The major radio event in Victoria returns to the Kyneton Racecourse, only
an hour from Melbourne, Ballarat and Bendigo, on Sunday the 14th of
February.

The Centre Victoria RadioFest No. 3 will build of the major success of its
predecessor events held in 2007 and 2008 that they're still talking about.

Second-hand sales spaces (tables or carboots) are now open.

A program of interesting activities will be announced in coming months,
making it another not to miss event.

Possibly a little off-topic but still concerning radios, would anyone have or
be able to find a link to the user manual for a
VDO CR741X car radio. It is the model with a CD stacker.
The manual does not seem to be available and the only one I could find
online was in Russian.
     Regards and thanks.

Google the Maco website. They used to have all the plans etc. Not sure if it is
still up as Maco are now out of business.

I'm pro Motorola.

Also have a look at the OMDI OM-477CB, they have a c-tick (unlike the imports),
4-5 Watts and outstanding receive sensitivity.

Hi all,

I am a beginner of CB radio and I am planning to purchase a pair of handheld
radio first.

There are 2 options for me, ¡°Uniden UH064sx¡± and ¡°Motorola SX709R¡±. Both are
2W power, and almost the same price.

I did a lot of searches about these 2 radios, but did not find any useful
review. So I have no idea which one I should choose.

Is there anyone could give me some advice?

Thanks.

What I mean by no continuity is no short detected between the centre and outer
of the coax.
Today I'll check that there is continuity between the centre and outer when the
antenna is connected.(there should be, it's one of those aluminium base loaded
type aerials) the only other thing i can think of is perhaps where the length of
the antenna is adjusted has a poor connection but I doubt it given how new the
ant is and how quickly the problem arose.(overnight)
Mabee it's my meter.............
AAAAHH I hate SWR problems !

Sounds suspiciously like a "pinned coax" trick from the old days, :),
but you did say there was no continuity when you checked it so it might
be that earth at the antenna socket itself, or maybe one of the radials,
may not making good contact to the rest of setup when you put it up.

Base antennae are tricky things .. not to mention easy noticable to locals
that might be receiving lots of TVI from you and "know" what to do about
it...

Good Luck

I finally got my mast made and my aerial up (5/8 wave vertical) and made my
first contact, (9xx ? Paynesville, can't remember his exact call sign right now
but i have it written in my log.)

When tuning the antenna, I managed to get the SWR down to 1.6:1.

I've been checking the SWR each day i use it but overnight it jumped to almost
3:1 !!!!!!! I thought perhaps things had gotten a little wet from rain so i
left it to dry until the afternoon, then took the ant. down, checked all the
plugs, took the tape off from around the plug; everything looked dry. No
continuity with my multi meter, cleaned everything with CO Contact cleaner
hooked it all back up..... no difference! Almost 3:1 !!

Any ideas?

I'd suggest you listen around the dial, and when you hear a conversation call
"Breaker"
and see if you get a response.
Otherwise find someone near you who has a CB and get with them and see if you
can talk to each other,
or take it to a radio repair shop and ask them to check it for you, to see if it
is operating correctly and if it is in band.

Regards
Richard

Greetings everyone I am in Perth, Western Australia. I am desperately seeking a
good UHF CB antenna for use at home. If anyone has a spare UHF CB antenna
laying about doing nothing I can put it to good use. Please call me on my
mobile phone at anytime 0488 127 306. I can pick up any antennas that may be
available.

I will be using the antennas at home for the purpose of monitoring all UHF and
27mhz CB emergency frequencies, so if anyone can donate antennas it would be
most appreciated indeed.

It sounds like you are going in the right direction.A good antenna is critical
because it is your ears.Getting it in the the air as high as possible is also
very inportant. How much wattage are you able to use in Australia? We americans,
the rebels we are, use amplifiers, did you say that you bought a ground plane?
5/8 wave? If you want a winning combo, get a set of beams, an amp, and a powered
mic.If you want a good set of beams find a moonraker4 it was the very best in
its day.I have one , and i talk everywhere. From North Carolina, i talked to a
scientist on the south pole for about 30 minutes. Here is web site for ham and cb
antenna, radio equipment it is www.cooperelectronics.com. Happy communicating.I

Well i've managed to hear a few people on the air, reasonably strong signals,
but haven't been able to make contact. I think the whip antenna i've got on my
shed roof isn't cutting it!

Just ordered a NBS 5/8 wave (or is it 1/2 wave?!) antenna off ebay so when the
courier company get here in about 2 weeks time !!! I'll be able to test it out.
And hopefully make contact.

To anyone interested in linking CB Radio via internet (VoIP),

The Aussie based PRAIL Project – http://www.prail.org/

Gateways use Asterisk and run on a Unix like OS and in use its a lot like IRLP
for anyone that has used it.

Also there is the AU6PER UHF CB Gateway project which is EQSO based.

See http://palmbeach.dynalias.com/gateway.htm

Nothing will be able to protect you from a direct hit, lightning protection
really only works when there is a near strike. It can help and for the cost
it is worth the effort.

Theoretically you could slice a part of the outer insulation off and solder
an earth wire to it and silicone over it to protect it from water ingress.

It is important to ensure that the earth wire is heavy enough to dissipate
the energy and that you source a proper earth stake from an electrical
supplier and drive it all the way into the ground.

I'm setting up my shack and i'm wondering about lightning protection.
Are the lightning protectors on ebay (about $10 to $15 US) any good?
How do they work?
It looks as though they only protect the groundplane / coax braid side of
things?
Any tips appreciated.

Hey Sandy> Yes, beams work the best. They are a bit more expensive,But you can
point them any direction, and they direct all the rf in that direction. Here is
an idea for you. If you want an in-expensive way of getting out there.Buy a
Balun from an electronics store, some wire, and some coax cable, cut the wire to
the frequency you want to use, if you have trees next to the house, throw some
rope up over a tall limb haul the balun up, drape the sides down like an up-side
down v (inverted v) point it in the direction you want to communicate and go.
Don't forget to use your SWR meter to trim down the SWR.This type of antenna
works great, and it's cheap to make.Go to a ham radio web site and they have
antenna calculators for most types of antennas.Building antennas has always been
fun for me.They even has free designs for building antennas, like a three
element Yagi, and you can make one pretty cheap with all kinds of materials from
your local hardware
store.Oh, and to answer your question about polarity mostly verticle. The set of
beams i have Moonraker4's, you can switch frome horz to vert.If you can find a
set of these, you would be very happy.I have not got mine on top of my tower
yet, but will soon.I hope one day soon to dx with someone in Australia. It's a
very long comm shot, but possible if the conditions are right. You take care and
have fun. Wayne

I have been thinking about a beam too. Do you use them verticaly or
horizontally?
As for amplifiers, I'm thinking of getting my Amateur (ham) licence so i can do
it legally.
Thanks for the tips.
