great company!

Phil,
There should be more attendees than showed up last month!

I'm headed back to Omaha early Saturday morning, but hope to hear some of the
members on the bands. The 8 weeks in Portland went by fast.

I'm going to sell my 706 at Rickreal, and I can't find my HM-103 microphone for
it. Does anyone out there have one to sell, or possibly might know one who I
could contact? (New ones are $70)

I was thinking if someone replaced their original mic with a Heil or something
like that, they might have the spare HM-103.

Hello - Had a great meeting of two members. I met Ed KQ1R, for discussion.
Having been off the air since 1961, it was good to get caught up on procedural
changes, etc. He did completely set a case for me to give up my belief that, at
least the higher licenses, require a five words per minute code test. I now see
that ham radio is too big to have any "mode" requirement for the license. Much
has been added since my leaving the hobby. Bob KM7Q

If you've been off the air since '61, then you have more recently acquired your
callsign...the 2X1s, as I recall, first came available circa 1976.

There's something enthusing, finding someone who was off the air and chose to
return. Shows that the hobby has enough draw to bring people back into it.

I was mostly off the air from about '82 to '99, with the exception of two-meter
FM "drive time" during the early part of that period. When I got back on "for
good" in '99, it was my old stomping grounds. As a novice, my very first QSO
happened on 40 meter CW...so there's an old homey feeling to me about that band
and mode. But each mode has its own magic.

CW tends to be inexorably linked with QRP...QRP is where the current groundswell
of home-brew and home-designed rigs is happening. I believe there are more
homebrewers today than there were when I got my ticket in '74. CQ QRP offers
the ability to design and build very simple rigs and with a simple antenna and
no need for the added millions of transistors in a computer, world-wide QSOs can
be made. One of the sub-movements within QRP that I've stumbled across is what
is known as "minimal arts"...the construction of an entire QRP transciever with
the fewest possible components. As I recall, the record is currently set at 14
parts. That's everything - a single transistor, enough parts to make it
oscillate key-down and a clever re-biasing scheme that turns the TX oscillator
into an RX regenerative circuit on key-up.

If you have not encountered the SolderSmoke podcasts, they're worth a listen.
124 of them have now been produced, at a rate of very roughly two every month
since 2005. www.soldersmoke.com - they're mp3 files and will simply play on any
computer. Topics discussed in these audio programs are QRP, CW, SSB, digital
modes, building radios, building antennas, the culture of ham radio...you get a
really nice and comprehensive view into the world of today's tinkerers.

Wish I'd been there Saturday, sounds like a fun discussion. I had a VERY busy
weekend, and got less than half the list done, so I'm sunk for weekends for a
while....basically through Field Day.

Speaking of Field Day, if you want to join in with a good old fashioned LARGE
Field Day, the OTVARC gang will be up in Stub Stewart Park again this year.
That's out west on US26 to US47, then head north toward Vernonioa - the turnoff
is near the top of the hill, you don't go all the way to Vernonia. We had 150
attendees last year, lots of tents and antennas, plenty of opportunity to get on
the air and operate. See the club web pages www.otvarc.org and they should
start putting up some details soon.

73 and welcome back!

KM7Q here again. Yes, you got that right. I was WV6ADV in 1958, an eighth
grader who got the novice licence via a ham class in JHS. I became conditional
class WA6ADV in late 58. I let the license expire in 1968 and was off the air.
In the late 70s, I returned to tech school to gain employment in a "real job"
after teaching art photography part time. I decided then to pick up the
licenses again, since I was learning the theory for the comercial license
anyway. I took the general, advanced, and extra, and got the extra call KM7Q.
After all of that I STILL did not get on the air.

Now it IS QRP that sparked my interest. I have an Oak Hills Research OHR 100
for 40 meters, and have it set up at home, and all the gear to head out into the
woods to set up. IT IS going to be a fun summer !!

I do plan to attend field day. Thanks for Info. 73s, Bob Out

I, too, am drawn by the concept of operating out on a hilltop somewhere. I've
had wa-a-a-a-y too many home projects going on since moving here in 2005, but
have been piecing together a portable station. Slowly. I emphasize
"s-l-o-w-l-y".

I've picked up a few things to hopefully move myself toward being able to do the
real deal - a portable operation. I found a used FT-817 a few years ago. It
came in handy as a test bed for some experiments I was doing for a for-pay
project, so it was actually a tax deduction. At one of the Rickreall 'fests, I
got one of those nice padded cases by Western Case. Probably bigger than I
need, but I figured I'd start big and go smaller. A used Elecraft T2 auto-tuner
came next. I finally need a set of small paddles and will at first, make do
with a rather heavy sealed lead-acid battery. I also got some of those
lightweight 31 foot Jackite poles, which I've used for holding up wires in the
yard, just to see how they play. Definitely flimsy; 28 feet is about all I'd be
willing to use to support wires.

Anyway, one of my big projects finished recently, so perhaps this summer I'll
finally do what I've been saying I'd do, and that is go portable.

