Hi Tracy, I can certainly see not wanting to buy baby clothes in China if you have tons at home, but you might consider the option of buying some there anyway.
If you don't have the baby with you then yes, you have to check baby's bag. On the way back, many airlines seem to count a diaper bag as the baby's carry on.
