Oy vey :(. I've been gaining weight despite being carfree for 10
years and cycling, walking, and taking transit. Now, I am faced with
having to buy a car in order to get to the train station because a
major bridge is being demolished and replaced, and the detour route is
too dangerous to cycle on; two narrow lanes in an industrial zone
bordered by a toll-road embankment and oil storage tanks, no street
lights, no observable speed limit, no enforcement. Here's a Google
street view of the worst part http://goo.gl/maps/K7cQc.

I may have mentioned this before, but I knew a professor in Portland who
received a research fellowship and moved to Japan for two years with his family.
When the time came to return to the U.S., the children, ages 9 and 11, didn't
want to leave Japan, because they had more freedom in Japan than in the States.
They could get around town walking, cycling, or taking transit and didn't have
to wait for rides, as they did in the suburbs of even such a transit-friendly
city as Portland.

Spending most of my elementary school years in a town of 30,000 that was laid
out in a block grid, I had much more freedom than my nieces and nephews did
growing up in typical suburbs of Minneapolis and St. Paul. During the years we
lived on an arterial street, we were not allowed to cross it unaccompanied, but
there were plenty of little used streets, including all the ones that led to our
school. Nobody ever worried about our being abducted, even though there were
abductions in those days, just not nationally publicized ones.

When I spent two weeks in Beijing in 1990, it was a nearly car-free city. Sure,
certain high officials rode around in chauffeured cars, but ordinary people rode
bicycles in a city that is flat and on the edge of a desert, so no hills or
frequent rainstorms to contend with. Much of the freight was carried in pedicabs
or horse-drawn vehicles. Instead of gas stations, there were makeshift roadside
businesses that repaired bicycles and patched up flat tires. There was a
rudimentary subway system and plenty of buses.

There was air some air pollution, most notably from coal-powered furnaces. We
learned why the teacups in our rooms were covered, because any boiled water that
we drew from the thermos bottles in each room in order to cool it ended up with
black specks in it otherwise.

But visibility was fine, and you could see the blue sky.

It was disheartening to learn a few years later that the Chinese government was
encouraging car ownership, building freeways, and banning bicycles from many
streets. If they had been smart, as opposed to eager to catch up with the West,
they would have used that money to create the world's best subway system and
switch over to non-petroleum buses.

Well, they got what they wanted.

Not to dispute the gravity of China's air pollution, but cities all over the
country are scrambling to build massive subway systems (perhaps too eagerly, as
noted by some financial analysts; see
http://www.reuters.com/article/2012/12/17/us-china-economy-infrastructure-idUSBR\
E8BG14L20121217), and at least in Chengdu (and thus I'd reckon in other Chinese
cities as well) all city buses and taxis run on compressed natural gas.

Nonetheless, as we all know, car ownership rates here are skyrocketing, making
it harder for everybody to get around via other means of transport. It's a
vicious cycle.

> New Study Shows Potential of Transit-Oriented Development in Pittsburgh Region
> (Feb. 8, 2013) The Center for Transit-Oriented Development (CTOD) today
released results of a year-long study into the potential for transit-oriented
development to unlock economic, environmental and fiscal benefits for Pittsburgh
and Allegheny County.
>
> "In an environment where we're asked to do more with less, and make the most
of our existing transit assets, the Pittsburgh region is poised to be a model,"
said Abigail Thorne-Lyman, Director of CTOD. "This strategy has been developed
with deep involvement from the nonprofit, public, and business sectors, meaning
everyone is ready to act."
>
> The CTOD report, "Transit-Oriented Development Typology Strategy for Allegheny
County," was commissioned by the Pittsburgh Community Reinvestment Group under
the auspices of its GoBurgh initiative and funded by the Heinz Endowments.
>
> The study revealed some interesting findings about what is needed to support
TOD in Pittsburgh, including new sources of funding for smaller scale
infrastructure improvements such as pedestrian pathways and signage to help link
the stations to nearby communities. It also identifies priority areas for TOD
investments out of 100 stations in the rail, busway, and incline transit
network, based on the readiness of those stations to be transformed into
walkable, transit supportive communities. The study prioritizes stations based
on three types of investments: infrastructure, new development, and building the
capacity of community groups, which is a specialty of the Pittsburgh Community
Reinvestment Group and its GoBurgh initiative.
>
> "The great news is, in the world of transportation, these are relatively
low-cost investments that can catalyze significant gains for these communities,"
said Chris Sandvig, Regional Policy Director for the Pittsburgh Community
Reinvestment Group and leader of its GoBurgh initiative. "We need to capitalize
on that existing infrastructure in a comprehensive and systematic way so we can
realize the economic, access, environmental and fiscal benefits of
transit-oriented development."

> The Center for Transit-Oriented Development (CTOD) is the only national
nonprofit effort dedicated to providing best practices, research and tools to
support equitable market-based transit-oriented development. CTOD partners with
both the public and private market sectors to strategize about ways to encourage
the development of high performing communities around transit stations and to
build transit systems that maximize development potential. CTOD works to
integrate local and regional planning, generate new tools for economic
development, real estate and investment issues, improve affordability and
livability for all members of the community, and respond to imperatives for
climate change and sustainability. The Center for TOD is a partnership of
Reconnecting America, the Center for Neighborhood Technology, and Strategic