After getting acclimated to what bands do what portable, I would then replace
the FT-817 with something that's easier on batteries. The '817 does a lot, but
it's a battery hog.

One of the local radio clubs does a Field Day with more of a QRP bent than
OTVARC. Might be the Portland Amateur Radio Club. I seem to recall "QRP on
Larch Mountain" being the catch-phrase. OTVARC's Field Day is big...RVs,
trailers, but thankfully light on the generators - we use large 12V lead-acid
batteries with some solar cells and a few of those little quiet Honda 1kW
generators to charge them in rotation. I really dislike the sound of a
generator, and OTVARC sure hit on a good solution by basically using 12V batts
and having charging available.

Hello - Anyone coming to the meeting tomorrow at West Side, Tigard Location?

I am hoping to learn a bit about the 2010 field day events, what ones are the
biggest in the Portland area, when, where, what. I have a QRP setup ready to
go, but this will be my first, so the learning curve shall be fun. - Mr Bob KM7Q

Portland Amateur Radio Club, (PARC) usually has a QRP Field day at Kelly Butte. (Between Division and Powell just off I-205)  See their website at http://w7lt.org/

The West side club, Oregon Tualatin Valley Amateur Radio Club, (OTVARC) will be having their Field Day at Stewart Stubb State park West of Hillsboro.  See their Website at http://www.otvarc.org/

The East Side Club, Hoodview Amateur Radio Club, will be having their Field day at Larch Mountain, Oregon. Go to Corbett, Oregon on the rim of the Gorge adn go East. From teh Womans Forum Park and the view of Vista House it is 14 miles up the road to the Top of Larch Mountain. The club sets up in a gravel lot about 200 yds downhill of the main parking lot.  Usually a fantastic set up to check out if you are not operating yourself. See their website at http://www.wb7qiw.org/

And for those brave enough to cross the Columbia, the Clark County Club Amateur Radio Club, has Field day at the Overflow parkilng lot at SEH America on 112th Ave. north of 39th St. Usually the Hams at the Field Day site are a friendly bunch who are glad to show the public what they can do.
See their website at http://www.w7aia.org/

There are a LOT of smaller Non-club setups and operations. If you can't operate Field Day yourself, at least visit and support those who are. Introduce Non-Hams to the Emergency Operation sided of Ham Radio.

Please pass alon this Field Day info to other Hams and interested peopkle in the PDX area as well as Club emails.

I just want to assure you all that I'm still interested in keeping this group
going, and I want to make as many breakfasts as possible.

No excuses; I just need to get the job done!

Pictures tell a thousand words.

I have uploaded a photo from last year's (2009) Field Day at L.L.Stub Stewart
State Park, put on by the Oregon Tualatin Valley Amateur Radio Club (OTVARC),
running the callsign W7OTV. Go to the Yahoogroup's "photos" section...there's
only one folder, and one photo in it. The photo is taken from the south,
looking north. CW tent on the far left, VHF/UHF tent on the far right, up on
the hill. Too many antennas in between (part of FD is learning - we learned -
no more single-band HF antennas, they're a waste...they take up lots of space
with little benefit...and no more vertically-polarized antennas for a domestic
operating event). Note the cluster of people on the right - we have a
socializing tent, which should be imperative for a group effort...allows people
a place to gather and yack, without disturbing the radio operators while the ops
try to make QSOs and train newcomers.

Field Day can be many things. As an emergency preparedness exercise, it should
show that you (the collective, community "you") know how to quickly erect an
effective communications station. All exercises have a test, and that's the
contest part of Field Day - did you really put up an *effective* station, using
*effective* operators? The contest score is only that - your way of showing *to
your own group* that you knew what you were doing and really could do it in an
emergency. The "operator skill" part of Field Day is taking people who only do
one thing, and getting them to try something else. Like taking the "I'm not a
contester" guy and getting him to try out computer-sent CW, and going for rate
for a change. That's what learning is - getting outside of your own comfort
zone. For me, the learning of FD the past few years has been about operating
SSB - having been a nearly 100% CW op over the years, it was a bit of a leap to
get me sitting in a chair with a microphone, going for rate instead of avoiding
it.

And, FD can also be a major club social event, a picnic, a camp-out, a way of
experimenting with antennas, modes, etc.

In order to be all things, an FD group needs to be large...and OTVARC's most
certainly is. Last year we had 144 people sign into the guest log, placing us
4th place nationwide. No other club in the northwest exceeded 50.

That's why we were able to have two digital modes, two CW stations, two SSB
stations (shared with digital in one case), 50/144/432MHz, a fully-staffed 4A
operation and catered food. Everybody got out of FD what they wanted...unless
what they really wanted was a one-man campout with a bit of radio attached.
That's fun too, I've done it, and I'll do it again. But for now, I'm enjoying
going out with a team that's hugely about enhancing the operators' abilities.

This year, I'm told, we'll be adding a satellite station, just to add more to
the mix.

