i'm monty wolf (aka dr. of rockology).

i'm not much of a forums-kind-of-guy, gut i imagine the best way to get the word out across the state is by using the groundspeak forums.

i cannot make any promises to help out at this time as i'll be moving to socal in the not-too-distant-future.  but, i'm not yet sure when that will be.

i do, however, think it's a groovy idea!

iGoogle is one obvious choice:

http://www.google.com/ig?hl=en&referrer=ign_n

and babblefish.com, although I've heard that online traslators can
make kind of a hash on the grammar, I would think for a simple
translation of three words, like you're doing, it would be adequate.

Google did give the following Japanese translation in Kanji:

•½˜aˆ¤‚ÌK•Ÿ

Hope that helps, and good luck,

Never tried igoogle, I'll have a look.

Previous experience is that things like babelfish are likely to create confusion.

Translating "Love" is especially fraught with danger because English uses the same word for love in the fatherly sense as well the romantic/erotic sense. Other languages have separate words for romantic love and that sisterly or parental thing.

I only trust babelfish if I can translate a word, then take that and translate it back to English getting as a result whatever I started with. When that test is applied babelfish rarely passes.

That is why I am hoping for assistance of native speakers!

Thanks for the lead.

Wayne

I have a room reserved in Rocklin nights of May 23 and 24.

I plan to drive a roadster up on the 23rd, particpate in geowoodstock
on the 24th, geocache in Auburn State Recreation Area on the 25th,
arriving back in Monterey LATE on the 25th.

Would consider some adjustment of plans if someone wishes to carpool.

Option: one person who can pack really really light might accompany me
in two seater with top down.
Option: I could take a different vehicle which would hold three
passengers and weekend bags.
Option: I ride with you and contribute some $ for gas.
Option: everyone takes their own vehicle but plan to travel in a group
or rendezvous for selected activities.

Saving money is not my primary objective - it is more about camaraderie
and keeping down on the greenhouse gases.

it's tricky.... Shalom, Ohev, Sameach would be the literal translation, but nobody would really say that. Love isn't really a word in Hebrew.... (weird, right?)   Shalom and Sameach would be enough on their own.

I have a question, though,  do you know how to write out  "Peace, Love, Happiness" in Hebrew??

It's for a geocaching (gps treasure hunt) listing that a friend is trying to do.

Thanks,

I have a friend who is Japanese and speaks it well.  She's only been in the states 10 years.  I will ask her for help.  She also speaks French, so I can get that too!

I have been hiding a few caches. All are intended to be roughly
identical except for the language of the title.

I could use help (or leads for free/cheap help) in translating "Peace
Love and Happiness" into additional languages.

Any written language is a candidate.

Especially interested in help from someone who can assist in
translation into Hebrew, Hindi, Cyrillic or other glyphs. Example:
Japanese is often expressed in the Western Alphabet for our
convenience. But in Japan Japanese would normally be expressed in those
characters which I believe are called "Kanji"

Thanks,

Hey Stacey,

Interesting.

If possible please show the attached jpg to your pal and ask if that changes their answer.

Also very interested in knowing if your pal can supply the answer in Hebrew alphabet (letters like in the attached BMP file.)

Thanks,
Wayne

I had a room reserved in Rocklin nights of May 23 and 24.

Then I realized this would be Memorial Day weekend and Monday the
26th is a Federal Holiday. Because that means I won't need to be back
in Monterey until the morning of the 27th I extended my reservation
in Rocklin by one day.

I plan to drive a roadster up on the 23rd, particpate in geowoodstock
on the 24th, geocache in Auburn State Recreation Area on the 25th,
geocache some more on the 26th - probably in or around Auburn State
Recreation Area, arriving back in Monterey LATE on the 26th.

Would consider some adjustment of plans if someone wishes to carpool.

Option: one person who can pack really really light might accompany me
in two seater with top down.
Option: I could take a different vehicle which would hold three

We are going to be up there, too!! I will be working the Pathtag Table
from 3-5 on Saturday. We are staying at the Orchid Suites, checking
out Sunday, but when we get up there we are seeing if we can extend
until Monday.

We will also be attending the Friday Night Meet and Greet. There is
also a geocoin event planned for Saturday night at one of the other
hotels (not sure of the top of my head) that I will probably be
attending. Tigsurfn is going to try to do some night caching after the
Friday Night event. We don't konw what we are doing on Sunday.

I do know that on Monday there is a breakfast together somewhere down
99 or 5, I can't remember that either. (ARGH).

I'll have to be on the lookout for you. The Saturday night geocoin
event sounds interesting. I'll go to that if I get info on where it is
located and the hours it is scheduled.
