Re: [CaseGT] Re: Ingersoll 4020 multiple questions

Bill,

I can attest to the importance of getting the deck properly leveled.  I have a LH 60" deck that I used for several years and was very pleased with it but then I purchased a 4020 with power steering and had to get a RH discharge deck.  When I first started using it I had problems with the drive belt popping off and, instead of figuring out the problem right away, I'd just put it back on and keep mowing until I sliced up two new belts that way.  I finally got around to checking the level and found the deck was tilted way too far forward
so I leveled it up and haven't had a problem since.  It only cost me about $70 in belts to learn that lesson.

Bart

Subject: [CaseGT] Re: Ingersoll 4020 multiple questions

Joe,

I have esentially the same deck, but a 60" LH Discharge version. If the blades are sharp and the deck is appropriately leveled, the cut will be nicer on level gound than with a 48" I used to love the way my 48" decks cut, still do. However once I got my 60" Decks (have 4 of them) properly leveled, it cuts nicer than the 48" decks. I have uneven ground on the edges of my yard and the Anti-Scalp comes in real nice. Sometimes to make the last cut work out correctly on an uneven area I need to make an extra pass. Other times the Anti-Scalp raises the deck on one side and the grass looks real nice even though it may be longer.

2 of the 4 60" decks I have gotten straightened out. Haven't had the other 2 on the tractors yet. As received, the 60" decks have generally been leaned forward and are running on the front roller, or casters. Those weren't put there for the deck to run on. Those are for Anti-Scalp. If you have the deck rolled that far forward you will not get the cut you should expect. The rollers push the grass down, then don't quite get it all back up to cut. Most, not quite all. If the deck looks to be pointed down in front - put air in your front tires of the tractor, and start cranking on the J-Bolt at the front of the more modern 60" decks. The original Case LH 60" adjusted a slightly different way. The late Case decks adjust the same way as the new RH discharge 60" decks.

Part of the reason you might think you are getting the same blade speed: The 60" decks have a lot more clearance under the front of the deck. The blades are not nearly as enclosed in the 60" deck, so the blade sound is totally dfferent than the 48", or smaller decks. The 48" and smaller have the really sweet hum to them when they are up to speed, the 60" deck runs far queiter. I hear the tractor engine a lot more with the 60" than I do with one of the smaller decks. However, I now usually prefer the cut of the 60" than the smaller ones.

This spring I put a different 60" deck on than my usual one. I had acquired another 2 big decks last year and hadn't had them on yet. I was about ready to sell the current deck after the first time I mowed the yard. It didn't pull straight behind the front of the tractor, the front wheels would drop into every divit in the yard, and drag sod when I changed directions, and I didn't like the cut I was getting. Blades were relatively sharp, but I hadn't sharpened them. The deck I had on last year wasn't doing that, so I was fast not liking the current deck. During the 2nd mowing with the deck, I got my wrenches out and started cranking on that j-Bolt, went to far, backed off a little bit, and now love the deck. Still haven't sharpened the blades, although I have hit some wood, and rocks the last 3 times I have mowed. Maybe next year/ or late summer. All of the Case decks as I know them have a habit of doing a nice job of mowing with butter knife blades. Really sharp blades look even nicer.

Bill

Joe, I have the same deck and think it cuts very well as is so I wouldn't mess with the pulley sizes. Check the blades to make sure they are sharp and not...

Joe, The blade speed should be relatively the same on the RM-60 deck as all others. I would spend some time and make sure the deck is properly leveled and...

if you're leaking all over the place in the rear, check and see if the transaxle is over filled with lube, if so you might drain it down and watch it closely,...
