The Chesapeake Battle Group is an R/C Big Gun Warship Combat Club. Big Gun Warship Combat is a hobby where we build and battle radio controlled, 1/144 scale warships (1 inch = 12 feet). The models must be of real ships, that were laid down between 1900 and 1946, inclusive. The ships are armed with CO2 cannon of varying caliber, from bb (0.177) to 1/4 inch. Hence, the Big Gun name! The ship's hulls are constructed of balsa wood skin over fiberglass support structures. To simulate damage control, the ships are fitted with bilge pumps. A model's armament, armor (skin) thickness, speed and pump capacity are all determined by the original ship, upon which it was modeled. When a ship gets hit, it begins to take on water. All is well, as long as the pump can keep up. However, when the flow of water overwhelms the pump, the ship sinks! But not to worry, sinking ships deploy a float so that they can be recovered, and are designed to be easily repaired, even after sinking.
As our name suggests, we are located in the Chesapeake Bay area, centering around the Washington-Baltimore Metro area.
We will be posting the upcoming battle seasons schedule. Interested parties and spectators are welcome to attend both battles and meetings.
