Description

CARRICKMINES CASTLE was built by Normans in the twelfth century, on the frontier between Dublin and Wicklow, Ireland.

In 1997 authorities approved a new route for a motorway through the site, and it was excavated for two years, ending Jan 2003. It contains massive defences, hewn into bedrock, and human remains, victims of a reign of terror. Carrickminders occupation (for 155 days) and subsequent legal actions turned Carrickmines Castle into the battleground for the 'development v heritage' forces. Dúchas, The Heritage Service of Ireland has been broken up, and Minister Cullen was found to have acted unconstitutionally when he consented to the demoliton of Carrickmines. So, on 16 June he introduced legislation, to clear a path for motorways at Tara, Waterford and Carrickmines.
