I could put 20 caches outside of the Pinnicles with NO problem at all between Tres Pinos and the turn off and be perfectly legal in doing so.

Regarding the lack of caches in Pinnacles, this sentence from the
geocaching.com website probably sums it up:

You will be in violation of federal regulation by placing a cache

National Park regulations are intended to protect the fragile
environment, and historical and cultural areas found in the parks.

There ARE earthcaches there though, and I totally look forward to
checking them out.

We are looking forward to the fun of hunting some more of your
caches. Please just save us a cache-hiding spot in "downtown"
Tres Pinos . We don't have any caches ready-to-go, but we have
two spots in mind. If you have 10 or so spots further down the
road, this will be quite a trip !

Think you are good with 40 minutes from Tres Pinos to
Pinnacles - we have made it in 45min, without rushing, from
Hollister (south edge of town) to pay-station at entrance to
Pinnacles Nat'l Monument. Cachers will have to wait to pick up
the enroute caches on the way back !! Cannot stress enough that
we need to get there early if anyone is going to survive hiking in
the heat we can expect by the end of March. But even after a hard
day, a dozen or two caches on the way home will stir up some
fresh energy.
Figure the entrance gate / pay station will be open when we get
there. Depending on how crowded is the park that morning, we
would prefer to gather at the Bear Creek visitor's center, which is
one of the earthcaches (just sign the guestbook) and a good
place to fill water bottles, use restroom, etc. If we get sent to
overflow-parking, we will have to hike up to Bear Creek anyways
to get started on the trail to the other earthcaches.

I am alway glad to comply for you, as well as mystify with my caches when I can. I don't think one person should do all of the caches. It would be good to get volunteers so that several people can "Show their stuff". How about 4 (people/group-teams) volunteering to put 3 -4 caches out each. Bud, if you would like for me to coordinate this for your event I would be honored. Let me know

ps There is a small monument on the west side of Tres Pinos that is naked - but I didn't see it - Really

It is too bad we can't have a Worker of Wood style cache perp session for those coming who are not up to walking in the mountains but we might get beat up by the Rangers for releasing spray paint propellent into the atmosphere or something.

Thank you so much for the coordinates!
I thgink that we are set on the east side and the Verona Cafe. I
will allow an hour from the cafe to the Park trail head.

Thank you all for your caching enthusiasm!

I think that the "geoevent" will have it's hands full with camping
at the private campground, meeting at the Veanda Cafe, meeting at
the Visitor's Center, and hiking in the Pinnacles on Saturday.

Based on the threads, I will allow for one hour between leaving the
Veranda Cafe (9:30) and starting the 10-mile hike at the Visitor's
Center (10:30) which should leave at least 8 hours of daylight for
the hike set for the end of March pre-Daylight Savings Time.

FYI: to qualify as a geoevent, I probably CANNOT reference the
finding of caches as part of the event if I want to get the event
qualified as a geoevent.

That said, anyone who wishes to place caches to "enhance" the before
and after event possibilities is free to do so! After all, there is
the Friday before and the Sunday after the event unaccounted for ...

Again, thank you for your enthusiasm and support!

Hi Bud,
I wish to participate in the hike, but I am not sure I am up to a 10 mi hike in one day. That's quite a bit for us ole farts. I am usually huffing and puffing on a .3 mi cache walk and am concerned that it would be too much for me. The north trail was 3.5 mi and I had reservations about that.

Hi, Dave!

The event was VERY specifically written to be VERY wide open for who could log this as an attended event.

You do not need to do the 10-mile hike to log the event. In fact, just meeting at the Visitor Center qualifies!

I do look forward to meeting you!

FYI: I just received a snail-mail package from "Yosemite National
Park" for CITO volunteer dates.

I just e-mailed the volunteer coordinator that I (we:us:geocachers)
would be interested in a (CITO) group park volunteer event for the
weekend of May 5-7, 2006.

This event should be similar to the VERY successful event that
Touchstone organized for last fall, which was very fun. (We attended
and met a lot of great geocachers! But more importantly, we gave
back to Yosemite Park!)

The commitment will be to clean out campfire pits for Saturday
morning. In exchange, attendees would get:

1) FREE park access to Yosemite for the week and
2) FREE camping in the Yellow Pine Campground (in the Great Meadow!)
for Friday and Saturday nights (which is very cool.)