So, there's probably the biggest FD in the area with the most variety. For
some, it's too much...but it's a good heavy dose of lots of ham radio in one
weekend, if that's what you want.

One of the ham radio clubs does a primarily QRP Field Day, other clubs choose a
site with a great view...you should probably contact each group to ask what
makes their FD special and what they emphasize - points, party, food, or
campout.

No matter which group you choose, if they publicize it on the web, they'll
definitely welcome you.

Dave W8NF

Is the PARC field day still at Kelly Butte? I may not be going to the right web
site, and want to find out if that is indeed, the place. I look forward to
visiting field days about the metro area to take photos and catch up on the
hobby after a 45 year absence from being on the air.

Portland Amateur Radio Club ARRL Field Day starts Friday, June 25th 2010
with antenna and site work at Kelly Butte Park, in SE Portland. Our regular
monthly meeting will be held at the Field Day site that night again this year,
but will be informal and brief to allow an early start Saturday the 26th. Target
time Friday for line launching is 1400 hrs (2 PM PDST). Brief "meeting" will be
at 6:00 PM. If there is unfinished line work we will just continue.
We will try to monitor the 146.84 repeater, call W7LT.

We will NOT meet at One Liberty Centre, our regular location.

The American Radio Relay League (ARRL) "Field Day" is a national 24 hour
field communications exercise to demonstrate the ability of amateur radio
operators to communicate in case of emergencies under adverse conditions.
During the 2007 winter storm here in Oregon, Amateur Radio came to the
rescue for the communities isolated from the rest of the world, such as
Vernonia, Astoria, Seaside and Cannon Beach. Amateur operators provided
around the clock assistance as needed. PARC's VHF repeater was used
extensively linked to the coastal communities via remote base.

Operating begins Saturday, June 26th at 1100 hours (11AM PDST), and ends
24 hours later. Our callsign will be W7LT as usual. CW, Phone and Digital
stations will be needed.
If you are interested in helping with setup, teardown, equipment, food,
and/or operating, please let us know, as we always need many hands to
make it a success every year. Last year we were first in our class (4A
Battery) running 5 watts output maximum. Operators with equipment are
also needed again this year, both for CW and phone, HF, VHF UHF.
We are planning to be back at Kelly Butte Park again this year. South on
103rd from SE Division Street (about 5 blocks east of I205). Our potluck
dinner on Saturday evening will begin about 1700 hours, (5:00 PM PDST).
To get on the list or for inquiries please contact Pete W7PR at
W7PR@..., or call 503-771-1773 and leave a message. Hope to see
many of you there this year! Visitors and guests are always welcome!!

Based on a quick study on the web, I'd say "Yes", they are having FD at Kelly
Butte.

Primary evidence: They submitted a log to the ARRL last year, indicating they
made 292 QSOs in class 4A, running 5watts. 4A and 5 watts coincides with the
latest comments about FD on their website, which were posted about five years
ago, so probably it's the same core group of guys doing what they enjoy year
after year. And that can make for a very cozy and pleasant FD.

One way to attempt to confirm would be to try to raise one of the members on the
146.84 repeater.

Or, this page on their website gives phone numbers for club contacts you might
ask:

Breakfast This Saturday -- EAST SIDE!!

Announcing:

CASCADE QRP CLUB BREAKFAST -- July 10: EAST SIDE

Starts around 9:00 a.m. (but some show up a little earlier!)

We call this a club, but there are NO DUES, NO ROSTER, NO RULES, NO CLUB
OFFICERS! This is simply a group of people who love amateur radio and love to
talk about it! Most of us enjoy QRP (low power), but because there are no rules,
it doesn't matter what you enjoy about ham radio! In fact, you don't even need
to be a ham radio operator to join us at breakfast! (We can help you get
started!) Just show up and have a great breakfast with some great company!

FUTURE BREAKFAST MEETINGS AND LOCATIONS

Both east and west side locations are Home Town Buffet (formerly Old Country
Buffet). Plug either of these into Mapquest for good directions:

EAST SIDE: 10542-A SE Washington Street, Portland 97216-2809 (105th and SE
Washington)

WEST SIDE: 13500 SW Pacific Highway, Tigard 97213-4804 (Not too far from Ham
Radio Outlet!)

Phil,
You're supposed to let people know that all the members are several degrees off
of plumb! <grin>.

Sharon and I are packing the wagons the end of the month and headed back to
Oregon Territory, Hermiston, that is.
We'll get to meetings in Portland when we can.

Hello – Sorry, I didn’t make it after all.  I did show some QRP stuff to a few Desert Storm vets.  They had done communications in the military and are interested in the ham world.  I was asked by my son at the last minute to give a quick show of my gear, the Oak Hills, and the Rock Mite.  Didn’t get them up and running, but showed off the kits that I have set up.

Hope to meet you all next time.  73s, Mr Bob KM7Q

I saw that I didn't change something inside my email which could confuse things.

We'll be at the Tigard Hometown Buffet on the WEST SIDE.

Hope that clears up any possible confusion!

See you there!
