I don't have time to compare the findings to the proposed model Carfree City,
but it would be an interesting comparison. The study's results could be useful
in designing subway systems in a carfree city.

Subject: Fwd: Support Ecocity Builders' Proposal to Rio+20 UNCSD
carfreecrawford
Send Email Send Email

Hi All,

I think this effort, from Ecocity Builders, for the Rio+20 meeting is probably
worth engaging with; the deadline is 3 June 2012, so hurry! Here is the posting
I made to my profile:

------------------------------

Adopt the carfree city as the cornerstone for sustainable urbanism

J.H. Crawford
to
Sustainable cities and innovation

The carfree city is the most sustainable, least expensive form of urbanism. It
dramatically reduced transport-related energy consumption and emissions. No
proposal to retain automobile use in cities can achieve the same level of
benefits. This relates not only to energy itself but also to the materials
required to build and maintain large fleets of cars. Energy-efficient public
transport, bicycles, and walking can meet transport needs with a tiny fraction
of the impacts of automobiles.

The carfree city makes far more efficient use of land. No land need be provided
for car parking, and streets can be a small fraction of the width required to
permit widespread car use. Less land is hardened, so stormwater runoff is a
smaller problem.

At the same time, the carfree city provides an improvement in the quality of
urban life second to none. The danger from cars is eliminated, noise is greatly
reduced, and high-quality social spaces arise spontaneously once cars are
removed.

The concepts are described in detail at http://www.carfree.com . The books
_Carfree Cities_ and _Carfree Design Manual_ provide detailed information about
how to build new carfree cities and convert existing cities to the carfree
model. The approach is based on a mathematical analysis. It relies heavily on
traditional patterns of urban development.

The June issue of Sustainable City News is online now! This month we feature:

The East Bay Development Ballet
http://sustainablecitynews.com/eastbayballet.html
Preparations are being made in Oakland and Berkeley to capture the next wave of
development. Across from San Francisco, the cities on the "sunny side of the
bay" are in the midst of a series of planning efforts to promote sustainable
development and improve transit options. Some efforts are complete, some are in
process, while others are just getting started. Taken cumulatively, they could
significantly change the fabric of these cities' urban cores. But the
results--so far--have been decidedly mixed.

In Downtown They Say, "What Housing Crash?"
http://sustainablecitynews.com/walkablehoods.html
There's been no shortage of news over the past five years about the real estate
crash. Real estate values, long on the upslope, have been coming down. And that,
analysts say, is changing a nation of homeowners to renters. This is a
simplification, however, and in many neighborhoods, real estate values continue
to rise.

High-Speed Dithering
http://sustainablecitynews.com/rr71.html
Even a cursory glance at the news of the last two years reveals an inordinate
degree of blithering and dithering over high-speed rail in the US—and especially
in California. Some states have even, in a fit of anti-Federalist pique,
returned high-speed rail grants—while other states have snapped them up
forthwith. But even within states that are committed to HSR, controversy still
rages. Controversy over financing, over feasibility, even over philosophy...

Walking the Walk, Stepping on Toes
http://sustainablecitynews.com/walkthewalk.html
Slate Magazine has recently published a four-part feature on "The Crisis in
American Walking." Why do people walk so little? Why is walking given so little
importance by urban planners and politicians?

Plus hundreds of archived articles, our blog, reviews, weather, an dmore!

There's a fresh blog post on developments in Denver, Colorado, on Sustainable
City News now, at:

http://www.newcolonist.com/vox/archive/00001378.html

While much of Denver out-LAs Los Angeles, there are some really interesting
things happening that make me think it's way ahead of La-La Land in preparing
for post-oil future--and a convivial urban present.

We had but a short time there, but did look around a good bit and get some
photos, so take a look!

Cheers,

WASHINGTON — The continental United States experienced the warmest
spring on record this year, with temperatures far above the average
over the past century, government scientists said Thursday.