I will submit a geocache description ASAP after if/when the co-
ordinator approves. (I will fax the required form Monday.)

As always, any feedback is appreciated.

Qualification for attendance to the CITO will be strictly limited to
Campfire clean-up with the group Saturday.

Is there any interest in the group in participating in a CITO at the

All eight of the caches I set out have been approved for the Pinnacles March, even the one REALLY close to the gate. If it is less than a 10 mi hike in one day, I would be interested in a CITO it is just us ole farts can't do that much. I still have to be able to get up on Monday and go to work.

Time, tides and weather wait for no one.

Well, I'm keeping an eye on the weather forecast for Saturday versus
Sunday for this weekend.

As a veteran of a couple of rafting trips in the Alaska wilderness,
if the forecast were only for rain I would just carry on with our
current plans for a Saturday hike in the Pinnacles and enjoy getting
a little wet as a change of pace.

Unfortunately there is some discussion of a chance of thunderstorms
in some of the forecasts that I've read and that Touchstone has seen.

Being a safety manager, from a safety standpoint, if the forecast for
a chance of thunderstorms continues to hold up, we should postpone
the hiking part of the event for the sake of safety as being out in
open country during thunderstorms involves some risk of being struck
by lightning.

Right now the forecast for Sunday is much much better.

For those of you watching this forum, how many would rather breakfast
and hike on Sunday instead? (That actually works out better for me
and my family anyway.) I would still be willing to meet Saturday for
breakfast for those that would like to, and then again on Sunday
before a Sunday hike.

Please post replies at your convenience either to this forum or to
the cache page for this event on www.geocaching.com.

Thank you for your understanding, but I have an obligation to watch
out for our safety which very much comes first.

Sincerely yours,

Bud 50sumtin

NOTE FOR THOSE COMING SUNDAY: bring flashlights, and bring Tevas or
a second pair of shoes that you can use to walk through water. We
successfully adventured through the Caves to the other side without
mishap barefoot but I could have led a full and happy life without
the experience!

One other recommendation I have (besides the Tevas and flashlights)
would be to leave a shuttle car at the Cholone Picnic Area so we can
shuttle drivers back to the Visitor Center from there to shorten the
hike back by a mile or so.

See you Sunday!

Subject: Pinnacles 2: VIP Fools with Tools, Picnic and Hike
fiftysumtin
Send Email Send Email

For those that missed the March Pinnacles event, or for those who are
interested in helping out the Park, I am submitting a cache request
for the following Event for Saturday, April 29:

Please participate in a Volunteer in the Park (VIP) Project at the
Pinnacles Chalone Creek Picnic Area. Picnic and hike to follow if
there is interest.

I have been in contact with the Volunteer Coordinator for the
Pinnacles National Park for a Volunteer Project.

The Volunteer Project coordinator would like to have at least 10
people who are handy with basic tools (wrenches, screwdrivers, etc.)
help erect a play strucuture at the Chalone Creek Picnic Area.

The Park will supply tools, but you may want to bring your own. I
have looked over the Assembly Drawings and this does not look too
difficult.

If there is interest, we can have a picnic afterwards and finish the
day with a hike in the Park. There is a very easy trail of about 3
miles from Chalone Creek Picnic Area to the Caves (which would
collect 2 earthcaches and 1 virtual cache.) With Daylight Savings
Time, if time allows, we could do a loop up to the High Peaks as well
and catch more of the earthcaches.

Wildflowers should be in full bloom by then. too.

Until I get more details, let's assume that we will start between
8:30 am and 9 am.

Camping should still be available at the nearby private campground
for that weekend for those that want to camp and have a short drive
into the Park in the morning. But you should make reservations soon.
If there is enough interest I could look into a group reservation.

You can log this Event as Attended if you do any of the following:

1) Help erect the play structure.
2) Join in a picnic lunch afterwards
3) Join in a hike afterwards.

I will try to arrange for free entrance to the Park.

I will add more details later as I get them.

Howdy all,

it us us, oldtimers AltDotAir, checking back in. We've been somewhat
inactive the last couple of years due to child-rearing distractions
combined with a most definitively dead (and as yet unreplaced) GPS
unit. But I was happy to see there's a more organized group on line
now for the CCGC.