The United States, excluding Alaska, Hawaii and overseas territories,
had an average temperature of 57.1 degrees Fahrenheit (13.9 Celsius)
from March through May, 5.2 degrees (2.9 Celsius) above the average
from 1901 to 2000, the data showed.

"Spring 2012 marked the largest temperature departure from average of
any season on record for the contiguous United States," the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration said in a statement.

This year's spring was up 2.0 degrees (1.1 Celsius) from the previous
warmest spring in the United States which was recorded in 1910, the
agency said.

Yet another article on the drop in driving by Americans (and Brits), with the
added observation that policymakers are "oblivious" to these fundamental changes
and continue to plan for endless increases in VMT:

UK researchers calculated the effect of obesity on the earth, concluding that if
all the world's present population were as fat as Americans, it would add up to
the equivalent drain on resources of an extra billion people.

Digging further, they correlated obesity with the prevalence of driving. To wit:

> "One of the most important determinants of average body mass index is motor
verhicle gas consumptrion per capita. So, it is no surprise to see many of the
Arab countries in the list - people eat but they move very little because they
drive everywhere."

Hope no one minds too much, but I am throwing you a plug for one of our cycling
products, sales of which are what keep Bicycle Fixation writing articles and
essays and participating in on-the-groudn transportation advocacy in Los Angeles
and elsewhere. We try to make things that make it easier for people to integrate
cycling with their daily lives, so none of our products looks like race kit, and
all of it is usable in all seasons on or off the bike.

Our latest is…

...Our All-Merino V-Neck T-Shirt!

True, we had to use me as a model, which will probably reduce initial sales, but
I promise you that better-looking models should appear within a week or two. We
just wanted to make this available as soon as we could, and that meant using
your ancient editor in front of the camera.

I've been wearing prototypes for months now, through summer heat and winter
chill, through rain and wind and over hills, and it is just plain wonderful:
comfortable in all weathers, and better-looking than a t-shirt has a right to
be. Pays well with others too: you can use it as part of a layering scheme, with
a light button shirt over it in fall or spring, or sweaters, jackets, or wool
jerseys in the winter.

Just click here to check it out and order one for yourself today.

Made in Los Angeles in a fair-wage factory.

Minneapolis and the Road to Bikesharing
http://sustainablecitynews.com/TCniceride.html
We headed to the Walker Art Center. It seemed like walking was too far, and
figuring out the bus in time would take longer than the Walker would be open. So
we hailed a cab. Just then we noticed the bike sharing program. It was the last
cab ride of the weekend. No longer pressed for time, we did walk back to the
downtown hotel from the Walker, taking the free downtown bus a few of the
blocks. From then on our tour was by bicycle.

Ten Ways to Declare Independence from Oil
http://sustainablecitynews.com/topten4.html
This is the month when the US celebrates its independence from its former
colonial masters in old England in 1776. While we are no longer in thrall to Mad
King George, our addiction to cars and sprawl keeps us straitjacketed in a
tangle of pollution, congestion, loneliness, and an endless round of payouts to
the Big Three, Big Oil, and the Road Lobby. Here are ten ways you can break the
habit and begin to declare Independence from Oil and the relentless taxes it
imposes on our bodies, souls, and pocketbooks.

What Would George Say?
http://sustainablecitynews.com/plasticfootprint.html
Imagine if George Washington had thrown a plastic cup overboard while crossing
the Delaware River in 1776? That cup would eventually have floated out into the
Atlantic Ocean, and would still be out there today—over 230 years later.

Front Range Foray: Denver and Its Suburbs
http://sustainablecitynews.com/denver_suburbs.html
As wildfires, reinforced by global-warming-nurtured heat waves, march seemingly
at will through Colorado this week, and parts of Colorado Springs are under
evacuation orders as houses burst into flame on the nightly news, it is perhaps
a good time to study the contrasts in development offered by the nearby Denver
region