Great to hear from you Matt. I sure can commiserate about the dead
GPS. I thought I'd killed mine about a year ago crossing the Carmel
River and falling into a sucker hole up to my chest, but it finally
gave up the ghost on a trek out to Ventana Double Cone a couple of
weeks ago.

Just an FYI: This group was started by another old timer,
compass_bearing_north. There is also a reasonably active group up in
Santa Cruz:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/GeocachingSantaCruz/

It might be worth your time to join that group as well, as the two
groups overlap on quite a few things like hikes and Events. That
group is headed up by Chikasaw and the spiritual leader of both
groups, Coralgeo. Both groups use the familiar CCGC logo made by
Raygun_88 a few years back.

And don't worry about not having a GPS. There's one member of this
group that I know of that found nearly a hundred caches before he
finally bought one ;)

Spiritual leader??? LOL

Don't know if I can claim that ;-)

Good to hear from you again, Matt. Hope to see you and the family at the Spring
Forward
picnic event in Santa Cruz this Sunday.

Hi Matt,

We commiserate with your GPS problem. We logged on
last Sat to get coords for the Pinnacles event and
found our new OS did not support the software
installed in our GPS. We messed with it for a while
(making us miss the meeting times of the event)
finally gave up and went to the event without the GPS.
We finally uploaded new software this morning so we
will be set if we manage to make it to the SC event
tomorrow.

There was a NO FIND post today for Veteran's Cache -- the oldest cache
in the entire Central Coast -- from a conscientious finder who was
scared off by the NO TRESPASSING signs. We're not the owners of this
cache but have been guardian angels of it from time to time, and below
is the note I posted to the cache page.

Matt (Alt of AltDotAir)

note about the NO TRESPASSING signs.

The city of Monterey got a permanent easement on the use of this green
space by the public three decades ago when it allowed the development
above the trail in question. This allows the public to walk around
this area as an extension of the park's greenway, including the area
where the cache is.

Part of the homeowner's association is in a dispute with the City of
Monterey about who pays for the maintenance and fire-control brush
cutbacks of this particular stretch of greenway. The matter is in a
lawsuit right now, and the city is extremely likely to win. However,
as a sort of "in your face" move, the homeowner's assocation put up
"no trespassing" signs in the area for which there is a dispute. These
signs are, to the best of my knowledge, completely illegal, and the
local residents below the hill have virtually all complained to the
city about them. Off the record, the city officials tell us the signs
are going to go ASAP and they're just as annoyed as we are, but on the
record, they can't comment because of the pending litigation. The
"ASAP" is apparently as soon as the lawsuit makes its way through the
courts.

Is it trespassing? NO. Is it obvious to the gentle impact cacher? No.
My applause to the cachers who are being respectful of the signs. IMHO
-- fwiw, and take that with whatever grain of salt you must -- these
NO TRESPASSING signs are just as illegal and annoying as graffitti,
and should be given considerably less attention. So, I say, go and
find this cache, which is the oldest one in the entire central coast.
The likelihood of your being arrested for trespassing is (again, IMHO
fwiw) certainly close to nil.

I have three reserved tickets remaining from a 6-pack for the Jimmy Buffet
concert on
Tuesday April 25 8pm at the Shoreline Amphitheatre. Section 204, Row L. These
are actual
hard tickets, not TicketFast email receipts. Net cost to me was $145 each, and
includes $4
parking fee. Would love to have some Geocaching-Parrotheads join the fun! PM me
for more
info. -Coralgeo

There hasn't been much activity on this board for a while so I thought I'd post
a message and
direct everyone to an event being held this summer. Expert Geocachers Badge
(GCWV45) will
be hosted by C-Major and friends on Aug 12. Check it out -- looks like fun!

If you missed out on getting your GJTB, I happen to know that there
will be a few at the Ord EGB Event (GCWV45) on Sat that will be
raffled off.
If your not interested in GJTBs come out anyway it should be fun.

Hello all:
I just wanted to mention how happy I was to be able to attend this
event, mostly for getting to know more geocachers and caching
together afterwards. But I also ended up with 2 GJTBs to drop in
caches. WooHoo! Oh, but I didn't win anything in the raffle. ;-) I
arrived at 10:30 so missed all the early event excitement (ie:
Expert training, finding 6 caches without gps, finish line dash
accident). I've been reading everyone's logs for those finds and
the event and it sounded really fun. Thanks to all who helped make
the day! I look forward to the next event.
